Well, I took a chance on one of these. Got mine from Puerto Rico as a small plant. I didn’t know a lot about it but mine is growing fast! I have other types of bananas and this one so far has tripled the growth rate so far. Maybe about 15 or so feet in 6 months time. I’m in S.W, Florida. Not planted in full sun but in a shaded area with a lot of other trees. I’ll keep pushing it to grow.
I am in Miami and have had several species of seeded bananas. Hurricane Wilma destroyed my yard and I lost a few of them. Only the finger bananas, burro bananas and saba bananas survived. The biggest plants I had were the Gros Michel which reached a height of 25 feet.
Hi, great video! What kind of rate does this species grow at? I'm guessing it's slower that other bananas, but how long to get as tall as the one in the video and how long until fruit begins to form? Thankyou
Hi Kyle, sorry for the delayed response, apparently two to three years to achieve maturity, which is still pretty fast considering their eventual size!
Dear sir,I humbly request you where exactly in Indonesia, the plant is located or cultivated. Please help me in getting these plants or seeds of this plant.
These bananas are widespread across the mountains of New Guinea. They are wild and not cultivated. We cannot assist you with locating material, perhaps contact a Musaceae society...
@@riz.ki10 Wild bananas have seeds!! Cultivated bananas don't, but if you look carefully at a cultivated banana, you will find small black dots, the remains of seed husks!
It isn't a palm tree, but an herb. A tree has a trunk, but this herb has a pseudostem composed of multiple leaf stalks. Musa are related to grass. Hope this helps.
The island is called New Guinea. West Papua is part of Indonesia, therefore in English it is perfectly correct to say "Indonesian New Guinea", meaning any part of the island of New Guinea that belongs to Indonesia ;)
Thank you for the video 👍 Do you know if this species makes pups? I know that Musa basjoo is one amongst many Musa species that produces pups, forming a nice clump over time. But I have no experience with this species 🧐🤔
Sorry for the late response; we saw no evidence of pups, as most plants were single stemmed and none were senescent in the population at that time. It doesn't rule out the possibility, but the high seed set in the fruit may compensate for this. Perhaps the large size presents physiological difficulties when it comes to pupping...
thank you for this video , incredible , I must absolutely to make a travel to see this , kindly tel me if we can make it grow in a mediterranean climate , is it possible to grow it by micropropagation (tissu culture).
Hello John, if you look carefully you can see that the stem is glaucous (covered with a powdery whitish bloom); this waxy material came off on my hands and was tough to remove. In fact, there is still a persistent streak of it on the top of my backpack despite a thorough wash!
+arobinsonuk A chemical analysis of that substance would be interesting. I know that surface blooms on other plants often offer protection from the elements. ~ I always enjoy your post, thanks.
Does this one also gave bananas only once in their life? I have regular banana and plantain plants in Puerto Rico, after they give fruit we have to cut them, to let the new ones grow. But with this giant specimen it would be very hard to take care of a few plants of these .
The body can make nice materials.. if someone could make it half its size, grow faster and at lower altitude.. can you buy seeds and take it out of the country?
I want one!!! That would be amazing!!! I do not need to eat the fruit. Just have it there for show! I am currently trying to get a MeKong giant banana plant!!! Those get about 40 feet tall.
Wow....I have had a hard enough time with some banana plants that have grown to 14 feet...trust me when you have to cut one up and haul it out in pieces it is Not easy and because they are 90% water even a section weighs a lot....while these are incredible I would Never plant these in my yard, but they are impressive to see.

It really needs cool tropical conditions to survive. For this reason it is not widely cultivated successfully outside of tropical montane areas.
