Yeah! The term itself only started becoming used around...2017-2018? And with new communities like this it can take some time to get a good foundation. But its something Im super passionate about!
I am a big fan of you during your idol duo with Charlie! 💕I plan to debut early next year! My image is currently more of a gothic and elegant vibe! I have a couple set lists in mind. And just craving to get started! How do you keep focused and deal with indecisiveness?
Uwa, thank you! I miss Charlie so much~ I feel really nostalgic about that time. c: Ahhh, this is such a good question and something I've really struggled with too. I think my biggest piece of advice is to accept that your tastes and how you want to approach performing may (and very likely will) change and evolve, whether thats songs or styles of outfits, or whatever it may be, so don't worry too much about needing to have a "consistent brand". If this year you want to be an elegant gothic queen and perform dark spooky songs, but next year you want to pivot completely and do a candy themed set - I think that's totally fine. People at the end of the day are drawn to you for your energy and performance and if you're doing what feels fun and inspiring for you in that moment, that will make your performance better. You're going to decide the wrong songs, maybe design a bad outfit but that's how you get closer to figuring out what /will/ work, so just throw your heart into it and keep going. c:
Thank you for the introductory video on "overseas idols." Good info there and in the description box. I have lots of studying to do. Looking forward to future info videos. 👍
Can idol groups do rock music? I feel like I saw an idol on tiktok with goth clothes and vampire themes, she even had a coffin she stepped out of on stage but I can’t find her. Can a rock band be an idol group if they’re doing the stuff idol groups do?
Unfortunately, being a cosplay idol is not something I have experience in! But, to be honest, 'debut' in the western world doesn't mean much as its usually a term used for if you get signed to an agency or a label. So all you really have to do is sign up for opportunities to perform or start making content online!
this is such a weird term. i come from indonesia, we have a strong idol culture with JKT48 and alot of independent/chika idols. we dont classified them as "kaigai idols" or "overseas idols", theyre just idols. yall westerners are the only one using it. might aswell changes the term to western idols. maybe thats why idol culture has a hard time growing in the west, yall create a devide between japanese idols and so called "kaigai idols". its just idols, the fuck is kaigai idols
I truly don't disagree with you at a base level - the issue is that in the west, many idols (particularly idols of color) face an issue where if they try to call themselves just 'idols', they get told theyre not 'real idols' because they dont have management like other countries that have established idol industries in them. Or simply because they are not Asian. So we've had to define ourselves differently. And at the end of the day, idol culture in the west is influenced by our own local culture, so I don't think there's anything wrong with saying 'hey! this is a cool new thing thats developing as a result of mixing subgenres." Its not really 'look how cool and different we are' lmao
Also! If you watch some of my other videos, I do touch on how Asia doesn't separate even jpop and kpop idols even though they are quite different both performance and production wise - its all just idol. But different contexts and groups of people treat classifications a little differently.
@@alexpinku_planet then why even use the terms kaigai idols instead of western idols? chinese idols are kaigai idols, thai idols are kaigai idols, etc and yet this term is monopolize by westerners. when talking about "kaigai idols" its usually exclusively talking about the western idol scene seems pretty western centric to me tbh and yes we do seperate between kpop and jpop idols. what......
@@noir8075 I suggest watching my jpop and kpop genre video! Japanese charts do not differentiate, generally speaking. Of course average person knows there is a difference but there is Kpop oshikatsu culture and what not, the lines have really begun to blur as fans. My videos are meant to discuss the community Im a part of - which is the US idol community and we use this term to signify we are emulating Japanese idol culture specifically. I understand if you or your community do not, but thats okay? We dont aim to center ourselves in the idol community or monopolize any term, we're simply participating. This video exists people ask me what it is we do (and Im currently writing an update script for a new video, even!) Im not sure why you're coming at me in bad faith, but please understand that your perspective isn't the only one, just like mine isnt. I've seen people who live in thailand and indonesia using this term too, and some people don't in those places. It's really up to the individuals on how they want to communicate, because thats what language is. I can only speak for my experience and my own community. "Western" in the U.S. typically means cowboys and horses to the average American, so Im not sure its a perfect solution either.
Very informative video. I just met Berry the Overseas Idol from South California and now I'm looking up to see how I can get into it ✨️
Thats so exciting! I hope my other videos can be useful to you in your journey too. ~ I'm cheering you on :3
Awesome short intro to the term Overseas Idols! I don't know much about it, I only heard of the term about a year ago!
