I was introduced to Mr. Bean in the early 90s as a teenager. My local PBS affiliate out of Richmond, Virginia would play the episodes late on Saturday Nights with The Red Green Show and Doctor Who. What time to be alive!
I'm an English teacher in Vietnam. I cannot tell you how happy the younger students I teach get when I told them that we're going to be watching some Mr. Bean. even the older kids, they might not want to watch the Mr Bean cartoon, but they're still going to laugh
I’m a teacher of languages too . And I always show my bean since there’s little to no dialogue I can adapt it to all my students. It still makes them laugh.
I wouldn't say that he's a 100% silent character. Sure, his physical comedy and exaggerated expressions speak for themselves, but it just wouldn't be Mr. Bean without his usual grunts, mumbles, and occasional full words punctuating some of his best bits. The cartoon I'm 50/50 about. It's not bad, but it really just feels like a hat on a hat. You have essentially a live action cartoon character, and even if he did act things out for the animators to animate, the fact that it IS a cartoon series just feels a bit redundant. That said, I do respect him feeling he's too old and not as able to perform as much physical comedy, preferring a cartoon series or movie instead.
Sometimes when he does manage to open his mouth and let out a couple words, I actually find it just as funny as his more physical stuff. I never fail to laugh at the Christmas episode where he hangs up his stockings, only to get another stocking inside and mutter "Ah. Christmas Socks." And of course the time he went to church and confusingly and lacking any rhythm squawks "HALLEHLUULIA" during the hymn just always busts me up.
I guess they need to compensate for the disconnect from the rigidity of live action to the anything goes animated world. I give them all the credit for trying to keep that wackiness in a wackier format. They certainly translated it quite well, and the cartoon is entertaining in its own right. They know that they can't quite capture the cartoonish man in a real world setting in cartoon form, so they have to exaggerate in other areas. I did enjoy what I've seen in the cartoon, but it doesn't quite compare to the live series.
I loved Mr. Bean back in the 90's. I watched it at every opportunity on CBC in Canada. One of my favorite all time shows - it's not only funny but relaxing too lol, if that makes any sense. like the laugh tracks on old time shows, it never bothered me. To me it would just seem eerie without it. I remember one particular year they had a Mr. Bean marathon on New Years eve - one of the best New Years ever (the eve of 1995, if I remember correctly). I actually have old school home video footage of us watching it...good times and good memories. Oh and as for his return, I'd really just like to see him do another few seasons of the old school type of Bean. Just some wholesome episodes like he originally started off doing.
I love this character! I would say that a very similar character is done in Rat Race and I kinda felt that was missing from this video. Other than that, this is a fantastic synopsis!
Bean The Movie is such an amazing film. Howard Goodall's score for it is one of the all time great OSTs to any film and I ended up bawling my eyes out by the end because the music is so powerful. I don't get why Goodall isn't working on major films, he is incredible!
The end when Bean says he likes to stay till the end too.....warmed me right up that did. Something just so lovely about it. Love that guy, great video.
Awe! What a terrific mini-doc! Rowan Atkinson is my favorite comedian. He is just as brilliant as he is talented. Watching this made me so happy! Thanks!
Yes, I love the movie too. Part of it is that it was my gateway to the character. But the movie does hold up, giving us classic bits like Bean thinking the bird was a greeting
If you were a fan of the original show, that moment is when you say, "Here we go again. Americans ruining something good just because is not American".
I much prefer the second Bean film because it focuses on him more. I find it weird that you say there's no straight man character, when he travels on and off with two other people. If anything there are more straight man characters for him to play off.
I feel it's much more in the vain of the original sketch format too, since having him travel to different places to meet different people throughout the course of the film is almost like writing it as simply, a bunch of sketches playing after each other
Mr Bean's Holiday was closer to the series format, as it was a series of sketches linked with a single narrative thread. The sketches never had scenes without Bean present.
A while ago, I read a comment on how Rowan can retire the character with a neat little sendoff. The comment said it should incorporate the age argument by having Mr. Bean in a retirement home, bored. He then gets up and starts committing some shenanigans like he usually did. I find that a very good sendoff idea if it ever happens.
I prefer the Holiday movie over the first for the fact that there isn't an overabundance of dialogue. I think a whole lot of dialogue takes away from the mystique of the character, and the world he is in. Personal opinion of course. I do love the first movie and it does have some great scenes but it didn't feel like Mr. Bean completely just felt like a different movie that they dropped Bean into
I agree, TTBL is another underrated comedic gem. It only received mixed reviews when aired but actually was brilliant and has aged well. Not only was Rowan great in it as always, but the supporting characters were amazing, especially David Haig as Grim - still one of my favourite sitcom characters ever.
That or a version set in Margret Thatcher's cabinet. Sadly I think the creative team behind it are all pretty much Tories now so I don't expect that to happen.
Growing up, it was a treat that I was allowed to stay up late to watch Bean on PBS. While I appreciate the cartoon & his other ventures, the originals are the really the only Bean for me!
The situations and Mr. Beans reaction to them are hilarious. I'll never get tired of watching the Mr. Bean shorts. My late grand mother was a big fan of British comedy and kinda re-juvinated my lpve for the Mr. Bean skits. Great short documentary.
I love the musical number at the end of holiday! It's weird, but oddly epic and triumphant. And emotional! such a beautiful moment to see his joy at the beach! Very inspiring
I remember watching Mr. Bean on Sundays mornings with my parents back in 90-00's. Miss those days, however I think it's time to let Bean rest, he's already gave us a great share of happiness. Now it's my turn to sit down with my kids watching Mr. Bean.
You sir, don't just make videos for your subscribers. You make love letters appreciating actors of quality. Some have acknowledged your work and it shows. Definitely a criminally underrated channel. Keep it up! 😁 You give a forgotten hidden fan base a voice with each profound look back.
Just something to add to the success of the Mr Bean character, my 10 year old nephew and 5 year old niece LOVE the cartoon and still regularly watch it.
First class as usual Joe. Keep it up. I've always thought that Rowan is an example of someone intelligent enough to be an engineering student at Oxford deciding he prefers being funny to earn a living. I remember watching the Garry Shandling documentary and seeing a similar parallel and I love both of them as comedians. With Bean he was smart enough to know that if he created a character that crossed every demographic AND overcame the language barrier it would mean he could buy all those Aston Martins he wanted
I never realized how popular Mr. Bean really is. I too would like to see return to the small screen. He is so funny. I love comedy because I enjoy laughing.
Great video! I remember putting Bean the Movie on a lot, at the video store I worked at in hs. I hope Peter McNicol gets an episode someday; he's one of my favorite character actors.
Thank you for the reminder! While this video was playing I frantically searched my DVD collection, hoping I hadn't once again lost the different DVDs thru my sometimes over- generous lending habits. They were all there! I was pretty worried! Love how he and his creative partners went from the verbal gymnastics of Black Adder to the mostly non-verbal Bean to Thin Blue Line to Johnny English to other characters. The opening of Bean tv show with the spotlight on cobblestones and Bean drop-in made me think "Ah, he's an alien! THAT explains it!" Glad you brought that up. Again, THANK YOU!
I've always been a bit shocked by the small number of Mr. Bean episodes. For a character so famous, I would expect to see a LOT more. Just goes to show ya how good the show is!
I like your videos. I totally forgot about Mr Bean over the years. I was a theater nerd and we would watch him to get ideas about facial and body expressions. I'm now a 2nd grade teacher and one kid asked to watch the cartoon. The look on my face was in shock. Now we watch him every Friday. He always wins the votes even though they don't laugh. I find myself cracking up at them. They didn't understand the real one. But still glad to see he lives in a cartoon form as well.
I think i heard Rowan say in an interview where he's getting too old to play Bean character mainly because he doesn't want to see him get older. As well as the physical toll it takes for him to play the character. So he's definitely retired the character from live action.
I love the animated series. I started watching recently. I know Mr Bean is a silent character, but the fact he talks a lot more on the cartoon makes me love him even more, such a funny voice.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention that one of the reasons why Rowan created the character is that he had a severe stutter when he was a child. His unique style of delivery in Blackadder--I love the way he says 'Bob'--was developed for the same reason.
9:01 the older, distingushed looking man beside Mr. Bean was played by the late, great Richard Briers who was a giant of British television comedy in the 1970s and 80s, best known for his famous sitcom 'The Good Life' about a man who quit office life to become self sufficient. It is really amazing to see two different generations of great British comedy actors onscreen at the same time like that.
I agree, both characters are man-children but Mr. Bean is a bit more meanspirited (yet still likable) than Pee-Wee Herman is and I think the mean-spiritedness is part of the British humour.
@@JaredGriffiths2000 There's also the notion that Bean is subtle to the point of silence while Pee-wee likes to 'scream real loud' and that Bean tries to be haughty and ends up the fool while Pee-wee acts the fool to take the piss out of the haughty.
@@colinmcmasters5819 It was a children's variety show, three movies, and two stage shows, actually. All of them comedy. I don't see how having a children's show would be disqualifying but having a cartoon wouldn't.
Great idea to replace the laugh track with generic slapstick music. It proves the point perfectly. It was common practice for ITV to use fake laughter at that time, whereas the BBC would use a real audience, or not have a laugh track at all. I'm sure Howard Goodhall (pronounced good-all) could have come up with some fantastic bespoke music.
I'd argue that SpongeBob's current popularity is quite similar to Mr. Bean's 10-15 years ago. Thanks to old fans of the original series & films, as well as young fans of the cartoon interacting & sharing countless memes & images. I still remember people sharing those images of Mr. Bean's face photoshopped on to random celebrities, characters & babies. Then there were those countless edited videos of Mr. Bean saying Magic & YTPs that were popular around 2012.
I used to watch Mr. Bean episodes when I was growing up, it's sad to see that he may no longer play as Mr. Bean anymore. But I'm hoping that we may see him in the future being portrayed as Mr. Bean.
Well Howard Goodall did get a first in music from Oxford, as well as countless other awards since including three honorary doctorates and CBE for his services to music education.
I love the scene in the movie when he meets the girl with the same beloved car as his mini ❤ his movies totally held up with his character ❤️ Mr bean comedy class aaah Teddy too❤

As a Brit, I’m proud of our efforts to comedy
Is Rowan Atkinson 50/50 on Mr Bean nowadays? Sometimes he's reported saying he's not too big on playing the character at times currently.
mightyfilm I’ve always described Mr Bean as being more laconic than silent; he says only what’s necessary, and nothing more.
The cartoon has different sort of humour I guess. It's more rediculas, over the top, rather than a slap stick, physical comedy
I own one Funko Pop doll, it’s Bean, and that’s all I need.
Which one?
I have the one that has Teddy on his right hand.
@@MohinderPictures409 Me too!
I was at a friend house by mistake airing on CBC at the time in the 90s I stumbled by mistake for this show and fell in love !
I feel 1997's Bean is a super underrated and utter classic in 1990s American cinema, as well. Almost Cult Classic, a bit I feel.
Imagine a universe where the funny slapstick British man was called mr White and the powerful drug lord from New Mexico was called mr Bean
I've seen every Mr. Bean since I was a kid and I still bursted out laughing multiple times during this. Watch every Mini Doc you put out great stuff.
Same over here bud😂every time.
Gracias :D
I still remember when my grandma took me to the theater to see the first movie.
The end when Bean says he likes to stay till the end too.....warmed me right up that did. Something just so lovely about it. Love that guy, great video.
Thin Blue Line was also incredibly underrated
IM SO HAPPY YOU INCLUDED THE SCENE WHERE BEAN SHOWS DAVID THE PAINTING!!! It’s one of my all time favorite freak outs ever. So great.
I saw a video of people from rural Pakistan watching mr. Bean and they all loved it
I remember watching Mr.Bean's holiday at school.
Bean completely just felt like a different movie that they dropped Bean into
The Thin Blue Line is a great comedy show. One of my favorites by far. Especially the episode about the ER 🤣🤣
I agree, TTBL is another underrated comedic gem. It only received mixed reviews when aired but actually was brilliant and has aged well. Not only was Rowan great in it as always, but the supporting characters were amazing, especially David Haig as Grim - still one of my favourite sitcom characters ever.
Rowan is amazing. So glad I got to witness his work in my life time
I really want to see the Blackadder Space Pirate season they teased.
When I saw Mr. Bean's Holiday it was a packed theater, and it was Brilliant.
I loved the reaction from the Mr. Bean movie of the whistler's mother damage.
And I wind up on death row sharing a cell with Butch McDick!🤣🤣
Mr. Bean is probably one of the best comedy shows ever, so few episodes but such amazing material, even the clips here makes me burst laughing.
I'm so glad Mr Bean became a hit in America, grew up watching that and Black Adder. 💜
Amazing video, thank you.
Black Adder is some of the best comedy I’ve ever seen. Baldric!!! FRESH HORSES!!!
Mr Bean show was favourite internationally also because it needed no translation.
I was 12yo the first time I watched Mr. Bean, I was at a friend's house who had cable TV and I was instantly glued laughing, good times.
This was legitimately better than the 30th anniversary retrospective that ITV aired earlier this month. Well done.
Bean.
Another great job, boy these mini docs are a trip down memory lane. These skits and the mr bill skits would always crack me up.
Mr. Bean is my literal childhood. I loved both the live action series and the cartoon. Still makes me laugh whenever I revisit the originals.
You almost made me cry. In the scene where the waiter is Roger Lloyd-Pack. Eight years passed and he is missed.
Damn, right in the feels 😢. I was a kid when the Mexican TV started broadcasting Bean. I am a big fan! Thanks for this amazing video and tribute
A genius performer, actor and smart mind. All through body language this man managed to stay silent and become a huge success.
Great video! I remember putting Bean the Movie on a lot, at the video store I worked at in hs.
I hope Peter McNicol gets an episode someday; he's one of my favorite character actors.
Richard Curtis said something recently. He wanted to do an older grumpier bean
I agree, Peter MacNicol was amazing in the film, simply the perfect comedic foil for Bean.
The snickers advert and his Goodwood appearances as Mr Bean are great too
Thank you for the reminder!
I've watched a lot of movies, but I still believe the final scene of Mr Bean's Holiday is one of the very best.
I've always been a bit shocked by the small number of Mr. Bean episodes. For a character so famous, I would expect to see a LOT more.
Just goes to show ya how good the show is!
That red M&M is Billy West
I like your videos. I totally forgot about Mr Bean over the years. I was a theater nerd and we would watch him to get ideas about facial and body expressions. I'm now a 2nd grade teacher and one kid asked to watch the cartoon. The look on my face was in shock. Now we watch him every Friday. He always wins the votes even though they don't laugh. I find myself cracking up at them. They didn't understand the real one. But still glad to see he lives in a cartoon form as well.
The blue car is a reliant regal supervan 3. The same vehicle used in comedy sitcom only fools and horses. Another iconic piece of british comedy.
I have always thought that Mr Bean and Pee-wee Herman are perfect representatives of the difference between British and American comedy.
@@singaporesammy Good point
You should hardly even be calling Pee Wee "comedy." It was a children's variety show. Mr Bean is no Saturday morning kids show.
@@colinmcmasters5819 It was a children's variety show, three movies, and two stage shows, actually. All of them comedy. I don't see how having a children's show would be disqualifying but having a cartoon wouldn't.
This video made me so genuinely happy and nostalgic. Thank you.
As a child I had only ever seen the cartoons not until later did I find the og content
A Fantastic Video!, Mr. Bean was Awesome.
Bean.
I still can't believe how good the music of the first movie is.
Well Howard Goodall did get a first in music from Oxford, as well as countless other awards since including three honorary doctorates and CBE for his services to music education.
I love the scene in the movie when he meets the girl with the same beloved car as his mini ❤ his movies totally held up with his character ❤️ Mr bean comedy class aaah Teddy too❤
And the hits just keep on coming! Ser, your channel couldn't have a more fitting name for how it endeavors for excellence and earns my respect. As with the overwhelming majority of your work, my one word review finds me exclaiming "Excelsior!" in my best Stan Lee.
Thanks so much!
