It feels like a stroke of genius to have an architect explain a religious object. I love the precise, incisively illustrated description of the difference between an ellipse and an oval.
I don't speak Latin or Italian but I would still watch a video with Manuel narrating in Latin or Italian. Expanding an already impressive rare bilingual UA-cam channel.

I was in Rome last week. The experience I has with my kids ( 15 and 11) and husband was enhanced so much thanks to your videos. Our favoutite sites were the Pantheon and the house of Augustus on the Palatine hill
Another fantastic video, thanks so much! Just got back from a week in Rome - saw Bernini's surprisingly modest tombstone on the floor of the Santa Maria Maggiore church, and I was quite moved. Said a little prayer for him and thanked him for all the lovely architecture he left to the world.
I've been to Bernini's tomb too-it’s definitely humbling to see such a modest resting place for someone who left such a monumental legacy. It’s always a special moment to pay tribute to his incredible contributions to architecture.
28 June 1999 my wife and I stood looking at the Centro Del Colonnato 10:22 . An elder Italian man came up to us and tried to explain the significance of that marker. He gave up as tears welled up in his eyes. It is with your video that I finally understand him, 25 + years later. Thank you and a thank you to that elderly Italian gentleman.
Your content is incredible; a treasure trove to those of us who love history and architecture. Thank you! Please consider doing a video (perhaps two parts) on the contributions of each of St. Peter’s architects: Bernardo Rossellino, Giuliano da Sangallo, Bramante, Raffaello Sanzio, Giovanni Giocondo, Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, Baldassarre Peruzzi, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Domenico Fontana, Giacomo Della Porta, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Pirro Ligorio, Carlo Maderno, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini.
Manuel thank you.. what an extraordinary, beautiful, well thought out video this is.. answering so many of my questions about the magnificent St Peter’s Square and lots of interesting background facts too. Got to love Roma!
Very nice post. Thanks for the very good explanation of the difference between an oval and an ellipse. In 2000, I got the chance to stand at those observation oval points and take in the view of the ordered columns. Impressive. However, after entering the Basilica, I was more than stunned!
Fantastically informative and a real pleasure to see and hear - as always. This, however, is simply one of your best !!! Thank you for all your hard work, knowledge and enthusiasm 💐💐💐
Thank you so much. I learned so many facts new to me that I have never read about or heard about in any other video. Now I want to go back and experience it with my new knowledge and eyes.
@manuelbravo - one reason why Emperor Constantine may have converted was due to the prior conversion of his mother St. Helena. But unfortunately for the Christians, he was actually baptized by Eusebius of Nicomedia, the ex-Christian bishop of Nicomedia, who had embraced the Arian religion, and beginning with his son Constantius, the Arian emperors, who reigned until Valens was succeeded by Theodosius, a Christian, did persecute Christian bishops like St. Athanasius. The difference between Arianism and Christianity is on display in Ravenna, where there survives an Arian baptistry and a Christian baptistry, with differences in iconography which highlight the theological difference. I would love to see a video by you covering Ravenna. ❤
I couldn't wait for the Spanish version, so I already watched it in English 😂. Gracias por la excelente explicación!!! I always wait your videos with much more emotion! 🤯
Merci pour tout ce travail ! En ayant passé de nombreuses heures sur cette place, il y avait encore des détails fascinants dont je n'étais pas au courant :)
One thing the architects building St. Peter's didn't succeed is conveying the truly epic size of the place. Everything is well proportioned, based on squares, circles and golden ratio, because of this it's difficult to get a sense of scale of each pillar and statue.
Piazza di Santa Francesca Romana. The Forum, Arch of Constantine and the Coliseum all surround it. So maybe the Piazza itself is not my favourite in and of itself, but the spot and the treasure around it. Piazza del Popolo by itself is the most beautiful. Particularly from viewing spot at the garden above and to the east of the square. Thank you for the video. Very beautiful.😊
Acabo de descubrir tus maravillosos videos..conozco la mayoría de los lugares que muestras pero me parece maravilloso como los explicas...descubro cosas que no vi en su momento.....así ayer muchas gracias por tus maravillosas explicaciones..
Thanks for your very informative videos! One feedback about the sound design: every time there is no speech, the music volume goes up significantly. This is, in my view, more disturbing than helping, especially in the instances in which the speech pause lasts for a very short time. I would simply keep the music at the same volume throughout the video, since it automatically becomes more present in the instances in which you are silent. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, really interesting and well explained! I have been to Vatican City in September and wish, I could have seen this video beforehand. But still great to learn now more about the square. I have watched your videos about the basilica before my visit, that was very useful.
Love your videos! If you ever go to London i would love to see a video of the British natural history museum and its architecture. Such a lovely building and cathedral to nature💚🌍
I love the square , But the flaw is the straight build out of the church. It blocks the far left and right view of the oval. And Manuel Bravo God blessed you with GREAT hair ! 😉
Bravo, Manuel Bravo! Another successful video. I look forward to the day when you come to England and give us the benefit of your comments on St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Salisbury Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, and the City of Bath. We also have some small country churches as well that I think would be of interest to you.
Oggi molti storici anche atei riconoscono tuttavia che Costantino ebbe un progressivo avvicinamento alla fede cristiana, fino al Battesimo alla fine della vita. In quella occasione non aveva alcun interesse politico, avendo già tutto il potere.
this channel is amazing, thanks. you should make english clips more often. I hate seeing how modern architecture has glorified cheap materials and boxes turning cities into communist ghettos. sad. but your channel brings me joy!
Modern architecture is about giving comfort to the masses There are a few misses but most people today have access to comfortable housing and work places, which wasn't the case then

Great Video, Manuel. I loved everything. I was in Rome recently and wish I had seen your video before going to observe more. Look at my pictures, and tell me what you think. Perhaps we can collaborate on a future project.
I am wondering if you can clarify something I heard about the oval piazza and the columns. I remember someone saying the oval colonnade/columns were designed, by Bernini, to represent "The arms of the church, welcoming the masses." Is this statement true? Thank you for this. I have been to St. Peter's Basilica a few times. I am humbled each and every time I am there.
Interested to know what those two 'L'-shaped buildings at the end of the street, framing the colonnades are. Are they part of the church grounds or residential apartments?
Grande! Sei veramente molto bravo e mi piace il fatto che cerchi di dire i nomi in italiano, a parte Michelangelo, che continui a dire in inglese, non capisco perché
Constantine changed the solemnity of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday to acknowledge Rome's power. Hence why the world worships on Sunday. All roads lead to Rome. Do the research.
Wouldn't other possible reasons for the construction of the "new" St. Peter's Basilica and Square be the fall of Constantinople and loss of the major church Hagia Sophia (converted to a mosque in 1453), as well as the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation? The Church needed to assert its power.
Yes, absolutely-these broader historical and political factors also played significant roles in the decision to construct the new St. Peter's Basilica and Square.
What's your favorite square in Rome?
@@ManuelBravo Capitoline Hill or Piazza Garibaldi south of Vatican, really great panoramic views from there
All of them, I was amused with how beautiful Rome is
Piazza Navona
Piazza mattei
Piazza della Rotonda at evening

Agreed. I hate when people of no faith purposely lie to make everyone else seem like the rest of the world is faithless like them.
