Never a truer statement!! I spent my late teens, 20’s and 30’s in the army jumping out of planes, killing people and blowing crap up. Never an injury of any kind. Retired joined the labor force for 20 years. Then a freak accident broke my neck and compressed my spine. My body went to hell and everything Randy is saying happened. You are definitely correct. I'm 72 and still in the media side of fishing and shooting after 51 years, which is definitely a teaching process. As for the physical side of things, I also work as a Trail Tamer for a conservation department, which keeps me constantly exercising with tree work of all types, mowing areas on steep hills by hand with larger mowers can not safely go, and clearing/maintaining and building new trails. Virgil Ward, Bill Norman, John Campbell, Lonnie Stanley and Forrest Wood, all played parts in my career, and from them I learned a lot. Now, as you said, the younger ones don't want to listen, and is why I turned down a TV gig on a regular show with a young woman as the host. After I didn't sugar coat anything and told her my age, she knew it would go well for the younger audience that she was wanting to play to for her ratings. So guys listen to Randy. He knows what he is talking about. When I had my radio show I was reporting about his first tournament accomplishments, as well as in my newspaper and magazine columns. Hang in there Randy. You are still a young man to us older guys. 🤣
Randy is absolutely right here. While I am not in a gym, I am outside walking and climbing hills at least 3 days a week. Winter is where I hit the treadmill and do light weight lifting to keep my fitness level up to where once Spring gets here I am ready to roll. I have even gotten back into riding a bike and that has helped build my leg strength. Excellent topic Randy.
I'm 67 and still kickin'. Just shoveled a ton of snow off my driveway here in southern Wisconsin 4 times in the last 24 hours, with a snow shovel! I don't go to a gym but I eat well, drink less, stay active, walk and lift some weights. I started playing guitar. I still get advice from my 90 yr old father (whether I want it or not) I started buying BPS Carbonlite rods and reels because of my tendinitis in both arms. Rod and reel combined weighs 11 ounces. It helps.
Such great advice! I'm 60 and ran my 50th marathon in 18 years. A bit excessive perhaps but it's fun to stay active and helps me feel all around more youthful including when I'm out fishing
Good advice Randy. I’m 51 and in the best shape I’ve been in since my 20’s. I don’t go to the gym but I work out every day. Cardio and strength training. Keep it up buddy I really enjoy your content.

Good job Randy I’m 64 and you hit the nail on the head ! We fish from rowboats and I have friends that retired with me and I see how out of shape I got but also how they have ! Just bringing the gear to the boat is a workout . I fish more than them so I know it’s helping me physically. I tell people the oars and boat is my gym !!
Great advice Randy! Going to the gym for strength training and some cardio is the fountain of youth. For those that have never done much of this training or haven't in a long time, be sure to: 1.) start slow 2.) try to do a little more each workout and 3.) stay consistent/workout regularly. I'm 66 and try to go to the gym twice a week, it's helped me stay in shape and feel better.
Agreed 100%. My Dad always said you spend the first third of your life learning, the next third earning and the last third serving. Coaching and mentoring after 50 is natural. Keeping yourself fit physically and mentally also is one of the keys to a longer, happier life!
I'm learning so much from Randy! We need to get together and go fishing sometime. I'm 68, finally retired and looking for my ever first boat. I'm staying in shap. I don't want to get out on the water and go overboard and be out of shape! That's where they say they are in " recovery mode" for your body! Stay healthy, know your limits and don't try to be somebody or something you're not!
At 64 years old and retired I totally get what you are saying! The time will come when the younger guys hands and fingers will ache and get stiff from holding that rod. Their backs will hurt after lugging a tackle bag around the pond. I also agree about sharing what little knowledge I have. It's rewarding for me when a first time angler comes up to me at a pond and asks for help with their gear or ask how I'm catching fish. I still got to work on that Gym thing but even a good walk is better than nothing. Thanks for making this video. Much gratitude !
Thanks Randy. I needed a kick in the butt (approaching 65). I’ve been walking and working physically but not every day. I need the cardio to regain my endurance. With your help Randy, I’ll be ready to mentor a high school bass fishing team.
Wise words Randy. I’m 64 years old. Stage 4 prostate cancer. Started working out with a trainer 5 months ago right before I started 6 weeks of radiation treatments and 6 months of hormone treatments. I feel great. I would add this, give Jesus a try. If he is real he is everything. Best health in the world is nothing without Him.
Amen. Stage 4 rectal cancer is my reality. Going to the gym is a pipe dream when you’re taking intense chemotherapy 🤷♂️. That said, I’m blessed beyond measure because I’ve trusted Jesus as my Lord and Savior
Very accurate comments and insight. As I’m now in my mid 40’s and starting to experience the “mind says no problem but the body doesn’t agree” and weight gain, muscle loss, etc. Anyway great timing for me to see this and add some fuel to doing what I know I need to do.
Randy you are so true. I'm 84 and go to the gym 3 or 4 days a week. I tell my kids keep active always keep going enjoy your days, but remember always be careful and take your time. Good luck all!
Spot on Randy! I’m 100% with you! Fitness means endurance, strength, balance, and agility. All these fitness aspects apply to fishing! Thanks for the motivation!
Your spot on I’m 48 and really fill it my doctor told me when I was 35 a man’s body starts to decline he was surely right and I’ve always took advice and listened to older people I’d say 90 percent of my friends range from 60 to 88 years old I really injoy talking to older people because one thing about it they can give you life advice in so many different ways plus there stories they tell are pretty interesting and a big thank you Randy for all you do with your channels so much good information and advice you give keep up the good work
I am right with you Randy. My Father well before he passed on told me that life will pass by very quickly after you hit 40 and each decade that passes gets faster and faster. I just turned 60 in December and I said where the hell did the last 10-20 years go? I tell this to both my sons and they look at me like i am crazy, i suppose I did the same to my Dad but started to see it play out in my late 40's, as this is no joke. Thanks Randy for this wisdom and the younger generations need to listen as life will pass by in the blink of an eye!
I'll be 50 in April. My skin has started tearing easily, the aches and pains take longer to go away. But I still catch fish if they're around to catch. I appreciate your advice Randy. You're a good dude. I work under houses every day and I'm probably underweight at 147. I definitely don't want to stop moving and staying busy. The gym would be a good idea too, but it's hard to do after a day crawling around under houses and working.
Had back surgery a few of years ago at age 32. Everything has changed and went down hill. It’s a battle mentally just to get motivated when in pain most times. Be careful. Randy is spot on. Listen to the older guys about body preservation. Maybe you can make it past the thirties in good shape.
Hey Randy good advice I'm disabled I need a hip and back operation. But I still listened to the video thanks for the wisdom appreciate that. I don't always comment on your mental Monday but thanks again and God bless you and your family.
At 57,I stay on my motocross bikes And extreme Enduro woods riding,One of the hardest and most challenging work outs on the planet,And feel around 30 years old,A clean nutritional diet as well And also work as a custom carpenter, stair and deck builder, etc, etc! Good Advice 👍
26 y/o here . If it wasnt for the old timer i wouldnt be fishing. Watched him call a cast like babe ruth and catch the biggest fish of the day 😂, mind was blown . Its so much more than just fishing / catching fish ❤
I've been telling myself that I have got to get back into the gym I haven't done that in years and the last time I did I felt like I was at least 5 years younger. Listening to your video is sort of giving me the mental push I need to go ahead and get started.
I agree - I have been in the gym since my 30's. I am 60 and I still fish with my Son and his buddies, and have no problem keeping up with the longer day trips and weekend trips. The guys my age (5years older and younger) don't go near as often as they used too. Randy is correct about getting in the gym, both weight (resistance training) and cardio. Also focus on you diet (healthy eating). You tube is a great resource for how to train in the gym.
...and in those Traditional communities we ALL used to know these observations about the different eras of the human lifecycle. Of course, we ALL knew that we were part of the Natural ecosystem too. Now most people's internal mental habitat is extremely disconnected from the external physical habitat- and it shows. Good talk, Randy!
Clever Words well spoken. Thanks Randy. 62 Your Proof Positive Kid. I have fallen out of shape. I made sure to thin down. My muscles have taken a backseat. 56 and counting on fishing 56 more.
Been teaching kids about hunting and fishing since I was in my late 40's and they still enjoy the time spent with me even those that are adults now, nice just knowing that l accomplished something good in our lives
Never a more true observation. I am 76 and enjoy standing on the bow of a bass boat. The reality is it takes core strength. The truth is when young you work out for a week and it last months. When you are 70+ you work out for months and it last weeks. I started yoga and Tai Chi along with the machines at the gym. After about 3 months I can hang on that bow for a 8 hr or 2 day club tournament. There is no need to give up what you enjoy, but it does require commitment.
Thank you Randy for this bit of wisdom to help us out. I'm not as important as you men out there but I still have a lot of wisdom and faith to share. 🙂👍
100% on the put yourself aside and start to mentor. I’ve started taking a couple high school kids in our church youth group fishing…they are keeping me feeling young (most of the time) lol😂
I completely agree, Im 40 I started strength training at about 36, and I now feel better than I did in my mid 20’s. I weigh lift 6 days a week and train Jiu Jitsu 3 times a week. Even if your body hurts, get active you will feel better!
Randy. I am 71 years older retired and want to Finnish my life out fishing on lake guntersville. You hit it on the money about age but iam not ready to stop my dream of fishing. Thanks.
Randy, I agree with a lot of points. However, at my age i plan on fishing more. Not necessarily tournaments, but, when i was in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s working 40-60hrs per week raising a family fishing was on the back burner. Now i can enjoy fishing and golf. I go to gym and golf is my exercise.
I’m 75 and go to exercise class 3 days a week. I walk on the off days, and do the outdoor chores myself rather than paying someone to do it. Randy, you are spot on. It’s true, if you don’t use it you lose it.
I can agree with you 💯 Randy about workouts and physical fitness. I am 74 and just had a traumatic hip fracture and I had to get an emergency hip replacement and I have been working with a physical therapist for 12 weeks now and I am much stronger now. I planned on starting a workout program one week before my accident, and I told my doctor that I didn’t expect a hip fracture to be the way to get started 😂😂 I ride a stationary bike and hike now and I am looking forward to this fishing season with the two bass clubs I’m in here in Raleigh. I am stronger than I have been in the past 3-5 years and it’s only been 3 months.
I can tell you this Randy, I'm 74 years old trying to keep healthy, I walk 3 miles every morning and eat very healthy. The hardest part is tying my jigs and plugs on LOL I can hardly see 4 lb line and god save me if the wind is blowing. I refuse to stop fishing and playing my guitar. I now use snaps on all my jig / crank bait rods, I'd rather tie on but the snaps make things much better. Tight lines bro Los Angeles
I’m little older than you and retired, was carpenter for forty years. My body is pretty worn out hips, knees etc. surprisingly my back is ok. My hands don’t work like they used to. I don’t let it stop me though, use it or lose it is what I go by👍
I'm 63 I didn't even start fishing tournaments until 2010. I was too busy making a living and not fishing in my 20's 30's and 40's Until my father who had just retired at 62 began fishing local tournaments and was injured in a freak accident in the boat and died from a blood clot in his lungs from a broken neck he had gotten in the accident. In memory of my father I took up tournament fishing and have excelled at it. I have placed 2nd in angler of the year 4 times won 35 tournaments attended BASS Nation regionals 2 times.Plus I fish on average 30 to 35 tournaments a year. I work hard so I can enjoy fishing I also enjoy seeing the faces of those young 20 and 30 something guys seeing the OLD GUY whipping their butts!
Stay in shape, keep learning, stay interested in life, free your mind from the toxicity of social media and society. Your 40’s can be the best of both worlds. I’m 42 and I go with what I feel, and not get too caught up in numbers.
44 now, been Goin hard doin hvy work. Just got a hernia, and nodule in my lung 🫁. Time to slow down.make a work change, and enjoy the last third💥🎣👍.go Randy 🎣
Great advice Randy ! I'm 68 still armwrestling against the youngsters . I can fish 10 to 12 hrs a day in Canada for a week. It's hard to fish a jerk bait all day ! But the point is if I didnt work out alot I couldn't do either . Exercise and good nutrition is the fountain of youth for sure .
Great advice Randy... I'm in a very early 60's, retiring in 5 weeks (WOO-Hoo)... Going to join a gym my 1st week "out" (it's already in the books) - can't wait!!!! Thanks again for words of wisdom!
Yeah, I am 65. Was in physical therapy on Thursday. Have been in the gym and stretching. Re-evaluating how I load my Kayak Hurt my should muscles when I took up surf casting for stripers, and hurt my shoulder by trying to throw heavier lures farther. Bass fishing uses lighter year and I didn't hurt myself.
So very true. I’m 60 and I have been a cna for 17 years. More younger people come into the nursing homes younger, because they choose to do as little as possible. Please take care of your health. Keep moving and enjoy life.❤
I watched my dad fall apart cause of a recliner, and I tried over and over to help him get up and move , and I tried and tried over and over but I couldn’t get him to stick with moving around , it was sad , but thanks for your advice mr Randy I do need to hear this from you I need the gym
I am 56 and ran over 2600 miles last year and have averaged over 7 miles per day for several years now. I do strength training every other day. I qualified for the Boston Marathon in 2 of my last 3 marathons. It is fun running past 25 year old in a lot of races:) You definitely can feel younger as you get older. The key is the food -- whole foods nutrition is so vitally important -- and staying active in some way, every day. You don't have to run or lift weights or do resistance training specifically but you do need to be getting these aspects into your daily routine in some way, shape, or fashion whether it's purposeful or just by happenstance.
Randy is absolutely right. When I turned 45 I got on the wagon of fitness, started working out eating right and got into the Martial Arts. I got my Black Belt in American Goju Karate at age 50. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am 70 now and in better shape than I was at 40. Listen to what Randy has to say and start eating healthy and doing some kind of workout daily and it will pay dividends in the future. As for getting old gracefully, that is not for me. I am going kicking and screaming all the way to the grave.
So, so true. Everything you said. Like they say, if you don't have your health, you don't have anything. Can't believe I hit 60 last yr. But I'm trying not to fight it. You've got to age like wine instead of like a hamburger or whatever. And this isn't a plug, but also good supplements like balance of nature has really helped me a lot in the past few yrs. Thx for all you do
Amen spot on thank you very much for telling the truth I’m 58 and very lucky I can still do the bass fishing and whitetail thing - your 100 percent correct and yes we do have a lot to pass down if anyone what’s to listen thank you again for putting it in the correct context and taking the time to pass it along p.s. Roland martins favorite spot on lake Champlain were his son now Scott Martin fishes every time he comes here is rock river to the west swanton bridge lucky now I can fish it every day seeing I live right here so ya - I will pass down as much as I can and still enjoy bass fishing / eat healthy / exercise keep stress down and Rock on.
Excellent start to end with one modification on exercise. Not every day. Recovery is as important as the exercise. Mentor note: young guys, what you develop when young raises your baseline for either recovering from injury, disuse or surgery. Get started. 68 years old. Lifted weights since 8th grade.
I agree started hitting the gym hard and keeping a level weigh at age 40, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done physically. I do not intend on leaving this world quietly. I plan on sliding in sideways throwing dirt and gravel yellin WOW WHAT A RIDE!!!
72 years old. Work my practice 30 hours a week. Bicycle 6 miles. Swim 2,000 yards. Kayak fish 2-3 times a month. Catch almost no fish; however, doing pretty well Thanks Randy.
I hate working out, but doing Jiu Jitsu is so fun and mentally engaging. It's so good for mind and body all around. Especially if you can avoid rolling with spastic/strong 20 year old white belts.
Agree working out puts you n the right state of mind and puts you in a more positive mode bike riding kayaking makes my fishing experience sooooo much better Randy enjoy life pro tournaments are very stressful never really enjoyed fishing when I was in tournaments even my family said was very stressed out Now my family n friends say they see a huge difference since I don't do tournaments anymore it's a totally different sport tournament fishing now a days compared to the 70s n 80s / technology and atude is changing fishing so glad I got out of tournaments Enjoy life be happy and never give up fishing 🎣 with the family is so much better then any tournaments watching 👀 my grand kids catching fish Thanks for all ur videos n knowledge randy been their n done that it's family time now Fish 🐟 ON BROTHER
I turned on the TV this morning and on Pursuit channel Garmin had a sponsored program showing ice fishermen using Livescope for crap fishing. I mean crappie. So they would drill a hole search around find a little school go there and drill a hole and drop down and catch the fish seeing it eat their bait. I thought you would enjoy this little bit of info. As far as fit, I have never been in a gym. I do a lot of hard physical work. That way my efforts result in something useful. I am 81 years old very active and have not been to a quack in over 20 years.

there is always hope, i used to post all this same kind of thing when I was a non believer. never give up, God is not willing that any should perish, but all come to him...@@danielmyatt3494
Thank you for the support Randy!!!
Great advice. I'm 71 and have been very successful on numerous things and you are exactly right.
You’re the man Randy. I turn 49 this year and you are spot on about going to the gym. It’s only 1 hr per day that makes such a difference
Agree with you, Randy! Stay strong, mentally and physically!!
Amen!,listen to this man Randy!
Amen Brother; Christ is the only way.
Amen. Stage 4 rectal cancer is my reality. Going to the gym is a pipe dream when you’re taking intense chemotherapy 🤷♂️. That said, I’m blessed beyond measure because I’ve trusted Jesus as my Lord and Savior

I will be praying for you Ivan. Where do you live?
Randy great advice. I turned 62 and joined a gym in July of 2023. I would recommend it to everyone especially after you retire.
Excellent advice for all of us older guys.
Hitting the gym has helped me so much!!!!! I am 60 now and the benefits of working out has helped me so much!!!!!
Great advice Randy especially getting to the gym and working out.
Randy, this is one of the best videos you’ve made. Great life advice
Well said, and thank you… I teach a High School team, and am helping them make the championship here in Texas.. I am humbled by their dedication..
Hey Randy good advice I'm disabled I need a hip and back operation. But I still listened to the video thanks for the wisdom appreciate that. I don't always comment on your mental Monday but thanks again and God bless you and your family.
I’m 62, Randy thank you for the wisdom !
Great advice. I am quickly approaching 65 and have been a gym rat all my life. Being fit has enabled me to enjoy retirement and my grand kids.
...and in those Traditional communities we ALL used to know these observations about the different eras of the human lifecycle. Of course, we ALL knew that we were part of the Natural ecosystem too. Now most people's internal mental habitat is extremely disconnected from the external physical habitat- and it shows. Good talk, Randy!
I hear ya, I’ll be 55 in the spring and noticed I’ve lost a step too.
Clever Words well spoken.
Thanks Randy.
62 Your Proof Positive Kid.
I have fallen out of shape.
I made sure to thin down.
My muscles have taken a backseat.
56 and counting on fishing 56 more.
Great video, Randy!! Keep fighting for the integrity of the sport of bass fishing!
Been teaching kids about hunting and fishing since I was in my late 40's and they still enjoy the time spent with me even those that are adults now, nice just knowing that l accomplished something good in our lives
I am 65years old now
Loving the hat!!!🤠 I'm over 50!!! And thanks for thinking about us 🦕🦖!!!
Quite timely for me. I just turned 50 this past December. Great video.
Thanks.
I've been a weightlifter most of my life, primarily to keep in shape for my fishing. Nowadays the MOUNTAIN BIKE is my newest passion. Hoo boy.
All good advise Randy, thank you!
Well said. Maintaining decent physical condition is critical.
Re-evaluating how I load my Kayak
Hurt my should muscles when I took up surf casting for stripers, and hurt my shoulder by trying to throw heavier lures farther.
Bass fishing uses lighter year and I didn't hurt myself.
Oh, I almost forgot! I bought a new boat yesterday. (Used)
So very true. I’m 60 and I have been a cna for 17 years. More younger people come into the nursing homes younger, because they choose to do as little as possible. Please take care of your health. Keep moving and enjoy life.❤
Agreed Randy thank you for sharing this wisdom.
I agree withmost of what you've said, but one big point. You have to have support from your other half.
I watched my dad fall apart cause of a recliner, and I tried over and over to help him get up and move , and I tried and tried over and over but I couldn’t get him to stick with moving around , it was sad , but thanks for your advice mr Randy I do need to hear this from you I need the gym
Bravo! I think that was a great information gold nugget!
So True Randy!!
At 65 I’ve had to start working on my balance so that I don’t fall out of the boat like I did last year.
I’m 52 thank you bass master
This is wisdom.
Very wise advice for everyone in any arena of life!
Thx for all you do
Some really good thoughts. Thanks. Despite the haters you have you are really a very wise guy.
it's interesting that as we get older history becomes more important
Randy do a video on how important keeping your hands in good shape for longevity!!
Catch almost no fish; however, doing pretty well
Thanks Randy.
I hate working out, but doing Jiu Jitsu is so fun and mentally engaging. It's so good for mind and body all around. Especially if you can avoid rolling with spastic/strong 20 year old white belts.
Agree working out puts you n the right state of mind and puts you in a more positive mode bike riding kayaking makes my fishing experience sooooo much better
Randy enjoy life pro tournaments are very stressful never really enjoyed fishing when I was in tournaments even my family said was very stressed out
Now my family n friends say they see a huge difference since I don't do tournaments anymore it's a totally different sport tournament fishing now a days compared to the 70s n 80s / technology and atude is changing fishing so glad I got out of tournaments
Enjoy life be happy and never give up fishing 🎣 with the family is so much better then any tournaments watching 👀 my grand kids catching fish
Thanks for all ur videos n knowledge randy been their n done that it's family time now
Fish 🐟 ON BROTHER
I turned on the TV this morning and on Pursuit channel Garmin had a sponsored program showing ice fishermen using Livescope for crap fishing. I mean crappie. So they would drill a hole search around find a little school go there and drill a hole and drop down and catch the fish seeing it eat their bait. I thought you would enjoy this little bit of info.
As far as fit, I have never been in a gym. I do a lot of hard physical work. That way my efforts result in something useful. I am 81 years old very active and have not been to a quack in over 20 years.
Well said and great advice.
