Carl Lumbly is such an underrated actor. I was pleasantly surprised to see him in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, he deserved an Emmy for his performance as Isaiah Bradley. Great interview, James, Mattie, and Ted!!!
I don't care if anyone says he is old, the DCU deserves Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter. One of the most iconic voices in DC animation. He deserves more respect.
I was lucky enough to be an extra in a TV show Carl did called "Mantis", while I was serving in the Navy in Long Beach, California. This was in 93, so before JL even started. So I've been a fan for a LONG time now.
I hope Carl Lumbly knows that he made Martian Manhunter one of my favorite superheroes of all time, and his work in the DCAU Is one of the most underrated performances in all of Comic book history. He is both a unique character but one of the very few characters to be able to bond with Superman with the pain of being the last of his species. Long live the Martian Manhunter and last son of Mars, and the awesome uncle to Ms Martian who stands aas one of the most underrated heroines who I fell in love with in Young Justice.
Carl Lumbly's voice and demeanor never fail to make me smile. Anytime his face or his voice come through my TV, I can't help but be captivated. The man's amazing.
He is the definitive voice of Martian Manhunter. I haven't seen the full interview so I don't know if this will come up, but not only has he made the role of Martian Manhunter his own. I think he is the reason why Manhunter has been coded or has appeared as black in almost every adaptation since JL/JLU. Much respect to accomplished actor Carl Lumbly 😎.
I don't care if anyone says he is old, the DCU deserves Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter. One of the most iconic voices in DC animation. He deserves more respect.
I got introduced to him when he was the superhero M.A.N.T.I.S on FOX back in the 90s (a lot of folk either forget or don't know) and I used to watch that show with my Dad every Friday night 😊
Marvelous interview with a very, very nice man....and an incredible talent. I'm sorry he doesn't do conventions so people could have a chance to tell him how much he means to them. I'm so glad you guys got him to do this.
Have to assume the conversation about M.A.N.T.I.S. didn't make the cut; very sad. Would have liked to hear his thoughts on his first go at the costume life. :)
My kids have known your voice as Martian Manhunter for their whole lives, so many good memories, so many good lessons taught through animation because of the depth you brought to the role. My son called me up after seeing your role as Isaiah Bradley, and it brought so many of those memories back.
I grew up on all those cartoons cause so amazing as an actor and the fact That he showed up on supergirl To play the martianman hunter's father That's cool and then He's not the only one to go from animated tol ive action in DC R I p kevin conroy!!
Pretty sweet to see J'onn in person! The man has a fantastic performance and such great humanity despite being an alien! Such a great actor and interview! Thank you all.for making this magic happen! ❤
He played the first Black Superhero on tv to have his own show as the Mantis, he played the first Black Captain America in the Falcon and Winter Soldier series, first and foremost he played Martian Manhunter in the Bruce Tim verse!
Let me just say that Carl doesn't look 71 years young! I have followed him since Static Shock. I enjoyed him on my favorite show Alias, and I recognized his voice right away on Justice League. It was such a treat to see him on Falcon and the Winter Soldier!
Great interview. Martian Manhunter is really an awesome and interesting character. Pd: A video about the relationship between the Batman DCAU and the Arkham Videogames would be very interesting. (like the Tim Burton or James Bond) don't forget that both Batman shares the voice of the legend Kevin Conroy RIP.
Great actor and great interview. He really breathed life into Martian Manhunter as a character. So happy to see him make his mark on the Marvel side of things too as Isiah Bradley. Good stuff!
We’ve got a Patreon goal for a “Teen Titans/The Batman: Will It Canon?” video up for when we reach 200 patrons! Go join up and help us out! Link’s in the video description
You got a new subscriber. Amazing interview!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this and loved listening to Mr. Lumbly. Your questions were very thoughtful and did a great job at exploring this iconic actor and writer. Please keep the great content gents!
Your interview with him has been on my to-watch list for the past few weeks, Amber! Plus I have to finish watching the Susan Eisenberg one, which I started last week 8-)
Man this was a great video, im really glad i stumbled upon your channel guys. Maybe in the future you can have other VAs from the DCAU like goerge newburn or phil lamar or even bruce timm himself.
Check our back catalog of interviews linked in the end screen! We've talked with Phil, Susan Eisenberg, Matt Valencia, Julie Nathanson, Will Friedle and more!
have you guys looked into the krypto the super dog show? paul dini had a lot to do with the show from what ive seen for example the episode the dark hound strikes is written by him and when superman appeared it looks extremely similar to his stas look
Amazing video! Its so great to hear the journey Carl went through to become the lovable Martian Manhunter as well as getting the insights of how his career has had him in different positions in both voice and live action. Thank you Watchtower Database
When I think about Carl Lumbly I think M.A.N.T.I.S first as a disabled black man Cagney & Lacey second I love running to the TV seeing a Black person on the show Anansi should have been in the main dc universe a long time ago
You Watchtower People. QUICK! I've got question for you: Did THEY every explained how Superman's classic red and blue suit came to be, what material was it made from, why it doesn't get any damage except when it does. In Golden Age/Siegel canon it was special clothing made from material he himself invented (he was always intellectual, though not to extend of next era) . I do not think there was ever explanation for the design, I think it was just pretty natural for "strong guy in tights" to look like he did, given IRL strongmen of that era, from which Shuster traced some poses even. In Silver Age canon they explained that it was material from Krypton that Kents decided to make into playsuit for Clark (with his help to cut through material with heat vision) because ordinary clothes were always getting destroyed because of his super speed (unlike Golden Age this Clark was extra fast since age toddler) , then into fullblown Superboy uniform which stretched into Superman uniform. It was explained that sun makes it indestructible just like it does for Superman himself. In Byrne canon era suit was made by Kents from normal materials and cape got constantly teared up because it was not protected invisible aura that which has sex with laws of phyisics and allows Superman his super-deeds. But I don't think they ever explained origin and Why in the DCAU. At least not in cartoons. I may be wrong. Also I am interested (but less so) if it was explained in DCAU tie-in comics. Quick! Halp!
hey i am not trying to rush you or pressuring you, but when is the Kevin Conroy tribute coming out? again i am not pressuring you, i am just genuinely curious.
@dcauwatchtower Thanks for your response! I hope my comment didnt come off as pressuring or too demanding. I understand some fans feel entitled for you guys to come out with certain videos and to make em fast, but i dont wanna be one those fans. Kevin touched a lot of our lives, and I understand that you guys want to put a lot of thought and care into the video, which I know takes time. Please take all the time you need. Please do not feel pressured. I only asked because I have seen around other youtube comments that the tribute is a WIP and I got excited, because Kevin is definitely my favorite batman (I think you guys would say the same.)
I noticed the upscaling. Looks like it was the Artemis model? Should have used Gaia or Proteus(and if it was Proteus already, tweak it more) models, if it was Topaz. Off topic but it's my constructive criticism.
Looks like I WAS using Proteus already, though I did basically top out a lot of it because I wanted to get rid of the aliasing on everybody's faces. It definitely has a bit of a "too smooth" look, so experimenting more in the future is on the table, but I do think it looks much better than the original Zoom recording I could've otherwise used.
@@dcauwatchtower Personally I just use Gaia. It does the trick, assuming the source is progressive. If the source is interlaced, I use QTGMC first but that is extremely techy... but if you want to learn that Andrew Swan has some good tutorials. Anyway I'm done nerding about this here. Xp
J'onn J'onzz portrays a good Carl Lumbly in this interview
Bro this guy is legit the only voice I can imagine for Martian Manhunter. Like if I ever read a DC comic with him in it his voice is the one I hear
Carl Lumbly is such an underrated actor. I was pleasantly surprised to see him in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, he deserved an Emmy for his performance as Isaiah Bradley.
Great interview, James, Mattie, and Ted!!!
Yeah because he was born for this role
I don't care if anyone says he is old, the DCU deserves Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter. One of the most iconic voices in DC animation. He deserves more respect.
Saw Carl Lumbly in The Fall of the House of Usher and I thought “his voice sounds so familiar.” Now I know why.
I was lucky enough to be an extra in a TV show Carl did called "Mantis", while I was serving in the Navy in Long Beach, California. This was in 93, so before JL even started. So I've been a fan for a LONG time now.
That’s awesome!
I always call him Mr. Lumbly because damn I respect this man so much. Loved him in Falcon and Winter Soldier

He could make an excellent live action Martian Manhunter.
He played Martian Manhunter's father in the Supergirl series
@@sinfulkivisian20 That's the closest we'll ever get to seeing him play MM, probably.
An incredible person and interview. He has such a love for the work he's a part of. Good to know J'onn meant so much to him and still does 💜
Carl Lumbly's voice and demeanor never fail to make me smile. Anytime his face or his voice come through my TV, I can't help but be captivated. The man's amazing.

The definitive voice of Martian manhunter
Besides Kevin Conroy, one of the most iconic voices of my childhood
I love how Supergirl brought in Carl Lumbly to play David Harewood J’onn’s father. Now that’s treating your legacy actors right.
I don't care if anyone says he is old, the DCU deserves Carl Lumbly as Martian Manhunter. One of the most iconic voices in DC animation. He deserves more respect.
Martian Manhunter has been my favorite JL member since childhood and I've never seen the mans face till now! Loved this!!!
I got introduced to him when he was the superhero M.A.N.T.I.S on FOX back in the 90s (a lot of folk either forget or don't know) and I used to watch that show with my Dad every Friday night 😊
Oh my god, I love this man. Martian Manhunter has far more weight to me now!
He is a legend, it is a honor watch this interview.
Just another reason why J’onn is my favorite superhero.
Any time I’m reading a justice league comic and I’m reading the part of Martian Manhunter, it’s this man’s voice I’m hearing in my head.
That’s good to know thanks Carl Lumbly you will always be the Martian Manhunter as the same Kevin Conroy as Batman who will be missed
What more needs to be said? Carl Lumby is an Veritsble DC Legend as The Cookie Addicted Martian Manhunter.
I associate this voice with Manhunter like I do Conroy for Batman.
I can't believe you all actually got to talk with Carl Lumbly! Great interview btw

Whenever Carl speaks, I feel like I'm hearing the J'onn within. Great interview! Plus I love his sense of humor
Have to assume the conversation about M.A.N.T.I.S. didn't make the cut; very sad. Would have liked to hear his thoughts on his first go at the costume life. :)
We only had a little over an hour of time with him, so we didn’t get to ask everything. MANTIS was on our list if we had more time.
Carl is so cool as Martian Manhunter and also glad he's returning in New World Order
Look at all yall bein nice in the comments! Appreciate all the niceness! Glad you're all enjoying 💜💜
