- New and seasoned archers alike both can overlook something as simple as keeping their mouth shut while shooting their bow. If you shoot your bow with your mouth shut you will have much tighter groups and higher scores!

65 years old, been shooting since I was knee high to my dad! In all those years I’ve never heard of such!
But, it makes perfect sense! The lower the jaw - the lower the anchor - the higher the impact and more inconsistency!
Something else to pay attention to - hey, your never too old to learn something! Thanks Jake!
This 411 is priceless, jake I appreciate all that you do
Thanks Jake for pointing out this small error, which makes huge impact on target. Truly appreciate it🙏 Sharp looking jacket as well👌😁
Wow! That makes totally sense, opening the mouth changes the anchor point and more likely will always makes us too high. Thanks!
Did Jake just pinpoint the one thing I couldn't figure out about my shooting inconsistencies the day before my first local tournament? Yes he did. Thanks!
Something so small and easy to forget. Thanks for the lesson/tip. This will help me
This totally makes sense when you think about it. Problem is hardly anyone thinks about it. I've seen a few recurve archers wearing mouth guards, I can only assume it's because it' so they get a consistent mouth closed position for a consistent anchor point.
Jake that's really amazing
Thanks for pointing out details like this. God bless.
Thank you Jake!
You gave me something to think. Maybe some shooting days I thought I was having a bad day, were because of not "shutting my mouth"
Glad someone has brought this up, I always figured as such but little is said or mentioned about it. I would've killed for your videos as a kid lol, great job as always!
Thanks
My coach told me this a long time ago, but I haven't thought about it for a while. This is timely advice an hour before I go out to my own practice.
Hi Jake! Great video again about small things which matter. You allways find something new to learn from. And I would really to like see you some day in Finland 👍
Jake i can't believe one simple action could make the grouping so better never have i heard anyone pick up on this I'm doing my coaching course at the moment i will definitely teach the new archers this simple thing thankyou informative content as always best regards from England.
Another great video. Makes perfect senses why this would make an impact on form. Wondering if you could do a video on Split Finger vs 3 Under.
As you do so often and so well you hit on a specific item that really can affect groups and impact.
Can you just imagine seeing someone at full draw going for a sweet shot and then starting to talk bullshit?... Jesus 😂😂.... Great video there, Jake. A must-consider one 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you
Very interesting!! Thanks for the great video!!
Woops, think many bowers, even think and know this, ... truly genius thinking and shocking many folks out in the woods ... ;)
Shut your mouth while shooting, could be great Shirt logo. The grip looks awesome not sure if it's available at rcore 😄
After watching this I thought it made perfect sense but felt sure it wasn’t something I did. How wrong was I? Made the change and it’s made a massive improvement to my grouping. Thanks Jake.
Easy fixes are the best.
Teeth shut, tongue touching the roof of the mouth. Get angry.Great point.
Instinctive shooter - Had a similar problem with clenching my jaw when shooting, sometimes I did it sometimes I didn't, realised I was essentially moving my anchor in or out half an inch, either way, depending on if I was clenching my teeth or not.
I dropped my anchor down (barebow) to an under chin engagement a few weeks ago, and I suddenly realised I was doing this! It was a complete epiphany.
disclaimer: relevant only if you anchor under the jaw ... in a high anchor like cheekbone or similar near eye level is not affected ...
I had never considered the issue but, as soon I though consciously about it, I discovered that my mouth was open some of the time. I tested this for myself today and had better results almost immediately. My barebow groups aren't as small as yours, but they decreased in size nonetheless. Thanks!
Interesting when you shot with your teeth touching, first arrow 10 second low left 9 then when you went back to shooting with teeth touching exactly the same thing and then the last arrow shot with teeth touching, arrow was back in the 10 ring creating one group with your first arrows and another group with your second arrows. Yet shooting with teeth apart fully or part open two consistent groups forming. Just an observation.
I noticed sometimes I opened my teeth and my jaw kind of moved to the left. My anchor is near mouth, so it must have had an impact on the arrows flight.
I noticed I was unconsciously shooting (bare Bow) with my mouth (teeth) open and found it strange. I only noticed it when my wife mentioned it. I wondered if it made a difference, and well, now I know! Thanks for the video! Awesome!! (Lucky I didn't end up becoming a string licker!!🤣🤣)
Noticed that in myself. A little bit different. I kinda snap my jaw at anchor/expansion. Shows up on camera too. Since it's accompanied with angrier expression I figured it must have something to do with some sort of unconscious primal aggression. I was thinking maybe gum but haven't tried it. Got too much going on already.
Hi, Jake. Would it be possible for you to let us know which finger tab you're using in this video, and how you achieved the strap configuration that allows all three string fingers to be strapped to the tab? Thanks, Samuel.
It's a AAE KSL Gold tab. He's got a video on modifying it for the strap like that. ua-cam.com/video/rAJqaUtvQew/v-deo.html
I know now archery is no sport for my wife .
She never shut her mouth 😂
Just kidding, nice to see 😊
Are their REALY ANY small variables that do not make a difference in archery ?😁
If I have to keep my mouth shut can I bite my tongue?
So now I'll need to look into mouth guards or smth to match my crooked teeth comfortably together... :/
That's life for ya, anyway thanks for this clip. :)
No wonder my exwife is a lousy shot….she just never shuts her Mouth 😅
you are...mouth-walking! XD
jokes aside...have you ever thought of doing videos specifically about Field shooting? dunno about the US, but in "the old world" participation numbers are declining, and the major complain you here is because it's difficult, even more than WA 3D (which it isn't by that much, especially if you know how to estimate distances).
True. You can't chew bubblegum while shooting a bow.. wont work. 🙂
