Bobby Witt Jr. shows that baserunning is not just about how fast you are, but how EFFICIENT you are. Yes, he has world class speed, especially for baseball, but he's not an Olympic sprinter. For him, his technique moving around the bases and infield is flawless, not an ounce of wasted time or motion. You can tell he's part of a multi-generational MLB family; he's trained up beautifully and knows how to get to where he needs to be at all times.
I want more speed in the game. I enjoy small ball at least as much as I enjoy home runs. Steals, stretching for an extra base, run downs, pickoffs, etc are all good for the sport.
That was my problem, couldn't slide for ish. I could steal mostly standing up bc of timing and a quick start thanks to hoops but my slide was a wreck. Never felt comfortable.
"Who is the absolute fastest player in modern, recorded MLB history?" Define your terms. What do you mean by "modern," or even, "recorded?" I'm almost 70, and to me, "modern" could mean just about anytime from 1900 or later. Likewise, "recorded" could mean recorded by video, recorded on radio, newspapers, box scores, etc. And finally, and I apologize if this sounds stupid to you, but even the word "fastest" is open to interpretation. Fastest in a 40-yard dash may not be the fastest at rounding the bases and getting to second, or the fastest at reacting to a line drive. These clips prove how ridiculously talented - and fast - Bobby Witt Jr. is, but I remember a guy named Bo Jackson who was pretty quick on his feet, and I would consider him to be in the "modern, recorded MLB" era.
The Chicago Cubs have a real speed burner also in Pete Crow Armstrong. Hard to imagine anyone faster than that guy, but Bobby Witt Jr. seems to hold the crown, (this year).
That sprint speed metric is an amalgamation based on every recorded base running action a player made over the course of a season , and may take into account when they were fielding as well . But it is not a good way to judge who the fastest player in baseball is , if anything its a hustle stat , because its averaging every time a player beat out an infield single and every time they jogged to first on a routine grounder as well . Based on who is fastest from home to first there is nobody in the sport faster than elly de la cruz
I'll take Jarren Duran in stretching singles into doubles a lil over Witt...Duran Regularly does things I've never seen on the basepaths in over 50 years of me watching the game...Routine singles into doubles like I've never seen and several of them.
Actually, no, it's a legal term. "Mr. Smith, when did you stop beating your wife?" begs the question because it assumes an event while disguised as a question.
The javy baez play was bad. He knew the speed of the runner and should have charged the ball to cut off as much time as possible. Instead he let it come to him which is a mental error.
Not enough data for such a bold claim. That being said, I love his speed out of the box for a RH hitter. No mention of Jarren Duran also makes the claim flawed.
That's less to do with speed and more to do with a number of factors such as: knowledge on when to run and when not to; having a lefty behind you helps your chances dramatically as it partially shields the catcher's vision when on first; the ability of the catcher to throw out runners; and whether or not the manager has allowed the runner to attempt a steal based on strategy and game situations.
@@Garrett1240I feel like Shohei’s season will change how players steal, it shows you don’t need to be lightning quick to steal bags. Shohei is only 70th in sprint speed. His base stealing is not that great... 76% success rate is nothing like the best base Stealers so something's wrong... At his speed he should be stealing at least 85%... Or at least something over 80% for sure

Hits like a monster, golden-glove defense, and speed? This guy is rare rare.
it also helps that the man knows how to slide. You see all these guys running hard and then making a terrible slide choice like they are in a panic.

That last play at home plate was crazy since he wasn’t even running full speed at 1st

The 2nd baseman has no arm like always
Altuve could throw 90+
Perhaps that'a why he's the 2nd baseman
You have to come up throwing with the speed of Witt

He has still been caught stealing bases 12 times compared to Ohtani's 4, even though Ohtani has stolen 59 bases to Bobby's 31.
