the more clips of older RTD shows i watch, the more i realise he only knows like 6 actors, and they're all in doctor who
That sounds more like a BBC thing than a RTD thing, to be fair.
thats british tv in general tbh
@@Xitoshi exactly, britain has a total of 20 actors or something
@@katarina7520 And they're all in Doctor Who.
Chibnall was the same, half the cast of Broadchurch shows up in some way or another
This is really interesting to rewatch after the Doctor's casting being revealed. What you said about falling out of love with the show in the last decade rings very true to me as well and I really hope that the excitement I'm feeling now is a promise of a renewed love for the show.
Same, Mel! So excited!
@@2nd3rd1st This is old but ...if you think having an actor of colour play the doctor, especially with Ncuti being queer and black, is somehow not a huge step forward for casting, then I'm afraid you need to re-examine your beliefs on the kind of society we live in.
@roadrollerdio565 Could you elaborate? I’m curious what you mean in this comment.
I've seen people say that Lydia West is too youthful but I think It's A Sin was a great showcase for her range. She was amazing as a grounding supportive presence and in the scene where Jill scolded Richie's mum.
I mean, she's older than Matt Smith was, and she's as capable as him of putting the youthfulness away when she needs to. There's honestly, so much of her range that could be brought to the Doctor.
People also said that Katherine Tate is too comedic. With how childlike Jodie's and Matt's Doctors were Lydia West would do just fine no matter her age.
Those people also probably said the same about Matt Smith
She's 28 and Matt Smith was 26 when he was announced as the next doctor so I think people are wrong if they believe she's too young. Also considering that the new doctor will be around in 2023 she'll be 30 by the time it comes around. 4 years younger than Tennant was when he started and 4 years older than Smith. I think that works pretty well.
We finally got a female doctor and she got stuck with the worst writing in the history of the show. Now she's leaving and we get RTD back. Really not fair.
I really hope she comes back sometime. Davies brought Tennant back, who knows...
I knew about the Casanova connection but I didn't know about The Second Coming! Thanks so much for another amazing video. I'm also hoping for a renewed Doctor Who romance when RTD returns!
me too I loved this information
So Ncuti Gatwa's (The next Doctor) last project before his era starts, was in Sex Education season 3. His arc in Season 3 is from what I remember is him struggling with his sexuailty and his church. In one scene he meets God. God tells him "I made you bright so others could see."
That's insane how well you called the religous and sexuality themes so far in advance.
This video reminds me of my problem with the Doctors post-RTD. Smith is really good, but very clearly trying to capitalize on the Sexy Nerd thing; Capaldi (until I'd argue his final series when he finally came into his own) was so messy in characterization; and I really wanted Whitaker to have more of a tinkering inventor personality (which they displayed in her first episode when she built her sonic, but never again). RTD had pretty clear characterizations for his Doctors, and the Doctors since have been largely mish-mashes of Eccelston and Tennant. I'm excited to see what he has in store going forward, because I doubt he'll retread old ground.
No, Tennant is the sexy nerd. Smith is the homosexual in the closet. And Capaldi is from a rock student to a badass professor.
@@mayotango1317 Yes, but Smith was kind of trying to capitalize on the Tumblr fandom sexy nerd thing (with mixed results, but I also think he did a wonderful job, so no shade at all). Smith didn't funk like Tennant did, but there was a part of me that felt his character was a LITTLE Tumblr-pandering.
And yeah, I don't know about that Capaldi description. I've watched series 8 three times and his writing/characterization is such an unfocused mess. No offense intended though. If you found something in Capaldi's first two series that you connect with, that's great! He's a GREAT actor! He was never the problem.
@@60wattmoon I think you need to watch Series 9 and 10 to see his character develoment.
@@60wattmoon No, Smith is more a gay hispter.
@@mayotango1317 I have seen series 9 and 10... Multiple times lol. I'm saying I don't think his characterization is consistent until 10, and it has little to do with his personal arc, which I do appreciate.
i'm so excited for rtd to be showrunner again! i just haven't enjoyed doctor who since he left, it all just feels so overblown and melodramatic but not even in a camp way. moffat is just not my cup of tea as a show runner, really. but i've loved literally everything rtd has done that i've seen! cucumber banana tofu was absolutely game-changing for me- it was the first time i felt really seen by a show/shows on tv/the internet. my first real sense of belonging in the queer community. plus, i'll always love the charming, damaged northern english doctor- what a gem to have as your first doctor hahaha
Please, the RTD era is more melodranatic and soap opera.
@@mayotango1317 soap opera is the ultimate form of entertainment- anime, wrestling, rtd doctor who it's all great
@@leahcameron9459 No, is more scy-fi fantasy like "Loki" or Evangelion.
@@mayotango1317 do we have to do this? The Moffat vs RTD thing sucked the first time around and I really don’t want a repeat.
I liked the Moffat era, it wasn't terrible. It had its missteps (I've NEVER been an Amy/Rory fan) but overall I liked it.
On the topic of accents my headcanon is that the accent of the Doctor comes from where they regenerate like for example I think the reason that 13 has a Yorkshire accent is because 12 regenerated above Sheffield. Anyway I agree that I think that RTD will most definitely not cast a straight white male - and I think him casting a woman is very likely and as you said I think T'nia Miller or Lydia West would be perfect, I can see both of them as the Doctor especially T'nia since the future Doctor in the Rose novel is described similarly to her so it would be amazing if RTD casts her (and gives her a flaming sword too!) Either way I'm excited to see what RTD does though there is still 9 episodes of the current era to enjoy before then which I am excited for - I personally love every Doctor Who era! I'm VERY excited for both what is coming soon as well as the future!
Or the accents of the people around them as they regenerate. (The tenth doctor having an accent from the same place as rose, and the eleventh doctor was remembering Amy right before he regenerated and got a Scottish accent, and they both did not regenerate on earth)
@@justmanbunisfine that's very true, it could be both actually, I like that idea- if the Doctor is with someone when they regenerate who they are with or who they see/remember could decide the accent (Rose in Parting of the Ways, Amy in Time of the Doctor) but when they're alone their location dictates the accent!
People from Christmas didn't speak in Glaswegian accents though.
And before anyone brings up Amy, Karen Gillan is from the opposite end of Scotland, and her Invernesian accent is a lot different from Capaldi's.
To say there's one Scottish accent is like when the Americans say that there's on "British" or "English" accent.
The location thing falls down when you consider 7 regenerating into 8 or War into 9 anyway.
The flaming sword thing is silly, I'd rather they substitute it for a red/orange Sonic Screwdriver or something.
@@LiveHedgehog it's mostly just a fun headcanon sort of idea!
@@LiveHedgehog yeah but it doesn’t have to be a rule, probably more of an influence, otherwise the majority of instances are coincidences
It's funny, 'cause, I'm pretty sure T'Nia Miller has been in Doctor Who before. Yeah, she played the 11th incarnation of the General, I believe. And from the description of the 'next' Doctor in the Rose novelization, it sounds like the character might not be too far off. A flaming sword?
They could explain it like they did with 12 in that he chose the face of the man from the Pompeii episode to remind him to save people; T’nia’s general was the result of Capaldi killing her previous regeneration to save Clara - they could make it a reminder to 14 in a similar way, it was quite a big deal for the Doctor to do that but they kinda glossed over it at the time
There are at least a few occasions when the Doctor was cast as an actor who appeared in the show previously. Aside from Capaldi the one that comes to mind is when Robert DeGado’s Master regenerated into Anthony Ainsley the character he played was taken over by the Master. Yeah it’s a bit rude; the point is there’s plenty of precedent and the General being Gallifreyan would kinda fit better.
Colin baker played Commander Maxil. It’s no issue
@@gateauxq4604 Not just the Doctor, but also companions. Has been the case for at least Freema Agyeman and Karen Gillan.
One of the other doctors on this list is the girl from DW episode Human Nature
I got full body goosebumps bumps hearing "I don't want to go" again then you played the scene.
So effective
Can't believe the 15th Doctor is basically T'nia Miller and Olly Alexander at the same time
:-D Love this comment!
The "I dont wanna go" moment get me in tears everytime
Ive seen The Second Coming but never put it together than Christopher Eccleston was playing the same character but ITS SO OBVIOUS 🤦 Im sad we may never see Jodie’s Doctor get some better scripts but if RTD has to recast he might as well lean into changing the Doctor further. I see where Years and Years doesn’t present to most obvious possible Doctor templates but I always felt for T’nia Miller’s character because she was the most down to earth character in the whole series. I could easily see her being more of a Jon Pertwee type of Doctor-the mad scientist turned down to a dull roar and the charismatic thinker turned up to 11. It’s about time (haha) a nuWho Doctor was a lot less manic; even Eccleston had unhinged grin he was always flashing before he did something absurd.
Anyway it’s about time we had a female Doctor with a writer who knows that you ‘write women’ by writing them the same as any other human. 😫
I'd like to see T'Nia Miller as The Next Doctor. I think she could make it work really well as have seen her in quite a variety of roles over the years. As to companions. Well I'd like to see RTD go a bit old school with companions and go back to what the classic era did by having the Doctors companions come from different times and even different planets. Am sort of bored the contemporary modern-day companion thing.
Awesome video! I’ve never really interacted with any of RTD’s other works so I had no idea that both 9 and 10 were pulled from projects he’d recently worked on! Super intrigued to see if he repeats that pattern when he takes over again. But who knows, maybe he’ll choose somebody completely unexpected
Ok if T'nia Miller is cast I might actually be motivated to start watching dw again.... She would be sosososo good in the role. Her acting in Bly Manor was phenomenal
She's absolutely my number one pick right now - I am so in love with that idea! lol
ALSO MY TOP CHOICE BY SEVERAL COUNTRY MILES
ew no never, id rather the Manchester bomber be the 14th dr
Her acting in Bky Manor was shockingly wooden.
I'm split between her and Omari Douglas, and I'm biased towards Omari cos he's from Wolverhampton and west midlands representation is important. (I'm joking but I would like to see a Doctor from the midlands, with the accent and everything)
when you put "pause for crying" after the Tenth Doctor died... I felt that :D :'( I hadn't heard that RTD was taking Doctor Who over again, I stopped watching a while ago (don't live in the UK so it was difficult to access) but now I want to start again - I really liked the first RTD era :)
I was already on board with the idea of Lydia West as the next Doctor after her brilliant performance in It's a Sin alone, but after watching the entirety of Years and Year this week, there was one scene in Episode 5 in which her character gives a beautiful speech about why (without giving away spoilers) being 'connected' was so important to her, that really sold it for me. The speech really reminds me of the one the Ninth Doctor gives Rose about who he is in the the first episode of Series One which says to me, West could really be one of the greats if she did become Doctor under RTD!
A new video so soon! This is a treat :)
This was fascinating! Like you, I've spent the last 16 years rewatching the RTD era, but I've not seen most of his other shows so I had no idea of the parallels you explored here. I'm so intrigued to see what he's going to come back with, and I hope we hear more from you about it when it eventually hits our screens.
(Side note, I had a moment of confusion when I realised this wasn't posted on your Doctor Who channel, but it makes sense since this has become the place of all your brilliant video essays!)
Since Tennant's back as the Doctor now, "I don't want to go." line comes up more meaningful.
I JUST watched the video about Loki and RTD's work, and watching this now is too much fun, again I am so excited to see where he takes the Doctor this time, and to see Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor!!
Damn I didn't think that clip from Tenant's regeneration would still make me tear up after more than 10 years.
I really, REALLY want to see Jo Martin reprise the role of the Doctor. I know it’s a stretch as she was a one-off in an episode, maybe something for an incarnation or two down the line, but she was amazing and so commanding in presence and I want more of her.
Not only was Jo Martin’s performance very strong, Chibnall accidentally gave her more depth than his main incarnation of the Doctor.
This is my favourite dw content in years. Including the show. Thanks. You’re great.
Not me crying over the clips of 10th Doctor and Rose. It's been years but damn, still hurts.
Edit: just as I wrote that you showed the regeneration moment 😐
I know that this won't happen but what I would love is the doctor to be an older woman, perhaps Granny Weatherwax-esc.
This is a Russell T Davies commentary channel now and honestly, I'm not mad
Well, we've got a black, queer actor playing the Doctor now. I'm so excited to see where Ncuti Gatwa takes the role! And under the direction of RTD!!!
Fun fact in the episode of the first season Doctor Who revival Father's Day there's a bunch of Socialist Worker posters plastered on the wall taking aim at Thatcher.
i could also see olly as a potential companion. he would fit an almost any pond esque companion
I'm really hoping for T'Nia Miller. I saw her in the Haunting of Bly Manor, she was absolutely incredible.
I learned so much from this video! I didn't know a lot of what was talked about. It's been a few years since I've been involved in the doctor who community but this video makes me want to watch it again!
I'm very happy with RTD's choice, hope we'll get a new golden era
You sold me on T'Nia Miller, I want her as the next Doctor very badly
Lydia West is definately my number 1 for the Doctor. Between Years and Years and It's a Sin, she's got everything you'd need for the Doctor. She's super charismatic, and in Years and Years, she nailed the really overwhelming enthusiasim for technology that people like Peter Davison pulled off. She's also got the caring side of the down. And she's able to play up the really strange and detached elements of her character in Years and Years when she needs to. I'm seeing as being this weird combination of the Fifth and the Second Doctors, and just thinking about her in the role is getting me hyped for RTD2.
Now I'm actually excited for new Doctor Who!
I have gone beyond losing interest in Doctor Who but this has certainly piqued my interest enough to give this new season a try. It was pretty much the only thing I was paying a tv licence for before so might have to actually pay for one again lol
I have never watched DW and I don't think I ever will, but I just like hearing you talk about things.
Really?
You really should give some of the individual episodes a watch. Because DW has some fantastic episodes.
I've only recently come across your channel and I absolutely love it. Currently there's about two and a half weeks before the big 60th specials and I am so goddamn excited
I would lose my mind if tnia was the doctor. I literally love her so much
I feel like the Doctor ought to have grandparent or aunt/uncle energy. Miller has mum energy instead. Now Jo Martin, there's someone with aunt energy.
woah a 2nd video from you so soon, how lucky we are.
thanks for blessing us
I'm thinking Russell did ask people from It's a Sin to be The Doctor but somehow it didn't work out for some reason. I like your commentary here. Makes sense.❤❤
I found you're channel about a month ago but never expected you to make doctor who videos but as a life long fan of the show, i'm pleasantly surprised lol
oh my god when you said Jessica Hynes I audibly gasped: I would go back to this show if she were the doctor.
Now I'm imagining that Joan Redfern was actually the Doctor all along, and The Family of Blood was a Multi-Doctor story about two separate incarnations of The Doctor who both used the Chameleon Arch and hid in the same point in time without ever realizing it
@@DoinItforNewCommTech or maybe the doctor chooses her face to remind themselves to think more carefully before they act. Joan called him out for choosing locations to hide on a whim and resulting in many people's deaths.
I'm so excited too! I always shared DW with my partner long distance - we laughed and cried together, it was what we watched to feel comfort when the distance felt like too much. So glad to know RTD is back and how exciting to expect something new!
From VB I expect nothing less than an intelectual extravaganza!!!!!
Just found you today & can't stop watching your content. I agree with a lot of your views & deeply appreciate learning more from you. Thank you for this break from my (ahem) obsessions.
I gotta thank your for making this video because it truly has made me optimistic about Russell returning. When it was first announced I was full of dread because the last thing I want Doctor Who to be is the same and I was terrified that Russell was just gonna make the same show he did in 2005. You’ve truly made me believe that Russell will make it a different show.
I'm so excited for this I can't even.
NOT DISAPPOINTED!
9:44 to receive a tender head kiss from Jack Harkness...
I loved the video, and this may be just a me problem, but I am so used to see your face at the thumbnails that I almost skipped this video for not knowing it was yours.
great video and as always the voiceover sounds so good
So many shows & movies I must now see. Thank you, yay!
Watching this now, when RTD has returned with David Tennant as Fourteen, I have to laugh at how right you were about him using an actor and character type he'd already had!
You have amazing content, and wonderful delivery. It is no wonder your channel is growing.
I'm loving this Davies series and I want a podcast going through his complete filmography.
When I was in my 20's back in the eccleston era and tenant era my friend was going to go for a Dr who interview for a Dr I was going to go with him and was wanting to be the Dr as a Jonny rotten type punk doc with a flair of Capt jack.
The more I watch of your latest videos, the more I wanna get into RTD's older work. Thank you for the great parallels and all the info! So many things have been put in my watchlist recently thanks to you :D
where did you even find footage for the second coming, apart from the second episode just chilling on youtube for some reason - did you purchase the vhs from amazon
I've never been a Doctor Who fan, but I love the enthusiasm and level of research involved here, very charming. Plus it is good to know that if the next doctor is a "black woman wielding a sword" that all the inevitable criticisms of that being a "woke SJW culture choice" by the usual suspects will be dead in the water due to the lore very clearly stating it like that.
Your video has perfectly captured what I loved about RTD's first run, and especially why Christopher Eccleston is 'my' Doctor as they say. Camp as hell but also exceptionally relatable. I'm beyond excited to see what he does next, it'll be fantastic I'm sure :P Mind you, Tom Baker is definitely a sex symbol, I'll die on that hill
Only just seen this video. Brilliant video, thank you. Supposedly we will find out in the next couple of weeks who it will be. I don't really mind as long as the writing improves.
As someone who never watched a single episode of Doctor Who, this was a very interesting and fun video to watch!
Need to point out that David Tennant and Ledger have oodles of charisma in common. ❤️❤️
I've stopped watching Dr Who after season 8th but watching your video makes me super excited for next season ! I had no idea that Davies was back so I'm super happy and it makes me want to watch all the special episodes of 10th and cry my heart out another time...
I've also kind of fallen out of love with the show and I miss it. I really hope this new era will get me back into it
Hey, I really love your channel. I’ve been devouring your content since I’ve found it. I’m curious about what you think of all the news that came about Doctor Who after this video.
I also kinda fell out of love with the show in the last decade or so, and I cannot *wait* for davies to come back - I don't care if it ends up being only for one season, it's gonna be great.
Personally I would love Jessica Hynes (and she was in one of my favorite Ten stories) or Lydia West. Crossing my fingers for another woman doctor
Ritu Arya qualifies by having been in a bit part in Dr Who years ago. Her performance in the Umbrella Academy definitely qualifies her.
personally i'm not bothered about whether they're a woman or not, i'm just hoping for a talented performer.
@@galarstar052 They have all been good actors, I am hoping for a well-written script and a fabulous story.
This makes me want to rewatch seasons 1-4 so bad
Hey! I just found ur channel a few days ago and I'm OBSESSED. You always take the words out of my mouth and I'm just so in love with your brain low key. Anyways will be watching everything you create love from Mexico :DDD
This was so interesting and enlightening! I don’t watch much British tv beyond Doctor Who and some reality shows, so I never would have been able to make these connections. Well done!
If I was going to pick RTD ideal Doctor Who it would probably be Michael Sheen, but I doubt it would happen.
I rally liked the discription of the 9th doctor TARDIS!
5:39 wait a second, how did I miss the fact that Eve Myles played in both Doctor Who and Torchwood???
I think the actress with Steve in The Second Coming is the same one who plays the possessed woman in "Midnight", from the Ten&Donna era? She also, iirc, voiced Estraven in the BBC radio adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness.
Your channel has been an amazing find
This is fascinating! I had no idea about these connections to other works!
I love this!! I love this! I soo hope things go well on the new dw series and would love to hear more of your thoughts anyway
I kind of lost my love of the series from mid-matt smith onwards, but this video really gives me hope for the next chapter
T'Nia Miller is my ultimate pick for the next doctor, she would be incredible.
I Just want to point out that Lucifer just ended, they had their Finale, and Tom Ellis is free to play the doctor, and please dear Gods let him be it! because, he would crush it!
that is so weird and so cool to imagine tbh
The actual reason for the tenths doctors accent is that Tennant just did it on set without being asked and it stuck.
I never even considered Ben Wishaw but now he’s joint with T’Nia Miller woah both would be amazing. Even if T’Nia was the Doctor and he was the companion that’d be so awesome (idk if I see T’Nia as the companion, she’d be so commanding on the screen that she’d have to be the Doctor).
i love u verilybitchie thank you for the rtd content queen
Russel T Davies is the next showrunner?! :OO omg, that's like the second best news of the year!!!
I've heard a couple of people mention Peep Show's Paterson Joseph as a potential Doctor. I think he would be a great choice.
To me, the perfect candidate is Suranne Jones! The first time I saw her charachter in Gentleman Jack, I thought "Did the Doctor get stuck in the XIX century again?" Suranne's Anne Lister has the Doctorish charm, cheekyness and confidence. I half expected to see the fob watch lying forgotten on some shelf in Shibden Hall X) And her costume wouldn't need to be changed much - it already has a neat steampunk feel to it! Just swap the skirt for some pants and she is ready to run from Dalkes. And her hat is COOL! RTD probably hasn't worked with Suranne before, but she's played in DW once. So, who knows, one can always hope!
I feel the exact same way in terms of...
I've fallen out of love with the show so hard
but RT Davies coming back might very well restoke my love!! I'm nervously excited for his return
And if Lydia West is the doctor? Gosh... that would be a dream
Sad to see Moffat leaving. His portrayal of the doctors and companions are iconic. Also Bill is legend!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Have you slept through Chibnall... ?
this video made me go full fangirl for the first time in so many years for doctor who!! if any of the speculations happen to become reality i may have to catch up on the show
Speaking of a gay Doctor, Ben Daniels was close to getting the role of Twelve! He was the second choice, had Peter Capaldi backed out. Ben’s Doctor era would have been groundbreaking at that time. (Recently RTD watched Ben in the National Theatre revival of The Normal Heart, where Ben is paired with Dino Fetscher who is also a regular in RTD works)
oh my god t'nia miller as the doctor is a stroke of pure genius
Still hoping for *Wunmi Mosaku* to play the next doctor. She was my choice before Whittaker was announced. I found her mesmerising in _The Body Farm_ and _Vera_ and after seeing her in _Loki_ I’m even more convinced.
I've been watching your videos for a bit now and you've really done a great job helping me understand my own bisexuality, but today I just realized that for some ungodly reason I'm not subscribed to you so let's Rectify that. Seriously though you've really helped me, thank you.
great analysis!
Thanks for another great video!
This is a very well-reasoned series of predictions. Bravo.
Personally, I want Andrea Riseborough to play the Doctor.
