    These are some real fishermen, and fisherwoman who know and respect the species they target. Knowledgeable about the actual fishing and the fishery and species, our sport could stand to have more anglers like them!

    Great example of a fisherman who cares about the fishery. I strictly catch and release sturgeon too. I find it hard to keep a fish that’s taken 10-15 yrs to get to 40”-60” to keep.

      We harvest all sustainable salt water species (salmon, halibut, cod) during the summer and early fall but once we return to the delta we fish sturgeon exclusively for sport. Though we do have many legal size and some oversize sturgeon per trip, It’s my hope in our lifetime like other sturgeon fisheries we will have a sturgeon population with many massive 100 plus inch monsters to tangle with.

      I’ve fished cnr for white sturgeon in the delta for over 20 years in an effort to leave the resource better than I found it for future generations of anglers. I literally say no to a lot of money weekly by only fishing cnr. It’s a personal choice and I do respect and support differences of opinion from all fisherman who follow the law.

    On the subject of the merits and demerits of barbless hooks, while the barb certainly makes the hook harder to remove, it does at least hold and not tear the fish's mouth. I do a bit of fly fishing where, if you like to release and you are dealing with rainbow stockies, they are fragile and you have to be quick on the release with minimal damage. Many of us use barbed hooks, but crimp them, meaning push down the barb with pliers. This creates a small but smooth bump, affording the angler the best of both methods. The hook holds, does not tear the mouth and also allows for an easy release.

      Garnett M Right. I hooked one that we estimated at 9 to 10 feet long near the ferry crossing by Rio Vista.
      It was along side our boat when it rolled and snapped off. Our net was too small and it was scary looking anyway. Great fun.

    My first try at sturgeon fishing resulted in me being number 3 at hooking up. The first two by my bro and a friend thought they got snagged and cut their lines. I said no to that. We were in a shipping channel up from the ferry crossing. I saw my tip Bob and took a seat and announced. "Hold on boys, we're going for a ride".
    I set the hook and it was fish on. We were not equipped for this fish. 30# test line on spinning reel. 30 minutes later I got it to the boat. With a big net ready my friend was ready to reach when it surfaced along side of the boat.
    F*#k that was all he said and it rolled and snapped off. We estimated it at 9 to 10 feet long. Really too big to net yet alone get in the boat. Best fish ever. I showed them two. I asked my bro if we could come back the next day. We did with a lasso and an anchor float. Never happened again. It was a dinosaur.
    I grew up in the bay area.

      I chose to go with Daiwa because they are really dominating the market right now with quality and price. The high end Salitgas are awesome but for under $200 you can't beat a Black Gold Saltist with up to 48" of line per handle turn. The Seagate is similar at $149. Also the Sealine at around $100 or the Sealine XH with a great sealed drag for $125. It's the drag and the spool that your paying for so be careful about when you are buying reels. Some companies have cut costs by cutting quality lately. www.daiwa.com/us/ I am a Daiwa dealer so let me know if you need help. For a rod, there are lots of cheap imports available that will catch fish but in the long run you will be much happier with a higher quality rod. Since I've been working with Cousins, I've been impressed with the durability and feel. www.daiwa.com/us/ I'd suggest you go with the best quality you can comfortably afford and get out there and catch some fish.

    • @AnglerWestTV
      @AnglerWestTV  6 років тому

      The audio is normalized to what YT recommends which is way above what is normal for TV. Anymore at it would be over modulated and distorted. On my computer at 50% volume it's almost too loud bear with my headphones. Not sure how to make it any louder for you. It's difficult when everyone is watching on different things from phones to TVs.

    Correct me if im wrong, i havent fished for awhile, but i thought u couldnt bring the sturgeon out of water when determining the legal size? Wouldnt that comply with catch and release also?

    • @vadim97v
      @vadim97v 6 років тому

      I believe you can take them out of the water if you think the sturgeon is not oversize. Oversize fish cannot be taken out of the water.

    • @mryang3644
      @mryang3644 6 років тому

      I dont know about that. Ive heard from plenty that fish needs to be in the water when measuring and not out.

    • @vadim97v
      @vadim97v 6 років тому

      Mr Yang No that’s wrong. Nobody measures a legal fish if it’s in the water. Only oversized. Don’t you see that everybody nets the sturgeon then measures inside the boat?

    • @mryang3644
      @mryang3644 6 років тому

      If u can look at a fish and tell its exact measurements to the inch, more power to ya.... yes i just reread the regulations, yes its only for oversize... but tell me this, can u tell a 59 inch from a 60 inch to a 61inch? I dont think so, not in the water. Pull an over size out of water, and findout out its just 1 inch over, and having to release it. Well u better hope there no Game warden scoping u out. Id rather be careful than risk gettting fined or snitch out by other fisherman.. but thats me.. 1 reason why fishing off the bank makes measuring any size easier, over or under when fishing for sturgeon.

    • @vadim97v
      @vadim97v 6 років тому

      @@mryang3644 Lol dude this is too funny. A game warden will not ticket you if you take out a 61 inch sturgeon out of the water haha. There is no possible way to tell a 59 in from a 61 in sturgeon so there is no way a game warden will ticket you lmao.

    Did you know that in California you can not take the sturgeon out of the water. That's called landing the fish. You are supposed to measure the fish in the water and release it in the water. You can get cited if you are seen by DFG. Go look it up check your regulations.

    • @gatecrasherfishingadventur2411
      @gatecrasherfishingadventur2411 5 років тому +4

      In California anglers who wish to keep a sturgeon may retain 3 per year that are between 40” to 60” from the tip of the snout to the fork of the tail. Our laws allow fish 68” or less to be removed from the water for an exact measurement. The law is reasonable and understands that an exact measurement in the water is literally impossible. Green sturgeon may not be removed from the water.
      Good fishing to you.
