At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Sarah Michelle not getting even a nomination for the Body is criminal, but Sandra Oh never won anything for Grey’s?!?! That just blatant disrespect.

Thank you for recognizing January Jones and her portrayal of Betty Draper. When the show first aired, I couldn’t believe how often people panned her acting chops on the show. Her arc was very much intended to show the struggle of the perfect housewife who was raised in an exacting societal mould, and the expectation was to merely be the subservient extension of her husband in the pursuit of his success. When she really starts to try and reclaim more of herself later in the show, it’s too late because of her cancer diagnosis. Her storyline was such a quiet tragedy that unfolded over the seasons and I think January Jones did an incredible job of telling that story. She represents a segment of women who were sandwiched in between pre-war roles and the rise of the counterculture in the 60s.

Season 2 is probably her best season. If she was gonna win for any year it would have been that one.

Im of course missing the epsiode this week but thank you for discussing January Jones playing Betty Draper. My grandma is from that time and though i love her she acts so much like Betty Draper whom she shares the same first name. Mad Men helped me understand her a bit more. Its not easy fitting yourself to the standard just to have the world move on. Definitely stunts you emotionally. Thats a character close to me because i feel i can relate so much.

Totally agree about Jones. I was a huge "Mad Men" fan and was always team Betty/January Jones. Betty is not a likeable character, but I never thought Jones got the credit she deserved for so perfectly portraying the unliberated woman of the time, utterly disappointed and bored with the role society told her to fill, but also utterly unable to express what was wrong.

So, to be fair, Sarah Michelle Gellar did receive a (Daytime) Emmy for All My Children. That said, Buffy and her performance also deserved more love. Not only was it disregarded because it was on the WB, but because it was also horror (notoriously underrecognized across all awards shows).

If Buffy had come out today I think she would’ve gotten a well deserved nomination. After all, Tatiana Maslany WON the Emmy for Best Actress for a low budget cable sci fi show

Peggy Olsen didn't have an abortion. She carried the baby she had with Pete to term and gave their son up for adoption. Remember, it was a whole thing where she gained weight, was hospitalised, etc.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was snubbed big time while it was an iconic TV show that should have won several Emmys for its actors :
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Sarah Michelle Gellar)
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Alyson Hannigan, Emma Caulfield)
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (David Boreanaz, James Marsden)
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Eliza Dushku, Juliet Landau, Robia LaMorte)

Hope Lange won two consecutive emmy awards for best lead actress in a comedy series, for playing Mrs Muir on The Ghost & Mrs Muir. A series that ran for 50 episodes - two seasons - and was cancelled twice: After its first season on NBC, and again after its second season on ABC. (1968-1970)

    • @MMT58
      @MMT58 День тому

@@georgegallucci9958 I respectfully disagree. Though I would have voted for Montgomery for the second emmy, Lange deserved her first emmy for the first season of G&MM on NBC in my opinion .Excellent writing and acting. Unfortunately ABC ruined the second season, with poor, juvenile writing.

@@MMT58 Agree to disagree. Part of the problem too was putting Agnes Moorehead in the lead category instead of supporting. Actors pitted against each other from the same show or movie oftentimes don't win.

Funny to hear Ira cal out Julianna Margulies, because it was actually when I heard her interviewed on Keep It years ago that I decided I did not like her at all. She had the energy of your friend's mom in high school who was always friendly and polite to you, but you could still just tell she didn't like you.

it's always interesting to see nominations for actresses from genre shows or popular shows. Ira definitely hit the nail on the head that the Academy themselves don't take those roles seriously, which is a shame because the leads are putting in the work.

What y’all are not bringing up is that once you’re nominated you have to submit an episode for consideration. Episode submissions were even more important in the early 2010s and before. The way they vote now has kinda made episode submissions almost obsolete. But they were really important back in the day. That’s why I can’t be mad about someone like Connie Britton not winning for Friday Night Lights. Neither year did she have the best episode submitted. What’s really irritating is that it took until the fourth season for voters to embrace FNL. Had they been nominating Britton from season 1 on there’s a good chance she would have won one of those years. I could see her getting a win in the future though.

Okay, let's pretend for a moment that this video actually IS talking about the entire history of the Emmys and not just the past three decades, which it appears to be. The fact that Jane Wyman didn't even get a nomination--let alone an Emmy--for her role as Angela Channing on Falcon Crest is nothing short of a blatant travesty!!! At least she was awarded a Golden Globe for the role in 1984.

Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop never getting nominated for Gilmore girls is a standout. The show was perfect for what Emmy voters’ taste were at the time. It had acclaim and the media kept hyping them up for nods. Hell, the academy changed the way voting went just to try to get Lauren in there. It still didn’t work. It became apparent then just how much bias voters had against the WB/UPN/CW. That would also hurt shows like ‘Buffy’, Everybody Hates Chris and Veronica Mars.

Aside from Sarah Michelle Gellar's iconic turn on Buffy, all these under awarded performances are from the 2010's. Is this just due to recency bias, or is that era of TV a particularly great time for women's roles? Or could it be due to TV dramas not having the same staying power in the zeitgeist, since most people are familiar with sitcoms like I Love Lucy in a way they aren't with dramas like Playhouse 90? What memorable women of other eras of TV deserve accolades?

She was dying, but she was still alive at the end of the series. And Peggy didn’t have an abortion. She was in denial about her pregnancy until she was in labor. Mad Men has you in a kerfuffle.
