I've been driving school for 10 years and the verbal abuse between students is horrible. Complete failure of parenting and discipline within the schools.

Absolutely ridiculous kids are acting like this! Shows how they're parents are and how they are NOT raising them! They need to lock them up and put them in juvenile detention and put their parents in jail! Have to stop letting them get away with this crap!

The gentleman Chris Perkins from what I see in this interview is a big reason they are having driver shortages - He said it is the drivers responsibility to bring the issue up to the school. Do you REALLY believe the drivers aren't bringing the issues up??? The schools do absolutely NOTHING when it comes to behavioral issues unless there is a danger of litigation. When you wright a student up you can for the most part forget anything more than a warning to the student. Then what they love to do is review the footage from the bus cam and IGNORE everything the student does and nit pick anything the driver may have done wrong in the situation. I know a bus driver who was being cussed out by a student who told the student "I am fed up with the way you are acting on this bus" The school didn't care that the student was cussing and disrespecting the driver after reviewing the footage the driver was called into a meeting to discuss their "lack of respect towards the student by telling them they were fed up with them" They were told lol "You are to show respect to those kids on your bus" this after the F word being thrown repeatedly at them. As far as the referrals going down of course they will go down once you realize that you are wasting your time (time it takes to fill out the forms than most likely get called into a meeting where nothing will happen to the student but more likely something will be found wrong with you all on YOUR OWN TIME) than you get to the point where you only write up kids to protect yourself so you can say I tried to stop the behavior.

Yeah, yet another empty-headed bureaucrat reciting a well-memorized, well-rehearsed spiel doubtless written by a lawyer for the district.

Sorry, but the drivers most likely aren't speaking up because they know nothing will happen if they write up a kid

Or worse. When a child does get written up, that parent would literally complain about it instead of taking accountability.

Hes trying to shift the blame. Decades of speaking up and drivers words are falling on deaf ears. The school system will continue to lose teachers and drivers because of just not caring to correct bad behavior.

I'm a bus driver in year 9 of driving for JCPS. I'm blessed that my kids this year are really great, but early on, when I was less senior, the kids "not so much". My 1st year driving I had to deal with a 4th grade bully that the school principal just DIDN'T care what he did. There was a time I had to block the bus aisle with my body (while being pummeled) to protect his intended victim. She just wanted to "sweep it under the rug." Worthless little punk was a blend of Eddie Haskell & Charles Manson. If HER kid was on the bus being victimized, I bet it would be different.

Little known fact: Schools don't suspend children because they get funds based on attendance...Always follow the money...Even during the pandemic schools were funded if the student logged in....The school didn't care if the child learned anything, they only cared if the student logged in, that counted as a student being present that day.

Little known? I think more people know than you may think. But since the school principal or the district brass aren't the ones driving the bus, they don't consider it their problem to solve.

The drivers are alone and responsible for their lives and they get NO support from schools. The drivers have to pay attention to traffic and bad drivers they really need to add someone to assist with kids while they drive. All the moms and dad's out there that have driven groups of kids with their friends and can't pay attention to driving while their own kids scream and fight with each other? Multiply that times 18 rows of seats instead of one back seat.

My advice after driving a school bus for 8 years after I retired early from industrial work. ------ Don't do it. It's very risky. You can be sued personally for anything that happens. One mistake and you can lose everything. I have seen it happen to drivers.

This is very true. Schools put the burden on the driver rather than the kids and the parents who raise them. I did 7yrs of driving in to different counties but the kids are only getting worse.

I have about three weeks training to become a bus driver; I do not how to explain how horrible has been this experience for me.
I can say that this regular students must to be called "special needs student"
They do not respect anyone or any adult. Their misbehavior is ......
Lord has mercy of the school bus driver. We do not want to be killed because of a pay check. We deserve law protection...

yep-same here-I get very discouraged with the non discipline that write ups produce, the schools are always"we will do something, we promise"but when a students gets 5 write ups for spitting, hitting, pinching, profanity, fighting etc., its all lets see the video, I dont believe its all that bad/parents have hardships-they will protect that student because they just dont want to deal with the parent, even tho they just ignore all the victims of these kids. Bus drivers are way underappreciated no matter how much they say otherwise.
One thing I am lucky on tho, we have cameras on our buses, so if students start trying to get me in trouble, its all on tape, and some have tried last couple of years and the cameras have shown the truth every time.

safety should come first and if a child is jeopardizing the safety of other students by acting up on the bus it could cost them their lives. Parents need to make alternative arrangements for this child to be taken to and from school. This needs to be put in law as a right to refuse service if it jeopardizes safety.

Umm! Wonder why that number has gone down in 2020 and 2021?
Maybe because kids didn’t go to school half the time due to the pandemic? Just maybe

"We've trained our drivers to handle behavior issues on buses" "Oh look, behavior incidents have decreased!"
This just means they gave the drivers an hour or two of worthless "de-escalation training" and then started deleting discipline referrals and telling drivers to handle it themselves because "they're trained on that now". Same thing happens to teachers. So many principals who get paid six figures to handle discipline issues completely skip out on doing their jobs by instituting "handle it in the classroom" policies.

Sounds familiar, and instead supervisors would rather start accusing you of stuff because they don’t want to enforce consequences for students

I think it is sometimes bad parenting. I have seen a video where sometimes the couple's arguing could also be setting the stage for trouble where one side says for the kids to fight the bullies with violence and the other side said "NO!" Sometimes if the parents do get a bus write up in the mail instead of talking to the culprit about the misbehavior on the bus, they would go and take it out on the bus driver by lying about the whole thing. Now I wonder if the parents are saying to those who are afraid to drive a bus "chicken". Now keeping the footage confidential I think could be a way to where nobody can alter the footage.
