Blue Hole: What's On The Bottom?

  • When we dive at the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, the most common question that non-divers ask is, "What's on the bottom?" We decided to answer the question when I tried out my new camera and underwater housing for the first time.

    Many years ago two brand new divers decided to go into the underground cave system that feeds the Blue Hole. They both died. As a consequence, a grate was put over the hole so that no one else could repeat that mistake. Someone else put the grave marker there as a reminder to any who might think about tampering with it.

      @@joseph7560 More recently a team of professional cave divers attempted to enter and map the cave system. One of the two divers died. The surviving diver had to re-enter the cave the next day to retrieve his friend’s body. He said that the caves are the most dangerous he has ever seen, and that no one should ever enter them again.

      @@MikeyD64 That is the old grate. It was removed more recently when a team of highly trained cave divers attempted to map the cave system. One of the technical divers died, and the surviving team leader said that this was the most dangerous cave system he had ever seen. After he retrieved his buddy's body, they placed a new grate over the hole so that no one can enter the cave system again.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing the Blue Hole with us!
      The bottom is always changing, both due to rock slides and also because people take and leave the artifacts you see in there. The rock slides seem to have gotten worse since more and more people started jumping off the cliff into the water.

    We used air this time, but whenever we plan to spend much time on the bottom, we use Nitrox. The bottom is 75-84 feet deep, and you are diving at altitude (~4,600 ft). So Nitrox helps extend your bottom time and/or reduce the risk of decompression illness.

    This is definitely on my scuba bucket list...I learned to dive around California's channel islands so I guess I'm a bit spoiled, but this does look like fun and different enough for me to enjoy.
    Stupid question for the regulars: I'm a long-haul trucker, traipsing around in a 75' long 40 ton big rig. Would I be able to park in there, albeit on a weekday when few people are there?

    • @vesler
      @vesler  8 років тому

      +Dan Bowkley Probably not. We pull a 28 ft trailer behind a pickup, but I don't think you could swing a 75 ft trailer around the sharp turn left turn (more than 90 degrees) that also aims you down a steep hill and narrow road. If you could get there, I'm not sure how you could back it out. Best bet would be to drop the trailer, then you could park the tractor near the hole.

    • @vesler
      @vesler  8 років тому

      +Dan Bowkley By the way, if you dive in California, then you won't mind the water temp of 61 degrees (constant year round). It might be a let down visually, but it's still kind of cool to say you did it.

    This was actually the first time I had used this camera and housing, so I was playing with different settings. The water is usually very clear anyway because of the constant flow of water from bottom to top. It gets murky on days when there are lots of divers or jumpers. On several clips, I was using video lights and did not use a filter. When I was not using the lights, I used a filter designed for underwater photography.

  • @vesler
    @vesler  11 років тому

    The water flows in from the bottom at the grate, so the water temp is the same at the top and the bottom -- a "refreshing" 61 degrees year-round. In the summer, when the air is 90+, the water feels good. In the winter, when it is snowing, the water seems warm. But 61 is still cold water when you have been in it for 45 minutes. So our group nearly always dives in a dry suit with hoods and gloves.

      Ah, yes, of course, thank you. I did my own check dive off Cannery Row in Monterey, CA, and they also had a buoy anchored to the sea bed about 30' down, but it was just a single rope. I remember going down with my instructor; the water was murky with low visibility. This seal came swimming out of the gloom and went nose-to-nose with my instructor, and then turned right around and was gone in the blink of an eye. Heh! My instructor turned to me, and his expression was priceless.

    This is true! It's not uncommon for divers to pick up trash & such at their dive sites. I live near a beach jetty. A lot of tourists are careless and leave a lot of trash behind and fishermen frequent the rocks, leaving copious amounts of fishing line, lures, hooks, beer cans, sandals, and etc. We're cleaning up the environment not only for the next divers, but to help the marine life as well. It's not easy trying to find a place to tuck hooks and trash & it's easy to tangle fishing line.

  • @imommabear
    @imommabear 11 років тому

    It was a lot smaller and more shallow than I visualized from the series. If you want to read about it, Blue Hole doesn't really show up until book 5. It's the portal between the dream world and reality. The heroes try to prevent the two world's collision.

  • @vesler
    @vesler  11 років тому

    Most divers are very protective of the environment. It is drilled into our training that we should "take nothing and leave only bubbles." So nearly every time we dive to the bottom, we bring up trash to keep the place nice. That said, not only are the props interesting, they also serve as training aids to teach new divers how to look for and look at things without touching surrounding structures. The hole is cleaned annually so that the "junk" does not collect.

    The wife and I are diving this, then Lea Lake next month, any suggestion how many days it will take to really explore the hole? we were planning 1, but after seeing the photos of how large it is, we may stay 2.

    • @vesler
      @vesler  7 років тому

      1 day, 1 or 2 dives. It isn't really that large, although the video (unintentionally) makes it look that way. It is 80 ft across at the surface, 84 ft deep at the grate, and about 110 ft across at the bottom (a bell shape). If you can, dive it on a weekday when there are hardly any people around. On weekends, there are always a bunch of jumpers who stir up the silt and screw up the visibility. On a good day, you can see all the way to the bottom. On the jumper days, you are lucky to see 15 ft. The water is cold (61 degrees year round). I recommend a dry suit or 7 mm wetsuit.

    • @vesler
      @vesler  7 років тому

      I don't know anything about the bottomless lake state park. There are some lakes on private property that are 300+ ft deep. Technical divers have been given permission to dive at times, but they are not generally open to the public, mainly due to liability concerns on the part of the property owners.

    • @Mrich775

      Perch Lake is a small lake near the Blue Hole. It is spring water, too, also 61 degrees. It is only about 40 ft deep, but there were a few things to look at last time I dove it (which has been awhile). I recall there being a car and a small airplane fuselage. You don't need special permission to dive there. The same permit that lets you dive at the Blue Hole should let you dive at Perch Lake, too.

  • @vesler
    @vesler  11 років тому

    I'll have to admit that the video makes it look bigger and better than it really is. It's cool and worth diving if you are ever passing through, but it's NOT really a destination.

      There is a bottom to the Blue Hole, but the water actually feeds in from a hole in the bottom. Beneath that there is a huge cave system that no one has been able to explore. As for standing the cold water, we wear dry suits. They keep you pretty warm for about an hour, which is about how long our air lasts.

    The hole is about 80 ft across at the surface, and about 100 ft across at the bottom. It is pretty small. It is about 84 ft deep at the deepest point (the grate). Most of the bottom is 65-70 ft deep.

    Just google or bing Leven Thumps, because I doubt I can post this wiki. It's a long series, but very imaginative, and some great lines throughout. The Series culminates here at the Blue Hole. en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Leven_Thumps Books are available on Amazon.

    I really want to learn to dive, but I don't have any places near me to dive (or learn). Plus I don't think I'd dive much (unless I moved). Well anyway, nice video.

      Thanks. There are places where you can go and learn to dive all in the same vacation. Some resorts offer Discover Scuba Diving which lets you try it out before you actually commit the time and money to the full course.

      School (laughter). My first open water cert' was paid by an employer.
      If you're employed as a civilian by USA-based corporations overseas
      it is a common practice to afford valued employees new recreation
      resources. My first offer during employment hours was paid flight
      instruction and free use of aircraft afterward . The maintenance was
      free after each flight. All I paid for was the aviation fuel for flights.
      It could have rated me as a reserve pilot for paid services at work
      locations in Oceania. I declined and asked what other paid training
      was available. My supervisor then said, "Would you like to explore
      World War Two using SCUBA located no further than 20 minutes
      from where you're standing ? " The US Army Corps of Engineers
      certified me for open water diving in Oceania. I explored sunken
      vessels and underwater coral reef caves. I previously had cave
      exploration training (Re: nss@caves.org). I'm retired but still
      seek unexplored caves in Canada and the USA for recreation.

    that looks so brilliant and awesome! do you like have to pay to dive? how do you breathe underwater?

    • @vesler
      @vesler  9 років тому

      At the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, NM, you only have to pay $8 to dive for the weekend. Breathing underwater is the same as breathing on land, only you are breathing compressed air that is attached to a regulator that matches the pressure to the increased pressure there is under the water. So it feels like breathing on land.

    • @HaileyRaeanimaljam
      @HaileyRaeanimaljam 9 років тому +1

      Vance Esler yeah but whats with all the bubbles? it seems like you have to breathe out without the mouth connected to the tank

    • @vesler
      @vesler  9 років тому +1

      Hailey Rae The thing in the divers' mouths is called a Regulator. It allows air to come in from the tank at a normal breathing pressure. When you exhale, the air is blown into the water by the regulator, creating the bubbles.

      I was 14 when I got certified. Maybe you should ask your parents if you can take classes. Diving is an easy sport that you can do your entire life. Learn all you can, there is some danger, but if you do it propertly you can do it safely.

    That is the truth! Luckily, the day I took this video, there was only one other person at the site, and we got in before he did. And he was a good diver who didn't mess things up anyway.
    The only thing worse than divers at the bottom are the Jumpers at the top! They mess up the viz terribly, don't you think?
