Finally, a crazy-hard song that is also quite a piece of music.
I like to watch the percent counter during the solos...
I can't believe its been 10 years since I've first watched this while I was in high school. Its still boggling you were able to do this 10 years ago
Rip Buddy Rich
I think I qualify for the "Worst Luck of All-Time" award. I had almost gotten this down perfectly, and sure I would FC it. SO I made it to the solo at 7:37, but at 8:36, I missed that blue, and accidentally hit...GREEN! Boy was I pissed. I swear that qualifies for the award.
i remember watching this as a kid and being absolutely mind-blown by this solo. lack of BNS makes it look impossible haha
Buddy Rich is absolutely insane.
They could have called it "Something's Coming... and It's a Huge Drum Solo."
and its a long drum roll
This song is dynamically insane. Ghost notes, to accents, to more ghost notes, then crescendo to "normal" volume! On top of polyrhythms and crazy fast solos. That's insane if you ask me.
Always love coming back to this, still remember how mind blown I was the first time I saw it
It's been a little while since I've seen this. I used to use this video back in high school to try and learning this chart. I've listened to it so many times that I know which custom fill you're gonna do. Memories!
I'm going to try and give it another shot and maybe even download it and use clone hero.
Also fantastic playing, I should've commented that a decade ago
That's amazing! It's definitely been a while. Thanks for stopping by
If you where to join a band (if you haven't already), that band would have been the luckiest band ever. That is some insane skills right there man! Great job!
There aren't words for how awesome this is... great chart, great playing... I'm simply blow away at the talent. Good job!
For those who don't know, the official title is West Side Story Medley.
If you used matched instead of traditional grip, Buddy Rich wouldn't approve ;)
castaways2 Buddy was just being a grumpy old man, saying "I'm buddy rich, I play this way, so every other way is wrong." Don't get me wrong, I fucking love buddy rich, but in his early days he even played matched grip
This is, in all honesty, the most impressive RB drum video I have ever seen. Those jazzy beats are complete nonsense to me, I have no idea how you can see the patterns, let alone hit them. x__x
Damn that was insane. excellent job dude
Possibly the best Rock Band video I've ever seen.
@RedSharkMan the bonus points for the last solo, if i remember right, are around like 150K
Max score for this is like 800K if i remember right
This is an amazingly accurate chart. Nice job on the gold star DT
@daisy20071 lol i like how that's still getting spread around when it was a total misunderstanding.
when I said that, it was 1) in the days before drum mods, meaning fcing anything over 9 NPS on drums = miracle if it ever happened, 2) on a laggy stream going at about 8 FPS so it made the drum roll look incredibly faster than it was, 3) and before i'd even played the song myself.
when i make claims on difficulties of songs now, it's after i've played them multiple times.
This is on the album Swingin' New Big Band, recorded live in 1966.
Currently the best Rock Band video on youtube.
@094176 lol try the end solo. it's EXTREMELY difficult to not fail out due to all the reds and bass pedals, dragontaser just makes it look easy. TheLieInKingSH has the link for this custom up on his latest video, i'd say it's easily the hardest-to-pass solo (but still passable) out of any custom or real RB song out there.
The constant speedups and slowdowns with the erratic bass pedal can fail you out in a matter of 2-3 seconds if you get off track, no overreacting here lol
That sound is so nice to the ears ^^
@Zenweaponry Look up Quadruple Bass Pedal. It can't be done because we don't have the equipment on Rock Band so we can't hit 64th notes on pedals
@DarthDeth RBN songs play just like DLC. no audition mode. Audition mode plays customs (unless you're really testing a song).
Anyone still got the download?
Check C3. Oh wait this comment is 3 years old...
this is outstanding dude, great job. how long did it take you to get the song down this good?
Holy ****. I saw you try this in the stream but didn't see you get it. Congrats!
@GoHardMang actually, most of the solos had OD in them, i designed it that way
10 minutes of mind blasting goodness
@DragonTaser It would be nice to have a song this hard on drums that isn't death metal screamo for once.
If I could, I'd hit the 'Like' button one hundred times, JUST BECAUSE IT'S BUDDY RICH!!!
@sportsboy85 that's not what i said.
i said "it's easily the hardest-to-pass solo (but still passable) out of any custom or real RB song out there". as in, songs that could possibly be passed. frictional nevada can't be passed.
Frets on fire is a lifesaver!!
@Zenweaponry Frictional Nevada will forever be a custom. :]
I could use West Side Story as DLC though. I'd score duel people on it :D
Hey, I can't find this download anywhere. Can you help me out? Sorry it took 8 years to ask but Phase Shift is a thing now lol
At 4:08, is it just my headset or are those the most quiet ghost-notes ever? I really can´t hear them...
Amazing. This was after the stream where you were too tired?
This is an early version of Buddy's West Side Story - a bit restrained and tamer than some that would follow - from his record in the 60s called, "Buddy Rich's Swingin' New Big Band", I believe. Most of this is BR on this particular clip, but there are some fills on this song towards the beginning that are obviously not the great one. I don't understand the grading system though....Buddy's not ever anything less than 100%!
@daisy20071 well, what i said held true for the BeMani community, which is considerably more dedicated/hardcore than the HMX/Activision communities.
That said, the gap is closing now that custom songs have been introduced into all of this, and some people in this community are starting to become as hardcore as the BeMani people.
and i didn't think you were questioning my experience or implying i was trying to compare myself to DT, haha i just wanted to state why I was making claims.
Anyone know what performance this was taken from, and if it's on UA-cam at all? :)
@daisy20071 People with enough experience at something can generally make adequate claims at something, and while I may not be near DragonTaser's level, i've got around 10 years rhythm game experience and 7 years of that is playing drum games, plus about a total of 160 rhythm games played, which is why I felt I was in a position to say those things.
Still, while i've made claims correctly, others have been wrong and people are getting better, so i'll be more reserved with my claims.
@daisy20071 and all that I just said wasn't meant to be some sort of e-peen contest, it was just stating why I feel I have the experience to make such claims.
Then again, what's happening here is what happened to the ITG community when customs came out: people started getting exponentially better because of the difficulty of songs they were having to get used to.
When I saw your first miss I was so sad :(
2332 note streak on this song though O_o..... you're the greatest rock band drummer
the percent counter on the last solo is shaking with fear
The solo to end all drum solos. All Rock Band drumming is practice for 7:50.
Is TheLieInKing sharing this song to the public or just giving this out to friends, cuz I would love to give this a try.
*hands DragonTaser a cookie* you has earned it
@JakeTheSnake9604 Yeah, they're pretty damn quiet, but they're there.
still waiting for an FC of that second last drum-solo >.>
@DeformedSkier While it isn't nearly as hard. Creatures ov Deception says hello.
And the 2x bass versions of most of the Devin Townsend songs are just hilarious.
Teacher: "What did we learn today class?"
Class: "Don't fuck with Buddy Rich."
Is there a version of this somewhere without the Rock Band audience sound over it?
I'm sure that you'll hold 1st for like forever lol... that was quite an epic run :)
the random drum solos crack me up
@xDoobersX it's out to the public
@sgtUltimate yeah, i'm pretty sure i already claimed this myself lol
Most metal drumming (blast beats, double bass, etc) came from jazz.
@kReEaYtEr I did. I can't pass it, EVER. But by the looks of it and the evidence (how fast taser passed it) it's less of an unlikely pass than the venetian snares songs.
CRAZY! COOL!
God, when you see the color white, do you just suddenly get a burst of adrenaline or something? You hit OD phrases out of nowhere... xD
@8uiop1 If he (or anyone else) passes frictional nevada legitimately, i'll link them in my videos for two months and make a tribute video to them.
@azuritereaction lol I wasn't impugning your experience, nor was I implying that you were trying to compare yourself to DragonTaser. I simply didn't feel you'd successfully made your point, and I still don't. Your ITG reference just reiterates what I already said: if the songs are there, someone will be willing to grind til they can pass it. It just demonstrates why such claims are silly: people will find ways to get better when presented with a challenge.
Was this song from THE "West Side Story?" As in, the musical?
Finally a rock band video I have complete respect for
silly azurite! and i remember seeing you fail on this... great job dude! buddy rich is beast!
1:42 - Birth of the blast beat.
@yomaster555 So it's NOT from the musical of the same name? Ok
yeah, I was with azurite on the venetian snares song, but this one looks much easier to pass. He's a bit over reactive these days when it comes to hard customs.
@trickster47321 I now right? I was thinking that
okay so now I know where the Blast beat originated from! 1:43 FTW!!! Go Buddy!
The king of drummers meets the king of Rock Band drummers... Yea, this sounds über on point...
@azuritereaction HOLY JESUS *has fanboy moment because azurite responded to my comment*
back to srs now. I agree about the end solo, and I could NEVER pass it. It just seemed that this one was called a bit too early seeing as how dragontaser passed it so quickly, and the venetian snare's song still looked more difficult to pass, (and it took longer).
7:14 for some reason i thought "SPIDER PIG," is that ok?
@Whizzer191 this was done the morning after.
Damn Bro,You must have been tired after this song man. But great playin man :)
I'd really, really, REALLY, like to see them try this song with Pro-Drums enabled... X_X That would be awesome...
i would love to see a hands vid for this hahaha
EPIC description
How did you get this in RB2? The custom was made for RB3 and RB3 songs/customs are in different formats than RB2. Converted it?
The Turbo - random chart previews and stuffz It's funny because this video was uploaded before Rock Band 3 was even out lmao.
@DarthDeth rock band 2 audition mode dude
any way to get the mp3, or song?
i always the FTW meant fuck the world then i found out it means for the win, you learn something new every day (:
great great vid dragon :) keep it up
Gotta love those incognito windows ;p
@Paraflash
or is he dancer?
I wanna give this a shot how'd you do it? not like i'll succeed lol.
oh my word that is so easy hang on i am asleep and dreaming i could play that,
anyone know where i can get this song for guitar hero, give it 10 years i may be able to do it lol
rip buddy rich the legend
Sure, the tools did, but it's a bit discrediting to metal drummers to claim that they simply took stuff out of jazz. Double bass was used in jazz, but the way that two bass drums is implemented in modern metal was largely defined by Lars Ulrich and Dave Lombardo in the early 80s. Also, the concept of a blast beat was first given proper form (and time signature) once it was picked up by the earliest Death Metal Bands.
@joenigz he probably does. idk how he could play that if he didn't
0:47 sweet fill brah.
The Swingin' New Big Band version is tortured here with tom fill BR would have never, ever, in a M Years ever play. Well maybe when he was 3 years old on stage with his parents as "Traps The Drum Wonder" - there is a long story about recording this tune - that they did take after take and Buddy was never satisfied with it. The rest of the record that this version (without added tom fills) is on was done live in LA EXCEPT this tune which was done in studio. You can look it up.
+James Fenno hey guy, what is 2:01? You are kinda wrong about the no toms thing so goodbye
can you do channel one suite?
buddy rich aka holyshitinhumanspeed
12 solos LOL! Wow dude great job! :D
how many notes in this song anyway?
8:40 onwards is when buddy rich comes to fuck up your day
@CCBlackhawk aaahhhh I see what you did there.
@azuritereaction lol. there are a lot of notes either way....
you should get challenges and pass songs that people think are basicaly impossible to pass
mercy mercy
