Ron thanks for watching and for your comment! I'm about to start work on a drum soloing course at jazzdrumschool.com. I already have a dynamite course called The Secrets of Jazz Drumming: jazzdrumschool.com/course/jazz-drumming-lessons In there, I cover many tips about trading fours, eights and soloing on the drums. You might take a look.
You might also take a look at this video here on my UA-cam Channel: Trading Fours Jazz Drums Soloing ua-cam.com/video/6Cq5E0mwMII/v-deo.html

How much tempo variations are present in your materials?

Thanks for watching and for your question! For the Swing drumless tracks it's 110-190 BPM and for the Bossa Nova-Samba drumless tracks it's 85-260 BPM. Here's the link to listen to the tracks: store.vonbaronmusic.com/product/jazz-swing-bossa-nova-samba-trading-fours-and-eights-big-bundle/ Keep swinging my friend 🤙

I notice that you did not feather the bass drum on all four beats in the bar. You seem to be playing lightly on one and three and it doesn't sound like your are producing a two beat style. You are swinging !. I never used to do feather on all four beats because it was not emphasized when I grew up playing drums. Later, it was emphasized over and over to me
by some professional drummers. I have worked on it to keeping it soft when I am feathering. Upper tempos are really difficult ot keep it soft. So, there is cut off tempo that is really difficult to attain. What is your view on all of this ? Thanks. I enjoyed your video.

Personally, I've had great bass players tell not to do because they've got the quarter note. Check out my videos about this if you have some time: ua-cam.com/video/OyBZGzQlMF4/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/Z_mKWJOT-rE/v-deo.html
I think there's definitely a time and place for it like in Big Band drumming, with a Jazz Shuffle beat and when the time is weak in the other players. Other than that I don't do it so much. Instead, yes, I feather that 1 and 3 on the kick and swing the heck out of my hands and hi-hat. Don't really know where that started but I've been doing it a long time and it works great.
When I play fast tempos, I leave out the bass drum except for comping and playing kicks. I know there are some cats are really religious about the 1/4 on the kick but for me it's not all that necessary.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you need some help with your Jazz drumming. I'm here to help. Keep swinging my friend 🤙

UnSurprisingly I was able to groove trading in time where bass was playing but as usual, I rushed when the bass was absent

Thanks Brian for giving it a shot! You're in good company my friend. Many of us including me are challenged by the bass-less fours 🤙
