The other day, my whole family watched Man vs. Bee together. There were ten of us in the room, aged 4 to 76, and we were all laughing and enjoying. What a sweet moment, and what talent from Rowan Atkinson.
My greatest issue with the film is that the Plot Twist was unneccessary. Had I known what happened from the beginning it'll eliminate the cringe from the rest of the watch. It just makes sense that the antagonist deliberately did that but dont make me suspend my disbelief for 8 episodes.
Bean is a deeply flawed movie but there is about 20min of pure comedy gold in it, and the one thing they got right in 'hollywoodisation' of Mr bean where they forcably introduced talking was to give him Peter MacNicol as a foil
It's a different genre altogether, but it's an idea related to runtime I brought up to my wife years ago. She had a police procedural, no idea which one, on in the background. The bad guy had kidnapped a woman and had her hostage on a houseboat. At about thirty minutes into the 60 minute episode, he put a gun to his own head, then to hers. I shouted, "GEE, THINK HE'LL DO IT WITH HALF THE RUNTIME LEFT?" It gave me an idea- a mystery or police show on streaming that would make some effort to hide the episode length from you. You might have to screw around with the digital architecture on Netflix or something to make that work, but I feel like a mystery you don't know the runtime of would be super cool. It's like how movies can be so engrossing if they're really good and you don't look at your phone, just let time become irrelevant. I remember in college I'd watch new episodes of Marble Hornets on my Wii U, on the TV screen, and refuse to look at the time remaining. That was a cool way to get really engrossed.
You're onto something there. I really like the idea of cop show done in a shorter format. There would be so many cliffhangers to leave you guessing and the writers could work with that to do what normally wouldn't be done. We'd go from, "GEE, THINK HE'LL DO IT?", to "holy crap he did it!"
That's some good thinking. Maybe a cop show with standard half-hour episodes, but where the various investigations aren't required to start and end when the episodes do? So any time a new mystery is introduced, it might take up multiple seasons, or it might end with a seemingly random person butting in after two minutes, shouting a confession, and then committing suicide before anyone can react. Probably wouldn't fly in regular, once-a-week broadcasting, but it shouldn't be a problem on a streaming service!
I've taken notice when REALLY GOOD shows specifically mess with the progression of the plot relative to runtime in order to properly surprise me. I've only noticed this was an issue after I've seen shows addressing the patterns I didn't even know I had found.
I usually try to avoid looking at runtimes and the number of episodes in a season. If its a movie or show I'm highly anticipating then I skip the promo materials altogether besides the first trailer
I don't think it's the fact that it's a "Short". It's Rowan fucking Atkinson. He is a consummate comedian, in every sense of the word. He could make reciting they entire Library of Congress fucking hilarious if he put his mind to it.

I’m so ready to binge this show. As a huge fan of Mr. Bean & Rowan’s comedy, I cannot wait for the weekend to begin to watch this delightful looking show. I really wish we had more than the less than 20 known Bean episodes. I’ve rewatched my A&E Boxset 10x

glad to see ratkins getting more work. I like that he can be beanesque without being bean. Too many creators are like... oh i'm leaving that behind entirely.. followed by nevermind i'm milking that forever. There is a medium!
I thought this was a great vehicle for Rowan Atkinson. It's basically Mr Bean, but because he's playing a real person it's OK that he's older. Rather than a live action cartoon character, like Mr Bean, that feels a bit sad as an old man. While I hope there is no man vs bee 2, I hope the concept/character can live on and maybe hear about the man vs shredder that was hinted at.
He read about the bee being cast out from the hive. Then still tried to attack it. Then in finale he shares food with bee. But then tries to attack it again. I didn't like ending
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again… Rowan Atkinson is the best Doctor that never was in Doctor Who history. The man is more than diverse enough to pull all kinds of roles.
I just watched this yesterday and absolutely loved it. You could easily watch it on mute and still understand everthing and laugh just as much. I might watch it a second time this weekend and try that.
I thought the show was fine, it wasn’t my absolute favorite, but it was an easy show to watch with its short runtime (The perfect binging model imo). I do agree that it’s a nice throwback to classic comedy shorts.
As a fan of some of the classics you mentioned, I agree that silence and subtle reactions have largely become a lost art. I watched Man vs Bee on your recommendation, and yes, this was a breath of fresh air.
Another recent show (also on Netflix) that experiments with shorter runtimes is Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun. It's an Aussie sketch comedy show (which is considered genius to some, grating to others), and the episodes rang from average 20 minute runtimes, to only 12!
The best part about streaming is that shows can tell a story in whatever time it needs. The problem with streaming is that audiences think that every episode should be as long as possible, even when the story doesn't need that long of a run time.
Will Ferrell always was the embodiment of anti-humor for me. Never managed to make me laugh and even in these short clips he manages to annoy me somehow. Rowan Atkinson on the other hand is just naturally funny and charming, whether it be in his roles or in interviews where his intellect also shines trough.
rowan Atkinson still has good genetics. he's like 67 and still looks fantastic. one of thing i never found realistic is who has the balls in fighting against a stinking bee... i would run for my life. haha. i mean he tried to kill it like its an annoying fly.
This show reminds me of the movie mouse hunt. Which has a similar premise but instead it's two men and they're trying to get rid of a mouse, but ultimately fail in every attempt they make.
This show to me was just pure genius. Rowan Atkinson is just too funny😂. Although he’s a little bit more mature because he’s older now but just the whole premise of this show and story is fresh and still funny. We need more comedy like this and Jackie Chan does use physical comedy but with stunts. Still, he’s only the few comedians that can pull these physical comedies off and make it still funny and enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this series! I'm a big Rowan Atkinson fan, my best friend has met him actually. My parents have been to see Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson live who are very well known comedians in the UK and I'm a big fan of them too. I'm quite jealous tbh but I still think it's very cool.

I loved seeing the house destroyed, but it felt more like a 2 hour more, with recap every 15 minutes.
Your whole thesis is based on the assumption that this show wasn't just a movie that Netflix bought, cut into segments, threw some titles over, and called it a show. Which if you pay attention you'll realize that's exactly what they did.
This and the Hughes Bee both based on an old Donald Duck cartoon where he destroys his house trying to get rid of a bee that's bothering him on his day off.
Tried to watch it, all the "netflixisms" bog it down so hard. The first episode is 10 minutes of panning music shots and plot setup and sappy father stuff, 2 minutes of credits, and 8 minutes of comedy. If it was just the 8 minutes of comedy it would be much funnier
Great video and point made. This form of comedy is so old but sadly forgotten these days. Hope Rowan Atkinson gets to do more. And his IMDB even says he will bring back an older version of Mr. Bean :D
I'd recommend looking at Pompidou to see an attempt at a recent attempt at universal comedy. I find it charming, but I think a lot of other people hate it so I'd be curious to see you cover it.
I just started watching this series and this video sort of perplexed me. I had not really noticed the episode transitions, it really just feels more like a normal length comedy movie. Are we sure they did not just cut a movie into pieces?
That's exactly what they did. I read about this while they were filming it, and the report I read was that they were filming a MOVIE called 'Man vs Bee'. The decision to release it in Netflix and cut it into episodes to make it a limited series was definitely made either after filming was completed, or during filming. I think it was a good decision; a movie like this probably would have failed at the box office, and been savaged in the reviews, despite being quite a good bit of fun.
This is why slapstick comedy really needs to make a comeback. Comedians like Rowan Atkinson I admire for keeping this secret art alive
