    CORRECTION: At 3:10, Allen Ginsberg's name is spelled incorrectly.
    Growing up, Harvey Silverglate always had a natural inclination toward free speech. As he says, "We really used to say on the streets of Brooklyn 'sticks and stones will break my bones but names can never harm me.'"
    After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1967, Harvey followed his passion for free speech to college campuses, where, as a lawyer, he defended Vietnam war protesters. His experiences defending student expression on campus eventually led him to co-found the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), where he now serves as Chairman of the Board.
    In FIRE's latest video, we sit down with Harvey to discuss why it is so important to defend the principles of free speech and academic freedom on campus. Harvey also tackles such subjects as Harvard's deception when it comes to academic freedom and what label people give him that makes him laugh the most.

    If the left were entirely comprised of "old fashioned liberals", I would proudly associate with them. Instead, now we have closed-minded bigots who think they aren't bigots.

    • @tbiggart1

      And the few of us "old fashioned conservatives" left would be proud to work with them.

      Bigotry Means closed-minded, but that's exactly how you should be when you're actually right. There's nothing wrong with being a bigot unless you're wrong.

    If we had a clone of him at each and every campus in America then our education system would be much better, and the students better protected by the campus censors.

    Great guy. A real liberal, in the old sense of the word, that believes in liberty, and liberty for everybody, not just liberty for people on the left. I love it when he said he started out defending leftists for free speech, and being dismayed when those same leftist took over and became hypocritically more intolerant than the old Harvard conservatives they used to protest against.

    My new favorite liberal. It is funny how the right is closer to classic liberalism than the academic left is.

    • @richard40x
      @richard40x 10 років тому +3

      Yes, that is because the right has been able to work with and respect libertarians, and even incorporate many libertarian ideas, even if many on the right disagree with libertarians on socon issues, while the left respects nobody that does not buy the entire leftist program. The dems congratulate themselves on being the party of tolerance and diversity, but in reality tolerate nothing that does not completely fit their leftist viewpoint.

    • @makinapacal
      @makinapacal 10 років тому +3

      The fact that you define Democrats as "Left" is of course totally "conservative" P.C. Also your comment about the "Left" respecting no one is again P.C. It is so easy to find "conservatives" who rail hysterically against and viciously against so-called "Liberals" and "Leftists". I could mention Fox News whose hysteria and hatred of free speech is clear and obvious.

    • @richard40x
      @richard40x 10 років тому +3

      And of course you would support the academic leftists who try to suppress all this horrible conservative hysterical PC hate speech. I like real liberals, like the guy on this video, who actually believe in liberty. But academia and the dem party don't really have that many real liberals left anymore. They have all turned into leftists, who are just as intolerant as the old conservatives they used to protest against, and only really believe in free speech for other leftists..

    • @makinapacal
      @makinapacal 10 років тому +1

      Your fantasies are amusing. Your assumption that the Democrats are "Leftists" is of course risible P.C. nonsense. As for only believing in free speech for other Leftists. you really like to spout whoppers. Thank you for illustrating my point so clearly.

    • @richard40x
      @richard40x 10 років тому +1

      You haven't really listened to this very video much have you. It supports every point I have just made, and the speaker is a former liberal, who recognizes what a threat the modern leftists who have taken over liberalism and the dems are.

    Thank you, Harvey, for all you've done. Please, if you have money, people reading here, donate it to FIRE, which defends free speech violations on campus pro bono for people who would otherwise not be able to afford a defense.

      @AmyBAlkon 10 років тому +1

      ***** Great. People who can't support theFIRE.org with money might consider supporting them by doing something to spread the word about their work. Tweet, Facebook, etc., about what they do. Tell people on campus.

    • @makinapacal
      @makinapacal 10 років тому

      No doubt you also support campaigns against violations of free speech by "Conservative" and "Fundamentalist" educational institutions where such violations are routine.

    • @AmyBAlkon
      @AmyBAlkon 10 років тому +4

      Pierre Cloutier Oh, snap! Are you a clever lad! (As Harvey points out, one is assumed to be a "right-winger" if they support free speech -- a sad comment on what being liberal has become…or maybe always was, under the surface.) I'm an atheist and a libertarian. I personally encourage free speech and inquiry at all institutions but you seem confused. A private institution is free to do as they wish. What FIRE often protests is that institutions like Harvard, which is private, claims to be a bastion of inquiry and free speech. If you'll read up it, you will see it is not.

    • @AmyBAlkon
      @AmyBAlkon 10 років тому +1

      Amy Alkon Someone below points out that Harvard accepts Federal funding. Institutions that do can't be considered "private."

    • @makinapacal
      @makinapacal 10 років тому +1

      Speaking of assumptions just why do you implicitly assume I am not for free speech? Oh and the statement that if one is in favor of free speech one is assumed to be right wing is politely a huge exaggeration. Your fantasies about "Liberals" are hilarious You seem to fantasize that being a "Liberal" means your against free speech. Hallucinate away.Has for a private institution is free to do what it wishes. Thank you for giving me the answer I knew you would give. But then your answer illustrates in abundance a mind set I have seen over and over again. Oh and all sorts of institutions like "Conservative" "Fundamentalist" schools get public funding one way or the other. Oh and get your psychic powers tested.

    Harvey, I disagree with one of your positions on civil libertarian grounds: Harvard can't proclaim itself a formally leftist institution because it accepts federal funding and is tax-exempt. Ideological institutions should not be funded by the government.

    FIRE was singularly unhelpful to me in my battle against the discredited UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi. I am writing about FIRE and other foundation-funded organizations.

    • @user-yy8mi6cj4b
      @user-yy8mi6cj4b 8 років тому +1

      FIRE might have seen the righting on the wall for her (see below) and would not have gained by involving themselves. Even Help groups and nonprofits have a self interest motive that has to come first if they want to continue to exist and the UC system is a massive opponent in solid footings.
      This is how the UC system punishes wrongdoing at the highest levels.
      "Under a settlement, Katehi will remain on administrative leave for a
      year as chancellor emeritus, receiving her $424,360 annual pay with the
      promise that she will return as a faculty member."

      You are working on a paper/article/book? I wasn't sure from your first comment but am glad to hear it. • @professorhamamoto
      @professorhamamoto 8 років тому

      One of my colleagues pointed to the list of corporate and foundation donors. FIRE works for the "Bad Guys." We know it as "controlled opposition." Spread the word. They hire interns and fresh university graduates to field queries then at weekly meetings the professional intelligence managers cherry pick the cases that will make the org look like it is preserving academic freedom rather than perpetuating structural corruption at the university.
