Jamie Lidell Plays All His Synths At Once: In The Studio With Jamie Lidell | Reverb

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- On Jamie Lidell's Hanging Out With Audiophiles podcast, he broaches the topic of turning a monosynth into a polysynth, inspired by the monosynths he has in his own studio like the Korg MS-20 and MS-50, the Oberheim SEM, and a Doepfer modular setup. Watch along as he shares the studio secrets he has devised to create this Frankensteinian monster synth.

I love how he’s got all this gear but then plays it through a little mini Akai controller 🤘🏻
Lol also noticed it, that's small one used to be mine :)
such a stressful keyboard to watch him play!
Then i played it through my phone speakers.
Big controller = less space for synth!

Imagine mapping a single modwheel to different parameters on each synth
He's so down to earth, I love that.
"It's worth a go!"
I'll definitely give it a go, just as soon as I acquire tens of thousand of dollars worth of synthesizers, computers, and MIDI routing equipment!
man I love this Guy and the cirklon freack. such a Legend... May God bless him and his Family! Much love and support from munich/germany to my man Jamie and Reverb!!!
The same approach used in the Original Oberheim 8 voice with programmer. Several independent voice modules under a single control. The SQ-1 can also be used in a similar fashion for two sequential MIDI channels via the USB input.
“Ah flutes”
the coolest guy. massive fan.
F-ing love it Jamie. Thanks for sharing your music. Thanks for sharing your setup. Thanks for sharing your brilliance. Also.. you have the voice of an angel.... just saying.
More Jamie vids please!
Which is better, a "synphony" or a "synthony"?
synthphony of course
5:00 whooaaaaa!!!!
My favorite nerd who also happens to sing like no other.
That sounds fucking sick.
Whats the M4L Patch that enables this functionality?
Awesome!
"Ahhhh Flutes!"
Did anybody notice he's using B&W speakers rather than studio monitors? And that he's sitting an a Eames rather than on desk chair? And that there is a lot of wisdom above the studio? Would this be the definition of "style"?
Noticed The B&W speakers, but they aint no domestic bookshelfs.
Those 501 Matrix design speakers have one of the most advanced and frankly beautiful inner structures ever made. Paired with a stellar amp, which mostly Jamie's are. Those speakers will out preform almost any standard-highmidrange studio monitors. Even modern powered monitors. Also forgot to mention the revolutionary super tweeters they developed for those models. The tweeter design matched with the early carbon fiber woofers are known for producing an incredibly clean and precise in phase stereo image.
Hence why one of my favourite world renowned Engineers and producers, Steve Albini still uses the very same speakers in his huge world class studio (Electrical Audio). You most likely have noticed that Abbey Road still use specifically B&W unpowered speakers aswell. Just newer ones.
Sorry for the rant. I Just bloody love those speakers.
As Chuck mentioned. These are still often userd, also bigger versions of them in mastering and high end soubd demos. Also the newer 801s are used. They are however, very big. The Matrix series sound amazing.
Vik, You need to get out more...!!
I wonder if you could use a Faderfox pc12 to control 6 paremeters of each synth instead of "reaching out" to the synths. I would buy the damn thing to try and maybe fail
Legend
Can you please release the song “Runaway” on Apple Music ?
Bass Station II in the corner
Very cool!
Brilliant.... ahhh flutes
I see a Tempest! But wow, strangely interesting sound! *you* said Silly, not me, lol - hmmm, is it art? Really Love it.
Would, in the absence of a Kenton box like yours, Robby Kilgore's Midi software do a similar splitting/joining thing?
(ah flutes!) :)
you just recreated a new diy exploded T.O.N.T.O.!
quite fun really
what about building an effects unit using a Tayloe Mixer with a clock of 38KHZ that should give some nice sounds, I still think that the CMI FAIRLIGHT V is the ducks guts.
im crying
Looks like if instead of Batman, Christian Bale turns into a synth superhero
dude now I can't unsee it. The likeness of speaking pattern and how the face moves is uncanny ^^
Can someone distinguish the module names in his mini Doepfer box please?
He ran out of money so he borrowed a chair from the local library!!!
Is this the same Jamie Lidell who done a few Techno tracks back in the day??
indeed
for what does he use this Brüel & Kjaer device?
Check out 'look mum no computer'. He's got a bunch of them, moded to be used as automated filters in his giant diy modular synth. ua-cam.com/video/bFt0bxdGXyg/v-deo.html
Yeah, a bit like a Multi on the Virus. Except you can do up to 16 voices.
There's more money in the single shot at 5:13 than in my whole studio
Yeah I guess just a "studio B"
"Ah... Flutes!"
Just imagine waking up in this studio setup !
l'd think l had died and gone to heaven.
Studio A is even crazier.
So basically the organ in full stops
playing everything on that lil ass keyboard
Okay so many questions... the voyager has lowest note priority and is taking MIDI, okay got it, simple enough. How do you control which of the other notes are being played by which synth? Simply as a matter of high Q bandpass filters? Do the Korg MS's even have bandpass filters?
The Kenton interface has programmable note priority. It handles note assignment on each CV/ Gate pair dependent on the algorithm selected.Disclaimer- I didn't work on the video. I am familiar with the Kenton.
oooooh, alright I got it. Thank you!
so this is how they made the stranger things soundtrack
killer
Sounds a little bit like Bowies Warzsara
the end result is neither para- or poly- but cacophonic.
That is one beautiful unusable sound !
Synthony :D
I can create that sound on NI massive in 2 secs...haven't used it on anything yet,....it's a bit crap...I also' used my bluetooth to connect into next doors home entertainment system at the same time....Interesting
There's also the Polyend Poly; seems about 2x comprehensive as any of the Kenton solutions. Also, why do you have $10000s in synths and outboard gear and you're playing them all simultaneously on this throwaway bit-sized midi controller..um? Try a Waldorf Kb37 my man.
Dude has the pinkest mouth I've ever seen.
That is one of the weirder comments I've read in a minute.
Non Ofyourbusiness
But, am I wrong? Haha
.. and they sound terrible...
2 theremins? Seriously?!
Christian Bale is that you?
Yaass (first)
Surprisingly, the result sounds rather meh. But reason for that could also be at least one synth is heavily out of tune. That being said, i'm thankful for any video where Jamie Lidell shares some of his secrets (or just sings), so this is appreciated nevertheless.
it's not really polyphony
It's symphonic in terms of unifying sound sources of different timbres...
yeah but it's not polyphony, any MIDI controller can do this. The title is misleading
edit: they changed the title. It was "How To Turn a Monosynth into a Polysynth" before.
Not misleading at all, he did play them all at once.
polyphony = multiple voices on a single synth. Not multiple synths playing totally different sounds linked together by MIDI. That's symphonic as the guy above said.
Yes, we're all aware of that, but you said the title was misleading, which it clearly isn't lol. But way to focus on the most important part of this video and not the boring sound or technique to create it.
