TWO Note Taking Tricks for Apple Notes (Shortcuts GPS Location Data)

- In this video, I show you two tricks for note-taking on iPhones that will help you take faster, more discreet, and more detailed notes... and with GPS location data attached to them. You just need an iPhone, and two pre-installed Apple apps: Apple Shortcuts and Apple Notes.
In addition to learning how to quickly create and open a note pre-loaded with detailed GPS location data, you will learn my technique for "writing" over 150 words a minute without typing on your smartphone.
My method is perfect for writers, journalists, researchers, creators, field techs, spies, or anyone else who needs to take detailed and discreet notes with specific location/gps data attached to them. This is a real productivity boost.

Glad it was helpful. Let me know how it works for you. If it is too slow appending the information to the note, try reducing the location precision. That may speed things up.

The shortcut does remove some friction. And you don’t need location data and all that stuff in there either, if that makes it even easier. Let me know if this works for you.

But I have a question
1- When I transfer the note from the iPhone to the Galaxy, does the Galaxy accept it and put it in the correct place, i.e. in this program that I reviewed
I'm not sure I understand this question. This shortcut is only for iPhones. You might be able to find a way to transfer or export your notes to another program or device, but you'll need to figure it out. I can't help with that. Sorry.

Thanks. It pops up if you’re watching on the YT app (mobile) or the YT website (desktop). If you’re watching via the YT website on a mobile browser, it might not appear.
Thanks for this. I've put it on my phone and will give it a try. I quite often travel to places where I turn my data roaming off; I take it some of the information won't be recorded in those circumstances?
I just tested it. The GPS location coordinates (Long, Lat, Alt) will 100% work without data roaming, but weather info will not work without data! In that case, remove the weather data points you don't need/want from the shortcut... so it will only fetch GPS data.

I've tried formatting the date but it doesn't seem to affect the note title. Which step would I possibly be missing if I want the note to be titled: yyyyMMdd - EEE - HH:mm z
Just replied to you in threads. Changing the date format should change the note title, as you’re creating a note with the formatted date in another step if that note doesn’t already exist. Try deleting the notes, closing the apps, and running the shortcut again.
Just tested it on my end and is working fine. You might want to try restarting the apps or deleting the old file. And download the shortcut again. Maybe you accidentally changed something.

I use Apple Notes more and more as alternative for Evernote that I used for 9 years.
Problem with Apple Notes: once you created a note with photos, you can't change the size of the photos as you wish. They are all (too) small or large. When they are large the note is very long when you print it. I would like to have the possibility (like in other note taking apps) to change the size as I wish. Do you know (as a photographer) the solution for that question?
You’re welcome. Hope you sorted out that error too (your original comment disappeared). Unfortunately I don’t have a solution for your image sizing issue. But I’m curious to know what your use-case is. Are you using Notes as your primary writing/formatting software?

I have been using Evernote for 9 years; I have now more than 8,600 notes. (a lot of them became 'dead notes')
I am very satisfied, especially in the early years.
Back then the program was even simpler than it is now, but the latest adjustments are not necessary for me (tasks, agenda...).
Something that was interesting (projecting a note as a slideshow) has unfortunately disappeared.
Positive at Evernote (EN):
- strong search function (including OCR)
- all types of attachments possible (photo, pdf, video, audio...)
- own EN e-mail address to which important e-mails can be forwarded
- powerful web clipper: texts from web pages are smoothly converted into a note, without advertising or other side articles
- organizing by tags possible from the start
- reasonable compensation for the paid version (now about $ 60/year for a personal account with more possibilities than a free account)
Negative at EN:
- EN is in private hands, which is why it has been said that it will go bankrupt sooner or later
- a lot of rumors lately about rising subscription prices
Alternatives I have tried:
- Google Keep: free but very basic (no text formatting, no PDFs to add, note must first be saved as a pdf before printing...)
- Notion: too complex for an ordinary citizen; note must first be saved to a pdf before it can be printed...
- Nimbus note and Walling app: good but free account contains few testing options
- AirSend and Trello: good planners but not real note taking apps
- UpNote: Best alternative to Evernote, ridiculously cheap ($20 for a lifetime subscription) but no OCR
And then I got to know Apple Notes, which after a few upgrades comes close to Evernote.
It's just a pity that the photos in a note can all be large or small, so there are no in-between options.
I don't understand why Apple hasn't made that possible yet.
The small images are too small and the large ones too large to print.
Tags are not possible in my desktop version, which is not good for me, because I like to organize/search by tag.
Forwarding important emails is possible via a detour (first create a PDF from an email and then save it into AN)
Web clipper not possible, but sharing a web page and saving it in Apple Notes is quite OK.
The fact that the app is free and comes from Apple offers a lot of peace of mind. No bankruptcy to fear...
So I now use 3 apps together: Evernote in general, UpNote for my travels (everything nice together + making photos smaller possible) and Apple Notes currently as a backup of Evernote. Perhaps Evernote can gradually disappear for me in this way, although I am satisfied with it.
Hey Christian saw your comment on switching to Apple Notes to Evernote - I was thinking of doing the same thing but I have 1000s of Evernote notes so scared of making the same move and wondered how you imported them?

It would probably b annoying, but Maybe you could insert the photos as like links? Throughout the note? I know I’ve seen something called an iCloud photo link option pop up, but I don’t rly know how they work, but maybe there’s a way to like attach 2-3 photos to one icloud link(?), and then like 5-10 to another … and insert those throughout the note? Idk. But there’s an app called Diarium u can add a photo/photos per day, and it uploads your location on each entry. There’s other apps too
I'm curious about the formatting of the date/title. Did you do that manually after the fact or are you able to have the shortcut change the size of the date/title automatically?
The title of the note is formatted automatically. In my case, the shortcut automatically sets the current date as the title of the note.
@@jeremybassetti I keep trying to find a way to create a new note that automatically has the title in Title case but I can only get it to enter the title as body text, which I then have to go back and change manually.
I’m not sure I understand the problem. My shortcut creates notes with the date as the note title in title case. Not sure where you’re having a problem. If it is with another shortcut you’re trying to make, screen shot and e-mail me (or send me a link to the shortcut) so I can take a peek at what you’re trying to do.

@@jeremybassetti I figured out the issue. It wasn't with the shortcut; it was with the settings of the Notes app on my phone. I had it set to start all notes with body text. Once I changed that so that new notes start with title text, everything worked as intended. Thanks for your offer to help, though.
Any hints how to change the units of altitude from meters to feet?
Yes. It should be tied to your system settings. If it is not, this is the workaround: immediately after the get altitude from current location action, enter a calculation action that times the altitude in feet by .3048. Then, in the action area where you append all the location Information into the note, replace the altitude variable with the calculation. Just tested it and works beautifully.

thanks for this! when i run the shortcut, i get an error “Frame load interrupted”. it appends NEW ENTRY to the note but not the location. any idea how to fix?
Yikes. Ive never come upon that error. Too many variables for me to speculate here. I’d say, try to build a new shortcut using my instructions. And then debug and test it as you build it to isolate the problem. That may give more clues.

Weird. I just tested it myself and it is working as it should on my end. But, no matter… you can build the shortcut yourself following the instructions in the “building the shortcut” part of the video.
is it posible that "Find All Notes" is not avaiable anymore with the last version when I write this comment?
I’ve seen people report that Find All Notes is missing after upgrading. Might be a bug. That said, the filter notes seems to be working in lieu of it. Have you tried that?

can you show or send me the way to convert the Altitude from meters to feet? I know there is someone that has asked this below, but for we novices on shortcuts, your explanation needs to be more specific or better answered. Merely saying to do a calculation by taking the variable and multiplying it by 3.28 does not work.
