- Hey everyone Wolf Lord Rho here!
Today we kick off Astra Militarum week! And where better to begin, then with perhaps the greatest legend of them all... Commissar Yarrick!
Spoiler Warning to begin the events we are discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Helsreach" by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first! As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself. Not only that we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them we don't have this amazing lore to talk about. Link: www.blacklibrary.com/warhamme...

Nothing scares Orks apart from Yarrick! They believe him to be Immortal and so he is!
And he's Thrakka's best friend, "Cuz dat lit'le humie gives him all da gud foights."
Ya git never eard dat hiz Red Eye Killz ORKZ on sight ?
An interesting thing to think about...
Oh my Emperoe. I never thought of it that way. Damn bro!
@holysoks1 yeah, but what happens in a game of orky telephone. Emperor 2.0 might become more like Angron always looking for a fight.
What was that quote
"Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young"
Yarrick right there.
When Ghazghkull is having a dick measuring contest with a Hoomy then you know he's got the Juice.
"Beware the one-eyed human who beat an Ork Warboss in a duel and is also able to use his Power Claw" - Modern Ork proverb.
@@henryviiifake8244 I'm pretty sure it goes "Beware commissars" - Modern everyone proverb.
The bureaucrats of the Munitorum care not who you are, you will get fucked over by them.
You either die a hero or live long enough to become a badass.
Reminds me of the story of the old man at the Olympic games when all of Sparta stood to let him sit down
If I remember correctly, yarrick has never had to shoot any guardsmen under his command for the offense of retreating coz he charges along with them pulling them from the front.. Not a lot of commissars would do that..
Yarrick inspired such loyalty in the Guard. No one wanted to be the one that abandoned him.
@@Knights_Oath he's the only commissar to have led a squad of astartes i think.. Black templars if I'm not wrong..

A commissar leading black templars
This is no ordinary man, he's something far greater. The emperor truly does protect, humanity has yarrick among other legends.
@@tu4i775 listen to sabaton's 82nd all the way.. That is pretty much commissar yarrick.. What is really cool about him is that he doesn't need to bark around trying to establish his authority.. He just speaks firmly with a calm but heavy demeanor and that's enough to silence a crowd.. He's one of the few commissars out there that has that aura of authority that no one questions be they mortal or astartes..
lead by example.
lets be fair, Yarrick has been a legend since he was a kid. The Survivor novel made him into a legend
That origin story of his was brutal and badass. He was supposed to live a somewhat sheltered life then grim dark donkey punched his life.
I'm not familiar with his origins, what's his back story. I don't know of anything before Armageddon.
michael howell go listen to Survivor. It’s an hour long audiobook on UA-cam. Coddled fat spoiled kid loses his parents and is sent off to his hard as nails war vet grandpa who teaches him how to survive and fight. 3 years into his new life orks attack and his grandfather is called into service and never seen again, with yarrick being left alone to fend for himself at the age of 10
@@michaelhowell2326 SPOILER ALERT his parents were murdered and he was sent to live with his dishonorable discharged former astra militarum grandpa who literally paid kids in the hood to beat the shit out of him to toughen him up, then hs learns to fight back from the training he receives from grandpappy Yarrick. Then the ORKs take over his planet...he survives for months on his own setting traps and killing gretchen as like a preteen until the empire take the planet back. he rescues a psyker kid from an orc encampment only for the kid to die from friendly fire from a guard unit, So Kid Yarrick stabs the guard for killing his new friend
@@WalknTalknStevnHawkn I'll have to check that out for sure.

Yarrick is such a legend that even the Orks chant his name.
They don’t chant his name. They use it to scare the grots into submission.
Yarrick survives because Orks believed that they must have a great adversary to fight against. Their collective will through the Warp made him survive things that would've killed all of the mortals.
@@dyingearth ooooh I love the idea of that
@@dyingearth Isn’t it the same reason that the power claw works? The orks are so impressed by this orky humie that their collective waaaagh energy allows him the ability to command ork technology. I’m not particularly well-versed on Yarrick so I might be mistaken.

In theory, he shouldn't be able to even _lift_ that Power Claw, so I'm pretty convinced it's the Orks WAAGH magic doing it.
when the enemy is so afraid of you to the point you are made effectively immortal and stronger thanks to a latent effect they all possess
Orks have lost The Game.
Literally. Yarrick uses fear to help his legend grow. Whenever he attacked/ambushed Orks, he would always leave one survivor to spread the story.
I like how yarrick gets a power boost because even the orks believe he's a badass!
Iv been learning Warhammer facts from a couple channels and apparently Orks believe that red things are faster therefore anything they paint red becomes faster BUT they also believe something about another Colour Apparently they believe that the Colour Blue is lucky therefor any Orks wearing a Blue garment or trinket have supernatural luck....its also why the Ultramarines are so powerful....because they literally have the luck of an anime main protagonist due to the Orks belief
@@MeelogMalterion that explains their plot armor memes
The fact that a mere human is respected and looked upon in such a high regard speaks volumes of who Sebastian Yarrick truly is. The epiphany of Human courage. The Imperium is lucky to have Commamders like these that inspire millions of ordinary guardsmen on the Battlefield day in and day out. Putting their lives on the line for all of Mankind's survival.
Legend has it that if Orks had beds, they'd be checking under them for Yarrick and Marbo

It will be interesting to hear Wolf Lord Rho talk about commisar Cain at some point in the future.

@@redcuriosity6598 hahaha! Right you are, brother!
Commissar Yarrick surveys the orc gargant that is stopped. It's the lynchpin of the orc line, and is an open challenge to the space Marines defending this area.
Yarrick turns his head to look at the man beside him, "chapter Master may I borrow your combat knife?"
A huge space Marine nods and hands Yarrick his knife.
"Give me 20 minutes chapter Master then begin your attack"
The Marine, a living legend himself, nods. "As you say commissar."
Yarrick climbs over the trench wall and starts walking towards the gargant. Legend says he could be heard up and down the imperial lines muttering" I'm getting too old for this".
20 minutes later the gargant explodes. The space Marines charge. Halfway to the orc lines they run past commissar Yarrick. He was walking backwards towards the line firing at the orcs.
When the chapter Master got to him, all Yarrick said as it handed the man back just the hilt of his knife was, "apologies chapter Master it seems I broke your knife."

That's scene emulates Malcador's confrontation with Horus. He needed no help either to make Horus back down.
Surely no Adeptus Astartes is courageous because no loyal Adeptus Astartes has ever known fear.
This is one of those double edged sword , when your (Yarrick) is so legendary that even the orks respect you, and ork respect is shown by putting together a waaagghh so massive that they had to invent drop astroids to bring a sufficient force to give Yarrick a challenge. Really if Yarrick wasn’t such a legend I think the ork waaagh would have been much smaller on the third war for Armageddon.
When your name sparks fear in Orks, it's safe to call yourself a goddamn badass...

This is why, now that Cadia had fallen. They need to reboot the Armageddon Steel Legion in plastic.

I really recommend reading Pyres of Armageddon since it tells the stories of the defence of Hades Hive itself from Yarrick’s POV. And I REALLY recommend reading Chains of Golgotha since its somewhat a prequel to the 3rd War for Armageddon.
Mini Spoilers:
Yarrick was captured aboard a Space Hulk which was comparable to the Death Star. He led a revolution amongst the captives but He alone managed to escape by the grace of Ghazghkull. In this novel, Ghazghkull did speak a few low gothic one liners to Yarrick. But the most unforgettable was that, basically, Ghazghkull told Yarrick to prepare Armageddon for the best war ever before letting him escape aboard a transport ship. Such BAD ASS
Absolute class, Yarrick, Grimaldus, Helreach. This is 40k at its finest
Only one other Commissar could hold such esteem and respect from space marines - Commissar Holt.

Do you reckon Ghazghkull checks under his bed and in his closet for Yarrick before he goes to bed at night?
Every passage in Helsreach is basically pure awesome sauce. I always say, if you only want to read 1 W40K novel, Helsreach is the one. Wanna read a 2nd? Rynn's World. A 3rd? Legion of the Damned. After that you're hooked. Also praise the Emperor for giving us Richard Boylan to animate that novel for us.
Yarrick is a Legend , a man made of steel and sheer fucking will , and rock solid faith in the Emperor !
But what makes Yarrick a great character is also his background , Hellsreach and Pyres of Armageddon are great , but nothing fleshes him out better than the novel Imperial Creed .
How as a junior Commissar he already shared a lot of his old self's values , was strict and ruthless when he needed to be , but was always fair , and would go as far as challenge an Inquisitor when his men were unjustly wronged or accused . How his mentor , Lord Commissar Rasp , had quite an influence on Yarrick and how both would learn the hard way that combat and fighting aside , the role of a Commissar is inherently political , that the worst threats come from within and that trusting the wrong person can prove disastrous on a planetary scale .
How He and Seroff eventually went from best friends to mortal enemies is also tragic .
My commander is Col Straken, we slay orks by the bushel, we frag commisars when they get out of line... but when Yarrick passes, we dip our banners, when he commands, we are on the bounce.
Ngl the narration is like a bed time story. I could fall asleep to this.
Ever since I got into the hobby the steel legion and Yarrik have been my all time favs, hands down. Just bad asses.

I read it last month. Fantastic!
I’m continuing to listen but I can’t actually believe I haven’t read Helsreach after all this time?? Especially after Bowdens epic anime and it being written by ADB!! I’m waiting for the reworks if plague war and those story arcs as I’ve not read the older ones yet so perfect!! Great vid as usual WLR, informative and entertaining as ever, thank you my friend jtx
I remember when Yarrick first showed up loughting his power tweezers aloft. He was a figure to respect back then. Just killing a Warboss in combat (while wounded), then tearing off their arm & head speaks of what a brutal legend Yarrick is. & Ghazghull put on his Mega armour
So in 2000 I played a Armageddon Steel Legion Army during the 3rd war of Armageddon event and yes we did lose Hades Hive those damn speed freaks. I really love those old Steel Legion metal minis with the cool looking gas masks, and the Sentinel with a Lascannon. The good old days.
