So you want to be a (Jpop inspired) idol? || IDOLpedia
**As an extra note!** : When I talk about 'you shouldn't have to do things you don't like', there are parts of doing anything that you're not going to like and thats okay and its important to do those things too. More what I mean is, if you hate doing online vocal covers - don't do those! Hahaha. ♥ Focus on the things that bring you joy and chase those tasks. If you want to be a cosplay idol, do that! If you dont want to cover anisong, don't! An audience can always tell when your heart isn't in it.
Its important to not put every moment of your journey on full blast as a 'debuted idol' from the start and have this pressure on you to be a perfect idol 100% of the time, because you're never giving yourself the grace to experiment and grow. I find a lot of people figure out they dont actually want to be an idol (and would rather be a traditional music artist) once they do this AND THATS OKAY! Don't force yourself to do anything that isn't in your heart. Or you find a whole new way to be an idol.... the world really is endless.
Something else I didn't mention: GET INVOLVED !!! Whether its discord, or staffing your local convention, being involved with events and supporting them in this way is a great way to get exposure to the community and support it's growth! Not every step you take has to be about supporting your personal brand (/lh).
I have seen a lot of discussion in the kaigai idol community over the past year especially centering around 'how do I get started?' and the enthusiasm is a great sign for the growth of our community!
So how do you get started? Based on my experience both as a fan and creator myself, here are some of my thoughts on the topic! I think this can apply to really any form of creating and building yourself up as an artist.

this video's informative and i don't really see a lot of jpop idol fans on youtube (as someone who loves heroines idol groups)
I don't either and thats a big part of why I started making these videos! I hope they can be helpful and bring more of us together ~
thank you so much for this video 💗 i recently have gotten into a few idol groups !! tokisen,iLife etc and i was veryyyy confused 😅 im a kpop stan so some of these words were very confusing so thank you for clarifying!! i already am into vtubers so some of this wasn't that confusing for me. it is kinda hard though since i barley know any japanese and the vlogs don't have english subtitles but ill live! once again thank you so much 💗
I'm so happy that my video could help you!! I am sure when you first got into kpop, it was confusing too, so I encourage you to stick with it. And if there's anything specific you're confused on, definitely let me know! Im happy to help and make more videos like this in the future. :)
am i able to become an idol if I'm not 18+?
I think you can participate in any hobby you'd like - but as a person who was publicly active creating content under the age of 18, I wouldn't suggest it. Im really grateful that I waited until I was an adult and had more experience to do live performance. In my opinion, I'd say stay a fan, attend events, be a part of the community for a few years - get to know people! But ultimately, what you do is up to you.
@@alexpinku_planet alright, thanks!!
this is such a weird term. i come from indonesia, we have a strong idol culture with JKT48 and alot of independent/chika idols. we dont classified them as "kaigai idols" or "overseas idols", theyre just idols. yall westerners are the only one using it. might aswell changes the term to western idols. maybe thats why idol culture has a hard time growing in the west, yall create a devide between japanese idols and so called "kaigai idols". its just idols, the fuck is kaigai idols
I truly don't disagree with you at a base level - the issue is that in the west, many idols (particularly idols of color) face an issue where if they try to call themselves just 'idols', they get told theyre not 'real idols' because they dont have management like other countries that have established idol industries in them. Or simply because they are not Asian. So we've had to define ourselves differently. And at the end of the day, idol culture in the west is influenced by our own local culture, so I don't think there's anything wrong with saying 'hey! this is a cool new thing thats developing as a result of mixing subgenres." Its not really 'look how cool and different we are' lmao
Also! If you watch some of my other videos, I do touch on how Asia doesn't separate even jpop and kpop idols even though they are quite different both performance and production wise - its all just idol. But different contexts and groups of people treat classifications a little differently.
@@alexpinku_planet then why even use the terms kaigai idols instead of western idols? chinese idols are kaigai idols, thai idols are kaigai idols, etc and yet this term is monopolize by westerners. when talking about "kaigai idols" its usually exclusively talking about the western idol scene seems pretty western centric to me tbh and yes we do seperate between kpop and jpop idols. what......
@@noir8075 I suggest watching my jpop and kpop genre video! Japanese charts do not differentiate, generally speaking. Of course average person knows there is a difference but there is Kpop oshikatsu culture and what not, the lines have really begun to blur as fans. My videos are meant to discuss the community Im a part of - which is the US idol community and we use this term to signify we are emulating Japanese idol culture specifically. I understand if you or your community do not, but thats okay? We dont aim to center ourselves in the idol community or monopolize any term, we're simply participating. This video exists people ask me what it is we do (and Im currently writing an update script for a new video, even!) Im not sure why you're coming at me in bad faith, but please understand that your perspective isn't the only one, just like mine isnt. I've seen people who live in thailand and indonesia using this term too, and some people don't in those places. It's really up to the individuals on how they want to communicate, because thats what language is. I can only speak for my experience and my own community. "Western" in the U.S. typically means cowboys and horses to the average American, so Im not sure its a perfect solution either.
@@noir8075 Does something about Americans using the term 'kaigai' specifically bother you? Im genuinely curious and want to hear your experience.
im watching this ahead of seeing babymetal, thank you so much!
I am a big fan of you during your idol duo with Charlie! 💕I plan to debut early next year! My image is currently more of a gothic and elegant vibe! I have a couple set lists in mind. And just craving to get started! How do you keep focused and deal with indecisiveness?
Uwa, thank you! I miss Charlie so much~ I feel really nostalgic about that time. c: Ahhh, this is such a good question and something I've really struggled with too. I think my biggest piece of advice is to accept that your tastes and how you want to approach performing may (and very likely will) change and evolve, whether thats songs or styles of outfits, or whatever it may be, so don't worry too much about needing to have a "consistent brand". If this year you want to be an elegant gothic queen and perform dark spooky songs, but next year you want to pivot completely and do a candy themed set - I think that's totally fine. People at the end of the day are drawn to you for your energy and performance and if you're doing what feels fun and inspiring for you in that moment, that will make your performance better. You're going to decide the wrong songs, maybe design a bad outfit but that's how you get closer to figuring out what /will/ work, so just throw your heart into it and keep going. c:
I've been into Vtubers for quite some time and got more interested in other idol types recently.. but It's good to know that the terms are pretty much the same. It's easier that way.. T-T
It does make it easier to hop from one side to the next hehehe~
Very informative video. I just met Berry the Overseas Idol from South California and now I'm looking up to see how I can get into it ✨️
Thats so exciting! I hope my other videos can be useful to you in your journey too. ~ I'm cheering you on :3
I hope to debut in december or november, and I'd like to make original music like all of the idols I look up to I just have no idea how idols get their background music and so on :< I'll probably have to create it all on my own so its very difficult 😞 Regardless, I wanted to ask- when I do get started on my idol journey, what are some of the best ways to build an audience? And should I wait to make an original song after building a following or should I have it at the get-go (considering either way I intend to have some original stuff)
I have a video titled "how I made music" as well that you may find helpful! But the tl;dr is joining idol discords (like the International Idol Network), seeing who produced other people's music as well as looking through commissions on places like VGen are great places to start! I'll be very honest with you, I've created videos and content online for over 10 years now and my audience and ebbed and flowed a lot in that time. I personally think that pursuing your music without worrying too much about having an audience will make your work much less stressful and more authentic. To me, the best way to build a dedicated audience is to attend irl events whenever possible! That's where real community happens imo! Anime conventions, stand alone events, etc! Otherwise, its consistent posting, streaming, interacting with others content, etc! I do find that most people are drawn to Original content, so having that will definitely help people figure out if what you're pursing is up their alley but its never too early to start dipping your toes into creating and seeing how you feel. I will say, dont be afraid to really take your time to learn about the community, figure out how things are done and where you'd like to go before 'debuting'. There is no time clock on being an idol and you dont have to rush into it!
@@alexpinku_planet thank you so much! Sorry for the late reply
0:42 - 1:03 perfect time for the Mix
Will you be back this year?
This video is amazing. I wanted to become a fan of jpop for a long time, this helped me a lot. (I was always confused with the terms etc)
If you have any other terms that you have questions on, let me know!
@@alexpinku_planet thank youuu "<3
i just tried this for the first time and it made me so tired hhgfjgsdjf,, i'm gonna keep practising though!! thank you for the great routine!
Hi, thanks for your helpful video! Are you familiar with concept cafes in Japan? Like maid cafes, there are also cafes/bars with girls who do idol performances. Would they be considered chika idols? if they’re aiming to be scouted, then i guess so, but what about girls who only perform in that cafe without the intention of being part of a group one day?
I am familiar with them as a concept! Although, I don't know the inner workings of that world quite as much. 'Chika' just translates to 'underground' and generally speaking it refers to a tier of idols that are lessor known and typically means the idol or group are not signed to a major agency. There's, as far as I know, no cut and dry cut off or definition to it or requirement of what the idol's goals are. To me, that would still qualify as chika!
Tysm for this also new subscribers
Thank you for making this video, and please continue to keep making them!!!! I've been a Vtuber for 3 or so years now, and I've been trying to make the jump to real life performances; your videos help me so much Y-Y💖💖 THANK YOUUUU
I am so so glad you find them helpful! ; u; It's honestly encouraging to hear that. I'll be cheering for you!
I’ve been quietly following kaigai idols (and lots of other types) for a really long time now! Every time I see a performance live, it always inspires me, but I always end up thinking that I could never do it. I’ve been practicing on my own for even longer, and I think you and your words have properly inspired me, not just at a surface level. I’ve been a fan of your music for a while, and I really really enjoy it!! I love how you allow yourself to change and how passionate you are. I want to have your level of motivation one day. Tldr cause I get a bit long winded; Thank you!!! Thanks to this video, I’ll start putting myself out there more!
I really relate to the feeling you're describing, it's how I felt before I started. I remember applying for my first event and saying "I'm not really an idol, but I'd like to be a part of this if I can." And it all changed from there! While I do have a lot of passion, the truth is I struggle quite a lot with motivation, myself. Even this video took me months to finish! I say that just to say that you're not alone and that you can start creating while it's still hard, because I think it always will be. So we might as well start now. :) That's my point of view. Also!! I'm so so happy you like my music! ;; It's a really scary thing, putting yourself out there. But its a reminder that no experience is unique, and if I like something, there's always going to be someone else who does too. c: Thank you for taking the time to share yourself with me!
"I'm just a guy making content" sounds exactly like what I'm looking to achieve. I appreciate the timing of this!
Thanks for posting this! Honestly reminds me of how my content has evolved over the years too. Despite mainly coming in from 2D idols that mostly have very idealistic views, I'm always willing to learn and I have discovered so many great new irl groups through overseas idols and got to broaden my horizons! I think it was definitely NWIF 2022 though that really shaped me into what I wanted to be...the idol fan turned producer aiming to establish a happy and uplifting idol community with all my support!
this video should just be titled "genuinely good life advice"
♥ Ahh, I'm glad it can be applicable to a lot of different things ~
amazing video as always! will definitely be taking notes as i continue my idol journey 🙏
I'm cheering you on!!! ((with a tropical drink in hand~))
Thank you for posting this. 😊 I love how this resonates with all kinds of creators, not just in the idol community. I'm two months out from leaving the software engineering industry and starting a band, and I related to a lot of this. I struggle with being a perfectionist and definitely have had debuting on the mind (for multiple things), but I've had more of a need for promoting and recruiting for my band that has pushed my "band in the making" to have to get out there. And it wasn't perfect but just performing at a karaoke night with me on vocals, my friend on guitar, and a backing track felt reassuring and fun even though it was "not the right way". But the karaoke lady talked about how people could say they were there to see the start of the band, and I hadn't considered that. That made the performance feel even more special as like "the early days" of the band. I started off getting involved in the Youtaite (UA-cam covers of Japanese songs, etc.) community having listened to a ton of J-Pop and just wanting to share that with people. So, I had plans like my Youtaite friends to make lots of covers (and maybe eventually perform live as an idol), but I would get so stressed out thinking about which song to do next and trying to do all the mixing, video-editing, etc. perfectly that I hardly made any covers. A couple years ago some of my friends started a cover band, and I started going to more and more of their shows and kind of became a roady for them. One of my friends said I could sing a song with them, but I didn't know their repertoire and I still wanted to sing Japanese songs. It was fun watching them perform, but I was envious and started really wanting to perform with them. So I eventually worked up the courage to tell my friend I'd like to sing a Japanese song with them, and they were all on board. It was a bit bumpy at the start, but I eventually went to one of their rehearsals and then I sang that song with them at a bunch of shows (and even recorded it). There were even plans to try to work up a whole Japanese set before they unfortunately disbanded. So, I decided that I really want to do more performance like that and want to try to finish some of the original songs I've started working on. And the organic nature of a band throws away so much of that "need for perfection" that was stressing me out so much. It actually feels "too easy" to go up with a band and sing songs I want to instead of going through the whole process of making a cover video "the right way". Things are kind of crazy and up in the air (it's weird to try to start a band without members 😅), but it has been so great having my amazingly talented friend from that cover band on board. And since we already knew a cover from that other band we just had to dust it off a little to perform at karaoke night. So, the main things that I have to keep coming back to are "find others who will support you" and "not everything has to be a massive struggle". I still question what the heck I'm doing (cuz it feels "wrong"), but my friends help support and push me forward. And it's actually more fun when parts of what you're trying to do feel "too easy", so relish in that. You don't need to feel guilty. It either means this thing feels natural for you or you've been putting in the effort and it's paying off. And if you tackle the difficult things in "easier" bits at a time you'll be surprised by what you can achieve. Let's all have fun doing what we love.
Ive re-read this comment a few times and it's really touched me each time. I think music in general feels like this big, untouchable creative outlet. Moreso than other forms of creating, it feels like this thing we have to get right the first time. And every step has to be polished and continuous and clever. I remember someone said to me once "When you create videos, its not just for the person who sees it within the first week of upload. Its for the person who sees it 5 years later too." and that really broke me out of my shell to just keep creating, when I can. These things have value past numbers or titles or whatever we're sort of lead to believe. If I look at some of my favorite artists, they've been in 6 different bands, have 3 concurrent projects and even past 'success' don't know what they're doing. I find it really comforting, actually. Your first or second or third project may not be the one that hits, but as long as you're learning and getting something out of it in the moment - that's truly what matters. Thank you for taking the time to share your story with me. I'll be cheering you on!!
Really good insight. A debut isn’t going to do much if you haven’t already built your skills and presence. Though in Florida we have such a big idol community that a lot of people will watch your debut if you get into a showcase.
I think in this sense, I'm mostly talking about when people hype up an 'online' debut as most showcases won't take debuting performers these days - which makes sense! Its fascinating how much these things change so quickly. I'm sure it'll all feel crazy different in two years, too!
@@alexpinku_planet makes sense! To be clear I wasn’t disagreeing/challenging you. I definitely agree that the focus on a “debut” doesn’t make sense for most indie net idols. You need to start creating art to get noticed. The landscape is really changing though. Especially with a lot of popular vtubers also having an irl persona or being 2.5D like Phoebe. In japan being an idol is seen as a young woman’s first step into the entertainment industry. A lot of idols go on to become actresses and models and talk show hosts. My kamioshi became an idol with the end goal of becoming an actress. So it’s interesting to see that becoming a vtuber is almost becoming a step toward being an idol. And being an idol/odorite/utaite is a step toward becoming a vtuber. The communities feed into each other in a way that I think fans don’t always notice. Especially since the vtubing community is huge and mostly unaware of kaigai idols. I see people deep dive on agency vtubers and find out they were kaigai idols before. I’m always saying that if you want to be in on the ground floor of the next big hololive/Nijisanji/etc vtubing star, you should be attending local idol shows and watching utaite/odorite.
Figuring out what you DONT wanna do is just as important as figuring out what you DO wanna do. Such a good take!
FOR REAL, it's an underrated step, in my opinion.
I really wonder how the idols sing and dance at the same time it’s so impressive
I do it often and I still find myself wondering how they do it! Its quite difficult, but makes for great exercise ~
Otakon 2024!!!
the most important idol song of all time
How do I debut as an idol id love to become a cosplay idol as im already a cosplayer but i do not know how to start
Unfortunately, being a cosplay idol is not something I have experience in! But, to be honest, 'debut' in the western world doesn't mean much as its usually a term used for if you get signed to an agency or a label. So all you really have to do is sign up for opportunities to perform or start making content online!

I really wanted to get into idols but felt too intimidated by the terminology, but it’s actually pretty similar to vtuber terminology, that helped to have some background info, great video!
Im so glad to hear that! It definitely can be intimidating, but you get used to it! A lot vtuber fan culture is directly lifted from Japanese idol culture, so I find theyre quite easy bridges to cross. ^^
