Nothing but the best, later for the rest, Ray Charles was the best musician and most exciting and soulful performer in America. Everything he touches turns gold. Check his version of "Georgia" and "America", "Ruby", great reaction.

One of my mom’s favorites. She loved her some Ray Charles, and I heard his music at a very young age . He’s legendary. And the biopic with Jaime Foxx is amazing if you haven’t seen it.

An on the mark groovin' 'n movin' reaction 🎯! What'd I Say was released as the second single from Ray Charles 1959 album: What'd I Say. It was written by Ray Charles. It was produced by Jerry Wexler. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #6 on the Pop chart. This performance is from December 3, 1967 on The Ed Sullivan Show and features Billy Preston on piano. The Raelettes for this performance are: Alexandra Brown, Merry Clayton, Gwen "Squatty Roo" Berry and Clydie King. The song was added to the National Recording Registry in 2002 and appeared in the 2003 and 2021 versions of Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list: at number 10 in 2003 and at number 80 in 2021. In the 1995 film: Tommy Boy, Tommy and his father, Big Tom, perform a duet of the song at Big Tom's wedding.
When Ray Charles recorded this, it was a very long song until engineer Tom Dowd edited it down to 6 1/2 minutes. Ray Charles said he got the idea for this song from "The sweet sounds of love making". The call-and-response style was inspired by church music Ray Charles grew up with. When the preacher said something, the congregation shouted it back. "What'd I Say" stands as the epitome of call-and-response in secular music.
Ray Charles improvised the song onstage at a club in Brownsville, Pennsylvania in December 1958 after he played every song he knew and still had 12 minutes to fill. He simply asked his band to follow his lead... which they did. He told his backing singers (The Raeletts) to simply repeat whatever he said. The singer remembered: "I had sung everything I could think of. So I said to the guys: 'Look, I'm going to start this thing off, I don't know where I'm going, so y'all just follow me.' And I said to the girls, 'Whatever I say, just repeat after me'".
The story goes that at the end, the club-goers gathered at Ray Charles' feet, begging for the tune's title so they could buy the record. Predictably, the song was recorded with all due haste.
In the early '60s, many music acts incorporated the song into their live shows. In 1964, Elvis Presley performed it in the movie: Viva Las Vegas (where is sings it to Ann Margret), that version was released as a single. Here are the charting covers in the US for "What'd I Say":
    1961: #30 Jerry Lee Lewis
    1962: #24 Bobby Darin
    1963: #113 Kenny Burrell & Jimmy Smith
    1964: #21 Elvis Presley
    1972: #61 Rare Earth
Other artists to cover the song include 📻: The Beatles ft Tony Sheridan, Nancy Sinatra, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Sylvie Vartan, The Ravers, Freddie And The Dreamers, The Dee Jays, Sandro, Chet Atkins, Herbie Mann, Dionne Warwick Bunny Sigler, The Shadows, Floyd Cramer, Gene Vincent, Adam Faith, John Leyton, The Delltones, Brenda Lee, Sandy Nelson, The Ventures, Little Tony, The Rivieras, King Curtis, Ray Stevens, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Les Chats Sauvages, Bobby Rydell, The Anita Kerr Singers and more.

    Ray Charles Info 📰:
Ray Charles was born on September 23, 1930 in Albany, Georgia. He passed away on June 10, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California. He was a singer, songwriter, producer and pianist. He won 17 Grammy Awards from his 37 nominations. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in music history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius". Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called "Brother Ray". He had a lifelong friendship and occasional partnership with Quincy Jones. Frank Sinatra called Ray Charles "the only true genius in show business", although Ray Charles downplayed this notion. Billy Joel said, "This may sound like sacrilege, but I think Ray Charles was more important than Elvis Presley".
Ray Charles had multiple singles reach the Top 40 on various Billboard music charts: 44 on the US R&B singles chart, 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart, two on the Hot Country singles charts. His discography is highly complex and extensive. AllMusic has listed approximately 60 original albums and more than 200 compilation albums, while music essayist Robert Christgau noted the existence of more. At least 20 record labels have released near-identical compilations of Ray Charles' pre-Atlantic Records tracks, while many of the masters that Ray Charles began to own after 1960 were not digitally reissued, leading the Atlantic Records sister label Rhino Entertainment to focus on rereleasing his mid-to-late 1950s music. Robert Christgau has called Ray Charles' discography a "monumental mess" and that "any map of his oeuvre must be personal and provisional".
Ray Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence as a youth, but his music was also influenced by Louis Jordan and Charles Brown. Ray Charles was blinded during childhood at the age of 6, possibly due to glaucoma. Ray Charles started playing the piano at the age of three. "I was born with music inside me", he said. "And from the moment I learned there were piano keys to be mashed, I started mashing 'em, trying to make sounds out of feelings".

Ray Charles stated in his 1978 autobiography: "Brother Ray: Ray Charles' Own Story", that he became hooked on women after losing his virginity at 12 years old to a woman about 20. "Cigarettes and smack [heroin] are the two truly addictive habits I've known. You might add women", he said. "My obsession centers on women-did then [when young] and does now. I can't leave them alone", he added.
Ray Charles attended school at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine from 1937 to 1945. He further developed his musical talent at school and was taught to play the classical piano music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. His teacher, Mrs. Lawrence, taught him how to use braille music, a difficult process that requires learning the left hand movements by reading braille with the right hand and learning the right hand movements by reading braille with the left hand, then combining the two parts. His mother, Aretha Robinson, passed away in the spring of 1945, when he was 14. Her death came as a shock to him; he later said the deaths of his brother George (1935 drowning) and mother were "the two great tragedies" of his life. He decided not to return to school after his mother's funeral.
After leaving school, Ray Charles moved to Jacksonville to live with Charles Wayne Powell, who had been friends with his late mother. He played the piano for bands at the Ritz Theatre in LaVilla for over a year, earning $4 a night. In 1947, he moved to Tampa, where he held two jobs, including one as a pianist for Charles Brantley's Honey Dippers. He decided to leave Florida for a large city, and, considering Chicago and New York City too big, followed his friend Gossie McKee to Seattle, Washington, in March 1948, knowing that the biggest radio hits came from northern cities. There he met and befriended, under the tutelage of Robert Blackwell, a 15-year-old Quincy Jones.
With Ray Charles on piano, Gossie McKee on guitar, and Milton Garred on bass, The McSon Trio started playing the 1-5 AM shift at The Rocking Chair. In April 1949, he and his band recorded the song: "Confession Blues", which became his first national hit, soaring to #2 on the R&B chart. The group later became known as The Ray Charles Trio from 1949-53. In addition to being a musician, Ray Charles was also a record producer, producing Guitar Slim's 1954 # 1 R&B hit: "The Things That I Used To Do".
Ray Charles pioneered the Soul music genre during the 1950s by combining Blues, Jazz, Rhythm And Blues, and Gospel styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records after the record label acquired his contract in 1952. He contributed to the integration of Country music, Rhythm And Blues, and Pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music albums, released in 1962. While he was with ABC Records, Ray Charles became one of the first black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.
Ray Charles' 1960 hit song: "Georgia on My Mind" was the first of his three career No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. His 1962 album: Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, became his first album to top the Billboard 200 album chart.
For his musical contributions, Charles received the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, and the Polar Music Prize. He was one of the inaugural inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He has won 17 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. 10 of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone ranked Charles No. 10 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and No. 2 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
      Ray Charles Passing 🙏🏾:
Ray Charles held a family luncheon for his 12 children in 2002, ten of whom attended. He told them he was mortally ill and $500,000 had been placed in trusts for each of the children to be paid out over the next five years. In 2003, Ray Charles had successful hip replacement surgery and was planning to go back on tour, until he began having other ailments.
He passed away at his home in Beverly Hills, California, of complications resulting from liver failure, in 2004, at the age of 73. His funeral took place on June 18, 2004, at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles, with numerous musical figures in attendance. BB King, Glen Campbell, Stevie Wonder and Wynton Marsalis each played a tribute at the funeral. He was laid to rest at in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.

The Raelettes aka The Raelets aka The Raeletts were a feamle singing group formed in 1958 to provide backing vocals for Ray Charles. They were reformed from the group The Cookies. Between 1966 and 1973, The Raelettes recorded on Tangerine Records as a separate act produced and accompanied by Ray Charles. The group always consisted of 4 or 5 singers. The ever-changing group lineup included at times: Minnie Riperton, Marilyn McCoo (5th Dimension), Merry Clayton, Clydie King (The Blackberries), Edna Wright (Honey Cone), and Susaye Greene (The Supremes).
Ray Charles also produced and played piano on solo singles for various Raelettes group members over the years. The group's album compilation: Souled Out, was released in 1970, featuring songs R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner had recorded for Tangerine Records.
In the 1970s, Mable John (the very first female signer signed by Berry Gordy) sang lead vocals and The Raelttes toured independent of Ray Charles. After she left The Raelettes returned to the background for good, with various lineups backing Ray Charles until his passing in 2004.

Nobody but Ray could have done this one. Can you feel it? The late great Mr. Billy Preston on company piano. Rip to both of them.

The recording was far better. "Hit The Road Jack" by Ray Charles. The Rayletts had more lines. It was a great tune. Kids used to go around saying "Hit the road Jack"
