  • Today we're trying to wrap our minds around the "why's" of each step in creating an 808 type clap. We're analyzing the "808 type clap" recipe from the great sound designer, Adam Schneider, and trying to take it to a level of understanding.

    Great job! Really liked how you broke down all the components. It's kind of a convoluted patch with a lot of little tricks and you explained it all excellently! 🤘

      AdamSchneiderMusic thanks, Adam. It was never meant to be an attempt at attacking your approach, but rather reminding people to use their ears as well. People with a lot of knowledge and experience can use your tutorial to get there fast, then adjust later. Newbs can have a go at sound design, just to learn how the menu works and a little bit of what the machine is capable of. This is an attempt to give those whose one step further than beginner level, to get a bit deeper understanding of what all the steps actually do. I know I’m a bit clumsy with both theory and English. So very thankful that you shared your appreciation. It means a lot. If I was to listen to anyone, then you’re the guy! On point and precise!

    Thank you for breaking down the steps. New to Synthesis. Still wrapping my brain around why each step changes the sound. Been watching Tempest videos before I purchase one. Love that it's a sound design instrument sequencer vs just loading samples (have too many samplers already if that is even possible). I am looking to make my own sounds. Wish I was a few years ealier since prices are not cheaper anymore.

      John Sondericker thanks, John! So glad you got something out of it. Don’t be afraid of asking questions here. Your interaction with me is gold, and makes me think of new problem solving methods and idas for videos, if I haven’t made a video about it already. You on a Tempest, btw?

    Cheers handsome! Have been watching your videos since I received my tempest a couple of weeks ago, your videos have helped me a lot! Your voice assigning video as with this one have helped me in exploring the tempest's capabilities, there's a lot to explore and I greatly appreciate people like you guiding others along the way with such amazing hardware
    I've found that i'm having troubles developing percussive clap elements from a sound design standpoint, guess I just need to explore the elaborate mod-matrix further, anyway cheers, you're helping me a lot!

      Tummy Licker thanks a lot, Tummy! I appreciate your response a lot. I will most likely make a video that looks closer into the mod matrix soon. But I have a few other requests and stuff I need to do first. 3rd episode of the six voices series, a bass tutorial how’s and why’s, and this will come before or after these, depending on the time I have. The voices episodes take more planning and preparation. And I also wanna find some time to actually create more music. Well well, I guess I’ll be able to do it all 😉 just gotta be a bit patient. Luckily I’m way more productive than just a few months back.

      John Richardson recipes are good for trying and experiencing sound designing. But yeah, the analysing, testing, hearing and questioning, is what takes you from being able to follow a recipe to actually understanding sound design on a deeper level.

      Tundrah Sounds could have been the EQ or EG 1 init, but it is incredibly difficult to program drum/claps for the sole reason (as of listening w/ earphones on this video) or programming w/ headphones the clicking percussive DB can hurt the ears... it’s a delicate balance. I usually use as much cutoff as possible and as little EG init aspossible.

      @@johnrichardson3297 Thanks, John! You have very good points. It can be bad for our hearing to use headphones on high level when using to high pitches and mess with the resonance and such. Would be even worse if I used in ear earbuds or something. As of right now, I don't have a very good room to work in, so I'm forced to use my earphones a lot :/

      Tito z have you tried this one? ua-cam.com/video/0l5qsUHW9xo/v-deo.html ITS not mine, but Its similar. I’d shape it a bit differently, but that’s a good starting point. I try not to focus too much on other synths yet, as this is quite the niche channel. I will add more synths to the repertoire. But the Tempest will be my main synth for a long time.

      Tito z I’m glad you enjoyed it. But I don’t think his was trash. It’s different, and not what you’re looking for. That will be the case for many people watching my video as well. Can’t please everyone I guess. I think his video shows us a bit less layered sound, but not really a bad one. In my case, we used on noise source for the overall sound, and the short impulses for each clap repetition on top of that sound. The first noise sound has the feel of “room” with the cutoff.envelope.

    I love your videos and i'd like you show us one day how create a deep fat unsual bass. I don't know if i'm clear... Your english is perfect unlike mine so the question is where do you come from ?

    • @TundrahSounds
      @TundrahSounds  5 років тому +1

      Thank you, Y O! I could try to create a deep and fat bass. But are you thinking about a bass drum, or a synth bass for bass lines? I've gotten pretty decent at both, imho. But I would need to hear examples of what you're looking for, if I'm going to be creating anything close to what you're after. Btw, I'm born and raised in Norway. My mother is from the Philippines, while my father is from Norway.

    Hey, Thanks for great video. I have a little question about mod paths. When you change pitch envelope destination to lowpass filter - you actually turn it to lowpass filter envelope. So now we have 2 low pass filter envelopes working together? One after another or both the same time?
    After in mod section you choose as a source - pitch envelope - but we don't have pitch envelope. It is lowpass filter envelope, no? and you choose destination - osc 1/2 mix. Why cannot we just to make pitch envelope destination to osc 1/2 mix?

    • @dfcomposer
      @dfcomposer 5 років тому +1

      One more question. When you choose in mod paths section as a source pitch envelope for instance - and you choose to affect osc 1/2 mix. It will affect also osc 1/2 mix but it will still work as a pitch envelope itself? So mod paths - it doesn't change totally the envelope destination but it works as addition?

    • @TundrahSounds
      @TundrahSounds  5 років тому +1

      The ForKing Jam yes! Mod paths works as addition to what it already does. The same envelope can be applied to multiple things. But you only have so many envelopes. That’s why you’ll have to choose an envelope that will do the job. If one envelope has a certain amount of delay before it’s activated, then that delay will be applied to the mod path as well.

    • @TundrahSounds
      @TundrahSounds  5 років тому +1

      If I change the destination to lowpass filter, it will work as a lowpass filter envelope. So yes, we now have two low pass envelopes or filter envelopes. Did you see me add the delay? The delay makes the filter open at different times. The two envelopes have different «timing», just like a bunch of people will often clap with some delay between them. A little bit of gap between the impulses.
      Even though I’ve changed the destination, the pitch envelope will still be named the pitch envelop, as that is where it is located. Amp, filter, pitch, and two additional envelopes are available to our use. Only pitch and the two next envelopes can have other destinations. Amp and filter envelopes can only have «other destinations» as well, if using the mod paths.

    Hey! I have a question you don't cover here. I've noticed when I hit a pad in a series of times, every 4th hit there's a bit of noise present. Depending on the Oscillator or Sample this is either a click or some feedback that drones out. It happens every single time on the 4th hit...Any idea what's happening?

    • @TundrahSounds
      @TundrahSounds  3 роки тому +1

      Recalibrate your oscillators. It should work. My tempest is a bit unstable. I sometimes have to calibrate it multiple times for all voices to sound right.
