  • On Jamie Lidell's Hanging Out With Audiophiles podcast, he broaches the topic of turning a monosynth into a polysynth, inspired by the monosynths he has in his own studio like the Korg MS-20 and MS-50, the Oberheim SEM, and a Doepfer modular setup. Watch along as he shares the studio secrets he has devised to create this Frankensteinian monster synth.

    The same approach used in the Original Oberheim 8 voice with programmer. Several independent voice modules under a single control. The SQ-1 can also be used in a similar fashion for two sequential MIDI channels via the USB input.

    Did anybody notice he's using B&W speakers rather than studio monitors? And that he's sitting an a Eames rather than on desk chair? And that there is a lot of wisdom above the studio? Would this be the definition of "style"?

    • @chunkhutchinson
      @chunkhutchinson 5 років тому +1

      Noticed The B&W speakers, but they aint no domestic bookshelfs.
      Those 501 Matrix design speakers have one of the most advanced and frankly beautiful inner structures ever made. Paired with a stellar amp, which mostly Jamie's are. Those speakers will out preform almost any standard-highmidrange studio monitors. Even modern powered monitors. Also forgot to mention the revolutionary super tweeters they developed for those models. The tweeter design matched with the early carbon fiber woofers are known for producing an incredibly clean and precise in phase stereo image.
      Hence why one of my favourite world renowned Engineers and producers, Steve Albini still uses the very same speakers in his huge world class studio (Electrical Audio). You most likely have noticed that Abbey Road still use specifically B&W unpowered speakers aswell. Just newer ones.
      Sorry for the rant. I Just bloody love those speakers.

      As Chuck mentioned. These are still often userd, also bigger versions of them in mastering and high end soubd demos. Also the newer 801s are used. They are however, very big. The Matrix series sound amazing.

    I wonder if you could use a Faderfox pc12 to control 6 paremeters of each synth instead of "reaching out" to the synths. I would buy the damn thing to try and maybe fail

    Okay so many questions... the voyager has lowest note priority and is taking MIDI, okay got it, simple enough. How do you control which of the other notes are being played by which synth? Simply as a matter of high Q bandpass filters? Do the Korg MS's even have bandpass filters?

    • @georgeray3492
      @georgeray3492 6 років тому +1

      The Kenton interface has programmable note priority. It handles note assignment on each CV/ Gate pair dependent on the algorithm selected.Disclaimer- I didn't work on the video. I am familiar with the Kenton.

    There's also the Polyend Poly; seems about 2x comprehensive as any of the Kenton solutions. Also, why do you have $10000s in synths and outboard gear and you're playing them all simultaneously on this throwaway bit-sized midi controller..um? Try a Waldorf Kb37 my man.

    Surprisingly, the result sounds rather meh. But reason for that could also be at least one synth is heavily out of tune. That being said, i'm thankful for any video where Jamie Lidell shares some of his secrets (or just sings), so this is appreciated nevertheless.

  • @despicabledog

    it's not really polyphony

    • @thesearethesuns
      @thesearethesuns 6 років тому

      It's symphonic in terms of unifying sound sources of different timbres...

    • @despicabledog
      @despicabledog 6 років тому +6

      yeah but it's not polyphony, any MIDI controller can do this. The title is misleading
      edit: they changed the title. It was "How To Turn a Monosynth into a Polysynth" before.

    • @HAZARDOUS88
      @HAZARDOUS88 6 років тому +2

      Not misleading at all, he did play them all at once.

    • @despicabledog
      @despicabledog 6 років тому +8

      polyphony = multiple voices on a single synth. Not multiple synths playing totally different sounds linked together by MIDI. That's symphonic as the guy above said.

    • @HAZARDOUS88
      @HAZARDOUS88 6 років тому

      Yes, we're all aware of that, but you said the title was misleading, which it clearly isn't lol. But way to focus on the most important part of this video and not the boring sound or technique to create it.
