    You brought back memories of my childhood- the roar of the Primus, followed by the blissful silence when it was turned off 😀
    Thank you!

      Same here! Once my Grandad showed me how to do this, it was my job to boil a huge kettle in the shed for our morning brew. I love the smell of meths so much, I keep a small bottle in my shed, just to sniff and remember the happiest days of my life.

    Brings back memories of using these in Scouts 38+ years ago.
    Getting the big urn on first thing in the morning, on bigger international camps where no fires were allowed.
    Over-enthusiastic and premature pumping scorching the ceiling of the scout hut when practicing lighting them them on a Friday night.

    You can control the heat too with letting the pressure out, there fantastic, boils water in no time, works better with altitude, the Everest expedition used the travelling one, well proved itself 👍 ❤ love em, cooking on a blow lamp, nice blue flame 😊

    I have unearthed my grandfather's Primus No.1 which he used inWW1 in Egypt, Palestine and France.
    I think u need to replace some washers and the pump leather before attempting to light it. Your video is excellent and I am really looking forward to the first cook up.
    All the best,

    Only video on youtube explaining working principle of kerosene stove

  • @mgabrielle2343
    @mgabrielle2343 2 роки тому +4

    My mother had one back in the 1960s, we never used alcohol to preheat the vaporising tubes or manifold, we pumped it until some raw kerosene squirted out of the jet, and pooled in the tray below, when we have enough kerosene pooled in the tray, we let the pressure out so as not to overflow the tray, we then light it with a match and let it preheat tubes, after about a minute or so, we pressurise it and the stove starts roaring giving out nice mostly blue flames with little yellow unburnt fuel vapours.
    Word of warning they can generate carbon monoxide so always use them in ventilated space. If you do not have methylated spirit, you do not really need it as kerosene would also do the job but it makes more soot and carbon deposits.

    I miss this stove.. in Egypt where I'm from almost every home got one no matter how rich or poor they're.. even though we got modern stoves we still use it for heating the rooms in winter.. and sometimes we cook on it instead of going to the kitchen 😅 ... Well the last 15 or 20 years no one is doing it no longer.. I still sleep on his sound everyday but it's recorded on my phone ❤

I bought a Parascene Pack away stove from ebay £20, in a nice red tin(no rust) it holds pressure, roarer, came with little meths tin, spanner and proper windshield, No pricker but no worries because you can still buy them. I couldn't resist it at that price, I'm guessing its about 1960 ish. Now I have your instructions I'm confident I can use it to make a brew.

    What is the reason for leaving the air screw open whilst priming, also where did you get your little squirty bottles from please

    • @flat-earther
      @flat-earther 4 роки тому

      If the air screw is closed while priming the tank will increase in pressure while the burner is not hot enough yet to vaporize the fuel so liquid fuel will come out of the jet and burn with smoke and soot.

    I love your enthusiasm , i have 3 of these, 2 are "COMPANION " brand, and are complete, one needs a pump washer, and has department of defence stamp on the underside of the tank, the third one is a BAT brand made in the GDR, it has no legs, you can see where they had been solder on. • @eltecnico3675
    @eltecnico3675 4 роки тому +1

    He visto que algunas de estas estufas se le coloca una mecha en la parte interna, yo supuse que es para que el combustible suba hasta tubo precalentado por el efecto de capilaridad y al encontrar el tubo caliente se vaporiza y por aumento de la presión busca la salida natural que es a través de la boquilla. Pero en este caso no usa mecha supongo que aprovecha el precalentamiento de los vapores normales de la bencina.
    I have seen that some of these stoves have a wick placed on the inside, I assumed that it is so that the fuel rises up to the preheated tube due to the capillary effect and when it finds the hot tube it vaporizes and by increasing the pressure it looks for the natural outlet that is through the mouthpiece. But in this case it does not use a wick, I suppose it takes advantage of the preheating of the normal benzine vapors.

    Sir, I have a chinese made stove similar to the one you have. After lighting it for about 5 minutes, the kerosene starts to leak out of the joint where the spirit cup is and also starts to burn as it is hot. Do have any idea of what could be casing it..?

    • @davidcooper6704
      @davidcooper6704 6 років тому +1

      If it is the smaller of the two stoves (Optimus 96) then it may need a new lead washer which is visible when you remove the vapourising tube. If it is the larger type of stove then you may need to replace the two burner washers (one either side of the spirit cup). These washers will need to be heatproof.

      Never use petrol or gasoline it will end very badly indeed. Use lamp oil (parrafin or Kerosene) you can get better grades of parraffin that smells better and smokes less but it will work on cheap heating oil.

    Primus means ‘first’ in latin. They took the name because they invented the system where you preheat the heater and the fuel is ignited as a gas rather than a liquid. This massively increased efficiency and economy and also meant a much cleaner burn with less soot.
    Before Primus stoves burnt kerosene in liquid form.

    Great stove and great video! I'm sure you already know but a little bit of fibreglass rope in the spirit cup will allow you to burn kerosene to prime the stove rather than having to carry a separate fuel.
