I met him in osh kosh Wisconsin. He told me the story himself. He only had enough time to take the covers of his intakes and engines. He was shot in the arm or shoulder if I remember. He flew at an altitude of just a couple hundred feet to avoid radar. One of the coolest stories I've ever heard. Nice guy too

Turki here! I remember that day. He flew at almost sea level avoiding radars and landed at Trabzon. That was a civil airport and it was almost dawn, so there weren’t many groubd staff around, so he just left the MIG and sneaked outside the airport just by the road, he took a cab and told the driver to take him to hospital since his arm was imjured. Then he met the officials and asked US asylum which he was sent to Ankara to get to the US consulate. USSR warned Turkiye to return both the pilot and the MIG. Turkiye accepted to return the MIG but not the pilot according to the international law. US asked Turkey to investigate the MIG and not return to the Soviets. Turkiye refuses that but Turkiye investigated the MIG on her own. The MIG was disarmed and sent back flying.

You should cover this story, A Cuban pilot named Orestes Lorenzo got tired of the regime and left in his MIG 23 landing in FL, after that the Cuban dictatorship wouldn’t let his wife and two sons to come to the US and reunite with him, Raul Castro said if he want to see his family he better have the same balls when he took the MIG23 and come pick them up himself, so he did 😅 he managed to put his hands on a Cessna 31 and flew back to cuba to pick up his family, he told the people in FL if you haven’t heard from me in 2 hours is because I’m dead, flying a 3 meters from the water he managed to avoid the coastguard radars, landed in a highway, pickup his family turned around and flew back to the US making a fool of Fidel Castro not only once but twice, amazing story one of if not the best I’ve ever heard

The sad thing is that he would have known that by doing this, he would forever be giving up the opportunity to pilot any military aircraft ever again.
