Funny thing is that if China declared that they were annexing Vancouver and it is now a Chinese colony, that would be cause for war and international sanctions. Instead, if they just encourage millions of Chinese to move into Vancouver and use their massive influence to help get a pro-immigration official elected in Canada, they get the same result but nobody is allowed to protest. This is the new way to build empires, not with ships and guns, but with colonists and paid-for politicians.

@@Mo-ig4kp Its already happened. China is rapidly colonizing Africa, Tibet, the UK, Canada, Australia, and the US, and they try to influence the political parties of the target countries to help promote the open border policies that allow it. Once Chinese reach critical mass in a locality, they replace all the politicians with Chinese as well because Chinese people know to vote for Chinese officials. Its a new form of "soft invasion", and works particularly well in countries that are either very poor and corrupt and easily bribed (Africa) and on wealthy but self-loathing "baizuo" that are afraid of being called racist for even recognizing the invasion.

@@BoopSnoot Lol dude, I am pretty sure you are not gonna think in this way if you really know chinese, generally there are 2 kinds of chinese in Canada, some are just for university, other chinese want PR or Canadian passort. Type A leave Canada immediately after they graduate from university, usually these people prefer to live in China, they basically does nothing to Canadian society but paying triple tution fee for same education as local people. Type B is people who has strong motivation to leave China forever, they usually prefer Canadian lifestyle, and there is a good chance they have different political idea to CCP, they don't agree or appreciate CCP's way for most of the time, and that is the majority of regular Chinese immigrant you can see here, ask some chinese immigrants yourself and you are gonna know. Plus, many of you western people don't know, if you have loads of asset in China, it is hard as hell to move it to another country because there are bunch of limitation from government, CCP actually does not encourage people to immigrant to other country.

As someone who lives across the river, I feel the need to say that people outside of Richmond all think most of the residents are assholes. You didn’t get to see it but most of the people live in the west end for the big houses and thus are all rich jerks. The people who live and work in and around the malls are normal but honestly normal Vancouver is already so Asian that if you want authentic Chinese just walk 10 blocks in any direction and you’ll find it.

I'm CBC, born and raised in Vancouver. I know...a lot of people who first meet me, say "wow, I'm able to meet someone who's actually born here" :-). The high school that I went to was very diverse. Mainly, it had a lot of Native Indigenous people and Vietnamese. It also had Chinese, East Indians, Latinos, Phillipinos, Japanese, Korean, Fijians, Persians, white people of Hungarian descent, Polish, British, etc. What's great about it was that it was "normal". I guess that it was becuz that we were kids who never experienced anything different. No one thought much about it. Not to say that my school was nice nor perfect, becuz it wasn't. It's just that the issue of race was never an issue/topic. It had a lot of other problems, but that's another topic. Anyway, in French class, the French teacher quite often delivered an anti-England undertone. The textbook that she made us read from compared England to France (with English being subpar/underdeveloped). I had friends who were Vietnamese, Native, Fijian, White (British, Hungarian, etc), Filipino, Chinese, Persian, etc. And this diversity was just as normal as being in cliques less diverse, ie all East Indian, Chinese, White, etc. But the point is that whether your friends were the same race or different raced, it was all normal. No one thought much about it. Guess that we had other "real" issue/problems to deal with :-)

Chinese people from my experience in Canada are significantly more exclusionary than other ethnicities, they only take care of and socialize with their own, even if you speak english and try to be friends. The only ethnicity/race they look up to are white people. The housing crises came in to being because of all the money from Hong Kong and chinese obsession with buying real estate. I've known chinese coworkers with 20+ properties in their 20s.

The Chinese name of Richmond's Aberdeen Mall matches the Hong Kong name. But the connection to the Scottish city of Aberdeen is maintained because Robbie Burns Day (January 25) is near the Chinese New Year (depending on the year).

White guy who moved here almost 3 years ago. I knew it was super asian, so I wont go into that. But compared to all the neighboring BC cities. I LOVE richmond. Not just the food but the people are friendlier than vancouver and surrey, I can leave something in public and walk away and it will still be there hours or even a day later. In vancouver stuff gets jacked in seconds even if its literally bolted into the concrete!
The buildings are not so uniform and boring but fun to look at, and there are trees and flowers all along the streets, even no.3 road looks nice. Parking is mostly free, prices are lower than other places in BC. Its just great.
I agree about the food though, so many places I wanna eat at but Im too broke to eat out often qq. Pretty much every place I try though I love. Oh yeah, even the doctors are fast. In the rest of canada I always have to wait forever to see a doctor but in richmond they are wayy faster. I honestly cant express how much I feel like I won the "move to" lottery after 3 years.
I think you should make another video focusing on the non-asian aspects of the city too. I like the asian influences but the city still has so many cool features.
IMO its the most Canadian city in the lower mainland despite its major ethnicity being overseas.

If I ever moved away from Vancouver its one of the parts of the city I would miss the most. It seems like there are always different and interesting things there that make other suburban parts of Vancouver feel kind of dull and boring in comparison. A reasonable percentage of my friends are Chinese or from other Asian backgrounds and they have often been some of my best friends, and while I have never learned Chinese I have learned quite a bit of Japanese which makes it fun for me to go to places like e-spot or karaoke or even just walking around Asian specialty stores to use some of the Japanese I've learned and more recently see things that bring back memories of places I have traveled.

I was in Vancouver in 1972, it appears Chinese fled Hong Kong after the British lease ended. How many Chinese in Canada have given up their Chinese citizenship? How many other immigrants in Canada are Dual Citizens? I would be interested in seeing that data.

    • @CrimsonEclipse
      @CrimsonEclipse 3 роки тому +1

Well if they are from Mainland China they are technically not allow to have dual citizenship since the Chinese government doesn't allow it. But if from HK they have what is considered permanent residency Status in HK even if they don't currently live in HK. It's almost like a citizenship status for HKers. It could also act like a dual status. Like HKers who gets citizenship oversea could get 2 passports.

Awesome video Jensen! You're a natural and love the editing style. My wife and I came across this video because we live in the US and looking at what it's like to be in a multicultural place where you can be accepted as yourself. As you may have seen, racism is rampant in the US now because of Covid-19. I love the way you summed it up at the end. I used to live in Canada and am a citizen myself and very proud to be one because of the attitudes shown in this video. Keep it up, it gives great hope for minorities!

I've also been told that Richmond has good feng-shui in that the city has been known as the "pearl in the dragon's mouth". Have a look at a wide-area satellite of Metro Vancouver and you'll immediately know what I mean.

I Chinese but has lived in Richmond since 2008. I've noticed that some of the older folks who aren't Asian sometimes think Cantonese is Mandarin since people from Guangdong and Hong Kong were the first to immigrate to Richmond from China so Canto was the more common dialect. Now, more people from Northern China are moving here so Mando is now the more common language. There was also a Japanese community that lived in Steveston that mainly worked in the fishing industry pre WW2 but were mostly deported due to the pearl harbour bombings. However, there is still a small Japanese community living there today in that same area. There is also a village called Finn Slough with about 30 residents of Finnish fishers who moved here in the 60s that live in stilt houses.

In 100 years Canada will be a true multi ethnic country. There's no such thing as a "true" Canadian right now because the country is so young. It's ethicity, culture, and identity are still being crafted as we speak.
