Now, as far as cancers go a cancer of the stomach doesn't sound like it would be one of the worst, but it actually is. As far as sheer pain is concerned, a wound or cancer in or around the stomach is the most agonizing as it's not something that will produce a quick death. It's not as immediately incapacitating as the heart or lungs or liver...but God, does it hurt. With other, more immediately fatal forms of cancer, one might say the victim dies mercifully quickly (comparably). But with stomach cancer...it takes more time to pass away. This movie was produced in 1994. Before it, in early 1994, Julia was diagnosed with the cancer. Before 1994 would end, he would be dead. Between that, he worked this movie. Simply amazing, considering the pain he must have been in. And more touching still - he did this movie not for money, but for his children. And when he completed his role here, he died. Really good point about Raul at the end. Sometimes people forget that this was a passion project despite how it turned out. I blame the studios for rushing it more than anything.
There are a lot of actors who take these roles because of their kids (for example, Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever), and then they phone in the performance. Not Raul, he gave his all in this performance...and he was fucking dying! That is a legend, man.
Maybe Raul did all his stunts for one reason: He wanted to his kids to see he did all the action moves. He gave 100% to this role! A great actor and a great father! RIP!
I remember 1995 as a 12 year old kid being so devastated upon hearing news of Raul Julia’s passing, amazing personality and such charisma. M Bison as his last role ? Actually righteous.
The real beauty of Street Fighter is the fact that it embraces its campness and rather than shying away from it just turns it up to 11 the whole way through the movie! The writers embraced the sheer absurdity of the game when drafting the script and the actors went all in on hamming up their performances. However I fully agree that Raul Julia is the true jewel in the crown of this camp masterpiece. His performance was outstanding! (Even topping Frank Langela's stellar interpretation of Skeletor in Masters of The Universe!) As a 13 year old when I saw this for the first time in 1994 I was blown away by how good he was and now (considerably older!) I can appreciate his performance even more so. AND....to top it all off learning that he did this movie as a final gift to his children.....the man was a legend!
I remember watching that Masters of the Universe movie. Now that I'm older, I still occasionally watch it because of Langela's Skeletor. For some reason, the actors playing the bad guys can turn it up to 11 and turn pure crap into pure gold.
I very distinctly remember seeing this in the theater and freaking out with my friend when Julia said "anyone who opposes me will be destroyed" like in the game. DAMN I MISS THE 90'S.
Raul was such a great actor! He is sorely missed. I think it's also why he put so much of himself in this movie. He knew it was possibly his last movie and wanted to pour all that he had left into this movie. You can tell in his acting and just how seriously he took the role but at the same time had fun doing it.
Just goes to show how awesome and professional Raul Julia was. He only took the role because it would makes his children happy and even though it was totally not the type of movie he would normally do he still poured out his heart and soul into the performance and for me that made that movie great.
Really, he was by far the best actor on the set (heck, most likely the only actor, lol), and while the rest of the cast didnt gave a shit about the movie because they knew it was "just some video game movie for kids", this man gave one of the best performances of his career.
I had never explored Raul Julia's motivations for taking up the role of M. Bison. Now that I know, I have a much deeper appreciation for him that goes beyond his work. Time for a SF and Adams Family rewatch!
Raul Julia was BORN to play theatrical roles such as these. He's the only reason I checked this movie out. He was a theater juggernaut that left us far too soon.
It’s as if Raul Julia wasn’t acting. He enveloped who Bison is. I truly believe he should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. My humble opinion.
Given how bad the rest of the movie was its not a surprise that it was overlooked. But its only because of Julia's performance that this film is fondly remembered. The man was a masterful actor & a great human being.
thats what it said at the end for you? I remember when I saw it in the theater, it simply said : Dedicated to the memory of Raul Julia _"Vaya con Dios, Raul"_
This movie is legendary in my eyes. I grew up watching him in Street Fighter and the Addams Family. Raul Julia was a great actor in his lifetime and there will never be another actor like him. Rest In Peace Raul 🇵🇷
Addams Family was my jam. Raul Julia as Gomez was honestly kind of life-changing for me. He played the part perfectly, a madman a father and the head of a family of weirdos, he would love and accept anybody who was willing to do the same with his bunch of misfits.. and when he'd flash that "oh yes I'm quite insane" smile... film perfection RIP
Raul Julia is playing Bison with his heart. That's why even though how bad this movie rated by critics, people will always love it. Also personally, this is my childhood
There is just something *amazing* about great actors KNOWING they're in a 'bad' movie, but hamming it the hell up for love of the craft. "If I'm gonna be part of this trainwreck, I will be the *BEST DAMN THING IN IT*!"
@@willarddennis9415 To you it wasn't. Honestly Venom itself was the only redeeming character in the movie (hence the name of the film itself), everyone else was either mediocre at best or forgettable. I'll even admit I'd take Street Fighter: The Movie over Venom (that's right I said it!)
I often wonder what characters Raul would have been great for if he were still around today. I always thought he would have been a good choice for Count Dooku in Star Wars.
he's in that list of actors who... can't suck. you could put this man in the worst film ever made and yet he will put on a performance that is just incredible. very few actors could do that.
Interestingly, there are 2 books called "The metaphysics of war" and the "Secret of the Grail", which are about what it means to have a "warrior spirit" and what unites traditions like Kung Fu, Knighthood, Martial Arts, Samurais and so on. Interestingly, what Raul Julia did to make this movie, despite his cancer and pain. That he basically risked absolutely everything to complete the project. According to nearly all cultures of the world, this is the essence of the true warrior spirit. And this is why some militaries have slogans like "per aspera ad astra", which mean "reach the stars by willingness to endure hardship and suffering."
My father and I watched this movie in the theater. We both enjoyed it. 24 Years later, my son and I watched this on a laptop. We both enjoyed it. It wasn't so bad afterall!
I know right! Clearly he used some sort of crazy advanced technology to make it so at 14:00-14:45 something either gets in our eyes or the video emits a super strong yet undetectable smell of freshly chopped onions...
He also said he was able to hang out for hours and hours with his kids playing the game and claim it as "research." He's so fun in the movie and his reasons for being in it are so heartwarming.
Bayu Aditya H It's bad bad. When Street Fighter came out, film critic Leonard Maltin called it the worst video game movie ever. But when once he saw The Legend of Chun Li, he stated Chun Li made Street Fighter look like Gone With The Wind in comparison.
Yeah the Legend of Chun Li is stupidly bad. However, mostly because it just flat out destroys any existing lore and made a very terrible movie out of it. The original Streetfighter movie isn't any better though.
I remember watching this as a kid. I didn't know it was even considered as a "bad" movie. All I cared about was that there was JCVD and it was about Street Fighter. For what it's worth, the best scene for me was when Zangief said, "Quick! Change the channel!" Gets me even till today. Great video by the way, especially when you mentioned that it was for his kids.
Thank you for this video. It caught me off guard that you would give Raul this much credit and respect. As a Puerto Rican I was saddened to hear of his death and your words awoke those feelings all over again. Thank you.
In high school drama class, I did the Col. Guile speech for a performance. I dressed up just like him and even tried to do his accent! It was funny! I got an A+ though!
"I'm gonna geht in my baowd, goa up that riever, and I'm gonna kick that zun-uv-a-bitch Bison's ass szo hard... that the next Bison wannabe... is gonna feel it. Now, hoo vants to goa hoame? And hoo vants to goa with me?!" Oh man, I love that scene. You prolly deserved that A+ :)
Lol, as a 7 year old, I did not see this as a bad movie or care about “camp” at all. I took this movie seriously, and that speech always got me pumped up
I think I've seen this film at least 30 times when I was younger. You managed to perfectly point out what makes it so damn enjoyable. Time for a rewatch!
Yeah, as kids, me and my sister saw this movie twice in theaters. Then a little before it released on video it was available to order and watch at a Holiday Inn my sister's friend's dad managed, so when her and her friend stayed in a room one night as a sort of "spend the night" party while her friend's dad worked a graveyard shift they ordered it and recorded it on a VHS. So basically we had the movie even before it was out on video and I gotta say we watched that sucker at least 30 times. Looking back on it now I realize how many times my mom had to put up with that movie playing on the TV from us rewatching it so much; although, I am pretty sure she was a big Raul Julia fan so that probably helped a bit.
It had a LOT of flaws when it released back then, and still does. the flaws don't change but it can be appreciated from a different perspective now, with new eyes.
Oggzoslav I’m scared that I might actually like this movie if I rewatch it & people will look at me tasteless when I recommend them to watch Street Fighter
Fun fact: The soundtrack for the film is amazing especially if you're a fan of 90s hip hop. It features Ice Cube, MC Hammer, The Pharcyde, Nas, LL Cool J, Paris and Ahmad (Back in the Day) It even has a scrapped track from Nas's Illmatic which is considered by some to be the best hip hop album of all time.
Funny enough, my favorite vocal track in the film is the Chage & Aska song, Something There. It's not a hiphop at all, but like a relic of the 80's made in the 90's.
I actually teared up when you explained raul julias reason for taking the role. Funnily enough him going through production and death would make great oscar bait.
Its camp. This movie is fucking amazing just like The Room, or the Batman Adam West TV show. And making camp isnt easy. For example, Batman & Robin was plain bad, because it didnt took itself seriously, for a movie to be campy, it needs to take itself seriously while being absolutely absurd. And Raul Julia...Jesus Christ, the guy was dying, he was playing a video game villain, but he didnt care, he was the first on set, and always remembered his lines (unlike most of the cast), he gave his all for the role...like the director said, "Raul was the only one with an excuse for not caring about the movie, but he was actually the one who showed the most care for it".
Julia said that he was attempting to channel Shakespeare's Richard III with his M. Bison portrayal and it definitely. No doubt he could have knocked Richard III out of the park if he ever had the opportunity.
Finally someone out there loves Raul Julia as much as I do. He was a truly amazing actor. A powerful screen presence. He could be completely over the top and also quietly stoic. Like all the greats, when he was in a scene, he was the actor that drew your eyes to his performance. Everyone else was on the screen just to support his performance.
Wow. I was 13 when the live action Street Fighter came out and I was already familiar with Julia's motivations for making the movie; I actually saw the very interview you use towards the video's end when it aired on television. But you framed his story so well that the profundity of it really hit me in a way that it never had before. I've long appreciated Julia's performance, but watching this video, I can't help but have another level of respect and admiration for it. You've legitimately changed the way I feel about this movie; every time I watch it, I don't think I'll be able to help thinking of Julia and his devotion to his children and the way in which this movie is a testament to fatherly love. As someone who misses his father every day, that really strikes a cord. I'm sure a lot of other people who saw this video feel the same way. Awesome, awesome video.
To this day, I study the speech M. Bison made when he heard of Guile’s fake death, and then think of Zangief saying, “That was beautiful.” I crack up afterwards; always.
Julia knew this was going to be his last role. He wanted to go out with a bang. He'd be proud today knowing he saved a really bad movie and turned it into a classic.
I thought of this movie the other day, the whole "for me, it was Tuesday." line made me want to watch it again so I jumped on eBay and bought a copy yesterday morning. Then I see this great video. Raul Julia definitely made this movie awesome. I just realized something....., It's Tuesday!
Damn. I never knew Raul did it for his kids. If I was his kid, I would cry every time watching that movie knowing my dad did this movie for me. RIP Raul. You may have played a villain, but were a true hero in this life and the next.
Street Fighter has everything I want in a movie, period. Over the top villain, tough as nails handsome good guy, ragtag militia teams, one liners, lotsa 'splosions. Great video dude! Well done!
Julia's motivation to play Bison in this movie, all the while knowing that his fate in life was sealed with cancer, just shows the wholesome and dedicated man he was. Everyone deserves to watch this movie, just for him.
New found respect for Raul Julia! I had no clue of his reasons to take on the role. As a child, I did very much enjoy the movie part of also being a JVC and action / fighting movie in general aficionado + as an SF2 World Champion arcade fan. What an inspiration, may God take care of his soul!
Kylie Minogue - MUSIC ICON (if you're American and you don't know a great deal about her, do some research. She's amazing.) This is not her finest moment though. She HATES it herself and is extremely embarrassed. I quite enjoyed it when I was 12. EDIT: Oh god, that Raul Julia ending. How did a Street Fighter video genuinely break my heart? I did not see that coming.
just julia was awesome in the addams familly, he was LEGENDARY in this one, he OWN that movie. so sad he passed, but wherever he is i hope he know just how much people remember him, forever a legend, OF COURSE !!!!
The praise for Jean Claude Van Damme is a bit weird when you consider that his (at the time) unprofessional behavior has been blamed as one of the production problems. It has been claimed that due to his partying (and alleged affair) he repeatedly wasn't in condition to film. He wouldn't bother to learn or practice his lines. And when he botched a scene, he allegedly blamed others, earning no additional love from his co-workers. Van Damme has been cited as the polar opposite to Julia.
yet he's one of the reasons this movie succeeded & one of the reasons this movie is more popular back then van damme was also famous for martial arts movies which no one cared about his personal life or his attitude at the time. he was just an object for this movie because they didn't have to train someone in martial arts.
"PARENTAL LOVE" It's the thing that saved this movie. Without it, Julia would end up notbeing overtly motivated to star as M. Bison... The true star of the franchise.

@@MonkeyKingsformerroomate Yes, you did kinda, even though I still get the essence. He speaks about his arriving in her village as being the most important day of her life. An epic line, way too cold...
he was way ahead of lil flip
It was Tuesday
@@MonkeyKingsformerroomate "The day BISON graced your village, was the most important day of your life! But for me........ It was tuesday!!!"
M. Bison was giving it all just to make his kids happy..
If I was his son, I'd be proud of his performance.
"giving it all just to make his kids happy.." Tear jerking moment. I'm so sorry he is gone.
Damn i got chills ..
He was the shining star in this otherwise terrible film.
OF COURSE!
"For you, the day the Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life.... for me, it was Tuesday...."

I fully believed Zangief was actually Zangief in this film
JJohnWords ME TOO!!!! Young AF
me too hahaha
Then that actor nailed it! :D

Critics hated it, but as 9 year old kid I loved it. Thank you Raul!
this kind of movie isn't FOR critics, it's for the 9 year old in all of us :)
here-here

I was 10 when it came out and just happy because the characters from Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition on Genesis were fighting in real life!

Really good point about Raul at the end. Sometimes people forget that this was a passion project despite how it turned out. I blame the studios for rushing it more than anything.
Even I didnt knew Raul took the role because of his kids. Father of the Year.....no, Father of the Century material!
RIP!
Maybe he just realised how epic it was to do the Psycho Crusher
buddyluv324 Did all that for his children despite the fact he was dying from cancer. He's was a damn good father in my book. Raul Julia R.I.P.
Raul Julia stole the show.
He's the reason I watched the movie over 10 times
Like skeletor in masters of the universe film
Yeah I gotta give credit where credit is due
Nah bro he earned it.
"Jus' tek de hostages out. If I'm nut tupside in feefeen meenutes, ehvakooate wizout me.
Oh, hi Mark."
I was not prepared for that. ecks dee.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh hi Mark
lololololol
Ken: I'm sorry I talked you into this.
Ryu: I'm sorry I listened.
Raul was such a great actor! He is sorely missed. I think it's also why he put so much of himself in this movie. He knew it was possibly his last movie and wanted to pour all that he had left into this movie. You can tell in his acting and just how seriously he took the role but at the same time had fun doing it.
He did what he did. Even dying in his last moments of life. He made it enjoyable.
Zangief: "Quick! Change the channel!"
Everyone else slowly turns to him with a look of WTF?
This is one of my favorite movie scenes ever.
“Wait, you got… paid?”
After hearing this story. Raul Julia is my hero now.
@Narek , indeed. He didn't even have to say "I love you" to his kids, all could just see what he did and know it is true.
I had never explored Raul Julia's motivations for taking up the role of M. Bison. Now that I know, I have a much deeper appreciation for him that goes beyond his work. Time for a SF and Adams Family rewatch!
Akibana Zero apparently he did it because his children asked if he would pursue the role
Addams Family Values is one of the most underappreciated movies in history. It was a laugh a minute and subtly so dark.
Ultimately, Bangkoks untreated food and water killed him. Let this be a lesson, never trust their water system and food.
WTF you know he's dead right???
@@brett19890 no, Raul Julia was diagnosed with stomach cancer before this movie.
Raul Julia was BORN to play theatrical roles such as these. He's the only reason I checked this movie out. He was a theater juggernaut that left us far too soon.
For me, it was a tuesday.
RareBirdInteractive you beat me to that best line.
OF COURSE!
Best line EVER!
I guess you didn't see that. Did you?
I wish Bison could "grace" my village, one day...
(preferably on a Tuesday)
This made me tearful. Never forget Juliá
rob0079 Agreed... I wasn't expecting to cry from a video like this...
The phantom pain soundtrack fits too.
Definitely better than Ryan Gosling in Ken who also hams it up also
Great video! Here in Puerto Rico Raúl Juliá is a legend. The ending of this video just made me cry. ¡QUE EN PAZ DESCANSE RAÚL JULIÁ!
Literally made me cry too
People like him make me proud to be from my island
thats what it said at the end for you? I remember when I saw it in the theater, it simply said :
Dedicated to the memory of Raul Julia
_"Vaya con Dios, Raul"_
Viva Raul Julia 🙏🏻
This movie is legendary in my eyes. I grew up watching him in Street Fighter and the Addams Family. Raul Julia was a great actor in his lifetime and there will never be another actor like him. Rest In Peace Raul 🇵🇷
I still love both Addams family movies. Raul Julia is one of the greats and wss taken way too soon
@@QuantumRizzX Definitely taken away too soon.
Addams Family was my jam. Raul Julia as Gomez was honestly kind of life-changing for me. He played the part perfectly, a madman a father and the head of a family of weirdos, he would love and accept anybody who was willing to do the same with his bunch of misfits.. and when he'd flash that "oh yes I'm quite insane" smile... film perfection
RIP
Raul Julia is playing Bison with his heart.
That's why even though how bad this movie rated by critics, people will always love it.
Also personally, this is my childhood
There is just something *amazing* about great actors KNOWING they're in a 'bad' movie, but hamming it the hell up for love of the craft.
"If I'm gonna be part of this trainwreck, I will be the *BEST DAMN THING IN IT*!"
@@DragonKnightJin I imagine that Tom Hardy had the same mindset in Venom
@@thepassingstatic6268 venom wasn't a bad movie tho....
@@willarddennis9415 I wanna watch that version then
@@willarddennis9415 To you it wasn't. Honestly Venom itself was the only redeeming character in the movie (hence the name of the film itself), everyone else was either mediocre at best or forgettable. I'll even admit I'd take Street Fighter: The Movie over Venom (that's right I said it!)
RIP Raul Julia. He never got to see what a magnificent performance he gave.
I often wonder what characters Raul would have been great for if he were still around today. I always thought he would have been a good choice for Count Dooku in Star Wars.
I can't help but watch him in this movie and wonder how amazing he would've been as Doctor Doom in a well written Fantastic Four movie.
I'd love to see him as Scarface bro
I think he would have been better as Sosa in Scarface
The guy pretty much was good at everything, fantastic choice for Dr Doom, for example.
he's in that list of actors who... can't suck. you could put this man in the worst film ever made and yet he will put on a performance that is just incredible. very few actors could do that.
Loved the bit where you added "Quiet's theme" in with the part about Raul doing this for his kids before he died. It fit perfectly. Wonderful job.
Say what you want about the film, but Raul Julia gave a performance of a lifetime. Pure genius.
I’m not crying. You’re crying!
I too am crying, what a hero
I teared up as well lol what a badass
**Of course!**
RIP Raul Julia. Despite the fact you were very ill, you played Bison like a Boss. One of the best performances I've ever seen.
My father and I watched this movie in the theater. We both enjoyed it. 24 Years later, my son and I watched this on a laptop. We both enjoyed it. It wasn't so bad afterall!
Despite already knowing that Raúl Juliá chose to take part in Street Fighter because of his children, I nearly teared up when you brought it up. 😢
"No it isn't a tear! There is something in my eye!"
I know right! Clearly he used some sort of crazy advanced technology to make it so at 14:00-14:45 something either gets in our eyes or the video emits a super strong yet undetectable smell of freshly chopped onions...
Same situation?
They're just sweating is all.
He also said he was able to hang out for hours and hours with his kids playing the game and claim it as "research." He's so fun in the movie and his reasons for being in it are so heartwarming.
cryed whit no shame
After watching "The Legend of Chun Li", I consider this movie a masterpiece.
Is it bad bad or bad worst?
Bayu Aditya H The Legend of Chun Li is definitely worst. Street Fighter (1994) is at least watchable and funny.
Legend of Chun Li was watchable thanks to Kristen Kreuk!
JCVD is the reason I hated it. And the fight scenes were cheesy at best. The only thing that kept the movie moving was Bison.
Thank you for this video. It caught me off guard that you would give Raul this much credit and respect. As a Puerto Rican I was saddened to hear of his death and your words awoke those feelings all over again. Thank you.
Viva Julia!! Viva PR
Es muy triste que ya no esté con nosotros! Un gran actor y, sobre todo, un gran hombre
Thank u so much for sharing this...
And R.I.P Raul Julia
I actually watched it cause of Kylie Minogue but will always agree Raul Julia was the true Star.
Same
This is also the greatest interpretation of Zangief ever. Next to M. Bison, he has the best and funniest lines in the movie.
Totally agreed man.
Raul Julia reminded me of Bela Lugosi in that he would give his all no matter how silly the material was. A true professional and a good man.
Great man Raul Julia. Love him as Gomez Addams
This reminds me of Alan Rickman and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
In high school drama class, I did the Col. Guile speech for a performance. I dressed up just like him and even tried to do his accent! It was funny! I got an A+ though!
I,hope that's true because that's fantastic
"I'm gonna geht in my baowd, goa up that riever, and I'm gonna kick that zun-uv-a-bitch Bison's ass szo hard... that the next Bison wannabe... is gonna feel it. Now, hoo vants to goa hoame? And hoo vants to goa with me?!"
Oh man, I love that scene. You prolly deserved that A+ :)
Lol, as a 7 year old, I did not see this as a bad movie or care about “camp” at all. I took this movie seriously, and that speech always got me pumped up
Never happened
It was the best performance of your life... but for your teacher. it was Tuesday

Craig Mack track fire. this whole soundtrack fire. you're so right
That's not the soundtrack. Let's speak properly. Those are the "songs" of the movie. The soundtrack was symphonic and composed by Graeme Revell.
Jesús Franco properly speaking you're talking about the original 'score' of the movie...
Illmatic, is considered by *many* to be the best hip hop album of all time...
Excellent analysis. I was a 90s Street fighter kid, and ahem, Mortal Kombat also.
Coleco 84 it ain't easy being cheesy
Julia said that he was attempting to channel Shakespeare's Richard III with his M. Bison portrayal and it definitely. No doubt he could have knocked Richard III out of the park if he ever had the opportunity.
Finally someone out there loves Raul Julia as much as I do. He was a truly amazing actor. A powerful screen presence. He could be completely over the top and also quietly stoic. Like all the greats, when he was in a scene, he was the actor that drew your eyes to his performance. Everyone else was on the screen just to support his performance.
“All I’m trying to do is create the perfect genetic soldier. Not for evil. But for good!”
Street Fighter is like "The Room" of action movies.
That heart tug towards the end of this video!
“That was beautiful!” - Zangief
Wow, I didnt know how sick Raul Julia was during the shooting. I have a new appreciation for this film. Thank you
Same here.
I knew why he filmed it, but I never realize his cancer was so advanced when he was shooting.
It was a great man.
Zangief: Quick, change the channel!
That's one of the best lines in the movie. XD
Raul Julia's performance was simply amazing.
wow great work on that video! Thanks for all the care you put in.
When I was a kid i always thought Ryu and Ken were the main characters. Through half the movie I forgot about Guile. haha
Well done!

This is the first YT video is ever cried too. I love your channel so much.
He banged Kylie around the set though like that must of been fun
yet he's one of the reasons this movie succeeded & one of the reasons this movie is more popular back then van damme was also famous for martial arts movies which no one cared about his personal life or his attitude at the time. he was just an object for this movie because they didn't have to train someone in martial arts.
As a fellow 80s and 90s kid, I highly approve of this!
Raul Julia would have continued to be an incredible force in cinema. One of the tragedies in my life time. His best films were yet to be made.
"PARENTAL LOVE"
It's the thing that saved this movie. Without it, Julia would end up notbeing overtly motivated to star as M. Bison... The true star of the franchise.
