  • Demonstrating how suppressors work and why they often do not totally silence anything. The rifle is a .300 Blackout and the suppressor is the Banish 30 Gold.
    Note: Apparently, the sound at the muzzle is not just air rushing back in so fast; it's the release of the built-up gases being released, as well. I've never claimed to be a physicist, even though my degrees from MIT, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Harvard, and Yale indicate as much! :-) Anyway, the main point we're trying to make is about why suppressors do not totally eliminate the sound, especially with supersonic ammo, and how that's still a useful thing in many circumstances.

    Supressors are health and safety devices way more than some sort of tactical doodad. They should be in the same category as helmets and safety glasses, not something you have to pay and get on a list to even own. My family has been in law enforcement for generations and the most common health issue among our middle aged guys is hearing loss.

    • @josh885
      @josh885 2 місяці тому

      I agree but if the goal is safety the problem is with a silencer 99% of the time you are still not hearing safe, especially indoors and unless you have something like the state of the art and very expensive Huxwrx Flow 556K, you now also have the health risk of breathing all the carcinogenic and otherwise toxic gases that blow back into the shooter face with a silencer. Only way to be hearing safe is the use a really good silencer and subsonic ammo. At that point though you have pistol level ballistics, in other words really, really bad, for the worst emergency of your life. Instead of trying to use a silencer to get hearing safe noise levels from the firearm which requires giving up a lot of it's effectiveness, it is much better to have a suppressed 5.56 AR loaded with good supersonic ammo and staged with good quality electronic ear pro.

    As the bullet leaves the barrel, it has 60,000 psi of air pressure behind it. When the high pressure meets the atmosphere at 14.7 psi, it becomes low pressure almost immediately and releases the excess pressure as a wave we perceive as sound. The suppressor stretches out the time it takes to stabilize the two pressures which reduces the intensity of pressure wave.

      There is also a slight cooling effect on the high pressure gasses. Cooling them a little bit will also reduce their pressure. That is why the first round is usually quieter than subsequent rounds because heat flows from greater heat to lesser heat at a rate proportional to the difference in temperature. There being a greater difference in temperature for the first shot, more heat flows from the gasses into the metal of the suppressor.
      This phenomenon is also why squirting a little water into the suppressor to coat the inside and draining out the excess will make it more effective. The vaporization of the water will extract heat from the gasses. My experience with a friend who has a suppressor for his 45 a cap pistol indicates this trick is only good for one shot.
      Some people take this to the next level and put some sort of gel into the suppressor because it has a tendency to last for a few shots. Most are using a gel that their intimate partner may be familiar with, but I have heard of some electricians claiming that wire pulling lubricant also works well.

    About a month ago I got to both see suppressors in action and shoot them for the first time ever, it was a friend that brought a bunch of NFA stuff to the range, and it was the first time I got to see these things in action in person. He had sbr's chambered 9mm, 5.56, and 300 Blackout, and with suppressors on them they were still as loud as firing a 22 rifle without hearing protection but I could tell that the majority of the sound was the bullets breaking the sound barrier and cracking the atmosphere. We didn't have any subsonic ammo so. But yeah, that was pretty cool finally getting to see suppressors in action in person and even shooting Firearms with them on them 😁

    FWIW, the noise level of the sonic crack depends upon the size of the projectile. I measured the sonic crack of a 30 caliber bullet with Mr Alan Paulson (author of the book, "Silencer Performance and History") and from ten feet away, the sonic crack was about 155 dB.
    We also metered the action noise of an AR15 and found it to be approximately 114 dB.
    A good suppressed, subsonic 300 BLK should run in the low to mid 120's. (122-125 dB).
    For comparison, unsuppressed full power, supersonic 300 BLK will be approx 165 dB.

    With .300 Blackout its actually a delicate balance. Shooting 220 grain subs out of a barrel that long may not be sub sonic anymore, depending on the ammo. 220 grain subs out of an 8.5 inch barrel, with a good can, like the Trash Panda or Thunder Chicken, is indeed really damn quiet. The longer barrel builds more pressure, sending that round out a lot hotter, thats why 7.5 inch to 9 inch is the sweet spot for .300 BO. It was meant to be shot out of a short barrel from the get go. If you want to run a 16 or 18 inch barrel AR, just run 5.56

    In the military suppressors are mainly effective in the hiding muzzle flash, the noise can give up a general firing direction but the muzzle flash can pinpoint the shooter.

    From some testing I’ve seen in most cases that have tested this the suppressor will actually give a little more velocity to the bullet. And the work that the suppressor actually does is to slow the gas flow down before leaving the muzzle to give it time to cool because introducing hot gas to cooler air temperature will cause a loud bang. The hotter the gas and the more volume of it the bigger bang. Most people think that your hands hitting each other when clapping your hands is what makes the sound. But it’s not. The air rushing out from between your hands is what causes the sound. Just like a gator or crocodile slamming its jaws together, the air rushing outwards is what makes the popping sound. At least the majority of it. That is kinda what he is alluding to when he mentions the popping sound of the air rushing back into the muzzle. I must warn you that I’m no expert on this topic and may have not worded everything exactly as it should be.

    • @ExpatriotSilencers
      @ExpatriotSilencers 2 місяці тому

      It's not the mount of energy released but the speed at which that energy is released. If someone holds up.a pillow or piece of foam and you clap your hands over that, the noise is considerably less even though the energy release is essentially the same.

    Never thought I’d teach Hickok 45 anything, but the loud report of a firearm is the SUDDEN release of HIGHLY pressurized gasses. A suppressor “muffles” this by slowing the release of the gasses. It’s the same thing that makes a firecracker go bang.

    • @chrissewell1608
      @chrissewell1608 2 місяці тому +1

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  2 місяці тому +4

      Makes sense. I can just never forget how when I stick a muzzle loader barrel down in a bucket of water with the muzzle up. When you run a wet patch down the barrel and suck up the water to clean the barrel and pull the sealed patch out really fast, it pops very loud, almost as if firing a gun. The air rushing back into the barrel causes a very loud snap. Seems that THIS would be some of the same effect when firing a bullet, but maybe not.

    • @cavalieroutdoors6036
      @cavalieroutdoors6036 2 місяці тому +2

      @@hickok45that would be the case for a muzzle loader because the chamber is sealed and the patch can create suction while using the patch. But with any rifle being fired, the pressurized gas will expend out the muzzle until pressure is equalized, there won't be any suction to draw gas back into the muzzle.

    • @natbeach8141
      @natbeach8141 2 місяці тому

      @@hickok45 True, but the difference is when pulling a patch out you’re creating a vacuum. In the case of a firearm it’s pressure. Love your videos 👍

  • @dougdiamond299

    So how they actually work is that in a supersonic load there are two things exiting the barrel at supersonic speeds, the projectile and the gasses. In a subsonic load there is still one thing that is exiting the barrel at supersonic speeds and that is the rapidly expanding gasses from the cartridge that that pushes the bullet out. Because these gasses are still supersonic you still get the sonic boom from those gasses. The suppressor acts as a speed reduction device for the exiting gasses getting them redirected and slowed to subsonic speeds when they exit the barrel/suppressor. (there is no gasses rushing back in) The greater the reduction in the speed of the exiting gasses the quieter the firearm will be. It can get so quiet that the sound of the action is the loudest sound that the firearm produces followed by the impact of the projectile. There is always a trade off however in that to get the quietest possible one needs to reduce barrel length and replace that with suppressor length while keeping your bullet subsonic. I carried a fully suppressed HK MP5 for 4 years and it was completely silent but the barrel was only about 4 inches and the integrally firearm was essentially all suppressor but that resulted in an additional loss of velocity. But this was all for close range and the bullet weight was 146 grain at about 850 fps.

    The noise of muzzle blast and sonic crack are two different noises.
    1. Low powder charge to get bullet under the speed of sound will lower the blast pressure. Which turn lowers the sound.
    2. At Subsonic bullet velocity, you do not hear bullet Crack, let's say at 100 yards.

    To me, the most logical way to explain the muzzle pop is to compare it to a firework, mortar pop. You get an ignition source that launches the projectile, and then a report (crack, pop, bang, boom, whatever) after.

    I am not quite sure I can agree with this whole thing. The supersonic vs subsonic part, yes, that is it mostly. But I have a problem with the "air rushing back into the barrel" part. When the bullet leaves the muzzle, there is still a lot of pressure in the gun. There would have to be or the bullet would start slowing down. Your example of a muzzleloader being cleaned isn't a good one because that IS a case of a slight vacuum, as you described it. I think it's a combination of the bullet and the powder gasses, which themselves have a velocity of something like 5,000 fps. There's just very little of them so their contribution to the noise is slight.

      I suspect that with semi-autos there is only so much that the sound can be reduced (for the shooter) for that reason. I think it was Garand Thumb that was testing absurdly long suppressors, and while the sound level at the muzzle did decrease, the sound level by the shooters ear remained the same,
      An interesting test would be either to test the same suppressor on a semi-auto and a bolt gun, or on a semi auto that is capable of having the gas system turned off.
      I swear my suppressed .308 bolt gun is "more suppressed" than my suppressed AR.
