Thank you Deven for your honest and through opinions on all the products that you test.💙🐟
I agree. Had 2 MP10 get blasted with Kalk a few times to finally seize up and break the Teflon coating off the driveshaft
100% agree Deven in regards to the powerheads. You pay for quality and I have been running the MP40 & 60’s for awhile now. Like anything else you need to maintain them for optimal performance. I have a couple wet sides on hand to swap out when I’m doing maintenance. 😊
Some good tips for people out there. 👌
Good review, it's nice to see "long-term" review's.
Personally, I've had an MP40 for two years and I love these pumps. Hot-swapping wet sides is great and no cords in the tank is what made these famous.
There flow settings are also superb. I greatly adore both the Reef Crest and Tidal Swell settings the most, and would argue Tidal Swell is a tad underappreciated in the hobby.
Reefcrest is my go to. I should play with tidal swell more . Going yo try and do more long term ones. More useful then the standard one month ones!
I have had two in the last six months where the ceramic broke off of the steel shaft.
I have had Vortechs for 8 years and the original ones were used and I had them for six years
I must say I am running Nero's and MP in my tank. Those MP are so silent, I had an issue with wet side brand new on one of them. The quickness of the team of Mobius and the distributor was really quick. Ecotech Marine to me has 100% confidence. You know you can trust your reef with their gear.
I like these way better than the old school white ones. Great Video
Thats is next on my list to purchase. I with you on the Gyres. They give massive flow, but it takes hours to clean once a month!
Yep! Love the flow Just not the maintenance they require to maintain it… if only we had a wireless version like a vortech 🤔
@@ReefDudes Ecotech need to get busy on a design. Lol
Great. Is important, fix the dry module, very, very important, is heavy and broke very easy, if fal in the floor. the inside clip that clamp the motor. Is easy to fal on floor, whitout the wet modul magnetic.
Hey dev you are the best at what you do man, I run 2 mp 40s and 1 red Sea gyer for surface agitator set up is flawless with the 2 on one side pushing water on the side with the gyer. Just want to add can you do a review on rpm reef salt
Thanks! And Sounds like a sweet setup! I have not seen RPM locally so haven’t had a chance to try it
I've run many different types of wave makers over the past 10+ years but recently splashed out on 2 x MP40s about 1.5 years ago as the lack of wires in the tank have always been a big sell to me. Been mostly happy with the units themselves but one is louder than the other (sent it back to the local distributor at my own cost to get checked but they said there was nothing wrong with it). However I have had nothing but issues with mobius connectivity, contacted support multiple times and done more factory resets than I can count. I've had my radions randomly turn on in the middle of the night and it's pretty rare that I can connect to all devices without issue. It is just rubbish for the price. To add to it with the recent price rises on ecotech products in Australia they're just pricing themselves out of the market. It's now ~$750 AUD for an MP40. That's just far too much. Between Mobius and the prices I'm afraid I won't be buying any more.
As I person who threw away 18 Jebao pp, Sw powerheads before switching I wish I switched way sooner! I have mp60 on my tank that are 5 years old
Love to hear the longevity!
Well my mp40 wet side cages always fall off into my tank leaving the impeller exposed luckily no accidents but other than that it's the only annoying thing about them I also purchased new O rings for the wet side to see if that would help but no .time to time it happens.
I really hope the MP60s I have on the way hold up better than the MP40s I had a couple years ago. The concept of the Vortech is the best on the market without a question. Their patent has been an innovation killer though and needs to expire for good.
With that said, back in 2011 I ran 6 MP10s (some brand new, some used) and never had an issue with any of them. The used pumps were the old style controller they originally came with. They were very well made.
The MP40s I had recently were a totally different feel and just cheap. 4 failed wetsides and 1 failed dryside in less than a year. So back to Tunze I went and their reliability is hands down the best in the business IMO.
However, getting flow right in a 6*3 peninsula has been a nightmare. Ryan from BRS and Deven both said MP60s and be done. So, a mortgage payment later here we go lol
Did you get the 60s rolling?! Will be magic for your 6’er
great video, it seems close to what I am looking for. should I get only two for my 500-gallon tank? its about 3 feet deep.
What about the rest of the dimensions? What type of coral ?
@@ReefDudes 3 x 3 x 8
@@ReefDudes no corals as of yet just 4 fish and some bottom Dwellers. At some point adding an anemone
Hello I was thinking getting MP10 for rear of my tank have AC dead spot it’s a 44 gallon pentagon style. Currently running two Sicci voyager 2000 pumps but back of tank keeps collecting all the junk.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks
i have a mp10 with a blue box driver, there is no where on the interenet at least from my search of what the colors mean for the blue box driver mp10
Hey Devin i have two older non quiet drive mp40's do you know if the quiet drive wet sides work with the older dry sides? I couldn't find anything saying if they are compatible or not. thanks!
I believe so!
I had my 2 MP40 wet side magnets swell up after I shut my tank down for a few months before I moved. I assumed after that, that they always need to be kept wet or the magnets would fail.
Is there anything unusual that you do during or after cleaning to get them ready to be stored?
Being dry shoudl make 0 difference. _( i have spares i swap out when i clean them. so always some in/out of water) The most common thing i see is them getting dropped which can crack the housing and slowly let water seep in and react with the magnet.
What flow settings do you use on your MP 60s? Are they set for constant flow for 24 hours and at what intensity?
Reefcrest so somewhat random 75-80%
I’m have same tank dimensions as yours and plan it to be a Sps dominated tank, are 2 mp 60 enough to meet the flow they require?
so far so good for my tank.
Just got the mp10 and its making so much noise! have been rotating the wet side and adjusting it but still making noise! anything I can do to fix it?
Sounds like it’s not aligned properly. Turn it off and align with your hands. When lined up you should be able to easily the impeller with your finger and feel it spin the outside motor. Can’t really do it by sight as water refraction messes with your perception of alignment so need to do it by feel. Smooth impeller is key
My new mp10 wet side failed after 8 weeks. Poorly manufactured. Tired of replacing wetsides.
Great Pumps but I find their wet sides to be the weak point. If you don't keep up with maintenance it can be very difficult to get the impeller/magnet side apart from the base. The plastic is cheap and very easy to break. The clips that hold the face plate on are also fragile. I have a MP40 and 2 MP10s and do like them but the wet could do with an update in my opinion.
I use tweezers or a butter knife to pop up the tabs for cleaning. Works well
@@ReefDudes That’s exactly what I use as well to pop the tabs open. Haven’t had one break on me yet.
@@ReefDudes I hear what you are saying but when you see the quality of the rest of the item and the fact we are paying a premium for them I think a better design could be used
What is the max speed you have setup on your MP60s? Are they loud?
they are quiet considering how big they were (took a bit to break them in but they became super quiet!) i slowly worked them up over time.. I believe they are up to around 75% ish now
I noticed you don’t put the foam cover on your power heads. Should I ditch them?
Imo to much work to clean them so I never used them :). As long as you don’t have any tiny weak fish you should be good
@@ReefDudes Great, thanks dude
should also mention that ecotech customer service will replace the rusted wetsides for free too. I must have replaced 4 wetsides already from them without any issues
and that's a common issue with the wetsides... that people need to check when buying used vortechs. wouldve been nice to show ppl how easy it is to check.
Future video :). Don’t have any rusty ones to show
Wish I had know that before replacing two!
I find mine to be noisy. I broke them in. I have cleaned the monthly and they still are noisy like chatter. I've tried many times moving them and the noise doesn't go away. This is on my 2 mp10qd a d my mp40qd
Sounds like it’s not aligned fully. Turn off the pump. You should be able to easily spin the impeller with your finger. If it’s not smooth it means it’s not aligned perfectly.
@@ReefDudes they seem to spin freely but maybe not aligned right but I've been trying for 2-3 months
@@ReefDudes I've had them about 6 months. I took them out the tank for a month because of the chatter
if you haven't tried this already, try having the cord coming out of the dry side motor going straight up, not down or side ways and see if that helps. you can also rotate the wet side around in 1/4 turns at time once it attached on the side of the tank and see if you can get it aligned better, hope this helps, have a good one
@@jamesgillum2382 I'll try. They have been a pain for me. If I didn't buy them and had them stored before I set my tank up I probably would have sent them back.
Whats ur citric acid soak recipe?
I Just randomly dump some into warm water Can’t say I have ever measured it
Don’t your videos usually start by saying powdered by eco tech? Are only those videos sponsored? Or do u get deals on equipment?
I’m sponsored by brs and brightwell. Not ecotech. In the past year or two I have beta tested some products for them like the versas and some mobious features though :) That being said i would love it if they became an official sponsor!
@@ReefDudes I think he is mixing ReefDudes with either ReefBum or ReefBuilders
I have an MP40 that is so old that it has the original white control box.
Love it! Still going strong? I have one of the old white box controllers in my shed somewhere. A blue one too!
Ridiculous they don’t sell parts. The shaft for the propeller breaks easily, the cage breaks easily with cleaning. They should at least offer better warranty, sell parts, provide different flow cages.
MP10 wetsides are terrible. Keep failing and expensive to replace. My last wetside lasted 8 weeks. Poorly manufactured product. I keep getting drawn in to replace failing wetsides. No more. The port on the control box for the battery back up is so poor quality that if you accidentally touch the wire connection is lost. Then there are the return pump problems. Again lifespan is very short.
By far the best pump on the market. You get what you pay for.
100% agree
100% disagree. MP10 wetsides are have short lifespan. They are a poorly designed and manufactured product.
@@kevinw7044 I've used multiple MP10s for years now with absolutely no issues.
Ecotech has too much of a reef tax for me
Most over price garbage
