  • Everything you need to know about The Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love." |
🗣️ "This song was written on a piano in the George V Hotel in Paris," Paul says. "The hotel was near the Champs-Elysees, and we had suites big enough to have a piano brought up... The idea is that all these material possessions are well and good, but money can't buy you what you really need. The irony here is that just before Paris, we'd been in Florida, where, if not love, money certainly could buy you a lot of what you wanted. But the premise stands, I think. Money can't buy you a happy family or friends you can trust. 'Can't Buy Me Love' is my attempt to write in a bluesy mode. It was a very hooky song."
On March 28, "Can't Buy Me Love" debuted at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the following week, it shot straight to the top. Since no artist had ever gone straight from outside the Top 20 to #1 on the charts previously, this broke the record for the largest jump ever. This record stood for 38 years. "Can't Buy Me Love" broke yet another record by becoming the Beatles' third consecutive #1 song, after "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You."

Not their only recording outside London. They also recorded with Tony Sheridan in Germany.

No, the Beatles didn't record with Tony Sheridan; _The Beat Brothers_ recorded with Tony Sheridan. It's a small factual difference, but The Beatles were not credited in that record. "Can't Buy Me Love" was the only time they recorded overseas under the name _"Beatles."_

What makes this song so good is the intro that is very similar to the chorus, but has the chord change on the third "can't buy me love" that then leads into the first verse--That is just a phenomenal change--those kind of changes separate the really great songwriters from the ordinary songwriters.

A great song and solo by George, those leftover twangy notes from the earlier take fit in perfectly.👍👍

Nicely done! Good photos, good sound bites. Your narrator mangled a few words, but you know what the professionals say: “There’s quality, and then there’s UA-cam quality”.

They were already global stars just three singles in and it was onward and upward from there; very interesting little video - thanks for uploading.

Can't Buy Me Love is a brilliant tune.
Especially with the Beatles running in and out of a Police Station.

George Martin was completely on point. The Beatles constantly evolved their “Beatles sound” which is why he wanted to hold back Roll Over Beethoven and the delivery of Can’t Buy me Love raised the quality of their brand to the next level. The next palpable jump was A Ticket to Ride a year later.

What was the reason for taking off the backing vocals? I always love the charm of the anthology version with them. I always figured it was just to make it easier to perform live. Great video!

I liked "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me", but their next three singles didn't appeal to me - and still don't. Then out came "Can't Buy Me Love" and the Beatles were well and truly re-instated, for me.

This song, IMHO, is one of the very few Paul songs that lack the Beatles magic....it is catchy, and performed well but it could be a song by any 60s group really.... way too cliche bluesy chord structure.

Yes, I hesitated to say because of being negative but as huge Beatles fan, I’ve never really been into this song.
Just kind of boring melodically and structurally. Feels like a throwaway that got a lot of play.

I've always thought Can't Buy Me Love is simply an (obvious) answer to Money (That's What I Want), and nowhere near as good. For my money Can't Buy Me Love lacks vibe. Speaking of Money (That's What I Want), Lennon's version is a rip-snorter, but I do also think the original version, recorded by Barrett Strong in 1959, takes the cake. Barrett Strong's version is far less aggressive than Lennon's and it's interesting to compare the two. Money (That's What I Want) was written by Berry Gordy, and was Motown's first hit record.

Ian MacDonald wrote in "Revolution in the Head" that "Money suited Lennon's persona and the group's live requirements so well that they featured it regularly between 1960 to 1964."
