  • The psychedelic masterpiece nobody heard.
After a suffering an LSD-induced mental breakdown, Los Angeles-based songwriter Craig Smith renamed himself Maitreya Kali and custom-pressed APACHE-INCA, a double-LP documenting his musical, personal and spiritual journey. His message to the world, encoded on the album jackets in rambling, quasi-mystical Messianic verse, was urgent, desperate, delusional, and disturbing. Recorded between 1967 and 1971, the music tells a different story. Achingly beautiful, haunting acoustic folk songs; luminescent psychedelic folk-rock; eerie, off-kilter acid rock; fragments; field recordings-all meticulously woven into a magical, mesmerizing whole. APACHE-INCA is an extraordinary work. Not the dark, self-indulgent ramblings of a cracked Messiah, but a thoughtfully-crafted collection of work by a singer and songwriter of remarkable depth and talent whose world was falling apart. Soon afterwards Maitreya-and Craig-disappeared into the shadows. He died homeless in a North Hollywood Park in 2012.
Decades after its creation, APACHE-INCA was discovered by collectors and hailed as a psychedelic masterpiece. It is now one of the most revered and sought-after artifacts of the era.

Hey Mike. Just wanted to share some words.
I'm not exactly sure how, but just a couple months ago while browsing music one super late night, I stumbled across the "Apache" album here on UA-cam by Craig aka Maitreya. Wow.
I've always had an interest in psychedelic music and culture, and after I looked more into Craig's story it really resonated with me and fascinated me. His story also devastated me. All that he endured and his lifelong struggle with mental illness is completely heartbreaking. Side note- his song "Waves" is one of the saddest things I've ever heard knowing his story.
I had to buy the book. So, I just ordered myself a copy of Swim Through the Darkness on the ugly things webstore. I might be a random voice on the internet, but I really just wanted to say thanks for all the work you put in to gathering what you could about Craig and I think it's wonderful you gave him some of the exposure he deserved in life with your book. I wish Craig's story had a happier ending but he was a truly gifted guy with a serious musical talent (Not the Freeze is such a jam!) and the fact you brought an otherwise forgotten tale forward is just righteous as hell. Thank you man, and I can't wait to dig into the book.

Hi Derek. Glad that you found Craig's music -- or it found you. I hope the book will give the music even deeper context for you. Thanks for ordering it. I shipped it out yesterday.

I am in no way a psy-rock guy but stumbled across this album while buying other music (ironically tribal african/latin music) and was blown away by this story, that now I wanna purchase the album and your book Mike. I have been researching and reading about Craig for hours now. And yes, this needs to become a full length doc somehow. Filmmakers, where you at??? ;)
