Apache-Inca trailer
The psychedelic masterpiece nobody heard.
After a suffering an LSD-induced mental breakdown, Los Angeles-based songwriter Craig Smith renamed himself Maitreya Kali and custom-pressed APACHE-INCA, a double-LP documenting his musical, personal and spiritual journey. His message to the world, encoded on the album jackets in rambling, quasi-mystical Messianic verse, was urgent, desperate, delusional, and disturbing. Recorded between 1967 and 1971, the music tells a different story. Achingly beautiful, haunting acoustic folk songs; luminescent psychedelic folk-rock; eerie, off-kilter acid rock; fragments; field recordings-all meticulously woven into a magical, mesmerizing whole. APACHE-INCA is an extraordinary work. Not the dark, self-indulgent ramblings of a cracked Messiah, but a thoughtfully-crafted collection of work by a singer and songwriter of remarkable depth and talent whose world was falling apart. Soon afterwards Maitreya-and Craig-disappeared into the shadows. He died homeless in a North Hollywood Park in 2012.
Decades after its creation, APACHE-INCA was discovered by collectors and hailed as a psychedelic masterpiece. It is now one of the most revered and sought-after artifacts of the era.

Craig Smith: A Father's Christmas

Craig Smith recorded this song demo some time between 1966 and 1970. Most likely it was intended for Andy Williams, who had recorded one of Craig's other Christmas songs, "Christmas Holiday," for his best-selling 1965 album MERRY CHRISTMAS. An excerpt from "A Father's Christmas" was included on Craig's self-released APACHE/ INCA double album in 1972 under the title "Jesus Owns." By that time he...

Hoi’ Polloi was an album recorded in 1972 by a group of students at Earlham College in Richmond, who bounced tracks between a couple of two-track Revox machines to create a surprisingly sophisticated progressive pop album that has echoes of solo McCartney, Todd Rundgren, Procol Harum and Traffic. It was pressed in a very limited run by the Custom Fidelity Company based in Los Angeles, CA.

Beautiful sampan boat sails beyond the sea into the Emerald light where we all are free Gods from the ancient past backon form the shore as we move on our way into nothing more Magical sampan boat journeys through the Sun touching the Amber light inside everyone Gem laden palaces treasures that abound sitar and koto play soothing tranquil sound It is so clear where your karma loses fee, peace dwells inside, Down a long hall, you may stumble, you can fall, truth steers this ride Mystical Sam pan boat turns the other way out of the black and void to the light of day eyes open born again, cycle starts anew magical sampan boat flows through me to you

Top notch songwriting and feel here. I can’t get enough of his music. Discovered Craig Smith through peteytwofinger and his acid casualty episodes on UA-cam and thusly found out about Mike Stax. I got myself a copy of “swim through the darkness” and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for keeping the music alive Mr. Stax!

@@mikestax4752 She Brought Me Something Beautiful actually reminds me somewhat of the Pleasures Of The Harbour era Phil Ochs, and only strengthens the curiosity as to what Smith/Kali could’ve achieved with the backing of a top record label and some serious studio time!

Thank you for writing such a heartfelt tribute to Craig Smith and his world. I love feeling emersed in the world I'm reading about and your writing brings mid-to-late 60s Southern California to life. I have a question. The book spells the 4 Sisters' name with a K(Klinger). Everything I've seen in print(YT, Spotify, Wikipedia) spells it with a C(Clinger). Just my curiosity. Thanks again. Frank Carmack
