My family left Portland over a decade ago. It was too much for us then. I can't imagine how much worse it is now if the media is finally taking notice. Portland is a place where criminals have all the protection and rights, and working citizens have NO ONE there to protect their rights and safety.

My brother is going through the same thing in his neighborhood in California. My parents bought that house in 1964 and it was like the neighborhood in The Sandlot. Now there are motorhomes parking in front of the houses and throwing out a piece of astroturf and calling it home. They leave garbage behind or throw it in the sewer drain. The neighbors have banded together and contacted the police who say there is nothing they can do. So heartbreaking.

A piece of paper isn’t likely to end homelessness. It’s the courts. They can’t get money out of these people. They can however arrest a homeowner once they react.
There is an element of truth to that, though. They closed the insane asylums because they were considered cruel, and now they’re “the homeless”. Gavin Newsom, in a rare moment of good sense, floated the idea of having asylums again. Also, it would be helpful to understand homelessness in the sense of distinguishing between the have nots, the can nots, and the will nots. The have nots are down on their luck temporarily and are amenable to assistance. The can nots, disabled and so on, we should help just out of decency. The will nots have the right to live as they please, but not at the expense of the rest of us. Each individual jurisdiction has the choice, but rarely the political will to tell them, “Not in our town.” Until Portland summons the political will to do that, they’ll keep getting what they voted for, good and hard.

Portland used to be such a fun and interesting place. We spent a lot of summers there over the years, Brewfest and Bluesfest at the riverfront park, it was great. We would walk all over the area, enjoy the food, open markets, food trucks, art and music. That all ended around ten years ago, our daughter had enough of the changes and moved her family to be near us in NC and it's great. Her step son still lives in the area but NEVER goes near Portland anymore and is now actively looking for a place here in NC. What's happened to Portland is sad, but very, VERY predictable.

Cities can only handle a base population of homeless. There’s a breaking point in every society no matter who runs it. In 2020 after Black Lives Matter buses and busses of homeless were shipped here from places like Florida Texas Arkansas etc. they paid their homeless 200$ and a free bus ride out, and sent them here. We had homeless before, but it is totally unmanageable now. My brother is going through the same thing in his neighborhood in California. My parents bought that house in 1964 and it was like the neighborhood in The Sandlot. Now there are motorhomes parking in front of the houses and throwing out a piece of astroturf and calling it home. They leave garbage behind or throw it in the sewer drain. The neighbors have banded together and contacted the police who say there is nothing they can do. So heartbreaking.

Portland used to be such a fun and interesting place. We spent a lot of summers there over the years, Brewfest and Bluesfest at the riverfront park, it was great. We would walk all over the area, enjoy the food, open markets, food trucks, art and music. That all ended around ten years ago, our daughter had enough of the changes and moved her family to be near us in NC and it's great. Her step son still lives in the area but NEVER goes near Portland anymore and is now actively looking for a place here in NC.

We need to repeal 110 ASAP. Marketing the idea shouldn’t be difficult. The selling point will literally be, “Go outside and take a look at the streets. Do you think it’s working yet?” After that, we need to enact Involuntary Commitment laws, as in, if you’re a druggie and get arrested, we’re tossing you into treatment and you have ZERO say in the matter.

Every day I'm thankful to my lucky stars that I left my native Portland 30 years ago and now live in Helsinki, Finland, where the local government still has contact with reality. We'll continue to do our camping here out in nature, not on or in front of someone else's property.

In Mariposa California homeless just parked their trailer on these peoples property. He called the sheriff who said there was nothing they could do. He sat and watched until they went to town and burned them out. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
