    I bought RE2, after playing two scenarios I bought all the expansions. Then I backed RE3 all in. I'm one who's backing RE all in. :) Needless to say: I am a fan of the video game series, and RE2 and 3 both follow the game stories very well - not the film stories, the films were basically "in name only".
    There are some differences between the three from the previews: first the map is slowly uncovered as you open doors, where in previous ones the whole map for the scenario was built during setup. You also did not have missions to send spare characters on. There was no way to burn corpses, and they didn't get upgraded to Red Heads when they got up. RE2 was a linear experience whereas RE and the first half of RE3 are more open-world. There will also be the usual differences in weapons and enemies based on the game. I've not gotten round to reading the rulebook through yet, but I did watch Board Game Co.'s gameplay video with the designer where they do talk about the changes from previous versions (I likely have forgotten a few notes too).
    I agree that from a board game perspective there's not a massive amount of difference between them - it's like the difference between Fury of Dracula 2nd and Fury of Dracula 3rd/4th: you wouldn't keep both on your shelf as there's not a large number of changes between them. However since these are thematic story-based games, you may want to keep them. I'll be keeping all three... but then I have far too many games anyway. :D
    One thing to consider for anyone thinking of backing this: if you get only the base game, then like RE2 and RE3 you will only be getting half of the story. It will no-doubt end in a decent boss fight, but if you're familiar with the story from the video game it will likely only cover about half. So that is a point against it for some people.

    Largest difference is that in RE3 (and I think RE2), the map is fully laid out, while in RE, there will be a deck that reveals the room as you go, which is a great improvement

    this is the first RE board game I think is truly interesting. It looks like NOW they finally got the formula right. Just like 2nd edition zombicide. But that one died out faster than I thought was possible!
    RE2 board game was the 1st and the dark tiles put be off so much. Also felt the missions were kinda same-same, straight forwardness.
    RE3 board game felt like an odd one, but many improvements, the danger track and more fluid mechanics and options with skills.
    and then RE1 board game, all best things combined with defensive items, a true "explore and backtrack" feeling as true to RE. And tons of more variety in weapons, characters, enemies. All just BETTER on all fronts

    I believe Resident Evil 1 is different from 2 and 3 in that in the previous versions you were able to open doors and see what we're in each tile so you can decide if it is worth exploring...or be like "YEAh nope" and close the door. Resident Evil 1 all you know is the shape of the room/tile and you will have to enter to see what is waiting for you. Correct me if I'm wrong :3
    Yeah, there are a lot of campaigns, and even though I would like them all, just getting Resident Evil 1 and TMB. And maybe also spend extra on the insert trays cause they are my kryptonite. I also love this series and thank you, Chris!

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому +1

      Oh interesting. I wonder why they opted for the change. I guess it would be more tense this way. Oh I love insert trays as well, anything that helps get something to the table I'm such a sucker for.

    • @madbart214yomother7
      @madbart214yomother7 2 роки тому

      Didn't care much for the insert trays in 3. They could have gave you an idea of how to store everything but you kinda just get to make up your own. Also yes, exactly. 1 is more random than the other 2 it looks like and has more variety. 2 forced you to find what you needed, 3 gave a choice of how you got to the ending but 1 is random from the getgo and looks like the encounters are random as well with no set monsters in the room like 2.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому

      So you don't agree it's not the same as Resident Evil 2 or 3? Or is it because you love RE2 and RE3 that you know you'll love this one? I guess my point is that if you love RE2 and RE3, you'll love this one, but for those jumping into the series they could probably find a copy of RE2 or 3 for cheaper.

  • @EALionheart

    I'm torn, because I love Resi 1 Remake, and I'm no stranger to paying big bucks for games, but I should maybe play the others first to see if I'll like this one.

    • @madbart214yomother7
      @madbart214yomother7 2 роки тому

      The others are not similar gameplay wise and it'll be a different game. 2 is base level but the add ONS are hard to find for a decent price and kinda necessary thematically if you played the games. 3 is just as random as this game except you choose what areas you want to go to but nemesis can show up in any area and cause you to die off very quickly due to overcrowding. This game let's you play side characters on side missions while still playing the main game but even that is random as you unlock rooms. This is the cheapest game I would say because the retro pack is not needed (ever), the game case is kinda lousy, the player boards aren't needed, the only thing necessary is the game on Kickstarter cause after today, you won't be able to get all the extra characters and 1 of the 2 expansions. Terrain is helpful but can be bought on Etsy or something later on if you like. I have the other 2. It's worth it just don't expect it anytime soon cause 3 took forever to get here.

      Haha, honestly I get that. Sometimes that's really all you need, especially if it's to sustain the excitement until it arrives, the mystery of the game is also a real thing. I don't like to look through decks of cards because I like to keep that surprise intact.

    I have spent over $1000 on steam forge stuff. Almost bought this one. I had fun with their games, but honestly they are not worth it. I justify the cost because I painted everything and use the models for dnd.
    If you are not painting the models, then totally not worth it.
    The models in this upcoming RE look much better than the previous ones, but still... meh. Too much money for a game no one will play with you. If you have RE friends, maybe you go through the game once if you are super lucky. Then no one will ever touch that again.
    I have played dark souls many times, and even my super dark souls fan friends got tired of the game after playing through half the expansions.

    I've had Zombicide Black Plague (+ bosses) since it came to retail, and really that's about all I need of the genre. It has some good fantasy models I can pull for other games and more than enough scenarios to hold my interest when I want to occasionally play. This offers story and lore, neither of which I have interest in with campaign games coming out all the time and unplayed tabletop wargames hanging out in my basement. If I think of zombies, I'm going mindless hack and slash, not some LotR epic journey.

    Regarding Reason #1: I think when it comes to BGG rankings, the average rating often matters more than the exact ranking. A game might be very good, just not popular. However, Kickstarter board games sadly get a lot of random "10" and "1" rankings from people on BGG, often just out of hype or "to balance out the [insert opposite extreme rating]". Checking the BGG pages and excluding the 10s and 1s, and reading some comments from people who rated the game, that's very helpful in deciding whether a game was well-received and will likely fit your tastes or not.

    Thanks, Chris, I really appreciate all these "shouldn't back" videos you put up. I'm totally guilty of #3, having backed TMB, MotU and MU:X, and probably Skyrim coming up. I think another big reason not to back is based on name value alone. That was what got me to pledge Day-1 on RE without knowing anything about this game. But having a deep reflection within my soul (and at all the other games I've got/have coming), I am most likely going to jump ship on the last day since I can't see where I would fit a game like this into my very-limited free time schedule to play.

    Although I am an All-In backer and I'm super excited for this game, I found your video very fair and informative. I was fine spending almost $400 on this game to get all of the content (including enough extra sets of dice for everyone at the table and the extra six miniatures they added after the campaign) because I know for sure this game is right up my alley for a few reasons.
    1) The 2002 Remake of Resident Evil was my favorite game up until RE2 remake came out so the dark mansion setting on the tiles is just so captivating.
    2) I've been a sucker for dice chucking wargame dungeon crawlers ever since I discovered my uncle's copy of Descent 1st edition on his board game shelf when I was 8.
    3) I can't wait to experience Resident Evil at a table with three other people.
    4) I really feel like this system will be able to capture the survival horror perfectly.
    Plus I haven't gotten either of the others yet, however I'm planning on snatching up a cheap copy of 2 and 3 when I can to complete the collection.

    BGG ratings don't really matter to me, since (correct me if I'm wrong) they are largely dependent on popularity. Ratings also have to be taken with a grain of salt.
    I already have RE2 all in and RE3 all in. I'm getting RE1 all in as well. But, I don't just love RE, I am obsessed with it. I've played RE2, and I agree with all of your points, especially in regards to SFG focusing on making the game thematic first, and mechanical second. But for someone like me, in this particular case, that's perfect.
    It's a basic dungeon crawler. Only (consider) getting this game if you're really, really into the IP (that's just my two cents).

    • @chaosxblade579
      @chaosxblade579 2 роки тому +1

      Plus determining if you need this now or could you wait. The alternate costumes are a consideration. For me, it's an interesting Kickstarter stretch goal to be mixed with additional enemies/characters. It's like referencing back in the day secret/cheat codes to change the attire of the main characters. And when I take it out, every figure has a chance to be used as some are just skins. The campaign is also cool as it has backers vote on which direction the cast takes. Adds a unique interaction and is very thematic.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому +1

      Great advice. I'm glad to hear 2 and 3 have lived up to your expectations of enjoyment though, that's great! Yeah I usually use the ratings as more of a bar, I find it more helpful to click through and see people's mini ratings, why they opted to give it the number they did.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому +1

      There are some slight differences, some people in the comments have mentioned them, but to me they feel pretty similar just from reading the rulebooks. I haven't played either but I have gone through the rules of both RE3 and this one at least, and my glancing at RE2 makes me feel they're all based on pretty much the same system. I think one big change is in one you can't peek through the doors to see what's on the other side, so you just have to take the risk if the zombies are there.

    I wanted to Late Pledge this game so badly because I'm a diehard fanatic Resident Evil fan. It is literally my favorite franchise of vidoegames, I have all the Anderson RE movies even though they're pretty awful as a faithful adaptation and I have a couple of the animated RE movies, plus the books and some figures.
    I remember way back when Resident Evil 2 boardgame was on Kickstarter, I missed the campaign but almost late Pledged that one....but every time I get a little eager or hyped, I remember that it's Steamforged Games who's working on this games. From my research and such, all I tend to find are mostly negative and upset backers or very resounding mediocre "mehs" to their stuff. The Resident Evil IP is perfect for a boardgame and I like the concept of exploring unsafe areas and that even a single Zombie can be a menace. I just....think I'll wait for retail to maybe get this. I've talked myself out of Late Pledging but if it and the Boss Expansions are in sale later on...I can see myself getting this for the novelty and my love of the IP

  • @codycampbell1078

    I'm deciding to back it, tho at the bravo level. Never done a kickstarter or RE, or even a Steamforged game before. To me, I was on the fence with RE2, didn't even look at RE3, but I'm more interested in this because of the character/mission mechanic on top of the other game mechanics. I like knowing my other characters can do stuff who aren't in combat. I like knowing I can swap to someone else if my A-team gets injured. Will likely play it multi-handed solo.

      I think these games are great for homebrewing and making your own adventures and rules. 2 was a great game the only real drawback were the dark as hell tiles. 3 revamped alot of it and made it choice driven and had plenty of different gameplay but still similar areas. The best way to play any of the games is by playing as the other characters they give you by backing. Playing as brad or forest? Why not.

  • @aaronm.837

    Thanks for continuing to put out these videos, Chris. I can't believe how many campaigns are doing so well in such a short span of time. I think there are a couple others that'll be reaching the million dollar threshold soon too. Even the games I have 0 interest in backing, like this one, I still really enjoy watching these videos (and your Crowdfunding Countdown series). I'd like to think the points and questions you raise have made me think more critically about game mechanics and what game features actually will translate into more enjoyment for my gaming group.
    Anyway, regarding RE, I think your 5 reasons ring true. While I haven't played the previous iterations, I looked them over too and I agree, they all seem like the same game. I'm really hoping this is just an anomaly with 2 "spiritual successor" campaigns in 1 month, and isn't a new trend in the industry, because this game looks like it should just be an expansion, not stand-alone.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому

      I'm glad :) In a way I feel like at a point I'll have covered most of the regular reasons and hopefully won't be repeating myself too often, but it never hurts to have that hype check and then take a slightly deeper look at the mechanics. It's pretty nuts each of the 4 games that crossed the 1 mill threshold these past two weeks is an expansion/spinoff of some kind. But I guess that's also the benefit on having existing audiences who enjoy the games so much that they want more.

  • @kevintickell2452
    @kevintickell2452 2 роки тому +1

    The main differences from the previous 2 board games that I have recognised so far are: addition of puzzles to the scenario’s, addition of missions for reserve characters to go on, modified encounter mechanisms for newly entered rooms which introduces a new deck, the map isn’t laid out in full from the start; you uncover the layout as you play so that you can’t strategise the scenario before you even start (also this isn’t mandatory to play, so if you prefer to lay out the whole map at the beginning you can choose to do this), the Kerosene to destroy corpses so they don’t come back as Crimson Heads. There may well be more that I can’t remember or haven’t found out about yet. I did find it interesting that in your first point you said that the tension didn’t one from the gameplay mechanics, but the theme; then in your next point said that you wouldn’t have enough ammo to rinse everything, so would have to be cautious with ammo and the way you play, making you nervous about entering a new room. Felt a little bit of a contradiction, but maybe I misinterpreted you. I like the video by the way, but a lot of the things you talk about are the reasons I backed this game lol. I’m a big RE fan though, so it would be hard for me not to back it! Keep doing your thing man, I really like that more and more people are passionate about board games these days, feels like they have been making a come back over the last decade. All the best.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  2 роки тому

      Haha, yeah definitely somewhat of a contradiction, but I think what I was trying to say is that for those who are purely mechanic based it's not going to land as hard as if you're really into the theme, you're feeling the atmosphere, and you can feel those dwindling bullets, rather than just not having a lot of one resource.

    I have played RE2 and RE3 and went all in on both. I am happy to clarify the reality of what is different between the two games and how this will impact the upcoming RE1. The positives are they they have everything they is in the original video games. The monsters, characters and minis are fantastic. However, the games do basically play the same. RE3 is better because of the evolving tension deck and variety of levels. Oil drums, spreading fire, powering up a lift and flooded sections add variety. If someone is unfamiliar with the IP then maybe one game is enough though. I’m a fan of the series and regularly play this and getting RE1 was a no brainier to me. If you’re not the biggest fan maybe only get RE3 over RE2.

    This one's definitely gotten my attention. I didn't have any experience with the video games of 2 or 3 but I have messed around with 1 quite a bit so it's quite tempting just for the IP. The biggest negative for me is the $$$. I haven't pledged anywhere else but a bunch of PMs I was attached to end/ended this week so I don't have a lot of wiggle room for new stuff. If I do go for this it'll just be the Beta pledge with maybe game trays and an extra dice set. Still kinda pricey for what it is, but every steamforged game seems to be on the really high end thanks to those licensing fees and built in VAT.

      It's got a while to go before it hits my million dollar threshold, but I'll definitely cover it in my weekly Monday crowdfunding videos if it doesn't make it there, usually those are just mini versions, I read through all the rulebooks and try to highlight interesting mechanics and whether or not I feel it's worth it

    Nice video... although... after watching it, I am more inclined to buy the game :p

    I don’t have RE2 and RE3, I watched few videos and they seem funny (for fans only), actually I would like to play them. I didn’t know if back RE or not, but all those stretch goals and also the idea the RE is the most iconic video games, I back it purchasing 2 copies. I am pretty sure that I can sell the brandnew copy (the ALL IN version) for the double with all the stretch goals and then have my copy for free. 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Am I fool?

      It's a tough call. If you look at the price history for Resident Evil 2 on BGG, you can see a few of them sold for big bucks, around the 300USD range, I'm not sure how much they would have cost to begin with. I don't think you'll be able to get double for it, that's my guess but I might be wrong, but you might be able to offset the cost of shipping and make a little bit on it. I always think about flipping as a concept and am never that inclined to do it because of the work/risk involved if the game turns out to not have an audience, or everyone already got a copy who wanted one, but a lot of people do it.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews well… we’ll see! I saw on eBay sold for 500USD RE3 KS edition that why I said the double. I guess that in the worst case I will have back my money with no gain. I bet on the title and also on the “carisma” of the first chapter and the mansion. Let’s see what happens. In any case, thank you very much for your video, I backed the campaign but I got your points. Actually I never played RE:BG but I see that the mechanics are the same, the strength of the franchise against the mechanics and also the feedbacks of SFG. It seems the best chapter of the 3 already known (they will do RE:4 with “‘MATALO” card) for mechanics but I am a fan and I love “zombies games” (I LOVE DEAD OF WINTER: THE LONG NIGHT!).
      Thank you very much and best regards from Italy 😉

    This is the first RE campaign I have seen and I threw in a pledge early because I was pulled in by nostalgia to the IP and the zombicide-ish vibes I got from my first look.
    A week in now and after diving into the campaign a bit deeper, I am intrigued by the game mechanics but am a bit doubtful about how much I will enjoy the resource scarcity... the SG/unlocks thus far consisting almost exclusively of multiple odd "alternate costumes" for the base characters and the high price point for the Alpha pledge/expansions compared to the contents has me thinking that I may have wandered into the wrong campaign.

      Resident Evil 1 is $10 more than the previous versions. From what I checked, Resident Evil 1 has little more of everything (e.g. enemies, scenarios, and more).

      Yeah also the first one I've really paid attention to as well. I'm also definitely intrigued, the scarcity I think I would mesh with, I'm always the guy who at the end of the game still has an inventory filled with potions because I needed to save them for the right moment, haha.

      Just get base game for the extra characters on Kickstarter and 1 of the expansions if not both and you have most or the whole game. Trays are needed (zip lock bags work just fine or make your own) retro pack is redundant and not needed, the player cards aren't necessary cause your gonna need open floor or a big table to play this anyways, the extra monsters aren't needed cause they give you enough from the start or they did in 3, the dice are just extra but just put them in the middle for everybody to get to. Alot of the extra money can be cut out but the extra sculpts can add alot to the game and the other games if you like homebrewing like I do. Terrain can be done with a 3d printer or bought off Etsy later.

    I am yes, just here to hang out with you.
    I'm an Australian, so the shipping element means that any big box games on kickstarter is just largely, a dealbreaker. By the time it arrives, it'll be in retail shops and the lack of shipping makes it cheaper overall.
    That said, I think it's incredibly fair to point out that a company asking for your money to make a big box franchise game is not very good at making big box franchise games despite having had a LOT of attempts to do it.

    Honestly, mostly here to hear your thoughts. It was already a pass for me.
    I enjoy the IP but I'm not a die-hard fan, and don't see this competing with Cthulhu Death May Die for a co-op "horror", and I already have Deep Madness waiting to be played for...far too long.
    Totally agree about SFG as well, though their original IP's (Guild Ball, Godtear) seem to be better received. DMC as well to a point, but that was James Hewitt and he's awesome!

    Thanks Chris. I am not going to pledge for the the game right now as its too expensive for a game of its size especially the components when comparing to other dungeon crawlers which are 2 to 3 times larger than resident evil with the same price of the core pledge in the current campaign.
    I will wait for retail instead if it comes.

    Thank you for a great video! You've convinced me to not back Resident Evil. I was on the fence and some of the reasons you gave connected with me. I now have more money to get more content for TMB. 😃
