Through the 1970s employers wanted to see a high school diploma. From then on, the of students graduating high school unable to read, write and do basic arithmetic increased. Today a university degree has taken the place of the high school diploma. The level of education in the universities today isn't much better than a high school education of years past.
He talks about this starting the the 80s, but also in the 80s the legal drink ages changes with the government implying the 18 is not a full adult. I would wounder how much of the infantilization of colleges has to the with the increase in the litigiousness of the US. Ei, college have no choice but to ban drink (or any number of things), because if the don't and one student died the college is sued for millions.
This interview was a pleasure to watch. Good job and good luck. I'm an older than average student (46 yr old wage slave/autodidact) who would really like to have a coupla beers w/ this Kors. Then a coupla tequila shots, and hopefully some bonghits and then maybe some late night grinders. All within reason of course.
Our system of education over-states the value debate to the point that discernment, creativity, and intellect suffers.First understand what you believe, then other possible ideas ,next what other people think, and then finally debate if necessary.
Today the US literacy rate is 99%, though the US has changed it standard from literate to functional literate, though there is not data on how many student where functional literate in the 70s. Really, the idea the school in the 70s where better then school today is simply not true. Even if you only look at 90 to 2009, the average student in US school is taking a full year more in advanced math (algebra 2 or higher) and 6 month more of science.
Please tell your liberal friends that, because every time I try to talk about anything that does not match "modern liberal" ideology. I'm either uneducated, racist, out of touch, or some other insult that has nothing to do with the argument I stated. I can only speak for myself, and I'm sure there are leftists who feel the same, but I'm getting sick and tired of arguing with these types of people.
Very interesting discussion, bit too heavy on the personal story (it is a neat story but get on with the point), but I find the idea of infantilization interesting. Though, my biggest objection is just pointing at colleges. The infantilization of the US is, by no means, just a college phenomenons and the is a big question of is the infantilization of the US an effect of the infantilization of colleges or is the infantilization of colleges an effect of the infantilization of the US?
lol, Usually I'm very articulate with what I'm typing as a counter-argument. But you just sprout uninformed information and it's just a joke that's not really worthy of a rational reply. lol
Professor Kors is rare type of professor indeed- one who can entertain a thought even if he does not agree with it.
Kudos to Reason and Professor Kors
I'm a sophomore in college, still feels like high school classes. If you don't want to take classes that challenge you, you don't have to.

Did anyone else think he said "we wanted students who spent their days in lavatories" ? Nice to see that they welcomed the IBS community!
What happened to the reasonable people of the world. Here is an example of a man who is truly committed to learning, not the imposition of ideology.
Delightful and wonderful man. Great interview!
amazing interview Gillespie, more, seriously I loved this exchange between you two.

I'm not so sure, I'm pretty socially conservative and I found this one of the most interesting and enjoyable long videos from Reason in a long while
This is a fantastic interview. I really enjoyed listening to what Mr. Kors has to say.
Magnificent interview.

Observe: What passes for a Liberal counter-argument.
As of January 2015 this video does not play in the youtube app for IOS. Is youtube doing some speech control of their own?
I'm socially conservative and he is right on. I'm not sure what you're seeing that I'm not.

This guy made me feel so stupid after watching this video. I have so much to learn.
This guy was on Penn and Teller i believe. The college episode.
I knew I saw this guy somewhere, I couldn't think of where though.
This guy is very interesting. His book "The Shadow University" is now in my list of books to read.
9:25 Hayek FTW! That story Dr.Kors told about reading that book was excellent. I am glad he lucked out, having a professor willing to assign it.
why the hell did that end so abruptly lol

I read about Mr. Kors in Bruce Bawer's "The Victim's Revolution" I highly recommend reading Bawer's book.
he's marking off who's naughty or nice.
Yep, he's done some excellent work with F.I.R.E.
Fuckin' A. Freedom of Speech FTW.
