I started mixing since my 13 years, now i have 21 and im learning so many things with you, a great great teacher, thanks for be original and honest, a teacher like the old school...
Many of you cussing this guy obviously can't mix to save ya sorry lives, it would be silly of him to just mix as that will not teach you anything, also not to burst many bubbles but our body, time and the universe has a rhythm so to be taught it very sad, being taught a instrument is different but being taught how to mix tracks you love is sad, many of us are here to see how good a dj tutorial actually pans out :) Listen to him, as long as you got rhythm and know some basic music beat timings then you will be a great Dj. I am a true great DJ and can mix any genres whit eachother and i say this uploader is talking big sense to me!!!
Phenomenal ... I played those songs when they were NEW and on vinyl to boot! I was what can easily be considered an expert beat mixer and every digital DJ should take the time to watch this tutorial you nailed it. Great job!
I mix a lot of these types of tunes, and it's great to gain knowledge on how to effectively mix these challenging tunes. I also often use loop phrasing of vocal parts to guarantee precise timing and then fade in the other track. Can also work nicely. Thanks for the video!
I could really recognize myself when you described a mobile DJ! Thanks for all the advice's and tips that can help me become a better DJ! And Happy New Year! :D
8 years later lol. Hey Jonathon hope you are well! I personally always mixed in the whole Whispers Intro and cut it at "it's a love thang" Back then everyone knew that tune's beginning and were waiting for the singer to get the jam started. Just me, we did what worked for us. Great vid as usual. Take care!
thank you john for the vids! a lot of the stuff you teach I know already, but the catch is that i never had anybody teach me or learned from anybody, i learned it all on my own. really helpful to have somebody explain it in a way that makes so much sense. if i tried teaching people how to do the things you teach, i would just be like, "just do it like this, it just works like that", and that's not very helpful to anybody lol.
13:03 I love that technique. I like to use it when im playing a dubstep tune with a great intro and build up but the drop is too heavy for the vibe of the room so i quickly switch to a hip hop or r&b tune. Thanks for the vid. Great track selection too. George Benson is too cool
The cue can be so bitter sweet! lol Great break down, however I grew up in a skating rink playing wax and these songs, particularly the music you selected, I find to mix, blend, chop etc quite easily together. They all generally have the same beat. What I find difficult is when you get someone who wants a song for example, Garth Brooks, meanwhile your breaking it down with Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force. That takes some creativity! BTW, I'm looking to get one of those LiteConsoles!
I am not knocking against modern DJ's, they have a lot of talent, so please don' t flame me. I just want to give credit to some of those old school DJ's. Thank you for the great videos, please keep posting them.
I like this video based on the fact that you're really helping people by playing down your skills. I know you can beatmix those three tracks so do you :)
I only really mix Uk garage & d&b but youve helped me to understand a question that ive always wanted to know & that is how do Djs who mix stuff like slowjams mix & they most likelydo the things you jut showed. its always goodatching your vids
THANK YOU for making this video !!! ugh ive been mobile djaying for awhile and this is more useful info to help me move forward. so far things are great and people are deffently diggin my tunes and mixes. VMS2/Traktor Kontrol X1/ Laptop with Traktor pro 2
Another great video sir, thanks a bunch! Might I ask you what compilation of old school music you are using? I couldn't tell from the records but they looked kind of similar!
There's a genre called "nu disco/indie dance". You can use that to mix out of old school funk music into house or even just use house as a transition. House music came from the ashes of disco. Then you throw it into progressive house or maybe electro and just have fun with it.
Kuddos man! That kind of music is hard to mix. All of the old music is hard to mix. And I really enjoy seeing that there are more djs that try to not get stuck in the same cuts, same mixes, fades, same orders.... it's just annoying. I'm a mobile dj now, but even when I was a club dj I tried to spice things up! Never get stuck in your same mixes or you will get stuck as a dj. Oh and I know way 2 many djs that do that over and over. Same mistakes for years and don't even try to improve. Djs that actually stop the song to start another one hahaha without even fading. Aaaaand yep, that sht has happened to me, don't edit that mistake makes it real. I have even hit cue on the current playing track xD Cheers from Mexico!
Hi. I'm doing a Halloween party at the end of the month. Do you have any advise on what music to play & some general advice? Thanks for sharing your videos ;-)
I know how to dj to an extent, but this guy is awesome! hard to follow for me cause of how funny he is but it makes it easy to keep the video up! the only time I can really pay attention to anything though, is if I am drawing or making mixes! or learning ableton... sorry for the life story haha vyvanse sucks sometimes
sometimes when I'm mixing I suddenly think of the perfect track to bring in when the other one's quiet, and I bring it in out of the blue. turns out great if you do it right. but instead of completely cutting the other one off, I loop a couple bars and let it play along with the other one with the bass sliced in half (or completely). DJing is fun when you allow it to be fun, instead of a job, or instead of thinking you have to follow certain rules. know the music, and make your own rules.
what kind of mix board is that i have 1 that is old and its bad and i am getting a new one soon but i really am interested in that what is that called?
These are CDJ's from Pioneer. CDJ 2000's, and a DJM2000 mixer. The CDJ's are about 1500 a peice and the same for the mixer. about 4,500.00 of equipment
Another vid from the most prolific poster on UA-cam. ;) lol!!! I do have a question for you though. I am genuinely curious what your preferred style of music is as you post videos mixing the most random styles of music. Another question I have as you have posted videos of all most every conceivable cdj is , in your honest opinion what do YOU consider the best cdj to mix with? Thanks.
Spot on with working weddings etc... they say if you can survive these gigs you can DJ anything!
I started mixing since my 13 years, now i have 21 and im learning so many things with you, a great great teacher, thanks for be original and honest, a teacher like the old school...

This guy knows what he's talking about, all about timing and having an ear for music.
I like when he first makes mistakes at least it makes him human. It's better to watch him recover.
Takes the subject seriously, but never takes himself seriously, its about the love and enjoyment, this guy is a master teacher LoL
yes ive been waiting for this one two as a mobile dj myself i tend to chop things around to thanks for the advice
I mix a lot of these types of tunes, and it's great to gain knowledge on how to effectively mix these challenging tunes. I also often use loop phrasing of vocal parts to guarantee precise timing and then fade in the other track. Can also work nicely. Thanks for the video!
Okay so now I have to watch everything you've ever made. Awesome video, thank you so much.
Props for Incognito man. My dad showed me that group a year ago and damn is it smooth driving music.
Great vid! Glad to hear some Old School in a tutorial for a change, my favorite type of sets to spin, thanks Johnathan!
It´s not only "practice and enjoy" it´s also "listen and learn " ....so helpful ,thanx!!!
I could really recognize myself when you described a mobile DJ! Thanks for all the advice's and tips that can help me become a better DJ!
And Happy New Year! :D
its up to you i find start with my hand by letting it grab the mat also if your ever a little late your there to help it along
Great tips! And it's nice to see that even an experienced DJ might press the Cue button instead of Play :)
Thanks for the vid! I have been mobile dj'ing weddings this way for 20 years. Still learned a lot form your video.
8 years later lol. Hey Jonathon hope you are well! I personally always mixed in the whole Whispers Intro and cut it at "it's a love thang" Back then everyone knew that tune's beginning and were waiting for the singer to get the jam started. Yep. I'll be trying to use these tecniques next new year's party, but with turntables.
This is a part of the old skool stuff I usually play
thank you john for the vids! a lot of the stuff you teach I know already, but the catch is that i never had anybody teach me or learned from anybody, i learned it all on my own. really helpful to have somebody explain it in a way that makes so much sense. if i tried teaching people how to do the things you teach, i would just be like, "just do it like this, it just works like that", and that's not very helpful to anybody lol.
That blend was beast, good sir! It was AWESOME! If I could give you two thumbs up, I would!
You're such a great guy! Thank you for all of your videos, you've helped me a lot.
I love how you break it all down...thanks for making the vid!!!
I Remember watching His Vids In Grade 7 He inspired Me To Be A DJ Kudos Man
Great video couldn't stop laughing myself at the beginning with that wedding line. Good video some great tips.Very helpful stuff cheers man.
Went to a Motown night last week and I heard a lot of this. for old school dance tunes the cut mix or the fade out/fade in seemed to work best.
13:03 I love that technique. I like to use it when im playing a dubstep tune with a great intro and build up but the drop is too heavy for the vibe of the room so i quickly switch to a hip hop or r&b tune. Thanks for the vid. Great track selection too. George Benson is too cool
Nice tutorial! I agree that timing is important. Most of the time you can chop in on every 8th of 16th bar.
i've learnt so much from you man! excellent work as always, thanks heaps :)
As a newer mobile Dj this video is fantastic!!!! Thank yo
I'm learning a lot from you're videos, keep up the good work, can't wait for the next one :D
Thanks for the tips. I like to mix old disco music at home and this video is helpul!
haha i just enjoy watching your videos J, u allways natural brilliant and helpfull, practice n enjoy huh'! ;)
thank you so much Jonathan, watching your videos is both fun and really helpfull. Im really enjoying my practising with your advises :)
I love this guy. He cracks just the most random crap in and its funny XD

I like this video based on the fact that you're really helping people by playing down your skills. I know you can beatmix those three tracks so do you :)
You are to DJaying what Karl Taylor is to Photography. The tutorial style and enthusiasm is incredibly similar! Good stuff.
I only really mix Uk garage & d&b
but youve helped me to understand a question that ive always wanted to know & that is how do Djs who mix stuff like slowjams mix & they most likelydo the things you jut showed.

VMS2/Traktor Kontrol X1/ Laptop with Traktor pro 2
This comes into play with doing hiphop as well. I do a lot of scratch drops that require knowing the timing.

! thank you, plz keep up the good work!
Another great video sir, thanks a bunch! Might I ask you what compilation of old school music you are using? I couldn't tell from the records but they looked kind of similar!
AWESOME tutorial!!
what are good electronic vinyl controllers?
The ones where you use software to load the tracks instead of ACTUAL vinyls ?
There's a genre called "nu disco/indie dance". You can use that to mix out of old school funk music into house or even just use house as a transition. House music came from the ashes of disco. Then you throw it into progressive house or maybe electro and just have fun with it.
Great Humour and Vid J Nice one. :))
I am not asking him for a direct playlist. I was just asking a general question on how to know about different types of songs and playlists.
Great info dude., you wee in my head on that 2nd mix. Thanks a whole lot, appreciate ya man.

Hi. I'm doing a Halloween party at the end of the month. Do you have any advise on what music to play & some general advice? Thanks for sharing your videos ;-)
does anyone know why I am having problems with the Internal audio from USB MP3 and CD is heavily distorted
