It shocks me every time I see someone NOT wearing a helmet snowboarding. I myself wear one 100% of the time. I hit my head very hard a few years ago while learning to snowboard. I slammed my head on ice when I caught an edge while learning my S turns. Im so thankful I was able to walk away with just a concussion...could have been a lot worse. I'm so happy to see you walking away too.

Another thing to note is that alot of helmets are only good for one big crash, even if they don't look like they've been damaged! I've also been saved by a helmet. When I was learning to ride halfpipe I caught an edge at the top and came down straight on my back at the base of the pipe. Cracked my helmet and luckily only a concussion.
I remember my first time snowboarding. I wasn’t wearing a helmet. About 10 mins in, I caught edge and smacked my head soo damn hard. Ruined my day. Literally walked down the bunny hill, went into the resort shop and bought a helmet. Fast forward 8 years and have ALWAYS worn a helmet since day 1!!!
Hey Kevin! I met you in Mammoth back in early November out at Main parking (we traded parking spaces...the guy in the sling with the clavicle bone sticking up who ended up with a grade 3 ac joint separation). Your head hit was pretty hard to watch and I'm really glad you weren't hurt. This video really hit home for me because I used to feel pretty invincible until that day and never wore a helmet. But my small mistake on the park feature that day tore my shoulder apart and racked my head on the morning park ice and cost me a lot (not talking about money), but it also completely changed my mindset about helmets and protective gear. I was truly blessed and protected that my shoulder took most of the wreck and not my skull. I am riding again since January but you bet I've got my helmet on every time. Thanks for making the great vids and hope to see you back in Mammoth and around Socal in the future. That Baker POW is insane!

I was skiing with a buddy, in bounds, and wearing a helmet (Giro Range w Mips). With incredible luck I did not hit my head at all. Instead my ass collided directly with a flat shaped snow covered rock in my landing of a 35ft. drop. All of the ski patrol were amazed I had zero whiplash and zero concussed state from my gnarly crash. They all mentioned to me they respect those who wear helmets more than those who don't as Whistler Blackcomb has hundreds if not more head injuries per year and 90% are due to no helmet wearing riders. Thank you Kevin for making a short but very effective video explaining safety and cool new tech that riders should very aware of when it comes to unexpected danger and the danger we throw ourselves into. I am recovering and will make full recovery expected by 5-6 months of extensive physio. Stay' n ride safe people.

Wise advice! I agree. Luckily I was wearing a helmet (anon brand too) when a rider slammed into me on the slopes. I was on the bunny slopes, teaching someone how to ride. I wasn't moving, simply standing there... when he came in way too fast to stop in time before making impact with me. Before I knew what happened, I found myself on the ground. My head had slammed into the snow very hard and I suffered a concussion. I instantly felt nauseous and had grey/blurry vision. I tried snowboarding again after taking a break for a couple hours but had so much head fog it was impossible to keep riding that day. Best advice ever! If you are snowboarding please wear a helmet. It's an extreme sport and from my experience you can literally die from just standing on the bunny slopes.
I was riding in flat light and hit an unexpected roller that sent me into a rock. Bruised my shoulder and cut up the side of my face but the noggin was fine. Helmets keep you shredding!
Good advice! Here’s another one…1st time getting off a chairlift, I got off too early on the platform and fell too my knees. Chair literally bowls me over and whacks me in the head! So happy my helmet saved me from getting a nasty bump on my head!
Definitely! I had a crash at Park City a few years ago where someone built a small kicker on the other side of a rise. Didn't see it until the last second, hit the brakes too late flipped backwards, hit my head on something, GoPro broke off its mount. I was out for 4 minutes (GoPro got it all) until the ski patrol found me. There was a dent in my helmet in the back. Yes, it would have been much worse had I not had a helmet.

Whats the advice for disposing of it after a crash? I mean at what point is it a hard enough crash that you should get another one other than obvious deformation of the helmet, of course. Thanks again for all the great vids!
For roller derby,we have multi impact helmets, and are advised if you have a fall hard enough to get concussion while wearing it ....time for a new one. You still get concussion whilst wearing helmets....but the technology means the helmet absorbs it.... for a time. Think of them as mostly protection from a skull fracture and a little bit of brain protection.
There's a lot of MIPS helmets now and those can take a few crashes. If you don't have a MIPS helmet, have a good look to see if there's anything that compromises the integrity of the helmet. A crack or dent does that. But if it's still intact, should be good. Check both sides of the helmet for those.
I remember learning to snowboard as a kid and even young adult when helmets weren’t a thing yet in the sport. If you saw even one person on the slopes with a helmet back then it was rare sighting. So many concussions from getting slammed into the ice. Last year I purchased my first helmet as I was getting back into the sport again after a 13 year hiatus. They aren’t perfect but they are much better than nothing. You’ll still get your brain rattled a little if you smack hard ice.
I really live for this. I'm really new to snowboarding, probably went 6x so far and I went really fast on a blue, no helmet because I let my friend borrow it since it was his first day, I didn't fall and was pretty confident. Well, we wanted to do a black and I kept insisting my group that I would wait for my friend to come down the slope so I can wear my helmet for the next run. They were saying well you didn't wipe out and you were getting great speed, they were confident in me going again without a helmet. I waited and got my helmet before we did our second run, it was iced over and really really steep, I hit a dip in the snow(not quite sure what it was, it was really dark out night riding) trying to go for a jump that my friends all did. I slipped out and slammed my head into a stump and one of the branches caught onto my windbreaker and tore it. Honestly, if it wasn't for me waiting for my helmet, I think I could've had a really bad concussion or worse.
I always tell new riders, that $10 rental will save your life! Always wear your helmet! It’s the time you think you won’t need it that you need it the most!
Back when I first started in the 90s nobody wore them. I knocked myself out a few times. I will never not wear one now that I've gotten back into snowboarding.
I think, especially among younger people, not wearing a helmet is largely about being "cool." I mountain bike and snowboard, and you know what's even cooler than looking cool? Getting to ride for a full season. Besides, protective gear helps me to push my skills a little harder without worrying about getting hurt, which has overall made me a better rider. Years ago, I was wearing a helmet for the first time (like, the very first time - brand new helmet.). I stopped on the side of a trail to see if I could spot my buddies and a young kid apparently flew at high, uncontrolled speeds unto my legs from behind. I say "apparently", because I was basically knocked out. It broke my helmet. I came to in the lodge. I ended up fine. But, imagine if I wasn't wearing that helmet for the first time that day. It would have been really bad.
Back in 96 I hit a Tree with my Hip and Head. I woke up hanging upside down in a Treewell. I could hardly move my Hip hurt so much. I managed to grab a branch and got my Board off once I got sitting on another branch. I threw my Board out of the Hole I made and crawled out. I had to use my board as a Toboggan and I made it off the Hill in the Dark. That was my last day Snowboarding for 23 years. I recently took it up again.
Is the helmet still useable? After it slides or crumples isn't the safety or integrity of it compromised? Similar to why you never buy a used motorcycle helmet or baby car seat. You don't know if it's been in a crash.
40 now. Been boarding since I was 15. Roughly 3 times I needed a helmet. And man did I need it. I was either bombing or jumping and I lose it on the backside edge smacking head in true whiplash form. Oh the pain of the a cranium banger😫🤦🏻
Even when riding on groomed runs on a resort you'll never know. I've had a nasty slip hitting the back of my head going super slow but I hit unexpected ice. I was going around a few people parked at the top of a slope when I didn't see a guy come behind me. I made a quick turn but hit ice and the board just slipped away from under my feet and I fell backwards. Even with a helmet it felt bad for a couple of minutes but if I didn't have a helmet I would have been knocked out considering how hard the snow was.
Glad that saved ya! Always wearing a brain bucket. Started without one and all it took was one good fall to realize they are absolutely necessary. I do have a thought for you. But my chest and arm, oh man, does it hurt. I couldn't breathe for few moments. And even now after two days, when I do jumps or have any kind of pressure on chest it hurts.
I hit my head HARD once on some packed snow in New England. I was just lying there dazed under the chairlift and a little kid shouts "Gee Mister... are you dead?" I waved to him, waited a bit to get a bit more with it and then made my way down the mountain straight to the nearest shop and bought a helmet. Haven't ridden without one since.
Fractured my skull riding indoor slope. Fracture was 10cm long. Had bleed and lost hearing in one ear for a while. Full recovery 🕺Had plenty of knocks since (all with helmet on) lucky to be alive.
exactly. Once I fell and right behind me my wife fell because of the ice and i don't how the hell but somehow she caught up to me while we were both spinning on the ground and my snowboard edge crashed into her face but luckily i hit the front side of her helmet and we got away with a cut on the helmet and not her forehead. We still watch that video from time to time and thank the helmet...
I’m kinda scared of people that doesn’t wear a helmet while skiing/snowboarding. No matter how good/noob you are u should always wear a helmet to protect your expensive brain! ❤️
Worth saying that even a cheap helmet is better than none. If you can spend more then great, but I've seen cheap bike helmets take a hit like a boss and save the wearer. The safety standards are there for a reason. They do work.
For anyone not wearing a helmet, watch the documentary The Crash Reel about former pro snowboarder Kevin Pearce and his traumatic brain injury he suffered while snowboarding. Always wear a lid!
I didn't use to wear a helmet then I took a hard hit going down a black and now I'm running a ruroc full face and I have noticed that I do have more confidence knowing I have my helmet on.
Clipped an edge yday at speed and got slammed backwards into the ground cracking my head off the ice, have a bump and a sore neck but would have been much worse without the helmet …everyone should wear one when skiing or snowboarding.
Yup - rode for years without a helm, saw my buddy hit a tree one time (he’s fine) and it scared the heck out of me… been riding with a helm ever since 🪖
Once I botched a jump in the terrain park, caught my back edge and my head whiplashed into the hill; I nearly cracked the helmet in half. It astounds and angers me when I see pros not wearing helmets, especially when they're on terrain similar to what Kevin is on in this video. It's impossible to memorize every square inch of a ski area; wear a helmet and you'll save yourself and possibly your loved ones some grief...
I fell backward doing a frontside boardslide last year, hit the back of my head, and half blacked out. Luckily I was wearing a helmet. Broke my wrist though
Sooner or later you will fall and hit your head. A helmet could be the difference between walking away or ending up in the hospital. Wear it all the time. Plus, it's not just for safety. Where do you put your GoPro? What about stickers showing all the mountains you've been to? It's a vital accessory to the sport.
You have to frame it differently. Is $279 worth your quality of life? We take the ability to walk, talk and being healthy too lightly. A helmet is a cheaper alternative than traumatic brain injury.
Considering the alternative, $279 isn't that expensive. You can also just hunt for sales. Plus if you don't crash then your helmet lasts a long time. If you do crash, then the helmet did its job and it's money well spent.

Two days ago I fell something like this on slope, while gaining speed. There was some hole in my way and I flew and fell on my chest and head. Because I had helmet my head is completely fine.
Im learning to snowboard Mt. Baker !
How would you rate the beginner area/runs compared to your home mountain ?
Easier ? Harder?
Just bonked my head last week slipping off a feature. Glad I was wearing my helmet, and now looking for my replacement
Buying a helmet is definitely cheaper than a trip to an emergency room!
dude fr
Ack! I hope your okay and not too much whiplash!!
Neck was a little stiff afterward.
I literally crashed snowboarding this weekend. I got a minor concussion, but if it wasn’t for my helmet, my head injury would’ve been way worse.
Natty half pipe can get ya sometimes! Love that run though.
I’m kinda scared of people that doesn’t wear a helmet while skiing/snowboarding. No matter how good/noob you are u should always wear a helmet to protect your expensive brain! ❤️
I once went over the bars on my bike and landed directly on top of my head. I was able yo get up and walk away though, thanks to my helmet.
Mine saved my dome in the park last season. The helmet didn't survive, but I did.
Grilo might still be here as well if he was wearing one.
And he had a helmet on. He’d probably be dead if he hadn’t though.
@@christophergruenwald5054 Exactly!
I didn't use to wear a helmet then I took a hard hit going down a black and now I'm running a ruroc full face and I have noticed that I do have more confidence knowing I have my helmet on.
Just saw that some pro riders like Eero Ettala and Alex Stewart starting to wear helmets too. Hopefully this video influences even more people too.
Ended my last season cause of a fall on some icy patches. This season I have a helmet. 🤙🏻
Clipped an edge yday at speed and got slammed backwards into the ground cracking my head off the ice, have a bump and a sore neck but would have been much worse without the helmet …everyone should wear one when skiing or snowboarding.
I typically don't wear helmets on powder days. I wear it most of time especially if it's firm or I'm going to be doing some dumb sh*t
Safety isn’t #1
The choice to wear a helmet or not is paramount.
Happy shredding!
Yup - rode for years without a helm, saw my buddy hit a tree one time (he’s fine) and it scared the heck out of me… been riding with a helm ever since 🪖
Helmet all the way.
Are you junking it now that you took a hit?
Check for a concussion!
Luckily I didn’t have any symptoms!
My helmet save me too!
Once I botched a jump in the terrain park, caught my back edge and my head whiplashed into the hill; I nearly cracked the helmet in half. It astounds and angers me when I see pros not wearing helmets, especially when they're on terrain similar to what Kevin is on in this video. It's impossible to memorize every square inch of a ski area; wear a helmet and you'll save yourself and possibly your loved ones some grief...
helmets must also be replaced if u make a hard fall on them
Ouch, I felt that.
Just got off the slopes and watched this video. Also my last day not wearing a helmet
I fell backward doing a frontside boardslide last year, hit the back of my head, and half blacked out. Luckily I was wearing a helmet. Broke my wrist though
Got concussed after catching a heelside edge. Have rented or worn a helmet ever since.
The first time I ever went snowboarding I saw a snowboarder who wasn't wearing a helmet fall and split their head open.
Toque mafia for life!!
I never ever wear a helmet while riding my bike. However I would never forget my helmet when riding skis or snowboard.
RIDE FUN, RIDE SAFE! ALWAYS GUYS!
Gotta have the brain bucket
No matter how good you are, you will fall and hit your head. It comes with the territory. Even pros fall. Wear a helmet!
Smashed my head on something hard going down a course. The helmet definitely saved me
My family has worn a helmet every signal day on the boards.
Do you have to stop using the helmet now? Its a sweet helmet but paying $279 is a bit steep to toss after one fall.
@@TN-un4er yeah i get it. My helmet isnt cheap either. I was just wondering how many impacts it can take before having to be replaced
Watched skummy in Cvlogs vid go off a jump and land basically right on his head with no helmet…
Oh dang! Was he ok?
@@SnowboardProCamp yeah he ended up being ok but he was out cold for a few seconds after he hit and seemed totally out of it the rest of the vlog…
Helmets should be mandatory equipment in every resort...
The older you get the better these help you. Reflexes get slower and slower with age.
MIPS
I always use one it really does saves my noggin but use the ruroc full face helmet
I was snowboarding with a guy, he doesn't wear protection helmet back and broke a vertebra, I don't understand the point of taking risks
