Restoring an ‘84 this spring/summer. Top end assembly this weekend! Sometimes I ask myself if it’s really worth it? And then I hear/see a video like this. It’s not just worth it. It’s important! Thanks.
Mines an 84 and honest to god, I'd to it in a heartbeat if I was younger and in good enough health to still ride it. Yes, modern bikes ARE faster, but 2 strokes feel like they're WAY more fun to me. I got semi carried away with mine back when I was in my early 20's and woo wee was it a blast. Head work, jug work (hours and hours of it by hand), pipe work, jetting it until the piston's dome the other way, then back off 1/4 turn, new race clutch that wouldn't just let lose, all the fun stuff. Didn't even have the speedo anymore.... Just dual pyro's and a tack and knowledge that something like 6K was 60mph. I think the biggest reason these are so fun is they're a bloody wheelie machine (No B.S., the first time mine hit pavement, I couldn't figure out why the shadow kept leaving the front wheel, they're insanely fun) and when they've got really peaky pipes, the power delivery is so immediate once those pipes start to hit resonance that for mine, you could whack those round slides all the way open at 5K and did so without fear. 6K and you were back to "why's that shadow not touching the front tire again?" problem. That bike actually scared every single person who ever rode it. You could warn people, but they think a 350 is a toy. It's always the same story, they roll into the throttle at 3K, get nothing, then hold it wide open, it hits 6K, the tire snaps off the ground like it had a movie set explosive ram under it, they snap the throttle closed, come back with a wet crotch and never touch it again. It's been 20 years since I rode mine, but from what I recall, even 1/8 to 1/4 throttle when you hit the pipes was dangerous. I always wanted a 500 or a 750 2 stroke, but it's probably a good thing I never found one and probably a good thing I just quit riding entirely. Lol.
Trust me it's worth it, just don't let my nephew near it he ruined my RD400 f 1979. 3680 miles on the clock he seized it up striped it and years later offered me £400 for it. I didn't sell it that scumbag but it never went back together.
Nice bike. You did some interesting mods to that thing. It sounds wonderful. I have 8 of these things and a one off custom 500. Keep up the good work. Need to go look at your channel now.
Wow, I didn't even know they made the RD series with the YPVS. Mine is the older type with plain old holes for exhaust. :P Same Boy that sound brings back memories. Thanks for posting, it's nice to hear that again. (Edited) I just noticed you did a lot of the same mods *I* did. Mine came with stuff like a center stand, battery for electrical, etc, but I yanked the center stand and replaced the battery with a big 10,000 uF electrolytic capacitor. It was kind of a bummer having the lights be entirely dependent on the bike running though. I laid it down at night once and holy cow it was strange. I low sided it first, slid a bit, then it quit and just instantly was pitch black. I felt it high side, then was in the ditch (Laid it down in a corner because a buddy of mine thought it was cute to chase me in his car, literally 5 feet behind me on gravel... On a street bike...). That was the day I learned that ditches LOOK smooth and soft, but they're actually full of things like tree stumps and bottles and rocks and such. NOT the best day. :/
The JL are good pipes, but this result / sound is not solely due to pipes, its due to the package & tuning combo (ignition + carburetors+airbox+cylinder heads+exhausts) If you search for other 350 with only JL pipes they don't sound and scream +12 000 rpm like this one... But the exhausts are the same 😉
@@RacingSM 👍🏼 thanks for the reply and for the video, I'm no expert, and I'm aware it takes more than a pair of well built pipes to make a 2 stroke run so sweet I was super impressed with the work done on the bike, obviously all bespoke and incredibly detailed, it is a work of art and a credit to the owner, I can only imagine the time spent 🙏🏼✌🏼
Sound absolut fantastic!😉👍. But kinda interested with the HPI ignition you lose the PV/CDI, I can see you guys drives with it fully open all the time, or is there a solution for it working with the ignition?
There is a way of making it work but it requires some time, and since we want to finish our other 2T projects ( 3 x 500cc) we prefer to let it be this way for a while riding with the YPVS always open
Bella moto y potente le farta el encadenado salio un RZ 250 y un TD 250 y RD 350 moto muy husadas en los años 84 por hay sino me equivoco mi esposa las tubo tenemos bellos recuerdos en ellas
your power valve cannot be adjustet, it's locked in place. At 01:28 you can see it. what's the reason of it? can it operate better full way opened? let me and the 2 stroke community know! thanks.
It's locked because we have original YPVS controller damaged, but soon we will use Zeeltronic PV controller. Of course it's better to have exhaust valve in use 🙂
Locked in the high position gives top power at high revs but loses out at low revs. The restricted uk 125cc had no control fitted and was locked in the low position, common mod was to reposition for top end power and lock it. Less obvious it was tampered with. I had the full fairing mk1 version in 1984 from new and could keep up with the 750cc four-stroke of the day but it was so light that they would be out manouvered in the little back road twisties.
Ahhh, the sweet sound of a two stroke. Music to my ears.😊 Fond memories of Yamaha RD350's and a lone Suzuki GT250. Upgraded to the RD350 YPVS, which I still have. Going to fire it up and go for a ride tomorrow. Farfagnugen!!! Or Happy Motoring in English.
Against a modern 750 4T ? Of course not, a GSX-R 750 easily has 140hp for +190kg, this RD 350 has around 70hp for ~145kg. If you are talking about Old-School 750 ( Honda CB 750 ) from the 70/80s, then, yes, the RD 350 is comparable.
It's a nice bike but, where's the Left Side cover. Where's the fairing that covers the Speed/ tach gauges. I wouldn't drive it in the Rain. It sounded great. I wouldn't Rev it to 12,000 rpm either while it sitting. I wouldn't Dog it out like that if it was mine. Love it, thumbs up.
Fico imaginando uma moto dessa com a ignição do professor Alisson, as original já gira 13 sucegado, imagina uma fuçadona assim com ignicao de primeiro mundo, módulo computadorizado né
Yamaha RD 350 YPVS aKa "Black Widow"! 😍💓
What ignition system are you using?

same engine as Banshee quad ^^
Aka "Mother of Banshee" 😆 kkk
Im at a loss to understand why anyone would "block" the power valves in the open state.
I remember these bikes back in 1987 - 1989!! Danish Police could not catch them and gave up 😎
This is 1 of the best tunes that really gives the best feel
350 powervalve was a gem in the 80s. Good old days.
Was driving an 84 reg in Dublin today and last few days. Has standard exhausts but love the sound of the all speeds/ microns!
