I am saddened by the news of Gordon Lightfoot's recent passing. He was a very gifted singer-songwriter who has produced so many good songs in a sixty-plus year career in music. My favorite song of his? If You Could Read My Mind, followed by The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Sundown. He was truly a legend, not just in Canadian music, but world music, particularly in the U.S. Midwest with regards to the Edmund Fitzgerald ballad. May he rest in peace and gifted talent. Thank you for sharing your art with the globe.
I met him in Peterborough (festival of lights), it was about 2 in the afternoon. I spotted him at his trailer behind the bandshell and I yelled to him and said come over and say hello to your biggest fan. There was no one else around and I had the good fortune to have a one on one with him for a good half hour as he invited me to sit outside his trailer under the canopy. I told him that I did not think there is another musician that could make the music feel what the lyrics are saying like he does and he looked at me and said that is a very profound compliment and prolly thye nicest one I have gotten. It was my dream come true as I play most of his songs on my guitar and sing like him too as our singing voices are pretty much identical. Love you Gord
I enjoyed this interview, especially the duet. That's a moment to treasure for a lifetime. R.I.P Mr Lightfoot as I search UA-cam footage for old gems like this when you were so near and wish I had seen you in the flesh.
I never knew the rich history of Gordon Lightfoot and well..... now I do! Im from down here here in Columbus Georgia in the States and I will say to you if you get to read this.... that you so gracefully made a profound effect on me growing up.I loved the song Sundown ..it gives me nostalgic past memory chills as a 6 year old ,,,,,,I use to sing to your song everyday ...literally!!!! and it's now become a blessing to my personal life and thank You sir! From a number one fan here in the States.Thank you for all the important and sincere meaning in your song writing.
I can not get enough of Gordon Lightfoot interviews So entertaining to hear the man speak of his music where at age 81 he can still pack concert halls any place in the world....Who else does that? ....
Rest in Peace and Love Gordon Lightfoot knowing you blessed us with amazing lyrics and music that will last forever! ❤🎼🇨🇦🎸🎶🙏🏻 Gordon Lightfoot passed away on May 1st 2023. In Toronto at the Sunnybrook Hospital at 84 years of age! Thank you Gordon for being giving me a lifelong soundtrack! Of over 5 decades! ❤🇨🇦🎶💃🏻
Respects the military veterans... I appreciate that about Gordon... A lot of entertainers disrespect and don't give honor to our Veterans... Sad to say but it's true... I appreciate the ones that do...
I agree, agree agree. With a legend like Gordon, you'd think they could formulate some actual questions and let him relate some stories about HIM and not a bunch of 15 second bursts. If theyl talked any faster, I expected his head to start spinning trying to follow them.
@@TangleF50 No, sorry. These are amateurs without a clue as to how to step back and let the star shine. While its important to keep the energy up and the interview going, even when the subject may be a bit slow (or humble) you ask the Q and get out of the way. The ability to interview is an art form, Howard Stern does it better than virtually anyone else, because he knows that despite his own success, its the guest who matters.
This is my third try to comment on this video :) I grow up listening to Gordon. Johnny Joanas from Clyde River, Nunavut introduced me to Gordon through the records he bought from Hudson Bay Company. I been listening to him ever since.
Saw him in concert in Vancouver at the QE Theatre - 1969 or '70. He was briliant. The music was superb (of course) - but he was funny as hell. Completely unexpected. It was so great, also, to see/hear John Stockfish and Red Shea - little did I know I'd be in Toronto in 1973 - doing session work produced by Gary Buck, and working with Ollie Strong, Al Brisco, Al Cherny, John Arpin - and Red Shea - shamelessly stealing any lick I could. Have loved Lightfoot for decades. My 51-yr-old son knows everyone of his songs - from my endlessly playing the vinyl albums, over and over. How incredibly grateful I am - to have come of age when Lightfoot and James Taylor, and YES, and Joni Mitchell, and Buffy Ste Marie and Steven Stills - were producing the best music of all time . . . Long may you all run . . .
he is a canadian cultural icon indeed Ama french Quebecer but a Canadian too Gordon Lightfoot never been influenced by american He always been a true canadian and made me proud to be canadian
One of my musical heroes - for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which: what he has been through physically including his time as an alcoholic. He is a survivor - salute!! But - listen to other interviews regarding how the Edmund Fitzgerald evolved and he'll tell you it was an article in a national magazine that inspired it. Not some night in an abandoned house as told here. He has the article framed in his house and even pulled some of the lines out of that article (as he read in that interview). The guy interviewing here should be selling used cars - not trying to interview one deserving of such respect. Singing the song together? That was a rare moment that won't be forgot (unfortunately).
Mon May 1, 2023 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐 Gordon Lightfoot died of national cause as reported on News. Condolence to his family and fans. Gordon's Lightfoot Canadian legacy will not be forgotten but his presence we will miss at concerts.
The interviewers talk so fast. Why? It's really interesting. Everything is quick. "Let's get the words out. What are you doing???? What have you done??? Tell me now!!! "Let me tell you. Quickly! "Gordon Lightfoot is a poet, storyteller and iconic musician. Watching this is embarrassing. He should never had to agree to interview this way. Let's flip the script. Interviewers and media and audiences start to accommodate artists to hopefully... eventually... get it.
This is a very perceptive observation. Gordon Lightfoot was very gracious to them here but they did not merit it. Rest In Peace Gordon Lightfoot. A true master of his craft to the end. A poet of the first order and a Canadian national treasure.
willie nelson id still performing !!cant sing never could really but gordons voice and guitar abd songs well hes the greatest ever and they all know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah...I always thought "Sundown" was about his relationship with Kathy Smith. I don't think that "I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess" has much to do with the sun setting over some farmhouse somewhere. I guess he just didn't really feel like he should "go there" in this particular interview, because Gord seems like a pretty straight shooter. But I understand you need to pick your spots.
Casparus...you might want to revise your position on it not being about her. Please see the paragraph about Gordon Lightfoot here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_Smith

A Canadian and world treasure whose music is as timeless as it is beautiful.Thank you Gordon.👏👏

That is such an amazing song! Still emotional and moving all these years later.
"I find a deserted house in the summer to do my writing." Wow, Gordon Lightfoot was a man truly who knew himself and his work.
I can not get enough of Gordon Lightfoot interviews So entertaining to hear the man speak of his music where at age 81 he can still pack concert halls any place in the world....Who else does that? ....
he sounds horrible live now, and his tickets are very expensive.
Still the same voice! He's on my Pandora playlist!
SIR GORDON LIGHTFOOT....A CANADIAN DIAMOND 💎 👌...ALWAYS LOVED & MISSED...THANK YOU GORDON ❤️ 🩵🤍🙏🏻
Gordon....you're so humble....somewhere along the line.....you must know how inspiring you actually are...Thank You....
Still a great interview, despite the song mess up, the interviewers still showed great respect to this great Canadian
Rest in Peace and Love Gordon Lightfoot knowing you blessed us with amazing lyrics and music that will last forever!

Of over 5 decades!

God bless you Gordon, love your music
We’re going to miss him. “If You Could Read My Mind” is one of my all time favorite songs.
Such a great songwriter and a good guy. Thanks for the fantastic music, Gordon!
what a great guy. talented and humble.
A true gentleman and a marvellous singer/songwriter.
These interviewers keep interrupting the man! Let the legend talk! we should be so lucky to hear him speak anything he wants for as long as he wants!
Respects the military veterans... I appreciate that about Gordon... A lot of entertainers disrespect and don't give honor to our Veterans... Sad to say but it's true... I appreciate the ones that do...
Same with Elvis our king!
Thank you for your beautiful music Mr. Lightfoot. You will be very missed. God bless you Sir.💞🌅
A Storyteller And Still Going Strong :), GO GORDON
I wish these amateurs would let Gordon speak without being interrupted every second. !!!
trevor welch I know right

Perhaps they were instructed to create an energetic and optimistic atmosphere.

Dreadful high speed jabbering. Poor Gord.

Gordon sir you are a legend!
What a wonderful humble man.
Very shy and nice. I can attest.
I fell in love with Gordon just based on. The lyrics of his songs. He does not look well I pray he is ok and stays with us! God bless you!
That was rude. We all age, jeez!

May fair winds & following seas be at your back. Missed & loved . Thank you as every day goes by we wont close our eyes
A major part of my musical/poetic life. Thank you GL.
he is a canadian cultural icon indeed Ama french Quebecer but a Canadian too Gordon Lightfoot never been influenced by american He always been a true canadian and made me proud to be canadian
He actually wrote a song where he sang in French -- "Nous Vivions Ensemble."
I am always stunned by the wizened little old man you would never recognize at the 7-Eleven he became in his last days. Great contributions to music.
Brilliant human being!
Wonderful to see Gordon Lightfoot!
Saw him at Liverpool empire ,such an honour to see him live .
Lucky you!
Canada lost a piece of itself !
RIP Gordon Lightfoot

Condolence to his family and fans. Gordon's Lightfoot Canadian legacy will not be forgotten but his presence we will miss at concerts.
Total Icon! He and Bill Bissett.
The video at the start is from Chicago Soundstage
Gord is the best
What an amazing man.
Great interview. R.I.P - Gordon Lightfoot

Gord was great!! Never got to see him 😢
Why put a guest on the spot & ask him to sing? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
I know he quit drinking and so did I, but I would have a beer with him.
Wish they would stop interupting him and let him talk.
National treasure of Canada
a superstar
Top man!
My hero
Masterpiece - the ghosts from the ship must of helped write that song.
Great song writer and musician
And Absolutely a Really GREAT PERSON! ❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔
One of my casual interests as I've gord's gold vol 1 and 2 but that is all.
That woman is beautiful.
Legend
Buddy doing the interview was trying to make it more about him .. with Gordon you could just sit back and let him talk the time away
In '66 Gord played "pride of man" a tune that predicted 911.(THAT WHICH HAS BEEN SHALL BE AGAIN)
i believe it was picked up by a giant wave and the bow was slammed into the bottom of the lake!!! broken in two!
CAN THESE HACKS LET HIM FINISH JUST ONE DAMN SENTENCE?!
Show some respect for crying out loud... smh.
Great but dont like 'breakfast tv'....
willie nelson id still performing !!cant sing never could really but gordons voice and guitar abd songs well hes the greatest ever and they all know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Always heard Gordo was a bit of a curmudgeon bit he seemed nice here. Host is cringe worthy
He certainly became more good humored & relaxed in his later days.
9:10 Nazi Hall?? Where is THAT place.
Selinor578 Massey Hall, in Toronto, or did I miss him say something later?
He looked ridiculous with long hair especially at that age.
Bet he couldn't wait to get away...
Interviewers are goofy.
Now Canada's version of Keith Richards. His "Sundown" story is pure nonsense BTW.
Yeah...I always thought "Sundown" was about his relationship with Kathy Smith. I don't think that "I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess" has much to do with the sun setting over some farmhouse somewhere. Jonas Nordin, Keith Richards is a Brit.
So Casparus knows more than the songwriter about what his song was written around... Phhhttt...
if gord would ease up on the gym and gain some weight have a drink his voice would come back better!!!!
I'm sorry but gordon reminds me of family guys herbert..
