I’m from the eighties and, I frequented the odyssey than Studio One. I never cruised like you said, I was a great dancer that was the key for picking up guy’s. At least for me anyway. I heard you saying the gold-coast is no more that’s where I met my lover. In the cruise alley behind there. Tell jaylen I think he’s really cute? Great personality too. P.s. I miss the greenery aka the queenery.

Trunks isn’t the only bar you can find rent boys. All of those bars have them. Gotta love WeHo!

Fiesta was Mustache Cafe. Rock Hudson had a back table and would cruise the boys.

Meeting other men back in the days was more real than now. When you meet someone in person, you get the feeling if you are attracted to him and if you want to go home with him. Nowadays you can talk to a guy on social media for days or weeks and you think you are attracted to him, but when you actually meet him in person, you have no attraction or no connection to the guy. So I wasted all that time chatting with someone and nothing come out of it. Also, back in the days when you go to nightclubs, you have to look around and make eye contact and talk to people, nowadays when I go to clubs, I just see people standing around looking down at their cell phones the entire night. They spend more time on their cell phones than talking to people or dancing.

Wow, thanks for the trip down memory lane guys. I'm Australian and travelled to the States with my, at the time, boyfriend for the first time way back in 1995. When we visited LA we stayed at what is the Ramada Plaza West Hollywood, not sure what it was called back then, I think it was the same as today. I remember the OJ Simpson trial was coming to a conclusion at the time and all the News camera's were camped out the front of the LA courthouse while we were doing the tourist visit activities about town.
Anyway, as a young twenty something gay lad, one of the highlights of that trip was having drama with my then boyfriend who didn't want to go out much, apart from the usual tourist attractions. One hot day, I cracked the shits big time and took myself out on an adventure along Santa Monica Blvd. There was a gym across the road from the hotel, perhaps it was called West Hollywood Gym or Sports Erection... something like that. I think it is now called John Reed Fitness? I'd met a French-Canadian gay guy who was also staying at the hotel and he told me the gym was very "gay friendly". I was missing my daily workout routine and decided to go to the gym for a session. WOW! I was not disappointed. There were 4 fella's standing to the side of the room looking at me doing my weights and I kind of thought they all looked familiar. After a while I started talking to one of them and realised why he was so familiar; he was one of my favourite gay porn stars - Hal Rockland. Needless to say, the change room scene that day at the gym was the stuff of real life fantasy come true!
I headed back to the Hotel and spent some time by the poolside with my new French-Canadian friend and ended up getting to know him quite intimately as well... I know, I know, I was quite the tart that day; but hey I was on vacation all the way from Australia, so why not. LOL
Later that evening, after going to dinner with my boring boyfriend, he was a nice guy just not very adventurous. I again decided to go out and hit some bars along the strip. Hal, had told me there was a place called "Mickey's House Party" that "wasn't too bad" for some fun but was a bit "seedy". I was pretty nervous to be honest but went inside anyway. It wasn't like the clubs in Australia at all. On entering there was a small bar area at the front that reminded me of a saloon bar. It was quiet and the main club area was out the back behind the entry bar from memory. I remember sitting at the front bar and ordering a beer when this guy come and sat next to me. He was friendly enough and gave me an E. We made our way out the back, the music was loud, very clubby and the place had a good vibe. I thought it was funny there seemed to be many establishments called "house parties" which was a new concept to me at the time. Mickey's got busy after midnight and I ended up talking to this awesome looking tall Texan bloke. Turned out his name was Matthew McConaughey but I didn't know who he was at the time. He'd told me he was straight and currently making a movie; but I was like a puppy by now and simply in awe of his accent and stunning good looks. We got so drunk and I was so wasted at this point as you can imagine; a very good time was being had. Matthew started taking off his clothes down to his undies and got up dancing on the bar. It was an epic night I'll never forget. That was my last day and night in LA on that visit - it was WILD! The next day my boyfriend and I headed to San Diego for a surf carnival. All the hotels were booked out for conventions so we ended up sleeping on the beach somewhere. Gawd, that whole trip was wild when I think back to it. So many stories to tell from being shot at in our rental car in downtown San Francisco to being confronted by a gang at a late night gas station in some LA suburb. Good times... lol.
So, watching this video and seeing Mickey's is still an operating establishment filled me with nostalgia. Interesting the original place burnt down and I can see it looks totally different today. Your bars/clubs are a lot smaller than the ones we went to here in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia. I couldn't believe your clubs closed at 1-2am in the 90's either. Aussie clubs in the 90's were open through to dawn and then we'd kick off to "afterparties" at another venue on what we called our "pub crawls". A night out started on Thursday evening, quick break for work on Friday and then in and out of clubs from Friday night to Sunday arvo and then probably off to $1 pots at the pub on Monday night after work. We'd stay home Tuesday night to recover and go to a restaurant with friends on Wednesday nights. I sure do miss the 1990's. We knew how to party back in the day that's for sure.

Much of the reason these bars were closed to the street in 80/90's is due to security. Drunken straight boys would drive down SM Blvd jump out assault patrons, throw bricks ,fire bombs and even gunfire. The bad old days🙄

It would be great if you could get a second mic. Then the person you’re interviewing can speak freely, and it would feel more like a conversation and more natural, and less awkward.

@biggooseadventures I rather enjoyed it back in the day. The hookers working down by Western Ave off the boulevard.
It's just become really bougie and pretentious looking now.
I miss Studio One and am so devastated that they tore that landmark down. So shameful.
