Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
My dad and myself would be bluegill fishing on a small lake in southeast Michigan. We’d be in a rowboat my dad would set down his pole and pick up this ancient steel pole with bait casting reel with a silver minnow spoon, sometimes with a uncle Josh’s pork frog. He’d cast that Dacron line and pull that thing close to weeds and catch pike and bass.
Much respect to the pioneers of this sport , no advanced technology like today ( forward facing sonar etc ) and they were able to figure out how to catch fish !
I fish striped bass with flutter spoon all the time. I own a summer saltwater charter, and we get a lot of customers for stripers. Happy to say I’ve been fishing them correctly, and showing my clients how to use them for years now. We use the giant ones for stripers. I like 9” copper spoons for our dark, Canadian salt water. Gold works good if yheres a lot of particulate in the water, and silver seems to work well after dark.
Hi Randy, a friend of mine threw a silver and chartreuse. He always caught suspended bass. My first was a 3 pounder, I’m glad you reminded me of that ! Thanks Randy !
Yup, my Dad’s old tackle box had some huge old red/white Daredevil spoons that had been thrashed by pike in his Minnesota days! I’ve never used them for bass. I’ve also never heard of the holding it while it unwinds to draw strikes. Fantastic tip and info! Thanks Randy. 😃👍🏼
Yeah, those probably aren’t flutter spoons. Bass don’t like them much. Flutter spoons have a specific action that flutters down the column when you take tension off of them.
@@Stonehorn - Yes, I was just commenting on Randy’s statement in the beginning of the video about back in the days of our parents, the only spoons available were those “Red and White” ones. So I brought up my Dads Daredevils since I think thats what he was referring to. 😊👍🏼
We fished flutter spoons up here in Nova Scotia Canada in the late 60s, threw the 70s for Smallmouth, LOL it was one of the only lures we could afford 19 Cents back then.
Anybody that lives in CA and fishes the California aqueduct. The flutter spoon works great! And don’t be scared of the size! Good luck out there! And yes. Jig it up & let it flutter down. Repeat. And if you fish like pumps with fast flowing water. It’s a killer!!!
Love your vids. I’ve caught many bass in summer on those old spoons that were covered in round dents all over one side. I’d throw them into cover and reel them steadily just fast enough for them to move side to side. Going fishing soon and can’t wait to try the technique in the vid.
awesome video and awesome throw back to the greats. I used to go to Springfield every summer cause my grandparents lived there. learned to fish from my grandfather. they had house on a cove of lake Springfield down by the damn. cheers bub
Jigs and jigging spoons have taken off in the saltwater too. I bet some of the slow pitch and fast pitch stuff for saltwater would be good for deep bass too. The lighter rods and reels for saltwater jigging should be good too for vertical presentations.
You are right about a lot of things were discovered in the Ozarks remember Charlie Campbell walking the dog. And Bill Beck had a good way of fishing the spoon
I caught the biggest largemouth of my life on an undressed johnson silver minnow casting around schools of huge shiners . I hold the rod up and pop it almost in place. Works wonders.
Had a laugh, Randy knows so much about fishing, then called them those red and white spoons. LOL How about Mepps as well, they've been around since 1938, still a good bass lure
Got a lake I've been fishing with a lot of deep timber. Like 30 to 40 feet deep with tree tops sticking out the top. It's a an old rock quarry. Would you guys be using a flutter spoon there?
As a kid, back in the late 50's, caught plenty of smallmouth & largemouth, on a Johnson spoon with a pork chunk trailer. Later called jig n pig. Generally, would pop it a bit then let it flutter down. Wasn't necessarily for suspended fish...but was deadly in deep creek holes in SE Oklahoma.
Don't knock the old eppinger red and white daredevle. I caught my first largemouth on one when I was like 12 years old. A seven pounder!! Using a zebco spincast combo trolling from a jon boat. These are great lures for bass too. Haven't used one in years, but it's the one lure that would always get me bites. I'm gonna try it this summer on Lake Wylie.
I've a large variety from 1"- 6" but yet it's the last bait I reach for. Probably cause it's my least favorite. Like the A-rig it can plumb wear you out.
So no swivel? I hate when spoons twist up my line, but if you let them hang and spin in the water to unravel and caught fish, maybe I’ll give it a try.
In your eyes this guy is a legend because he found these fish with a flasher and caught them. But today if somebody does the same technique with livestope you feel it should be banned. I've heard you talk about how these fish out deep shouldn't be disturbed, and how they used to be uncatchable. Seems like a giant contradiction.
I think your leaving out the fact that doing it with a flasher is extremely difficult and almost nobody could do it ! Livescope is built for that ! You cannot spotlight bass with a flasher .lol Just because someone figures out how to catch fish out deep with minimal technology and 1000s of hrs on the water does not compare with Livescope
Yea, comparing Livescope to a flasher is dumb. It’s a $$ thing for me. It’s like bass boats. You need a fast boat to be competitive (and have the balls to drive it that dangerously fast) what if someone invented an electronic lure that pisses a bass off and it hits it everytime but it costs $8k. Should that be legal?
@@randyblaukatintuitive If you've never seen a purple spoon neither has these bass lol. Caught 11 on a top water bone colored walker the other day thanks to you. Appreciate that tip.
Thanks Randy, The spoon is a go to for me in the summer. I live close to a bridge and I bounce it off the columns.. If you will reply to this I would love to share something I discovered about spoon fishing.. David.
Do color matter? In 2023 those spoon are getting expensive,, they cost around $6-$10 for that size now.. they sell all kind of colors, silver, golden, red, blue, some even have fish painting on it…. and when you use those spoon, they can get stuck in the weed and rocks at the bottom. Do color matter?

A spoon is DEFINITELY something I need to get more comfortable with. Glad you put this out today.

Great video Randy. Seems simple enough! Thanks!

now that’s probably the first time i’ve ever heard using twisted line to your advantage! Good stuff Raqndyy!

all i use are Dardevles. matter of fact i bought several flutter spoons a couple of months ago, i will use them for the first time this spring.

Love to see the appreciation for the teachers and the sport. Never stop learning. Respect nature and those who came before. 🎣🐟🐠

They're my favorite. Well here in north texas the sand bass will absolutely attack flutter spoons. Love it. 🤙🏻
Planning to do a lot of this, this summer.
Getting my spoon in the mail tomorrow and going to give it a whirl Saturday. Thank you for the tips!
I’m one who’s never fished a spoon, but for whatever reason it’s just been on my brain for weeks now….so I guess it’s on to bass pro😂🎣! Thanks Randy

Very informative. Thanks. I love spoons.

I have been waiting to fish these but did not know how.

Thanks will try
Man, thats cool!
I caught the biggest largemouth of my life on an undressed johnson silver minnow casting around schools of huge shiners . I hold the rod up and pop it almost in place. Works wonders.
Yesterday I was throwing a 4 inch flutter spoon in the Osage river and caught/released a huge carp.
That was a first for me.
Great video thank you for the History
Had a laugh, Randy knows so much about fishing, then called them those red and white spoons. LOL How about Mepps as well, they've been around since 1938, still a good bass lure
I use the R2S worldwide. Very good for mid column bass. They will come get it. A fun way to catch em.
Got a lake I've been fishing with a lot of deep timber. Like 30 to 40 feet deep with tree tops sticking out the top. It's a an old rock quarry. Would you guys be using a flutter spoon there?
Are you using a swivel to avoid line twist with the methods you mentioned at the end of the video?
Incredible, I'll take my spoons !!!
What kind of line would you throw those spoons on?

I know Dick, he lived up the street from me, he took my dad fishing a few times on Table Rock, great guy.
He’s my grandpa
We were slayin some fish on spoon earlier
What kind of line and how many pound test is recommended
20-25lb test
Didn't Greg Hackney win on a spoon.. if I remember correctly he was fishing a spoon on a doc and smoked em.. he even signed the doc.

A flasher and livescope are two different worlds. You would be f#cked with a flasher they require skill.

They call me the spooner master back in high school
😂
Who pulled up in the driveway??
❤❤❤
Intentionally putting line twist on sounds like a bad idea 😅
Squirrel 😂
haha i definetly suck with a spoon . would love to get some faith in it though
👍👍👌👍
I would absolutely be one of the ones that suck with a spoon lol
fishing a spoon with no split ring scares me
Thanks Randy, The spoon is a go to for me in the summer. I live close to a bridge and I bounce it off the columns.. If you will reply to this I would love to share something I discovered about spoon fishing.. David.
Not really the same bait/technique that was popularized on Lake Fork
Dick sold me my first Ranger from Sport boat USA!
He’s my grandpa He’s an amazing man
Haha, even Randy sucks blind casting a flutter spoon.... without his sonar technology.
