In this Mad World guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play Mad World by Tears For Fears on acoustic guitar using the Gary Jules version as inspiration for the arrangement.
The guitar is in standard tuning but I placed a capo at the first fret in order to make the intro playable on the guitar as well as make the chord progressions much easier.
I use fingerstyle technique for the intro section. This section is also played during the chorus. It requires some pretty big stretches but sounds really great when you can put it all together. If you are singing while playing this, I have included an alternate way to play that section by just strumming the underlying chords during the chorus if playing the intricate fingerpicked stuff is too difficult while singing.
I then just strum the chords for the verse and pre-chorus using the back of my nails or the thumb.
This arrangement is based off of Gary Jules' amazing cover of this Tears For Fears classic from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. I just love the intimate quality of it.

Hey Carl, I'll just stop to say how much I appreciate your videos
Just came across this. The long stretch really is a killer, although I've got used to it. If it's too much then for the position just before the stretch position use your middle and ring finger instead of ring and little. Then when you move to the stretch position put index finger on D string, middle finger on B string and after picking put the little finger on B string 9th fret. It's the same note although being on the B string slightly less bright than E string equivalent. You also won't get three strings ringing together, just two. But if you're a beginner it's a lot easier. You could do yourself an injury with that long stretch if your hand isn't practised for it.

Generally like your lessons. I like the way it sounds when you play it, but too much of a stretch for my fingers. I can't do a 6 fret reach with my index finger on high E and my pinky trying to get a clean B string six frets up the fret board while holding my middle finger on another string. Add doing it in time, too much. My anatomy doesn't work that way. Thanks for all of your effort and videos.
