I trained there and loved it from about 1963 to 1965, and have regretted giving up ever since. It was far more than just learning Judo, it was discipline and respect, the attitude of older students was fantastic towards us younger students, and I watch now and see how respectful many young Judoka still are in their Dojo. I was lucky enough to meet up with the Commonwealth Games Team going to Auckland back in the 90s and really enjoyed hearing how the Budokwai was still thriving, and how my old tutors were still doing. A lifetime of memory from two years studying. A wonderful video, alas too short! But Lucy, many thanks for provoking my memories.

Exactly the same time as I was there myself while having the opportunity to train and practice with the very best, such as Tony Sweeney, Sid Hoare, Cliff Nash, Charles Palmer (a larger than life Judo Instructor who used to arrive at the front entrance in his red E-Type Jaguar car) , Brian Jacks, Trevor Leggett, along with many others, and of course, Kisaburo Watanabe who was at the time very much in his prime and an awesome sight to behold whenever he went into action on the mat. No matter what size, height, or shape they might be who would come up against him, he would wipe the mat in spectacular fashion with the lot of them one after another!

Yukio Tani wasn't even a jiudoka, he was from the kodokan's greatest rival, the Handa jiujitsu dojo in Osaka, where Matemone Tanabe was the chief instructor. Prior to settling in London, Koizumi was in Asheville, N.C with Maeda and Akitaro Ono, and where he lost back to back matches against CACC wrestler phelan Beale, whose claim to fame was being jackie kennedy's uncle and his ex-wife and daughter being featured in the Mayles brothers documentary "Grey Gardens"

I trained there in the late 1960s and was on their youth demonstration team. We also did a massive show at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968.

Trained occasionally at the Budokwai late 70s thru to the mid 80s (trained mainly at the Renshudan and Percy Sekine's Dojo - the Judokan)... Was there when Kashiwazaki taught. Great place to train. Nice video.
