NEW Sigma 50mm f/1. 4 DG DN Art for Sony E & Leica L: A Quantum Leap Forward in a Competitive Space

- Sigma's purpose-built for mirrorless fast standard prime is smaller, lighter, less expensive, better autofocusing - and quite likely optically superior to the original DSLR version (sorry, I didn't have one to which I could compare it), but the L and E-mount lens ecosystems for which it is designed are far richer than just a few years ago. That little 45mm 2.8 is amazing. This and the 24mm 3.5 are my most used lenses. They are tiny, the build quality is great, and the rendering is surprisingly "interesting". Also razor sharp.
I bought that Sigma 65mm on a whim and it has become my favourite lens. Nice to see it getting some love.
👍🏻😊
For Sony shooters, if one is willing to shop used, that absolutely wonderful Zeiss 55 can easily be found for around $600usd. I picked up mine - in basically perfect shape - for $500, and it's probably the best value proposition among all the lenses I own.
I'm excited to try the Sigma, but so many folks have compared it to the Zeiss I already own that I can't imagine it standing as a replacement for me.
The Samyangs are well made.
Then there's the magical GM 50mm F1.2. My go to street lens. Also the manual focus Voigtlander 65mm F2 which is pretty astonishing.
Experience speaks for itself again, thanks for the summary and comparisons, Hugh. I find that rumor of a Sony 1.4 very interesting given that not too long ago they released the quite excellent 1.2 GM (whopping 2400 euros here in Finland so it is really on another level altogether compared to around 1000 euros for this Sigma one). We'll just have to wait and see...I've also had my eye on that Sigma 65 as I like to keep my lenses as light and small as possible without giving away that much in any quality aspect, especially when traveling. As to those Samyang lenses I own the 35 1.8 as well as the 24 1.8, but not the fifty. In general I'd agree that the build quality leaves something to be desired, but as travel lenses they are pretty decent and that 24 has also that astro side to it that I have not tested yet (that little LED there is a nice touch for focusing purposes). But for that 50 mm focal length there is certainly a lot to pick from and I'm not at all sure I'd like to spend that 2400 euros for the 1.2 GM although I sometimes find myself lusting after one :). And of course it is a bit too hefty for a 50...It is indeed good to have options.
Since I watch your videos I am holding thoughts but often scrolling back to know what thought I need to hold. Now you closed off with a thought to hold. I really love your way of speaking. Of all the reviews popping up in my timeline your the first to watch! Thank you for your content!
😉🖖🏻
Great video as always, best practical and technical breakdowns. Thank you
😊🙏🏻🖖🏻
Hugh, as always, your videos are superb! First-class, thank you!
Thank you! 😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP My pleasure :)
Love my Sigma 65mm f2 on my a7rii. It's a bit of an unsung hero. Great video.
I am a SlL2-S user and I will keep my Panasonic 50mm 1.8 for now. Thanks for the video!
I shoot the 65mm f2. What's important to me is rendering/characteristics of a lens. "How can this lens help me differentiate my work from others?" At some point sharpness, CA (correctable) flaring, breathing etc is negligible for posting to social. More important is if you're printing obviously. I used to shoot the older DSLR art 50mm and loved it. Great lens but big and heavy. Speaking of the 65mm f2 - the only thing for me is that I thought I wouldn't find the 65mm focal length that much different to 50mm but I do. It's just a little too tight and not as flexible as a 50mm. It's fine for straight up portraits but if you want anything landscape I find myself having to step back a lot (street).
Such a great video! Appreciate the review!
And we appreciate YOU! 🖖🏻👍🏻😊
I bought the Sigma Art lens, it has a bit too much CA but with a bit of work it goes away mostly, and that's worth it for the money you're saving by getting it than the new sony 50mm 1.4. I've used it quite a bit since I got it a week ago
I’ll be buying this for my Sr1.
I have the Panasonic 50mm 1:1.8S on the front of my SL2-S. As sharp as anyone ever needs even from wide open. Do I ever need the extra 2/3 stop? No. Never mind that it’s so relatively inexpensive: it’s also a light as a feather. Size (and weight) matters. These lenses are already way sharper than say a Nikkor MF equivalent from the 80s, and in 99/100 situations that was sharp enough, too. Who wants to drag a ton of kit about? Go Sigma 28-70 1:2.8 if you’re OK with the built-in lens profile correcting the ton of distortion in post; then go Panasonic S lenses for your primes, which have next to no distortion. Then, to paraphrase Arthur Fellig, f/8 (if you wish) and be there; but particularly, be there. I shoot mainly 120 film these days on Mamiya-Sekor, Rokkor and Zeiss Planar lenses. They were sharp enough, too !
👍🏻😊💯
Great video! I feel like this lens makes much more sense for Sony mount. I recently switched from Sony to Leica SL2-S. On my sony system I was eagerly waiting for this lens. I didn't want to spend the money for the 1.2 or be forced to use the tighter 55 of the zeiss. Now that I'm Leica, I'm happy with the light, sharp, and affordable Lumix 50 1.8.
Lovely and well done review. If I didn't already have the Zeiss 55mm, I might jump on this. But I do, so I won't.
I look forward to seeing/hearing your opinion on the 2 "new" Leica lenses that became available today. And how they compare as rebranded Panasonic lenses in the Leica universe. 🤔
Hugh, I won't lie, the lens is sharp enough that I kept wondering why your glasses looked like they needed cleaning.
The lens is so sharp that you’re looking at the streaks after I DID clean my glasses! 😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP got to get some glasses to wear when cleaning your glasses 🤓 But who shaves the barber?
😜👍🏻
as alway, thanks for the effort and sharing. i am a fan of the Sony 55/1.8 on my A7r3. that lens has both character and speed. i use it for events, street and even looser portraits. though, i have been very tempted to take the sigma 65/2 out for a spin! i also want to offer a shout out-i thought the image (2:54) of the DC reflection pool from the lower steps of the Lincoln Memorial with folks scattered about really shows the power of black and white while creating a very appealing image. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
Nice to see you here again - it has been awhile. 😊🖖🏻
Now Leica released the new summicron 50 &35 for the sl wich are cheap to
I'm a novice with a Sony A74 that enjoys buying a bit of glass. The Sony 55 1.8 I still enjoy a lot, also have the Sigma 24-70 Art (Thanks to you) and some g masters. However, I just purchased a used Sigma FP L !!!! I wanted a point and shoot but found this for $1700. I hike a bid and mainly shoot landscape. I wanted something smaller so I will carry it more. I am wondering if the I series lenses hod up on 61mp sensor. Also, is their one any sharper than the other? I'm still considering the Sigma 50 1.4 Art. However, I want to keep things compact and struggling a bit. Thank you for the informative and very enjoyable videos.
I own the Samyang, shoot on Sony A7 system.
No issues with image quality. LOCA seems about the same. Autofocus is a bit rough. If Sigma had better LOCA I’d consider switching but as a hobbyist I’m happy enough with the Samyang.
Thank you, Zak!
Thx for the well differentiated discussion of the lens and its alternatives! My dilemma currently is a bit different, let me explain although you might not care: I am an amateur photographer and currently looking to replace my old Canon 6D. I love sharpness, resolution, low chromatic aberrations and most importantly, image character - hold that thought. Everything that I would consider a replacement and step-up is so expensive, there aren't many alternatives for ambitious amateurs. Leica M11, Leica SL2, Sony A7R V, HaBla X2D 100, Fuji GFX100s, Canon R5 Mark II (upcoming), may all be nice cameras but I am not willing to spend so much money on a camera and lenses. Where are the alternatives for us amateurs? Like the Canon 6D was an alt. to the Canon 5D IV back in the day? Until I made up my mind you will find me taking B&W pictures on film with my M3, M4 or 503cx and enjoy the quality and character of the resulting images.
Take a look at the new Panasonic LUMIX S5 II - or consider picking up a used Lumix S1R - with Sigma primes (or their 24-78/2.8 DG DN Art). Also look at the Nikon Z6 II or Z7 II with their Nikon Z 1.8 S primes.
@@3BMEP yes, indeed, the Nikon Z7 II caught my attention as well.
... and Canon announces the R8 which ticks a lot of boxes.
@@klausmoritzpeitzsch690 yet does not address the paucity of appropriate lenses for it. Sigh.
@@3BMEP yes, that 3rd party lens ban really bothers me. And I am not sure if Canon made a wise decision here.
It really depends on what one is photographing & the FL. I have both the sigma 45 & 65. I also had the samyang 45mmf1.8 (tiny series). The sigma 45 has an unusual rendering because of its very close mfd & the 65 is a very interesting focal length. I use it a lot for detail work on the sony r4. The samyang is a very discrete lens & because of its tiny size & weight also a joy to use. The modern sensors are so light sensitive that I don't feel the need for faster & heavier lenses. There is a certain fetish with thin DOF rather than understanding dof, fl - mfd - magnification & composition. I think that the new sigma is a worthy addition to the field but for my work I prefer the light size & also the rendering of the above lenses.
Agree on the 45mm. Different purpose then a f/1.4 50mm from Sigma. The developed it for that rendering.
It would have been nice if Panasonic made the 50mm f1. 8 with a more premium feel for a couple of hundred dollars more. The current one is fantastic but just feels cheap.
And if Canon weren’t so protective/restrictive we Canon users might have been able to savour this Sigma gem.
Just so.
Protectionism at its worst. Hook you in with the cameras and then you are stuck with a limited and over priced lens range
@@SamandSteve bingo
This or the 35? Already have an 85 and 28_75 2.8
This is in summary, why I hate going to greek diners. Too many options on the menu, and no idea where to start in order to feel satiated.
Hey my friend, nice to see your review here.
Just got my second hand 50 Summilux SL… for a great price but this review is still interesting for me.
I see these green and magenta coloration…. I hate them and that’s the reason why I waited and waited until I find my 50 Summilux sample.
The competition in L Mount :
The Lumix 50 1,4 is great but so big and external shape is ugly.
The Leica Lux 50mm has such an appealing external design compared to its Lumix sibling.
The Lumix 1.8 has far more magenta and green colors on contrast areas
Sigma 45 has nothing to compare with the new 50… according to me.
The new Summicron SL, non APO may be a real competition thought it’s a f/2
The APO is of course a reference but that perfect that it may be annoying !!!
The 65 is already a 65 and looses versatility.
But at the end it’s the result that counts and the use we do of our gear.
Your pics are superb. In black and white we don’t see any purple fringes… 😊
Didier! It has GM been awhile. Tell me about the ‘lux SL 50!
@@3BMEP
Yeah a long ago!
I had the Lux 50 once
Sold it because of a financial reason
Check my video about my « au revoir » to my first SL LUX 50 on my channel. You will see some pictures.
Sold the APO CRON 90 also, my god…
Now I’m better and just got a Lux 50 again…
I will do another review as soon as I go out and shoot
It’s bad weather for the moment…
Cheers
Please Sigma, give us either a 50/2.0 DG DN with image quality on par with the 65/2.0, but less weight or a 40/2.0 DG DN which is better performing than the 45/2.8 and maximum same size and weight.
Hugh, love your takes on all topics regarding photography and this gear related one is no exception as it offers a critical perspective. I am a Sony shooter and was waiting for that Sigma 50mm release and am indeed torn between that one and the Zeiss 55mm. Do you have first hand experience with the Zeiss 55mm and can you say anything regarding its supposedly atrocious longitudinal CA? From your review it seems the Sigma suffers from it as well albeit not at the same level as various shots I've seen from different reviews of the Zeiss.Cheers, Vik
It has been too long since I’ve had the 55/1.8 in hand - I just don’t recall. But Sony HAS struggled with CA for many years, true enough. Then again, they’ve gotten better.
@@3BMEP Thanks Hugh for the reply. I guess I'll see if I can test out both at the store.
It is interesting how black and white instantly makes a photograph "artistic".
Ive noticed dramatically LESS chromatic abboration on the Panasonic 50mm F1.8 vs Sigma options. I'd love for you to retake some of those samples that the Sigma showed insane CA, and see if you can recreate that on the Panasonic. I truly dont think you would see that. The Sigma now has horrible performance on that. Its honestly inexusable. Im going to stick with other Sigma options and not trust these newer ones until they get the distortion under control too.
Why do Sigma continue to build lenses like bricks .. its far too heavy the samyang equivalent is over 200g lighter
Dear Hugh, As always a fulsome review! Thank you. A question for you in a “money not the issue”situation I have the opportunity to pick up a Leica 50mm f2 APO for £2k (some small nicks on the paint nothing major) or get the Sigma 50 f1.2 new. It will go on my new SL2-S. What would you do?…..! Bests Ken
An APO 50 for £2K fell off the back of a truck. If you mean the Sigma 50/1.4 DG DN Art - I’d get that. Money may be no object, but ethics matter.
Get it., sometimes something that is too good to be true is too good to be true 😮oh god ethics and sharp lenses….went for a sigma 24/70 with a bit of damage for £710 ethics sorted xxx thanks Hugh.
Footnote on the Apo it’s back on the radar! Turns out the guy selling it is a very eccentric English dude who has quite a following for his musings on Leica cameras. Very funny writer and not the hood we thought he might be. I am travelling next week to his place on the south coast to test it/pick it up. Marvellous! MPB have quoted me 1650 to take it so it’s a no brainer at 1925 a v small mark up on the trade price. Faith restored
Sitting here with my fancy canon r6mii wishing I could afford another lens but dont want to borrow against my retirement🤣
So many new toys to talk about.
All the major companies bringing out new gear.
Hold on to your bank account.
Oh, Viltrox 75mm f1.2 Pro. available from Park Cameras UK on pre-order £449.
Fuji only at the moment.
Different strokes for different folks.
Be lucky stay safe.
Viltrox 75/1.2? Hold that thought. 😉
My current fantasy is to have unlimited discretionary funds and go Leica shopping with you....
😜😉💯
I would take the Summicron 50 still
Money no object? So would I!
Me too
👍
Why can't we have nice things, Mr. Brownstone?
As the owner of both the 35mm f2 and 65mm f2 I am EXTREMELY disappointed that this lens has no aperture ring and seems to be such a poor performer. Sigma - you had one job...
It DOES have an aperture ring!
@@3BMEP OH shoot - I was doing my dishes and must've missed something. Nevertheless, the CA is nothing short of abhorrent.
