So the true secret is having an amazing singing voice lol
Perfect!
Let me get this straight. You are inferring that Lidell has an amazing singing voice. (if that is not what u r inferring disregard my comment). First off, I had / have no idea who Lidell is but got pulled in to watching by the vid's title. Yeah, I'm up for a secret vocal harmony trick. Pressed start and the show began. Some geeky white guy doing a bad Stevie Wonder-ish imitation. Wait, what an idiot I am. It's a parody right?. My wife, who is a singer, assured me this was not a parody. C'mon I said; the hilarious swaying back and forth as he sings (pitchy as hell) is a serious attempt at soulful RnB vocals? I suppose the world has gone mad. Trump has "the best words" and Lidell has an "amazing singing voice". My wife then loses her shit and starts laughing maniacally, "of course it's a parody" she says. "You can be so gullible sometimes".
@Melvin MelvinHe says that he looks retarded when he sang high notes.
@Melvin Melvin Thanks for your comment Mel. When I say "pitchy" I'm saying that Lidell (when singing) has a problem with pitch or as some people would say, "singing in tune". I know in this instance he's doing or trying to do a Stevie Wonder type RnB vocal track which includes a lot of slurs, vibrato and interval jumps which are usual in this type of music. He's not singing long notes void of vibrato. Basically, he's not singing straight forward simple lines. These soulful RnB vocals which are done so well by Stevie Wonder and others are difficult to do well. Lidell fails miserably in his attempt. When I asked "is this a parody" I was implying (or inferring, not sure) that this must a joke vid. He's so bad at what he's trying to do it seems like he's "putting us on". A parody of this type of singing style which as I said earlier is very difficult to do well. A bit of context in the validity of my opinion; I've been a pro Musician since the early 70's, have played on several albums that have been released in at least a dozen countries, have played live in some iconic venues including the Hammersmith Odeon ( which is called something else these days) in London U.K, more than once at Massey Hall in Toronto, all the huge Hockey arenas across Canada, all throughout the U.S., the U.K., and one gig in Holland (lol) etc. So yes, I have a lot of experience in the studio and live. I played the vid for my wife who is a very talented vocalist. Her reply was, "huh, I definitely did not get anything out of that." Over the years I've learned a lot from her regarding vocalists who can really sing. She has pointed out subtleties that I previously didn't notice. She's a big fan of soulful RnB vocalists like Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight etc. On the other side of the coin, she can also appreciate vocalists like Sting who mostly sings without vibrato. Sorry for the long reply. I'm discovering I have problems trying to make a point while keeping it short. I could have just said "as a vocalist, Lidell really sucks. There are plenty of white dudes that can cop this vocal style, Lidell is not one of them". And what's with the creepy swaying? "Man, he's really feeling it, he's in the groove". Ok, now I'm done.

You are in for such a treat! I've been a huge JL fan since like 2005. He's a delight.
I was not expecting those soulful vocals to come out of you. I’m thoroughly impressed!!
Thought the same thing. Totally unexpected. Great voice!
Went to school with him. Everyone knew he was going to be a big shot. He looked like a Michael Hutchence when he was 18. Wore leather jackets to conservative school and got away with it! Every girl wanted him. And a few guys too. He wasn't an ego maniac but seemed really aloof. My sister was in one of his many school bands. Funny to see him so ordinary now.
First off your vocals are amazing! Second this trick is awesome too!! 🎧🙏🏾 🎤
Dude, I thought he was only the producer. Then he started singing and I was like "wait, what?"
Great voice (with and without the mods)
Thank The Beatles lol.

Seems really similar to Stevie Wonder's approach when using varispeed tape. Not surprising considering he sounds so much like Stevie in the first place. Amazing technique and execution regardless, Jamie Lidell is on another level and deserves all the recognition and respect he gets.
Please tell me more! Massive stevie fan here, didn't know he used half speed tape to record

One of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen was watching him perform live at Coachella, building a song from scratch with just his voice: vocals, percussion, leads and bass. It was absolutely fantastic. He is a gift to music; highly underrated.
guy has releases out on warp records, i mean, he could be WAY bigger than he is, i'm sure, but he's pretty known and rated. and his work with cristian vogel as super_collider was reallly hot.

@Hawk Holloway let me be very clear about two things: I don't live in my parents basement, and I absolutely love Jamie and his work. Everyone successful "cheats" in the music industry.
Step one: have an amazing voice.
Brill! Luv your vibe, bro. A little tricky I learned in the 70's, from Mr. Roger Troutman, was to "halo" the vocals, singing the same part on a second track. The subtle differences in the performance would make the vocals pop up like 3D.
Another trick I use currently is to copy the initial performance to a second track, then offset it by 50 Ms do one hears a "real" delay. Not digital mind you, but two sonic events chasing each other through time. Cheers!
Woow hook me up
This is software, go build a pedal you're drunk. 😂

This isn’t altar boy, it’s Jamie Lidell
@7:48 when the magic mushrooms take effect
That was badass. All of a sudden you got Eryka Badu & Stevie Wonder to guest star on your track.
It's actually a more natural sounding alternative to Autotune etc. when it comes to expand your vocal range.
disagree. Autotune's artefacts can be avoided.
It’s a completely different use than autotune lmao, its not an alternative it’s a new tool. I’d definitely still use autotune and melodyne with this trick if the track called for it
@@lorenzowoodmusic I do agree and i would probably enjoy Alterboy just for having a different algotythm too. Its that its just not "more natural". Oh wait unless OP meant natural like "ease of use". Then i guess it might be more natural shure.
".... expanding your vocal range...." = Cheating. Accuracy matters.

@@patrickcudd9312 And that's why we call it "Blue-eyed Soul."
That was dope. I never thought about approaching it like that. Dope concept.
I used this trick in the 90s with a fostex 4 track. Opened a lot of options for harmony with other instruments, as well. Nice voice! Subbed!
Jamie’s liddel vocal secret
The part starting at 6:18!! Those adlibs and harmonies are amazing.
I thought alter boy was going to a be a guest rapper slinging a verse...nope, software.
Jamie is a genius
This is what the Beach Boys did from time to time with tape. Saw a video of Brian Wilson and Brian Epstein talking about their production processes, pretty amazing stuff
I prejudged, shame on me. Soulful bro bro
okay Stevie. haha! nice work!
How to pitch shift yourself into Michael Jackson. I love it!
Awesome trick and superb artist, gotta check him out
Jamie Lidell is my hippest new found influence! so adept at the tech that makes the modern recording platform, with the musicality of the great Soul/Funk/R&B artists I learned from. Hat's off to Jamie. ageless music!
That man can sing!
We already have Stevia Wonder and I’m sure a zillion other copies of his sound out there. Why would you want to so completely lift his stick?
Jamie’s just so incredible. Effortless creative flow.
Is there no setting in ProTools to just disable auto-formant shifting when time stretching /compressiong? In Digital Performer, I would not need to perform the formant correct with Little Altar Boy at all as one can set soundbites to either shift pitch or formants at same time or not, so as to exclude drum and vocal sounds as desired. I'd be shocked if ProTools can't do a feature that we've had for like 2 decades at this point.
Formant shift isn't happening as feature when the pitch change is made. It's a fact of life that raising the pitch turns you into a chipmunk, and lowering pitch turns you into a troll. The formant knob allows you to fix it to your taste
I guess since we took over sports they're trying to take over music GD, Marc Broussard, Teddy Swims, Allen Stone, Jamie Lidell and whoever else, great music, bring real soul back, whoever it may be
@daddyrichten 😂
😂 nobody can deny the soul
I went to listen to the track right after seeing this video. A little disappointed not to hear these added vocals, which would be weird to find there as this was obviously done after the album was "printed".
Still a great track, though.
I love how the content on youtube keeps getting better
You sound like Stevie Wonder. I'm so jealous.
He's gone full Chevy chase.
So.... in theory.... I could nail any metal song but my guitar would sound like a girl?
this is a fire technique ! dope!
JAMIE ... Which button or "Quick key" did you use to go back to the original speed ??
The secret is he can sing well and uses a formant pitching vst?
This is bs...
Mind blown on so many levels. Clearly I have been missing out on Jamie Lidell. Truly excellent & inspiring stuff.
I thought this was avgn at first lmfao dude looks just like him
AAAAAASSSSSSSS
Not even close wtf yall smoking
I had the pleasure of meeting Jamie and his wife few years back. He was so humble and generous. He played to a half-full venue and it was a complete shame. What an incredible show!
Is there a Logic Pro equivalent to varispeed? Like, if I just time stretched the track to record the overdub to and then put the session back in tempo and time stretched the new track to match... same deal?
yes, it's called Flex Time.
@@ConfusionInc wrong. u can can enable varisspeed in the line/bar where you can adjust the tempo, key and so on of the song. right click, then open the options where you can decide which functions are enabled- there you have to enable varisspeed. if it is activated there should appear an orange plus icon in the bar. activate it and you can play with the speed and pitch of the whole session
It’s called varispeed.
@@joejoeyjoel Haha I was going to say. And it's way better than Pro Tools algorithm
Been using this sort of technique for a few years except to make my voice sound like a sample mainly cuz a) it sounds cool and b) because I don't like my regular singing voice. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. Here's an example of one I did like 5 years ago: soundcloud.com/nicostadi/break
I feel a bit dense, but what was the point of slowing and speeding the track if he was just adjusting formant anyways? Why not just sing at normal speed and adjust the formant?
This video is a perfect tutorial of exactly what I'm trying to do BUT you don't actually SHOW how to do any of it. You always cut away whenever you actually mess with the settings in Pro Tools.
This guy's talent is just limitless
I'd buy any plugin from him
his voice is amazing, anyone know if I can do this trick in cubase?
why not . i wanna say every DAW has timestretch and pitchshift these days.
won´t get you his panty dropping voice tho ...
Hi Ben. Yes, you can do this is Cubase. When you've made a recording, open the track up in the audio editor, and select Elastique Pro > Tape as the Algorithm (or do this in the info line - both do the same thing). Then go to the Audio Pool (CTRL + P) and set the recording you've just made to 'musical' mode. Changing the tempo will now alter the pitch just as in the video, and then you can do the same SoundToys trick on the vocal.
thanks, I'm going to experiment with this, it reminded me of the beatles, it'll be useful for weird fx as well, might even make a video about it
Cubase actually has automatic harmony create features.
Why have I paid female singers to lay backing tracks?
Never again!!!
Great information. 👍👍
You could sample this into a kanye type beat. Dope song and voice.
@Hawk Holloway you are so uninformed it's painful
exactly! my head immediately went to drive slow
@Hawk Holloway you must be living in a different world.
Dude. Love your songs from the electronic days to the great soul stuff. Cheers.
It is crazy to me how someone can come up with something like this. Such a creative trick!
Nothing new, the Beatles were doing exactly this 45 years ago via vari-speed tape.
When you’re a vocal phenom like Allen Stone’s favorite singer. 🙌🏼
I guess I am missing something. Why would you slow it down, record, then speed it back up and affect it to sound like it was never slowed down? Why wouldn't you just do the harmony at full speed and be done with it?
It allows him to be more methodical with his vocal accents. He adds in extra details, runs, etc. because he has more time to do so. Then he speeds it back up and uses Little AlterBoy to match the pitch and formant.
@@soundtoys Thanks. I see now. That's cool!
@@milescoolin He also is increasing his vocal range, and he doesn't have to make it sound like him, he can make it sound like other voices as he showed. Definitely very cool! I only ever used these plugins for funny formant shifts on synths. Cool to see more functional uses
I mean if you watched the video he says the reason why
well he had to found a method to show how that formant function of the VST works haha so that's the whole secret ;) congrats to him the outcome was creative anyway.
