I've got a spicy meatball of a build for you. I'm a 1 mil. mastery tank/survivalist Pyke enjoyer, or as I like to call it: Battledancer Pyke. Although it has less 1v9 carry potential than standard Pyke builds, I find that it is much more consistent, and doesn't fall off late game. Here's my standard build, and the reasoning behind each of the choices:
Runes:
Aftershock - Fairly self-explanatory, we're trying to live forever.
Font of Life - All the options in this slot are kinda bad. This one sometimes keeps idiot ADCs alive a little longer.
Conditioning - You could go any of these. I go for conditioning because we're building resists and don't want to fall off lategame.
Revitalize - We don't have any shields, but this makes our grey health more effective.
Sudden Impact - This build doesn't build a ton of lethality, but it's still a great stat.
Ultimate Hunter - More ults is more gooder.
AD/AD/Tenacity - We're not trying to avoid getting hit as much as shrugging it off when we do, so tenacity is good.
Items:
Celestial Opposition - It's the tank option, we want to survive engaging on the entire enemy team.
Mercury's Treads - This helps us get out when we go in. Can be swapped for armor boots into ad-heavy or cc-light.
Edge of Night - Spell shield lets us body-block for our carries, and makes it hard for the enemy to lock us down.
Death's Dance - Our grey health healing often can match DD's burn, so this basically just increases our max health by 30%.
Spirit Visage - Heal power is super strong on Pyke since we heal so much with our grey health.
Guardian Angel - Living to fight another day is the point of the build, and Pyke is better than most at skating out of danger after reviving.
With this build, you end up playing more like Rakan than an assassin. You have the cc to lock down their back line, and the slipperiness to distract their front line. Early game plays much the same as assassin Pyke; you try to kill them in lane, and roam to get the rest of the map ahead. Late game, you are much less suited to quickly picking off squishies (you can still do it, but it takes longer), but you can go toe-to-toe with toplane bruisers without instantly dying, and you can make insane teamfight engages and walk away at full health.
This one is a genuine emotional rollercoaster. Buckle up, watch the whole thing, and GOOD LUCK!
As a Zilean main.. I see you got the full experience.. Win lane, win objectives, get far ahead and watch as your team whittle away the lead and eventually get caught in places where even 2 lives won't help.. then sitting in fountain the only one alive while the nexus falls. (you only failed at the last step)

I'm not a fan personally. I've been maining Zilean for years now, I've been rank 1 in my region several times, so I believe I speak with enough knowledge and hours played to have an opinion worth listening to.
I love tank Zilean, but having tried this across a few games now (high diamond/master elo), I didn't find it as effective as my own tank build, which usually consists of a Guardian rune page, and I build Locket in to Knights Vow in 90% of games. I don't like Warmogs for one reason only. No ability haste, something I consider to be key on Zilean. I also find that I take too much damage trying to proc grasp in lane to make it worthwhile as well, but I feel like you have to proc it often because if you're not then its not worth taking in the first place. The whole idea behind this build is to have what some people labelled as a "stronger early game" but I tell you now, it doesn't matter what you build. Zilean's early game is weak as hell one way or the other. I still run the normal Aery page with Shurelya's/Imperial Mandate build often enough as well because as far as I am concerned it's the best build. Position correctly and you shouldn't have to worry too much about yourself, so you can focus on the team like you should be.
The benefit of a tank build is that you can make riskier plays because there's less chance of being 1 shot when stepping forward. Depending on the build though, you lose some utility that I personally like taking advantage of.
I'm not a Challenger player, so people can discredit my opinion if they wish, and I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving this build a go, but I've got thousands of hours and games on Zilean, I'm in high diamond/master elo, and for me personally, I just don't like it. I think there is better options.
Also the build is supposed to be: Buy Dorans Ring on your first back for extra health, damage, and mana regen to be more effective in lane. The health from Dorans Ring is also the only extra HP you need for the Warmogs passive to activate, along with the grasp procs and health rune options.
The support item is supposed to be upgraded in to the Solstice Sleigh option, because the heal apparently scales with max health.
Always buy Lucidity boots. Always.

It seems the tech is that you avoid being blow up so you can continue to empower your team. You just look at AP Zilean and he has to ult himself or die.
I've been playing tank zilean for many years. Originally started it top and had lots of fun with it then started taking it support and has been so much fun.

I e been rolling tank zilz max e for ages and it’s hilarious. Get a singed we hec or Lilia on the team and it’s insane. Imagine either on no cd repeats.
Great to see that u actually check it and gave it a try. Zilean is so squishy that in this meta of season 14 he just need some tankiness, in late game u just zooming bomb enemies and revive your teammates, is so disgusting xd
I never could figure out why more people who go tank don't take Warmogs. The sustain allows you to stay out forever and the stats aren't bad.
Warmogs should be the 3rd-5th priority item as a tank. Without resistances bork would just melt you
warmogs problem is pretty simple, it doesnt give "tanking" stats besides health, only sustain -outside combat-, so its pretty limited, and tbh, there are builds that give both sustain and resistances, like drain tank builds after unending despair came out, there were drain tanks build before, but now they're even more feasible...

I have been trying season after season to make support volibear work. This might actually be the season he does. Not to the point of how some of these other picks work. But I've been testing him out and doing the drain tank build that came out recently and its fun.

Hmm. I wonder if you could use Heartsteel with Warmog's for the damage off health. Idk maybe too expensive in rift, and probably better for matchups when you can reliably get procs. Just a thought anyways.
Did you guys know zilean is being played as a tank, and ioki is playing zilean as a tank this game?
I feel you could get a lot of value from just a lich bane with this. You already go for a lot of autos with grasp, and you can proc LB hella easy by just Eing yourself and auto.
What about off-tank Zilean? Rod of Ages, Warmogs, Undying Dispair, Spirit Visage, maybe even add in cosmic drive for more cdr and move speed.

I love playing zilean
Zilean very often feels like a win more champ, where the revives feel great because you're reviving someone already getting way ahead. He can't stop a snowball against you so falling behind feels really bad. He's been like this for a while.
Biggest problem in this game though was a brutal misread on the enemy damage output from Amumu resulting in a build that was basically worthless. Had he been able to take some damage from Hwei (and Smolder's bonus damage) the team might have been able to do something behind him, but he was all armor and just melted. Ahri could do nothing in teamfights vs vastly superior Hwei abilities. Feel like Darius should have done much better into Kayle too. Just not good team comp and then build mistakes compounded it.
Ioki, can you try ingenious hunter eclipse fimberwinter shield spam? Its a bit rough of support where u want 2 items to do anything but it is fun. xPetu did it with shen top and i wanna know what its like for tank engage supps. Or maybe even like jungle rell or idk ivern. I just wanna see shield i love u habibi

1 AP item (Mandate) --> all the good tank stuff = super annoying and hard to kill = even more annoying.
Either that build isn’t good or it was played wrong. It didn’t seem to offer anything besides the slow and stun. No damage, revives were insignificant without ap. Can someone explain how it’s supposed to work?

I hate the build personally and haven't found success on a single game of playing it. The idea is sound but I don't see a lot from it.

So you could be top damage, top cc and keep your allies alive forever, but better you buy warmog, an item that gives you nothing. Useless even in aram with Zilean.
You don’t do damage ever though even with ap, maybe in lane if u max q but that’s about it

Not surprised you lost this, you threw hard like 4 times, took kills and blamed your teammates constantly. Your vision game is very sub-par and your calls were horrible. You also tunnel visioned on Leona and chased her with your adc while your team was fighting elsewhere, missed ultimates and generally had bad game sense.
I am also not a fan of this build, you do not build cdr, and you neglect putting points into W, which means you end the game with a W cooldown of 11 seconds. This really hurts your utility more than you are probably aware of, because you will be unable to chain your spells together properly. Also, tankiness can be achieved with different items too.
An emotional rollercoaster? maybe, but only because I expected you to start playing good.
Also, it is arguably your own fault if you ultimate someone who still has hourglass and flash up.

As zilean you cant really prioritize anyone but Frontline when dropping bombs. Idk man I missed some potential ults but my team was horrific, insane lead toss.
