How to get a LIKENESS in a portrait

- In previous videos we have looked at the basics of drawing faces in a life drawing situation. In life drawing, you usually don't need to worry too much about achieving a perfect likeness of the model, but sometimes you want to go further and do a proper portrait.
In this video, we will discuss tips to keep in mind to achieve that likeness and create a drawing that looks just like that person. Mayko demonstrates by drawing a portrait in her own style while also aiming for a likeness.

My teacher told me I'm not bad at portraiture. My biggest issue is the form of the head. I always draw things elongated because of the angles I see on paper. I can't always look straight down the paper in some classes so it confuses me. Standing up doesn't always work either as I'm in a class and some students have to draw the same model and are annoyed seeing the artist move in front of their view too. So to get a better understanding, I still try to attempt looking at the face in different ways, finding the logic on how everything connects.
That's great Olivia, it sounds like you are working hard on your skills. Is it possible to stick the paper to a board and rest it on your knees and on the back of a chair in front of you? This way you don't have to use an easel in a crowded room, but can be looking straight at the paper.
Love Life Drawing the back of a second chair with the seat facing forward works really well when you don’t have a table or drawing horse.
I recommend getting a wooden board to pin your paper to.

A slight foreshortening shadow under the eye to bring out the front cheekbone plane, and that profile would be perfect; even Sargent would be pleased with your correction on the lower lip. Note to myself: the iris is quite shallow when viewed in profile. I love your channel, it's unique in that you talk to our concerns as fellow artists, not neophytes.

When talking about changes to face w the pic of the rock.. I am staring at it trying to understand what ur talking about, what changed.... took me re-watching 3 times and was only able to pick it out bc on the third try the image jumped and I finally seen it.. maybe that's why I struggle with the base...?

No matter what we're drawing if our concern is the likeness we have to build strong communication and coordination between our hand, eyes and brain. To build those fundamentals depends on practice. More practice gives better results and understand each other's functionalities!
What pencil do you use??
Thank you for a great demonstration and feel so much of what you say is true. My own personal view and technique, as explained in my book and live classes, is to concentrate on the Outside Shape. Once this is correct, the features of the face will fall into their correct place, as if by magic.

thanks for posting awesome videos! I have a question, when you're drawing, do you always use overhand/underhand grip except when drawing tiny details?
yes if using that type of material, if drawing on an ipad or something, it'd be all tripod grip
How are caricatures done?
The key in perfecting likeness is to scribble a portrait nonchalantly before setting out to actually doing it. It'll give you a mental map to what needs to be done. Also, take it easy, start with the main outlines then slowly go for details. Or, start with the values, then outlines, then details. Some would do a portrait the other way around, but it all depends on what you're comfortable with. You can be one of those artists who start from the outside and move inward, or those who start with the facial features and then outwards towards the shape of the head. It really depends.
its annoying how poor of a likeness this video produces. the eye is too large, nostils are too deep, the nose us upturning, the lip sizes are reversed, the head is too short, the hands are ogre massive. ETC

The viewing of how his face changed when you edited it got me such a strong revolting gut feeling. I felt almost like outright vomiting and cringing so hard... It's weird. Great demonstration thought.
A have a couple portrait books and they all say if you are doing a portrait for money (off of a picture) and not to improve skill, just to trace the face and do the shading free hand.

Important topic. Well presented. Excellent advice. It gets an enthusiastic A minus. But I notice the person drawing is not following your advice. He concentrates more on details like the hair, rather than the obviously too-high, too-full and too-far-forward mouth. Likeness is REALLY tough, and this is one of the best attempts to tame it. Well-done.

Hi, is there a demand for sketches of random people?Just want to know if people tend to buy any sketch as opposed to say, a picture of their baby. I want to start selling art. That was my first love. I ended up in the hospital industry to make a living and I HATE it.

Good advice but the drawing/likeness of the model isn’t very close.
The Sargent quotation at the top is taken out of context. The full circumstances of the quote is that when Sargent did a portrait commission, he invariably received the comment from the patron that, although they loved the portrait they felt that something about the mouth wasn’t right. It got so frequent, that Sargent came up with the quotation you’ve mentioned.

your choice of making dwayne johnson's features change to show what slight mistakes do is excellent but why didn't you draw him then? You look at your portrait and then show us the rock so it's confusing.
Dude...you were talking about watching closely the entire time. Even in your attempt of likeness the eyes were to big, the shape of the forehead to curvy, the upper lip more extruded, but the chin is really the problem, is like you didn't even try... How come you can talk about keys to achieving likeness but you are way to far off yourself?

I dunno! The eyes are different and the foreheads a bit too slanted like! detracts from the likeness but I like your voice. Foxy draws cartoons is funnier but yours are nicer results.
scratching my head. The drawing has several proportional errors, specially eyes and nose. So.. how does that work? The guy teaching me something, is doing it wrong?

Edit: I actually see a few too. The forehead for example. I still think it’s a good tutorial though.
Olandes Volador The whole point of it isn’t to be exact, he’s an artist not a printer, it’s to be able to recognise the subject. Old masters also exaggerated/changed features which if anything adds more likeness.
I like the video but the girl on the left is not quite the girl on the right.
It seems like he got the proportions pretty much correct, but he made the forehead too sloped. Anyway, it's still a good video. He does try to teach as opposed to doing a sped a video.
