  • Here's a review of the HT that I use more than any other. By the end of the video it should be pretty clear what I think the answer to the question in the title is.

    Never will be obsolete.

My FT-60R was my only radio for 11 years. Over time the rubber cover for the power and hand mic fell off. Once I spilled my cup of water on it with the ports exposed. Let it dry out naturally and it still works well to this day. LOVE this radio. Also. As I finally purchased a few more radios, I ask myself why the squelch knob is eliminated and hidden inside the menu on newer yaesu HT radios. WHY Yaesu! Amongst the shiny new radios, my FT60 is still my favorite for its ruggedness and easy of use with its exposed knobs.

I've converted mine to run on 18650s that are USB rechargeable and 3500mAh via a simple print from Thinkiverse. Definitely brings this radio to the next level in that aspect.

I'm a GEN HAM the FT-60 was my first radio, my theory is you can breach muzzle load an FT-60 into a cannon, knock down a big tree. And it well still be there for you when you screw the antenna back on. I'm proud to own a 450D, 857D, and have owned an 818ND. There is a lot of new bells and fouder with Yaesu's new line ups. The FT-60 is the essence of an EDC no gimmick SHTF Ham radio Handi Talk. Thank you for producing this. Not mention you can get a big whip and beat the snot out of an assailant per weight as a make shift billy club. 😛🤣

I started with a UV-5R, and a buddy let me borrow his FT-60r for a week. That's all it took to convince me. The UV5r is great for the price!! However, it's still a $25 radio. I recently put up a dual band JPole and it made my FT-60 a beast at just 5w. There's a reason Yaesu has made this thing for 20 years.

I am a newbie in amateur radio. This radio is the best for ANYONE getting into the hobby. I am a 60 year guy taking my first steps into the hobby. I am so pleased with mine. The Baofeng radios are very good for the price. The ease of programming and the continuous squelch knob. along with a volume knob on the top make it an excellent radio! I am happy to have this as my first amateur radio.

You can't beat the FT-60 for it's excellent front end. It really pulls in the weak signals and rejects close in RF. They are solid as a rock. You will get respect from the guys who know.

A great video and a great radio. The FT60 is the best HT I have ever used.

FT 60 is a brute. Accidentally knocked mine off of a hot water tank onto a concrete floor, a fall of 5 feet. Not a scratch, or any failure whatsoever.

The Baufeng is a cheap radio that works, I own a few. The FT-60 has a far better receiver (among a ton of other things) that makes it more sensitive, more selective, more robust. It will not be plagued by internod when around other radios.

This is one of THE coolest radio reviews Ive ever viewed. You are so passionate about this radio, and I respect anyone who spreads their passion for a topic. I just got my GMRS license (looking for a radio for that) and taking my technicians license at the end of this month. This looks like a solid purchase. I was looking at Wouxun KG-UV9D but you really got me thinking. Might be the best starter radio besides this Baofeng which got me into the ham bug.

FT-60 is a solid, inexpensive, FM ht. Not a lot of frills which I don’t use anyway. Performs great for what I want from an ht.

Have had one since it came out. It still works. Ordered a second one a few years ago. Just ordered my third a couple days ago. Probably will keep that one in the box for a rainy day. Thinking about a fourth! When you find something that works you want to have a few lying around.

Thanks for the review - I own 2 of these myself and was interested all the same to see what you thought of them. One correction though - the 12VDC input

Very relevant and much needed review. I like the no-nonsense delivery - well done! I agree with every point, having owned one for years. The HT would always tip over on the kitchen table, my only complaint…The name of the game for me is the hot receiver and durability which is the primary reasons to own. I like the simplicity of the menu and OS in this generation of Yaesu HTs. This is a no frills performer that you’ll have forever. Surely a testament when they are still being manufactured. 73’s, Brian, K3LX
