Hi Tina! Hope you make a video about Idols & Fans interaction----like what do the companies say about idols communicating/interacting with their fans? What protocols do they give to idols during fanmeetings, concerts, music shows, in using their social media accounts, or even just when they're on their private/personal time? Do you think there's a chance that some idols would date a fan? Or like are they open to dating a fan? lol too many questions i'm sorry! i'm just really curious about all these. Much love & support to you, Tina! Thank you so much for doing this series. Highly hiiiighly appreciate this!
Under this matter, I would be interested in how they are oriented to deal with toxic or creepy "fans" (if we can call them that way). There are fans who are noisy or a bit "crazy", but they are fine and can be easily dealt with, because they usually mean no harm, but there are some that might act in very "inconvenient" ways (like trying to touch the idols, stalking them, saying "bad" things or trying to take "improper" photos). How the companies orient the idols about that and what they actively do to prevent that?
The company asking *"oh why dont you trust us?"* about the money statements is annoying. I'm like duh? Of course they had to know! They should and they can! It is not trust issues, it is business! They are all in entertainment but it is still business anyway! Companies taking that personally surely lacks professionalism and transparency. To be honest it is lawful in any country to see your payment slip, the division and all. There is no exception to their industry. Geez! To all the young ones who are aspiring to be idols here: if you could read this, make yourselves familiar on money matters, seriously study accounting and finance. You would surely need it even in any jobs. You should know it, helpful in cases like these :)
@@Doll_Facee not really, but if they assumed that an idol lacks trust for wanting to look at these statements is just so unprofessional on the company's part. They shouldn't be sentimental about it. Business is business.
SM refused to let DBSK see their division of income & expenditures for quite a while. Once they finally did let them see after their most successful year with five members, they were told they were still in debt.
If anyone feels turned off by the K-Pop industry for these things, either find comfort or be twice as angry knowing that American labels are about the same with most of these things - coming from someone who's dealt with it 🙃
contracts in the us are almost the same, one of the things you can do is get a relationship whenever you want or even sign a contract while you're on a relationship, relationships don't really affect us companies
@theos379 You are mainly right on everything except that artists here make the big bucks from their labels. They absolutely do not. They're really earning money from partnerships, commercials, sponsorships, etc. 360 deals and BEP's are just as prominent in American labels as Korean labels.
@Liza Kingg Because people will find anything to put their favorite idols on some sort of pedestal, even if the pedestal is "My idol bias is treated so much worse than your American artist". Love the K-Pop industry but there's a lot of ignorance amongst fandoms.
@Liza Kingg agreed!! and it's sad because there are tons of kpop fans who are not like that but they get this bad reputation as well because of these overdramatic fans
Me too, tbh I’m kinda interesting in auditioning for jyp at some point. There are a lot of downsides to the industry but it doesn’t really discourage me a whole lot because I still really want to do it lol
lying grape Lmao I hope you try becoming an idol and seeing how hard it is and how your little 5 year old dream isn’t as bright as you think it’ll be. Good luck buddy.
The contract type that you explained around 11:30 is usually called a Noncompete Clause. And now I understand why some artists just stay stagnant for a few years, then pop up out of nowhere with a new album on a new label. I feel bad that they are wasting their talent and years waiting out contracts but like you said a lawsuit is a lot.
I can now see how some of these kids and young adults fall into these contracts. They are no different than a mortgage, minus the out clause of not being required to pay off the remaining debt once you complete the full years of the contract (if that's 100% factual, that is). But these kids and young people are signing into contracts where they do not fully realize the long term consequences, at signing. And the smaller companies who cannot afford to maintain a legitimate calculation of artists's income & spending are without a doubt skimming off the top. I guarantee it cuz that type of setup leaves the door wide open to do so. Which means these artists are working, at times, for free. Btw thank you so much for these videos.
I'm not familiar with Korean contract law, but it seems very similar to U.S. law. In this country, minors cannot sign any type of business contract. Their parents must sign. I recall a number of potential SNSD members whose parents would not sign the SM contract.
@@MrKentaroMotoPI ...ofc minors cannot sign contracts without an adult parent or guardian (in SK). That's pretty much a given. I'm speaking of actually knowing what you're signing. There are numerous of mortgage/loan holders who do not have a clue how complex the terms within can be. They way the kpop contracts are explained in this video is nearly the same as that.
@@NONPOINT420 Signing any non-pro-forma contract, including any contact involving large personal commitment, without legal council, is completely unwise.
@@MrKentaroMotoPI ... and not all adults are wise, even parents and even a person on their 2nd mortgage/loan, especially when people are being cheap (like a buyer who doesn't inspect & appraise an investment). This is what I've seen, from the many examples I've seen in my life.
It makes me so sad to know that some of my favorite artists are put through hell all for the sake of being an idol. They literally manufacture talent. I truly hope artists get more artistic freedom. I know the companies need to get their money back but allowing personality to show would do wonders for I-fans. ❤ Thank you for this amazing video and I love your content.
Well the music, makeup, clothing, MV, Sets, Stuff, dance instructors... everything is important, so the company will need a lot of money, if they want to pay them equaly. Also the money of the company will be invested more in the idols in form of other stuff like housing etc. SNSD for example had a hughe dorm with lots of fancy stuff, while I know from other companys, that the idols didn't even have enough chairs in their dorms for the amount of members living there.....
i don't think this youtuber did proper research. For idols, their main income out of all things they do is from world tour and the biggest amount of money they earn is from there. Sm is takes 3 and artist take 7 while other takes 5 and 5. Also, that 5% of SM is based on gross profit, while others based on net profit.
@NCT is coming for your wigs All things being equal, yes, they receive a higher percentage (SM takes 30% and the artist gets 70%). At another agency, like YG for example, the artist gets 50% and the agency takes 50% for overseas promotions. Of course, not all things are equal. You don't know if one agency is better at promoting overseas than another, so maybe if an agency pays the artist a higher percentage for overseas promotions, they may not try to book as many overseas performances as an agency that pays a smaller percentage.
I want to ask about trainee life. If they're still going to school (jr - high school), are the company paying for the tuition? Or is it included in the 'debt'? Or they pay it by themselves? I've always wondered about this since Art school many idols go cost really a lot (like SOPA).
The company pays for the school or college (tutions) but will be cut from your money later that you will get from promoting songs and all after debuting
If you start doing UA-cam and do what you love but still having sharing money with your company that you earned by yourself doing all the hard work is just 😑😑
I work for one of the big three companies...what you dont understand is how much money it costs to feed and house all these trainees. ..years of dance lessons and schooling!!! These contracts could backfire at you and you won't be able to complain because you signed a contract. So go get a lawyer and inform yourself to know what you are about to do with your life. I myself informed myself and still am before making any choices. I was going to audition online and turn it in. But I decided to inform myself more so I know what things will be like. Good luck to all. I will see if I want to continue after searching a bit more.👍

Sooner or Later SM will build Statues of their groups and Artists and if search how much the every clothes they wearing in every music video its so expensive some of them are customized. But i wish Lee Soo Man be a CEO again cause he is better than the current CEO the cirrent CEO amd the other Directors are SUCKS like a FUCK.
I have a couple of questions 1. if there are say 5 people in a group one has trained for 10 years one 7 years and the others 2 years, obviously they all have a different amount of debt so does the company add all the debt together and you all pay the joint debt together? If not what happens? 2. If one member gets cfs does he/she get the money for themselves or is it split between the group?
Girl she mentioned it... It really depends on the type of contract tou are given some are given completely shared others make individual. Its a really important decision since if one of the members is more popular and gets more activities and has a share. All of the money she makes will be split with the company and the other members... Its a tricky decision
나은AlondraGhoul she didn’t say about distribution between members she said about the divisions between company and the artist. Not how the artist amount is split. And she doesn’t say if all members consolidate their debt.
I know it doesn't really answer your question but I remember Secret talked about how one of their members was making all the money in the beginning through solo activities but that member was nice enough to split their money with the rest of the members. I'm sure it's different for each group but maybe that kind of gives an idea of how it works?
Wow mmmm it really depends on the company usually if you end up signing with the company like debut they might cancel the debt from the training and then start as a group all together or some might do it separately even upon contracting
soobeanie_ oh ok thanks that makes sense. Sorry to ask this and you don’t have to answer did you ever make any money that you actually received whilst you was an idol?
Yeah they kinda do you live in the dorms if your parents are not supporting you with that kind off money so they pay for food dorms school etc and it is included in debt
if you're from a bigger company i think there's a high chance that they will give you a contract that's translated or atleast there's a translator by your side to guide you but for smaller companies i dont think so or maybe some
Hey Tina! I'm just curious on how the company decides to split the payment between members, for example are people in more predominant positions (ie. main vocal vs sub vocal) or who are more popular paid very differently in comparison to others! Very interesting video btw
i believe they do! i read somewhere (and a long time ago) that the main vocal of this certain group (i don't even remember which group lol) was also the one doing background vocals and harmonies and stuff on their album, so he received more than the other members in that division. and vice versa i think the dancers will get more too if he helped with choreography and stuff.
all the same. obviously if you're a main vocalist or dancer, you will get more outside opportunities than other members. or if you have a great personality and some variety show wants you to host or be on it, then you get more work , thus more $, but promotions as a group, all members get the same. now if you wrote the song, etc. you get a bit more. you don't get more $ just because you're the main vocalist when it comes to group activities together.
Back in Generation 2 of Kpop. Sm had a thirteen year contract with couple of their artists at the time. Yoona and Yuri had the ten year contracts with SM. I remember all five members of DBSK had the thirteen year contract.
10:42 this sounds like this is what could have happened to Pristin... Pledis hadn’t promoted them for over a year so discussions came up and majority of the girls decided to terminate their contract
Omg sm is literally scooping all the money, imagine how much each member of NCT gets, I feel so bad for them they all works so hard all the sm artists.
It's alright. Nct have units. They're money os probably split between units. Only when they promote as ALL members they will have to split between all members.
I learned just one new thing from this, Idols can’t do private broadcasts after they signed. Ok this explained why Sakura from Izone haven’t update her channel here since she debuted. She got about exactly 200k subscribers before debut, right after debut, the number increased dramatically, now sitting at 353k subscribers, but I guess she can no longer make gaming video for us :(. She was with hkt48, they let her did it but not Korean management company lol.
Even if she wasn't prohibited to do it I doubt she would find the time for UA-cam, with promotions on both South Korea and Japan, she's is very busy right now
Now I wanna know for Blockberry Creative. I hope LOONA girls are okay. Their debut cost a lot too. Its too worrisome. I hope more people support them and buy their music so they pay off their debt.
At the end of the day it is the idol/K-pop "industry" for a reason. It's a business. And just like other businesses people wanna make money and sometimes the means of doing so really suck. Hopefully everybody keeps that in mind and pushes for better standards all around, especially for the young folks (older ones too, but especially the younger ones) who might be too starry-eyed to see the corporate world more for what it is. Neat insider. Kinda curious about some of the finer details, but I understand those can be protected by NDAs or might be more complex than you or somebody else feels comfortable navigating.
So like if you were to audition for a company and you want to get payed better, more fairly, and just overall better in necessities, promotion, salary, benefits, would make you more famous / or kinda like an icon, fair treatment ( better than other companies ), and isn’t too strict and would let you meet other idols in the comp. which company would be the best match for you?
I have a question! If you’re from another country and you have to go to Korea by yourself and you don’t know anyone, does the company picks you up at the airport and gives you a place since the moment you come in? I always had that q I hope you can answer it!🙂☺️
Snsd's tiffany mentioned that when she came to Korea, Taeyeon's family was kind enough to take her in during their trainee days, so I guess you have to find a place on your own until you debut when they give you a dorm, plus lots of idols have revealed having to take 2-4 hours to get to seoul from home, just for practice. So I doubt they provide a place for them.
Wow this was really good! Thanks for taking the time to record this! Now that your contract is finally up, are you planning on auditioning for other companies or promoting independent? Also we’re the terms of you and Coco’s contracts different, where she was able to leave and then join another label?

I remember around 2010 so many article talked about 3 members of TVXQ (JYJ) wanted tor terminate the contract with SM because of the slave contract, and its too long contract.. then some artist company were investigated.. after that they had to cut the contract (probably only 7 years maximum).. sadly, JYJ who fights for the right but they were banned until now from tv music program.
1 Question. I really wanna be a kpop idol but i do videos sometimes. What if the person who is auditioning already has a youtube channel before signing a contract or whatsoever. Will they delete the channel or just figure out how the channel earns?
Really interesting stuff. I was under the impression that Chrome Ent only gave Crayon Pop a small allowance until their break even point, then they split 50-50 after that. Seems like I remember one of the girls implying that it took a couple of years for them to pay back the company. 'Bar Bar Bar' was their big hit, but still it took time for the company to get back the money they had invested in training them. They would never discuss this directly with the public, of course. But, at one point, they were happy they were finally making some money and didn't have to beg the company for handouts anymore. The girls did a lot of extra work ... they didn't just sing and dance. They worked the office; they designed their own costumes; they were very involved in the day to day running of the company. Chrome was small and didn't have a lot of cash. Also, as is well known, when the group had major problems getting attention, they went out on the street and performed for free.
soobeanie_ No problem. I just always wanted to know about the KPop 'lifestyle'...from someone who actually knows. So thank you for making this series! 🙇♀️🙇👍
At this point I feel guilty. It’s almost like WE are making them suffer. Like, look at concerts of idols dancing and all the fans just screaming like crazy not knowing how hurt and tired the idols might be.
Man... That contract that states you can't do entertainment/work for another entertainment company after termination... Is that even legal? That's soooo unfair! How are you supposed to earn money and live if entertainment is what you've done most of your life and your training didn't allow you to get a degree? Some companies are like parasites.
A breakeven point with these rates are crazy. Even my old company, even if they invest in me (like partially pay for my mba), do not ask me to pay it back unless I leave the company right away. Meanwhile SM, on top of it, they take up to 95% of the take?
i don't think this youtuber did proper research. For idols, their main income out of all things they do is from world tour and the biggest amount of money they earn is from there. @Rhap Sody and again, i don't know where did you get info that exo even has debt when there is freaking member who just spends 20000 dollars just for halloween costume
I actually thinking for audition in SM and it will be held in the november or december. But I watch a lot of the trainee video and what happen to them. It makes me scare, for what would happen if I get in. :( But idk. Anyway, F(x) doesn't even comeback for long, why they still going? I'm sad for them.
10:35 In the U.S., this is called an "idle clause". The contract prohibits the artist from income activities outside the company, but also requires that the company provide the artist with work. This doesn't necessarily mean comebacks. The f(x) members are being given work. It might not be what they want to do, and we may never see any of them performing again. As we say in Hollywood 🎥, "that's show business".
I'm just curious, do companies force you to do diets? and if you don't reach the "ideal weight" can they remove you from the company? Also, do companies force you to have a plastic surgery?(if they think you don't look pretty) or do you actually have a choice and say no? Last quetion, if you don't live in korea and you become a trainee do the company give you a place to stay or do you have to take care of that by yourself? Anyways Thank you for the informative video~ God bless💜
1. Well they'll just never make you debut 2. It depends if it's really necessary. Somethings like acne can be treated. 3. They give you a dorm only if you debut. And you have to win a lot of money if you want to have an average quality dorm.
big companies would give you dorms when you become a trainee. otherwise foreign idols like twice momo, mina, sana or blackpink's lisa would talk about that(?)
then where did the foreign idols live when they were training and had no income? they do live in dorms with a manager with them ive heard that a lot before

Yes, hoping she will do this.
On the outside, K-pop looks really amazing and fun... But on the inside, it's really hard!!! I respect idols hey...
Does that mean the business is one fraud ? Since the trainees do have rights to see where their money is going.
@@Doll_Facee not really, but if they assumed that an idol lacks trust for wanting to look at these statements is just so unprofessional on the company's part. They shouldn't be sentimental about it. Business is business.
this was the B.A.P situation until it was too late.
SM refused to let DBSK see their division of income & expenditures for quite a while. Once they finally did let them see after their most successful year with five members, they were told they were still in debt.
Thanks 💜💜💜😙
If anyone feels turned off by the K-Pop industry for these things, either find comfort or be twice as angry knowing that American labels are about the same with most of these things - coming from someone who's dealt with it 🙃
contracts in the us are almost the same, one of the things you can do is get a relationship whenever you want or even sign a contract while you're on a relationship, relationships don't really affect us companies
@@antonio.unreal Very true, US companies actually encourage dating so they can create publicity stunts out of relationships.
@Liza Kingg agreed!! and it's sad because there are tons of kpop fans who are not like that but they get this bad reputation as well because of these overdramatic fans
despite all of this, im still very interested in becoming an idol.

Yg is better than SM like SM would mostly get 95% and give the idols 5% well yg is giving 70 % and takeing 30%

@@areyoukirringmeirriyaa true point

@@aznmvw 👏👏
damnnn SM r rich, my poor babies Red Velvet, they're working so hard, my babies 😭😭
Don't forget exo🤧

Thank you for this amazing video and I love your content.
Hrm there should be a direct debit per a month thing. Done.....
I want to fight sm T T
My favourite artists are from there. 95 to 5 is just hilarious. Company should treat them better.
I have no designs of being an idol, but I still find your videos interesting... I love them
i can't believe sm takes 95% wtf, honestly yg and jyp are the best companies
Yeah, but they only take 30% on overseas promotions, so if the group does a lot of overseas concerts, it's better for the artists.
Ron Gee so does SM take 70% for overseas promotion or is that just in general?
I want to ask about trainee life. If they're still going to school (jr - high school), are the company paying for the tuition? Or is it included in the 'debt'? Or they pay it by themselves? I've always wondered about this since Art school many idols go cost really a lot (like SOPA).
Jona J Same thoughts
The company pays for the school or college (tutions) but will be cut from your money later that you will get from promoting songs and all after debuting
It gets included to debt, however some trainees w/ parents that earn good amount of money pay for their school fees themselves

I work for one of the big three companies...what you dont understand is how much money it costs to feed and house all these trainees. ..years of dance lessons and schooling!!! Also,,if the group doesn't hit it big,,we eat all that promotion money...it goes two ways people. ...oh,,plus paying for the venue and flight to concerts...things dont just pay for themselves people

First of all, CHILL! Second of all, yes it's a business but that doesn't give you the right to slave people so that you can earn from them. If they managed to debut you make a lot of money off them anyway so you could at least act with more respect. Besides, the way you write makes me think that you're just a troll anyway. This is why I like to inform myself very well before making a decision. It's a life career we are talking about. I will see if I want to continue after searching a bit more.👍
Did u make ur decision
I saw Red Velvet i click😂. People complaining about how SM Divide the money look 95% to company and 5% to artist that's why EXO build the New SM Ent. Company. BoA build the old one. And SM has a Coex Building while other Ent. hasn't it still benefit to company,to artist and to all employees.
I have a couple of questions
1. if there are say 5 people in a group one has trained for 10 years one 7 years and the others 2 years, obviously they all have a different amount of debt so does the company add all the debt together and you all pay the joint debt together?
Sorry to ask this and you don’t have to answer did you ever make any money that you actually received whilst you was an idol?

if you're from a bigger company i think there's a high chance that they will give you a contract that's translated or atleast there's a translator by your side to guide you but for smaller companies i dont think so or maybe some
You're so beautiful! And also thank you for sharing your experience!
WoW idols have to be so mentally strong!! Another really great video 😚
YAY!!! I was looking forward to a new Episode of idol insider hehe❤️✨ thank you for sharing!!!!
No problemo~ 😉

Back in Generation 2 of Kpop. Sm had a thirteen year contract with couple of their artists at the time. Yoona and Yuri had the ten year contracts with SM. I remember all five members of DBSK had the thirteen year contract.
So yg has 5 year contract then next year bp will be renewing contracts already but theyll just release their debut album in their 4th year
10:42 this sounds like this is what could have happened to Pristin...
Only when they promote as ALL members they will have to split between all members.
cannot wait for this series talking about kpop artist overall income!

I have a question! If you’re from another country and you have to go to Korea by yourself and you don’t know anyone, does the company picks you up at the airport and gives you a place since the moment you come in? I always had that q I hope you can answer it!🙂☺️
It depends on the company but most I would say they would want you to find it yourself.

I just want to know if they have contracts in English for those signing who don't know Korean

I actually thinking for audition in SM and it will be held in the november or december. But I watch a lot of the trainee video and what happen to them. It makes me scare, for what would happen if I get in. :( But idk. Anyway, F(x) doesn't even comeback for long, why they still going? I'm sad for them.
Well good luck anyway 🤗🤗🤗
10:35 In the U.S., this is called an "idle clause". The contract prohibits the artist from income activities outside the company, but also requires that the company provide the artist with work. This doesn't necessarily mean comebacks. The f(x) members are being given work. It might not be what they want to do, and we may never see any of them performing again. As we say in Hollywood 🎥, "that's show business".
She's such a sweetheart
I'm just curious, do companies force you to do diets? and if you don't reach the "ideal weight" can they remove you from the company?
Also, do companies force you to have a plastic surgery?(if they think you don't look pretty) or do you actually have a choice and say no?
Last quetion, if you don't live in korea and you become a trainee do the company give you a place to stay or do you have to take care of that by yourself?
Anyways Thank you for the informative video~

1. Well they'll just never make you debut
2. It depends if it's really necessary. Somethings like acne can be treated.
3. They give you a dorm only if you debut. And you have to win a lot of money if you want to have an average quality dorm.
