Modified Tundra Steering Rack install in a 3rd Gen Tacoma

- Hello and welcome, thanks for stoping by. Today I'm installing the Tundra Rack. Overall, it was a long process dealing with the racks. Before you try to get the stock rack out raise the engine. Raising the engine a little will make it easier to remove and install the rack. Make sure to use your stock rack as a template for lining up the bushings, that will give you a decent starting point. You don't have to grind down the bungs, but it will give you a little more room. Pay attention to the high and low pressure lines, make sure they are not pressing up against the frame. I ended up with a solid shaft that was fabbed using the stock intermediate shaft slpine end and joint. Mine measured in at 13.59 inches overall complete length including the splines and joint. Have a good breakfast, it's going to be a long day. Don't rage quite. Steering feels like butter right now.

Both these studs are running Tundra Racks in Tacomas, they wheel way harder than I do. Many thanks for the helpful tips along the way.

Nice install. I put a shortened Land Cruiser 200 in my Fj a while back. That was a lot of work/machining, but was worth the pain I went through.
Also for everyone out there that wants to go this route; Tundra rack or Land Cruiser 200.
You are going to lose some turning radius, and there is no way around that.
I was between the LC 200 or the Tundra rack for a bit. Turning radius is effected. I notice it the most when I pull out of parking spaces.
Yeah I heard the same. Although I “hear” the Tundra rack is a bit less of loss. 🤷♂️
Thank you for making the video and giving the best info you can for the rest of us 🙏🏻
Appreciate it, thank you.
Are you located here in Southern California?
@@LuisSanchez-dw7mt No, I’m in FL.
Sparks flying! Hope the new shaft works!
Thanks for watching.
If you pull the front diff it’s easy to get the rack in and out.
Ya, lifting the engine a 1/4 inch is much easier than pulling the front diff. Thanks for watching.
Couple questions:
1) What's the diameter of your RCVs? I have 934 axles that I'll have to deal with and I wonder how close they are in size.
2) What's the diameter of the rod on your steering shaft. I planned to use 1" DOM and want to make sure it's not too big.
Big thumbs up on the video, I'll probably watch it a dozen times before I tackle the job.
Appreciate it man, thank you.
The 934 axles are larger on the diff side, 4_lo_pro on IG runs the JDFab axles with the tundra rack on a 2nd gen. I have his IG link in the description of the video. He will be able to answer your questions. I believe he had to move the rack forward a little.
The shaft is 3/4 inch. One inch is big for that spot.
Thanks for watching
what ya meant when you said .. "its coming down the shaft for you" is The shaft is coming in after you .. if you hit someone had enough. lol!
jokes aside.. GOOD VID thanks
Thanks, appreciate it.
Hello I would like to pick your brain on a 3rd Tacoma Steering rack.
I’m having an issue when turning and going on inclines/declines
(Pop)
Usually it’s only 1 single pop
Sometimes 2
I have brand new LCAs / UCAs
Running 2.5 kings
I don’t believe it’s suspension related
I will attach video of my steering rack play
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Any time. I'l hit you up on IG.
I'm extremely interested in installing one of these mostly due to the rubber bushing in mine failing so quick. I replaced my entire rack about 5 years ago and now my alignment is always jacked up because of the bushing being weak again. My question is how is the steering feel? Does it beat you considering you replaced the rubber bushing with metal.
My steering feels great, smooth as butter. The only issue I have is the loss of steering radius. It's noticeable in parking lots, tight spaces and when making U turns. I don't notice it every day, but it's there. Have to give it up for strength. Thanks for watching.
Time for a car lift!
I'm so ready for one.
I just watched your video. Do you have to modify the tundra steering rack or can you take a stock tundra steering rack and put it in a Tacoma? I have a 2019 Tacoma with 33s and I feel like I get a lot of feedback from the tires into the steering system. I was looking to upgrade. Just curious if I can just bolt one in, or does it have to be modified and if I can bolt up a stock tundra steering rack? What year tundra should I get one out of?
No, it takes a ton of modification to the rack. THere is a vid floating around of what it takes.
Being that you are stock width, is the mod’d tundra rack machined to accept the stock Inner/ Outter TieRods? I’m in contact w/ basikbiker and want to make this work for stock width as well. Thanks 🤙🏼
Yes, my rack took stock inner tie rods, currently running Moog factory replacements. No issues. My spares are also Moog. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your install. Is that the Toyo- steering rack you using?
I believe it was an 06 or 07, not entirely sure. It's a good idea to reach out to any of the companies offering them now and ask what year they prefer. Thanks for watching.
Can you list the link for the intermediate shaft to buy
Thank you for making videos brother! Question. How is the turning radius compared to stock?
It is a bit less than stock. It’s more noticeable in parking lots and tight spots. Overall not bad.
@@ClassyTacos just put my LT on and my turning radius improved! Need to think about steering upgrades now so I appreciate the info!!
@@RockLander818 any time. Thank you
@@RockLander818your gonna blow your rack seals with to much turning radius need steering stops
By chance would you know someone that could cut my intermediate shaft to length and delete the hollow part
If you're local to Central FL, check with Built by Bruno. He should be able to help. Thanks for watching.
What's up Classy, how's the rack holding up? Any unexpected issues or things to know before doing the modification?
So far it's been great. The only issue is the steering radius is less. The tires turn less sharp, if that makes sense. I notice it the most in parking lots when pulling out of spots as I pull in backwards. Thanks for watching.
Any problems with that rack ???
No issues yet. Less turn radius that will take some getting used too. Thanks for watching.
How is the rack holding up for you?
Solid money so far. Less turn radius but I live with it. Shows up on u turns, parking lots and switch backs. Thanks for watching.
Very nice brother. Thanks for this! Planning on doing this to my 4th Gen 4Runner platform.
Curious besides attempting to lock the steering wheel was or is there a way to line up the intermediate shaft so the steering wheel stays somewhat straight? How did your alignment go after getting it done?
Thanks again! 🙏🤙
It was a bit of both of us. I locked the steering in with the tires straight. There is a little movement on the steering wheel to help align the intermediate shaft. Once it was close it went to the alignment shop they did the rest. Thanks for watching.
Just one question, did you buy a modified tundra rack or just an oem tundra rack and get the machines bushings separately? Currently deciding to do this on my Tacoma and was curious
I installed a modified Tundra rack from Basikbiker. Thanks for watching.
Cool, thanks man! Is there a link for the non-bellowed steering shaft as well? No worries if not!
@@erikdenwalt4801 No links, that was a custom made.
@@ClassyTacosno worries, thanks dude!!
I noticed that you have a front diff spacer? can you explain why?
Thanks
Sure, they help with CV angles. Some people hate them, some love them. Currently I am not running them. Thanks for watching.
Yeah I started reading forums on that topic after watching your video. Thanks for the reply!
@@ClassyTacos
Is this rack specifically meant for long travel or stock works fine?
Works on stock, I'm stock width. For long travel most people go with heim joints and billet TieRods. Thanks for watching.
How did you lift the engine up?
I used a piece of wood on a floor jack wherever you can get a flat spot. Thanks for watching.
@@ClassyTacos man I got a 2nd Gen and the motor mount bolts are such a pita to get to 3 extension and universal joint and a swivel head ratchet one side is loose
Did you have to loosen anything else besides the motor mounts?
@@TabletSnipes just the mounts, you’re only lifting it a little. An inch or less.
@@ClassyTacos I had to loosen the trans mounts as well
Where can order one of those rack from ?
There a bunch out on the market now. Full kits to just the rack. Mine came form Basikbiker on IG. He is the first.
how does it drive with the eccentric bushings?
It drives fine, no issues.
Do you have an updated link to the shorter aftermarket shaft?@@ClassyTacos
I do not, the shorter shaft ended up not working as good as I wanted so no link.
Whoo, first! Lol
Ha, nice.
Oh that kind of rack. 🙄 I'm calling click bate!
What rack were you thinking of?
I was thinking the roof rack when I saw the title, but great video anyway. Sorry, I know you weren’t asking me.
Great videos!
